Unbelievably, though American Cheese slices were used, none of the cheese was melted... it's as if they grilled one side of the bread and then assembled the sandwich with cold cheese, cold tomatoes and cooked bacon... frankly, the worst GC sandwich I've ever had but I ate most of it simply because I was very hungry and there aren't many dining options in Newberry. Corned beef hash was awful: pieces of corned beef lunch meat mixed with hash brown potatoes..lazy way of preparing this dish. Great, attentive service in this family owned local restaurant. Nothing fancy, but the food is good. They will prepare whitefish to your preference, and it was very good. Servers checked in twice; refilled ice tea, etc. It's a local place with many regulars. read more

We stopped here with another couple on our way camping for the weekend. The staff was super friendly and the bathrooms were clean. They also had a steady stream of customers. We weren't as lucky with our meal. Appetizers were the deep fried mushrooms and mozzarella sticks. Some of the deep fried mushrooms were still frozen in the middle and others were just cold. The mozzarella sticks had hair in them - they did remove those from the bill. The coleslaw that came out with my friend's fish dinner was past its prime. The guys had the burgers. They enjoyed them. I had the club sandwich, which was also good. So, all in all the food was a mixed bag of good and sketchy. With the amount of customers coming in, my hope is we just had off experience. read more

Food was not bad. Really need a manager on duty lots of stressed out workers acting like they are super busy, but pretty much a typical morning for most breakfast joints. Like I said generally the food is pretty good. Especially for a town with limited choices. Staff could use some training 35 minutes to get a ham and cheese omelette is not up to par, once dropped off took another 25 minutes once i was done to see the waitress again for the check. We are back again. This time for breakfast. I ordered a coffee to start with and it was great. I need a coffee in the morning and I'm not too fussy. My lumberjack skillet was tasty and my husband ordered a corned beef hash breakfast which was really good. While eating our food a little girl ordered the Beast. It's a cinnamon roll and it was huge. Stayed in Newberry for the night (which is a great spot between Tahquamenon Falls State Park and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore). We stopped into Zellar's for breakfast and were really glad we did! The waitstaff is attentive and super efficient. Everything was homemade and the portions were large. My husband had biscuits and gravy and said they were the best he's had in a restaurant. I had the homemade corned beef hash with eggs and it was also excellent. They have a giant cinnamon roll that also looked delicious that we will certainly come back for another time! If you are in the area, you should definitely eat here!! read more

We came on a Sunday morning for brunch. To be honest, I was a little hesitant, but my husband. really wanted to try it out. We had breakfast included at our hotel but the hotel breakfast was disappointing and sad on Saturday so the decision was made that we were going to be going to brunch on Sunday. My recommendation is if it's a busy sledding weekend go there kind of early or be prepared to wait it is worth it. We started out with the mini cinnamon roll. There is nothing mini about it and even cut, there was plenty for both of us. My husband had a skillet and I had an omelette. The coffee was good. The omelettes were great and his skillet was really good as well. The portions are huge and the price is good. Service is very friendly and quick. The only issue I had. ones that they only had one kind of sugar substitute available and it's a kind that I can't have but that's why I bring my own anyway, I really recommend you don't judge a book by its cover and give Zellars a try. read more

The rating is 4 for the restaurant and 3 for the motel. The restaurant doesn't have great decor but the food is really good! I tried their grilled whitefish sandwich which was the best tasting whitefish I remember having. Great seasoning and juicy with a soft bun and fries. I also had their Logger's skillet for breakfast with ham which was quite the portion! It was so good though that I finished it anyway. There doesn't seem to be many other places here with as good food so the service sometimes takes a little while because it get real busy. I can imagine it's difficult to prepare for sudden rushes of customers since this is quite small a city. The motel is OK. The bed isn't very comfortable but I slept decent at the very least. We stayed in the main building which has two stories and no elevator. My wife has bad knees so this was an unpleasant surprise and there were no rooms on the first floor we could change to. The room was quiet, I barely heard any other guests besides when they closed the doors to their rooms. The A/C was ok but it took a while for the compressor to turn back on again even though the room felt warm. It doesn't seem to get hot in the UP so you can always just run the fan at night which will bring in cooler air. The wifi was reliable and was faster than I had expected it to be. The motel is a pretty decent place to stay at, I can't imagine any other motels in the area that have better restaurant options as close by. read more

We had an excellent experience. I had the white fish dinner and my wife had a grilled chicken sandwich. Both were delicious and portions were generous. Prices were quite reasonable. Restrooms were clean - an excellent indicator of overall cleanliness. The best part of all though: Service was excellent. That's rare now with covid raging. What a total dump! Check out the reviews of this place on TripAdvisor, probably the worst hotel I've ever stayed in. Spent one night here, cost $55 for a double...should have been about $20. They still use keys here and either someone forgot their key and kicked our door in at one point, or the police raided the place and knocked it in, either way the door jamb was obviously busted and cheaply repaired. Understand this, people live in this hotel and there is a bar attached to the second building. So there was a ton of music noise until 2am with people hovering around outside. The lady at the front desk said to go ahead and smoke in the room if we wanted, although all the doors say non-smoking. There is a giant dog that starts barking at 6:30am that lives there and doesn't stop until you checkout. The floors in the hallways and near the bathrooms feel like they are going to fall in as you walk on them. When we went to checkout in the morning we couldn't find anyone so we left our keys on the desk. Searched around for coffee or a continental breakfast...nada. Not that I wanted to eat here, I just wanted to get on the road quickly and go home. This place is kinda scary, my buddy slept with his clothes on, on top of the comforter because he feared they had not been washed. The pillows here were all flat, threadbare, and if you looked at them outside of the pillowcases, they were stained with God knows what. And even after all that...the TV didn't work. read more

Not satisfied with the service. Feels like I wasted $118 for one night. Just because it was July 4th Weekend and most of the hotels were booked, I had to book this hotel. Everything looked good but the biggest problem was while sleeping. The AC worked for a while but when the compressor turned off, it never turned back. When you call the reception, they keep on saying it will turn off but it will turn back on and it does that to maintain the temperature. I understand but this AC won't turn back at all. Finally I had to get a Fan from them and open windows so as to get sleep. Wasted 2 hours in this. Other thing is there are only few restaurants nearby which closes at around 9-9:30pm. read more

We are driving through the UP on our way to Paradise to see the falls. (I'm from Phoenix, AZ - my sister & mom live in Traverse City). I am a vegetarian and was starving, so we pulled over. My sister & mom got a beer & fried mushrooms (which were very good & piping hot). I asked if I could have a baked potato with sautéed veggies, like they would put in an omelette. Place is a bit dated but food is great especially if you like home made pasties. A bit pricey but very good food

I would never suggest this place. Very outdated and dirty. Beds uncomfortable, you can see where toilet had been leaking and not fixed properly. The restraunt had a musky smell with no updates either. There was a pair of tennis shoes in the middle of kitchen. The hotel hallways has spots where u could see where ceiling had leaks on ceiling and on floor. Pay a little more money and find somewhere else to stay read more

We were very disappointed in the service at Zellers. The room was ok, if all you wanted was sleeping arrangements. WiFi rarely worked. Afternoon front desk worker very rude. Would not help with WiFi trouble. Ignored us in favor of "bikers" that were outside; not paying attention to front desk. Pool and hot tub not working. Did not look it had been attempted to fix.
