I came by here the other day to browse a little bit. It's a store I hadn't been in before, so I thought I'd explore a bit. It seems they have a commercial side, which is perhaps a bigger part of their business? That said they do have a retail store upstairs, with some basics. If you're looking for canvases, paper & notebooks, spray paints, and some other essentials, they might have it. They weren't well stocked. I dug for some colored pen sets, and they only had two on offer, and each was the last one. I ended up getting some individual STABILO pens, which was fine for the moment. The staff are super friendly, and very knowledgeable. That was refreshing. Still if you're looking for a really wide selection, I'd steer toward artist & craftsmen or BLIK. read more

The SOHO Art Warehouse is a great resource for art materials in Bushwick, just off of Flushing Ave. While they do not have every items that exists, they have a solid, well stocked basic selection of high quality drawing materials, tape, oil paint, acrylics, primers and specialty tools. If you need something not stocked they are happy to order it delivered from the Manhattan location. The Bushwick location primarily fabricates high-end stretchers and has one of the best selections of primed and unprimed canvas and linen in NYC. I was a loyal customer of soho art materials over the past three years, buying thousands of dollars worth of Trimar stretchers and canvas rolls. I shopped there because I believed they supplied quality products and the staff was always kind and helpful. I recently made an order for around $600 worth of art supplies and noticed that I didn't get all the canvas I needed to make three paintings I had planned. The order was short by two yards ($25 worth out of the $620 order). Though this mistake created an inconvenience for me, it wasn't something that would prevent me from shopping there again. I called the store to inform them about the mistake and was told to come in person to correct the issue. When I entered I was asked to speak to the owner. This surprised me, as I didn't think such a small error that could be easily corrected would require a conversation with the owner. The first thing he said was "you got the right amount of canvas" - no apology, no listening to my side. When I pushed back on this he started blaming me for the problem, saying that I should have checked the canvas to make sure it was right before using it. After a little more back and forth I explained to him how much it had inconvenienced me to not get my full order and he finally agreed to provide me with the canvas I didn't get. While he was preparing the canvas for me he continued to question my trustworthiness and spoke angrily and emotionally, describing the situation as "a controversy" and said I was "complaining". I lost time in my day and felt attacked and on edge after the interaction. I will never shop there again nor will I recommend this store to my colleagues. This man lost thousands of dollars worth of business over $25. I don't usually write negative reviews of businesses, because I know how hard it is to run one and I don't want to hurt anyone's livelihood, but i have never been treated so badly by a business owner for not doing anything wrong and I feel a need to stand up for myself. I hope the owner of this business can get his emotions under control when things don't go as planned and stop looking for people to blame for problems that come up. read more

I enjoyed purchasing in this brooklyn location over the years. I enjoyed supporting them especially because the girl who works at the counter is friendly, efficient and very knowledgeable. But the owner and the other guy who works there are really, REALLY rude with her and I am truly getting tired to see her treated like shit in front of customers. Are they misogynists ? I don't know for sure but I saw them treating another female helper just as badly. So you know what? I am going to find another store and I wish those girls to find another employer that treats them with respect. Enough! read more

Selection isn't big, other than a few basics for painting and canvases. They've transferred most of their stock to their sister store in Manhattan. If you can, i would not buy from here.. I saw other reviews mentioning similar things about the owner and how horribly they treat their non- male employees and i even wondered if I'd have the same experience. It's unarguably true. Owner has a bad attitude and takes it out constantly on her, rarely ever says "thank you" after asking for something and responds by venting onto her, all the while has no problem doing so in front of customers. Me and other customers were visibly uncomfortable but it's clear to the staff it's normal treatment. read more

An artist is only as good as his tools. Soho, an independent art supply store located in its namesake Manhattan borough has opened a long needed store in the commercial district of Bushwick Brooklyn. The location is fittingly, in the heart of the growing graffiti district amongst work by Space Invader and Buff Monster. Their building is covered with giant murals. As you walk upstairs to the retail store there are two doors - to the left you'll find canvas, paper, panels, stretchers and framing. To the right you'll find all your paints, pens, brushes and supplies. The neighborhood needed a resource like this and anything that would have opened would obviously fulfill this need but Soho brings its own personality and flare. On my last visit I went in for some paint markers and a small ruler, basic yes but my options were endless. Although very familiar with what j was looking for, once amongst all the great options I became indecisive. Luckily Rebecca the clerk was overly helpful and very knowledgeable. When the one thing I was looking for wasn't there she offered to have what I needed sent to the store for my pickup tomorrow. She even offered to call when it arrived. Service is key and theirs is great! While choosing some small boards on the opposite side I watched one of the workers stretching a large 6 foot by 8 foot linen canvas. So not only do they offer all the canvas building tools necessary for your art, they also provide services such as this. You can order any custom piece, from odd oversized canvases to oval or triangular, anything you want. All done with care and precision. Another amazing selling point for Soho is they offer their own line of supplies. They have custom acrylic paints and mediums, such as, linseed oil, turpentine and varnish. And are offered in quantities from small to gallon sized jugs. If your an artist or just looking to explore Your hidden creativity, this is a perfect place to find tools and supplies, plus the walk through the the art covered streets is a great inspiration. read more

I thought I'd be hard to find but they have a sign on the door. The employees were so amazing and helpful. They clearly know what their doing and educated me a lot on the paints and brushes I went to buy. I would def come back they are worth it!!!!! read more

Just reviewing it because I'm shocked it doesn't have more.... This shop isn't huge but it has everything you need for painting and is the only one in the Bushwick/Ridgewood area. Very convenient location, really close to the subway and to my apartment. Just wish they sold Liquitex acrylics and were open later than 5pm (!) but I'll still give it 5 stars. read more

I have had several good experiences at Soho Art Supplies, buying large primed canvasses for painting. The staff is helpful. I think it may be a little difficult for customers to figure out how to enter. Take the elevator or stairs up to the 2nd level. read more
