Had a wonderful time learning how to throw pottery however the reason the stars are low was because of the way this is set up. They weren't organized with their final pieces and take weeks to respond to an email. It took about three emails and 5 callbacks, which sounds ridiculous I know but it was a frustrating communication problem that could have been fixed. My friend did the duty to go over there to pick it up (which took her an hour to and from) and then it took her about 30 minutes to find out pieces. Yup, a man just told her that the finish pieces were at this specific area and she had to look through every single one to find it. Which again, is not a great way to organize things. We unfortunately are not coming back due to the un organization & lack of communication. Please try elsewhere. read more

We had an amazing experience taking the 1 hour wheel pottery class here. You know the kind of pottery class like in the movie Ghost with Swazye and Moore. We both had never taken a pottery class before and our instructor Monique, guided us well. I would recommend it for beginners looking to try pottery! They don't tell you what to make. We were able to make something useful from the ball of clay that was given. They show you the basics and we were each able to make a bowl and decorate it. You must email them in 2 weeks to see if your piece is dried in the kiln. Then, for additional charge you can paint it or glaze it. Be sure to make it on time. We were late the first time. One of us was coming from Queens and the other from the Bronx, and to get here it is the last stop on the 5 train. We didn't make it since there was a lot of problems on the trains on the weekend. There is a 50$ reschedule fee per person. We will go again to paint our pieces. read more

Most of us have watched the 1990 movie Ghost starring a star-studded cast including Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore. It only took one scene to pique my interest in making pottery. Groupon for the win! I arrived 10 minutes before the class started and had an opportunity to roam around the store, browsing through shelves of products I could use to explore my creativity while admiring the work of other students. After a check-in/headcount, we were escorted to the back of the store by Monique and chose a station. Monique was a great instructor. She gave us an overview of the machinery and tools that we would be using to create our masterpieces. Tip: I am a plus-size woman so the average plastic apron did not work. I highly recommend bringing your own. We were also given plastic bags to tie over our shoes as a precaution. In the future, I think it would be helpful for enrolled students to get a few tips on preparing for the class. Wear clothes and shoes you would not mind covered with a little clay that is washable. I definitely thought making pottery was more involved but it was a very simplified process (thankfully). We were in a small room with five stations, which is ideal for 1:1, especially when we were amateurs learning how to (1) keep our clay wet (2) maintain a moderate speed for the wheel and (3) decide what we wanted to create (ex. mug/plate/ashtray). I loved that we could look at a few student pieces as references. It was so therapeutic to be in the moment and create without distractions. Monique was friendly, patient, personable, and very encouraging. Great temperament for an instructor! She kept an eye on us while jumping in when I needed help to get back on track. I appreciated her suggestions when I was clueless about what I was actually creating and additional tools to help keep its shape. Thank you! When you are ready to wash the excess clay off your hands, remember that the water is cold. Monique did give us a heads-up. After a few announcements on the next steps (i.e. the timeline for the kiln to harden the clay in about 2 weeks, choosing a clear glaze to make it food and microwave safe for free or to paint for an extra $20, and picking up), the hour-long class was already over. Zelda's is the only art supply store near Brooklyn College and fantastic if you need something in a pinch. The employees are super helpful, the atmosphere is relaxed and they offer classes for ceramics and painting on the side. They have a wide selection of brushes and paints. It is a small store, so don't expect the type of choices that you might see at Blick or Utrecht (or whatever conglomerate those two merged into). I think the best part about Zelda's is the sale items and imported items that you won't see at other stores. I picked up a set of Russian pan watercolors that I'd never seen before and some loose tube watercolors that were $0.99 each. Also, they had soft-grip paintbrushes that were high quality for $1.99. The prices are slightly higher on some items than you'd find in a major retailer, but that is to be expected with any small business. I don't mind paying a little more when I know I am supporting the only art store in our area. read more

Every time I visit I leave feeling like I've just visited with family. I believe the man that helped me (Jeff) is the owner, he was knowledgeable about all of the products, honest about quality and pricing and even told me I could email them a photo of my work if I needed help or advice. The service here is rude. The owner tried to sell me a $5 bottle of student grade paint for $20 and was extremely unapologetic about it. The tone of his voice was awfully disrespectful and I couldn't help but feel like I was being discriminated against. This is the only art store in the area and I was excited to come and support my local business but after today's interaction I will never return here again. I will also make sure to warn all my fellow artists to avoid this place at all cost. I assume I spoke to the owner and my word of advice is to treat your customers with more love and care. Since my fiance wrote a review I figure I should too since I was the one who enjoy it the MOST! We did a wheel throwing class which I never done before. I had only done free hand pottery class back in HS. It was a small class (3 ppl) and the instructor, Steven was very attentive, patient, friendly and helpful. We even ran over the 2 hr period so we can finish our last piece of work. I made 2 items while my fiance made 3 items. It was A LOT of fun! Make sure you don't have long nails for this class otherwise you going to get clay under your nail. After you finish they going to fire it up in the coming week or so and you can go back to paint/glaze it. I just finish glazing it the other day. In a week, I would be able to pick up the finish work when it's all fired up and pretty! read more

I was so happy when we found Zelda's. We moved here from Chicago and had always trusted Artists Frame Service. They are well-known, top rated in the country and frame priceless masterpieces for the Art Institute among others. I will say that Jack at Zelda's is their equal...with a more personal touch. Maybe because it's a smaller shop and he does all the framing, he remembers us, our taste in framing and how the new pieces will fit in with our existing ones. I came in three times over the course of a year intending to buy and all three times I was ignored, as soon as a Jewish client walks in they are greeted and asked if they need help. Racial biases aside, thestore looks like it's on its last leg product wise. Packages taped together , over priced tools & Dust covered shelves. I did a pottery class at night on a random Wednesday night. The only downside is that you need to RSVP at least 2 weeks in advance due to company policy. It was a small studio in the back and the guy Steven was really friendly and let me use as much clay to form some bowls. Do not wear your best clothing as they were be specked with gray clay. I loved the items I ended up making which were 2 bowls with lovely colors. When it comes to finalizing the product, they charge by size of the item. There is no sitting fee to paint your item, but they charge for firing the item. It is certainly a process: form the item, wait for it to dry, then paint, then glaze the item. Our experience at Zeldas was wonderful! Immediately when you walk in, you can tell that this is a place where you can be yourself and be creative. The walls are covered in paint and there are works of art displayed and drying in certain corners. My partner and I were part of the 1 hour pottery and wheel clay class. Bonnie, our instructor, was amazing and such a fun creative! She made us feel super comfortable and she was extremely attentive. Her energy was contagious and she gave us our opportunity for a Ghost movie moment picture. Our class size was very small, which allowed for more one on one instruction. I have been going here for years, I don't know why until yesterday I thought to write a review for them. Its kind of strange how my brain works. I literally have been going here for more then a decade, I remember taking acrylic, oil, and sketch classes here frequently, as in like 3 times a week as an adolescent. Seems like ages ago, but it wasn't I'm still young, I hope... :/ They have a limited selection of stuff, and what they do have is equal to prices of really gorgeous art supply stores in Manhattan. So if I'm in the city I like to brouse through a store like Lee's, and I come to Zelda's for art emergencies, or just when I'm being a lazy bum. I may start to send my son for some art lessons, I think it's always good for children to experience different extra curricular. It's enriching, and you never know if I have the next Picasso on my hands! Their staff is nice, they're all young artists that just need to be surrounded by brushes and canvases all day long, gotcha, don't worry I understand. They really try to help as best as they can, but they frequently find the need to ask someone "above" them for advice with how to help their customers, which is fine, I don't really mind, unless I'm in a rush. Their newly renovated framing studio is really nice, and they have done a great job framing some pieces of mine, I'm very satisfied. read more

I was having a marker crisis. Yes, there is such a thing. I needed them for a canvas sign-in board and could not figure out what kind to use . . . And I of course realized this at the last minute I needed help and fast. I had tried to research everything online but I really needed help from people who know their craft . . . And I found it locally at Zelda's. I called in a panic (remember this was a crisis). The young lady who answered took me seriously (although I am sure I sounded like a loon) and let me know there were several options. I headed over and brought the canvas with me . . . I had driven by this store hundreds of times but this was my first time going in . . . And I was brought back to my childhood when stores catered to a niche and the staff was pleasant but knowledgeable . . . versus now a days when you ask a question and you get a hand pointing you to an aisle. Before leaving I inquired about another idea I had for framing an invitation for the event I was assisting with . . . I did not feel like I was just another customer -- they were building a relationship. I was not looking to spend a lot of money but I left knowing when I need something framed professionally I would much rather come here and collaborate than go to a chain store where I am just another sale. I went to pay for my purchase but the young lady working the register was assisting another customer in the ceramics studio . . . I wandered towards the back where they hold classes and was approached by a gentleman who greeted me with the biggest smile . . . I made sure to let him know how impressed I was with both the store and the staff. When he asked me what brought me in I told him about my crisis and shared that the canvas was for a Bar Mitzvah I was assisting with. His mazel tov was so heartfelt that I felt like I was speaking to a family member and not the proprietor of a local store. Zelda's is a gem . . . And we are lucky to have it. I hope to go back soon as I dig into my more creative self. read more

As an artist and a bargain shopper, I'd say this place is pretty mediocre as far as art stores go. They would see a lot less business if a place like Pearl Paint opened up nearby, but until that happens it remains the only art store in the Brooklyn College area, which is a godsend for art majors needing last minute supplies. So despite their mediocrity, they get their business. POINTS OF NOTE: 1) Certain supplies are usually very low. Sure, they have an abundance of pencils and brushes and particular brands of paints, but I remember being an art major and getting an assignment that required certain canvasses or types of paper/supplies/etc, and despite the professor having called Zelda's well ahead of time to have the stuff in stock, they were almost always out of the specifics we needed, and we would have to settle for lower-grade quality (which really does make a difference to the serious artist). FOR PAINTERS: They do NOT sell large 1" canvas frames here! A lot of the BC painting professors call for canvases at least 1" thick, and Zelda's only sells the flimsy 1/2" ones. I know quite a few people who got stuck with flimsy frames from Zelda's, forgetting to make a timelier trip to Pearl Paint or The Art Store. Keep this in mind, so you don't put off your shopping to the last minute (even tough it seems more convenient to just grab a canvas on the way to class in the morning). 2) They do offer art classes, but nothing really geared toward adults looking for proper instruction (for that I'd recommend the Art Students League or an actual college class - though some of BC's painting and drawing classes leave much to be desired). 3) The staff isn't too helpful, past telling you where things are in the store. And even then, sometimes you end up following them as they walk in circles. Some of the older staff are pretty cool, but overall I wouldn't ask them for recommendations. 4) If you have a college ID card, you can get 10% off your purchase. Usually they don't bother to check the actual card (I've gotten away with just telling them I was a student), but keep it at hand in case they ask for it. read more

If I could, I'd give this place 1.5 stars. As a Brooklyn College art student, I'd say this place is ONLY ever good for really last minute purchases. I went today to buy a pad of bristol board. Not only were they out of stock of bristol vellum but they lacked any cheaper brands! I had to pay $29 for a 14" x 17" pad I could get for $13 at Blick! Bottom line, they sell everything for practically list price and the selection sucks. They probably know that for people like me who sometimes forget to bring supplies, we have no choice but to go there. My advise is to try to remember to bring what you need in order to avoid this place. Blick is out of the way for me but their everyday prices are far better than any discounts Zelda could ever offer! read more

The prices are alright, but Zelda's doesn't always have a great variety of items stocked. If you live in the neighborhood and you're looking for a quick fix, this is the place. I took a friend's daughter here for ceramic painting. It was expensive, but not more than any other ceramic painting place. We sat for hours painting and chatting, we never felt rushed even though several groups came and went while we were there. The staff was very friendly and knowledgable and I would certainly come back here again for a play date. I looked around at their other art supplies and their prices are a little high compared to what I'm used to, but they seem to have a pretty good selection of quality supplies so I don't mind supporting a locally owned business. There's even a little gallery next to the framing station where you can check out some unique artwork created by students and staff of Zelda's. read more

They are currently on my wall and people are always commenting how nice they are. Could not have asked for a better experience.
