I'd heard a few not especially positive things about the UP. It was supposed to be the backwoods Kentucky section of Michigan, the "deep in the West Verginia holler" version of the north. But the more I travel the more the lesson gets pounded into my head. The stereotypes are mostly bogus, people are basically the same and most folks are low key, solid kind o' people. There was this one interesting quirk about the UP though. I cross the Mackinac bridge and almost immediately see a sign for pasties. I roll less than 100 yards and there's a sign on the other side of the road. I roll another 6 feet and there's a third sign! I've never even heard of pasties except for the Australian version and not once saw a sign for them on the mitten side of Michigan but suddenly in the UP it appears to be the only thing they eat. After the 5th or 6th place I finally had to stop and see what I'd been missing. The girl described that it was either ground beef or bison fried in a dough and covered, for another dollar or so, with gravy. I opted for the beef, with gravy and was a little shocked when the gal handed me a thing the size of a softball. I was thinking snack. This thing is a monster! The gravy was just too much but the pasty was awesome. I wasn't incredibly hungry and I'd planned on eating maybe half of it but 45 minutes later and I'd wolfed down the whole thing. No need for dinner tonight! I poured the gravy out on the side of the road. The pasty alone might have been worth 5 stars but the gravy kind o' messed that up. A unique, delicious regional food. And now I can brag that I've eaten a softball! read more

Wow. First, the address listed as of 9/10/19 is wrong. The correct address is 4476 West US-2 Brevort, MI. 49760. Today we had the famous bison pastie which was outstanding. We learned that locals like ketchup on their pastries if they are north of the bridge and those south of the bridge like gravy. Our very friendly waitress, Marie, explained although she lives north she loves the gravy. In all honesty the pastie didn't need any help or enhancement. Every bite was loaded with flavor. We also had the freshly caught whitefish which was fried to perfection. Having listened to Marie tell some local stories, including serving guests in her snowmobile suit made our wonderful lunch fantastic. read more

I've had a lot of pasty's in my day in the UP, and I would put the Bison Pasty here at the top of the list!

We stoped here for breakfast on our way to a U.P. adventure. This is just what I would expect from a small town UP restaurant. The staff was so friendly. I was so much at ease here that I had no problem starting a conversation with a table next to us. I had a farmer's omelette. The ingredients were fresh as can be. I'm used to getting frozen shredded hash browns in my farmer's, but not these ones. They used fresh home fries in mine. You wouldn't believe the difference it made. As I said before the atmosphere was friendly and I felt welcome. The coffeee was fresh and the service was outstanding. I give this place 4 stars because it was just what I needed but my server was new and needed to learn the menu a little more. I was never informed of the breakfast special, which I think I would have perfered. read more

This review is for the whitetail restaurant: Nice friendly lady welcomed me in, cozy little joint. Clean. I got a bison pasty to go and it was... Not the best. The gravy was poured onto the pasty, (makes the crust soggy, all the other pasty joints I've had good pasty at are very deliberate about putting it in a side cup), the crust itself was very doughy and chewy rather than crispy/pastry-ish. The gravy was really salty. The fillings are pretty flavorless (while still tasting salty) and the filling itself is too coarse and should be more thinly cut. I can't say anything about the other food here but I would definitely not return for another pasty here. read more

So... this place is good. For a bunch of foodies, we may not have picked it based off of looks alone, but we were staying on Brevort Lake and needed a quick meal nearby. OMG! Blew us away! While I typically don't write reviews, I had to post about the White Tail Resort.... The incredible staff, the most amazing homemade chips we have ever had and the most delicious pastie! The homemade chips came out piping hot- ruined me for life and won't be able to eat other chips! My boyfriend typically doesn't enjoy pasties.... He LOVED it as did I.... And I must mention the handmade Michigan wood carvings!!! Got a gift for my goddaughters baby arriving in December!!! The name is deceiving. It's not really a resort but a small motel with a restaurant. One of the few restaurants on US 2 miles past St. Ignace. We stopped for lunch. I ordered a hot turkey sandwich which was real turkey not lunch meat and my husband ordered a patty melt. Both were tasty. Service was great. read more

This local eatery has seen its share of carpet tread but it's clean and friendly. Two of us ordered beef pasties with gravy and two of us ordered whitefish baskets. When asked, Susie told us she made the pasties and they are made fresh daily. I asked Susie which was better--the perch or the whitefish. She told me the perch was frozen from Gordons and the whitefish was fresh from local fishermen. This was a no-brainer. The whitefish was probably the freshest tasting fish I have ever had (and I live in the Great Lake state). It was so flaky and moist that it resembled a juicy chicken breast. Yummo! The high shelves were adorned with hand-crafted wooden vehicles ranging from a crane to a front loader to a log hauler. Susie proudly informed us her brother makes them all. Further, for $125, you could own one. We are debating to go back and get that log hauler. I can't wait to go back on our return trip! read more

Excellent, we stopped down the road to see a limited menu, rude service, and price gouging. We came here and while it was hot(maybe the AC was broken?) the prices were reasonable, the food was excellent and they had about anything you wanted. I had the Philly steak and cheese with homemade potato chips(best I ever had) and deep fried pickles(try these cold.. so good). The service was great, the place was beautiful(they even have little puzzles and games you can play with sitting on the windowsill). If you are around, try it out. Probably the best restaurant I have been to in the U.P.. hell probably best place I ever went to. I spent $4.99 I believe on the pickles (big ass plate) and about $7.50 on the Philly, worth every dime. read more

So, I guess when you are in the UP of Michigan you need to try pasties somewhere right? So after seeing sign after sign, we decided to stop and check it out. White Tail seemed to me lik ea very beachy seacoast place, which I guess it kinda is. Anyways....I got a pasty and salad and the pasty was absolutely delicious. It was turkey because they had run out of the other fillings, but it was ok! Also, I always want my little dough pies doused in gravy and they did just that, and it was so delicious. Quaint little stop off the US2 with delicious food, attentive and friendly staff, and speedy service. If you're tired from a long drive, there is a motel just behind the restaurant. French toast is amazing and it's real French bread too! Open year-round and it's now going to be our new stop in the UP. A fun late-night stop just before closing time. First time in the U.P. so we had to try the pasties and the fish fry. Our excellent waitress Tina steered us to the perch which is caught locally and comes in fresh almost every day. The batter was crispy and the fish super fresh. The house-made pasty is from a secret recipe that I wish I knew. Flaky crust and chunky beef filling with veggies. Too full for dessert but they looked great. Tina also taught us about the history of pasties on the U.P. Overall very glad we stopped in. read more

What a great little place to stop and eat!! We were here 5 years ago on our way back from Sturgis SD and it's just as great now as it was then. The pasties only come with onions (I know, that's the only way they always come) but the waitress gave me a business card and she said if we were back in the area and gave a days notice they could homemake some for me to go!! The food was amazing, my husband got both a beef pastor and the whitefish basket, and I had the bacon cheeseburger. The original plan for dinner was to make it to Manistique, but we were delayed in the lower peninsula, and it was past 7:00 PM as we made it out of St. Ignace. My partner is not pleasant when she's hungry, and I realized that there was a chance we wouldn't make it to Manistique before the real restaurants closed, so I suggested this very, shall we say unassuming looking, establishment that I spotted. The ambiance wasn't, but the waitress was friendly and fast. There were actually a couple of other tables filled even though it was going on 8 by now. My partner loves good whitefish, and Michigan's UP is famous for that, and pasties. Both were on their fairly deep menu, and the waitress was quick to recommend both, and specifically the bison pastie. Bison? What the heck, why not? I can say without hesitation, that this was some of the best UP fare I've ever had. I swear they caught the fish and cleaned right before they cooked it, it was that fresh (the waitress did tell us that they got it fresh caught daily just down the road) and the bison pastie was just outstanding - perfect seasoning and gravy to die for! I can vouch for it being homemade because I was watching the cook get a bunch ready for tomorrow while we were sitting there. We liked it so much, we hit it again on our way back a few days later, and it was just as damn good as the first time! If you're driving through the Michigan UP, and you want to experience both of their most famous foods, in a perfect "up north" setting, you've just got to try the White Tail Resort! read more

The staff here were really great. We had the pasties and they didn't have the best flavor and were soggy - they seemed maybe old.

I have a place close by and I must say that the Whitetail never gets old! Best Pasties, great fried chicken, pizza is amazingly good for a roadside diner as is the salads, love the basics like burgers, blt's, clubs, etc. If you want a great meal without breaking the bank this is a MUST STOP. read more

One of our US 2 favorite mom/pop places. Lots of homemade great food. We love their pasties..light crust with lots of filling with just the right seasoning. Coleslaw really good too. But our favorite item...Bread pudding! We got one for the road. Great service too and very very clean. read more

Foody destination alert! The last time I was up in the U.P., about 3 years ago, we stopped for lunch on the way back downstate. Three years ago, and I still remember the stuffed cabbage soup. So this trip, we planned our trip with White Tail Resort restaurant in mind. We were lucky enough to make it for Taco Tuesday, which is actually more than tacos: there is an entire page of Mexican meals on the Tuesday menu. First, a basket of homemade tortilla chips with excellent salsa. The most perfect tortilla chips ever - in a paper-lined basket, they were tasty and light, not greasy. My friend ordered a Reuben. It came with homemade potato chips that should come with a "warning, addicting" label. The Reuben itself, she said, was perfect, with every ingredient above what you expect at a "family" restaurant. I couldn't resist ordering off the Taco Tuesday menu, and decided on the enchiladas with a side of refried beans. It was a real hit. This Mexican food was as good as, if not better than, that of the authentic restaurants we frequent in Detroit. The beans were made in-house and were full of flavor with a silky, creamy texture. The enchilada was stuffed full of a mouth-watering thick meat sauce, and topped with enchilada sauce. Dessert? Impossible for us, as the meals were so good, but also very large servings, and neither of us stopped eating to save room for dessert! They have homemade pie and amazing bread pudding that my husband had last time we were here those three years ago.... Service was friendly and professional. The meals came very quickly. Warning: the restaurant IS a foody destination, as well as a local favorite, and they have beer/wine now, so around dinner time it fills up quickly. read more

The restaurant is like a small log cabin simple and clean. , but the food and the hospitality were like a mansion. The staff were friendly, and informative. The perch , whitefish, and pasties, were extra fresh and delicious! Joel's meatloaf was a culinary perfection, . The pork steak covered in mushroom gravy, and mash potatoes was mouth watering. For the week my brother and friends ate here , every entree was fresh, tasty, and extremely delicious. Try the chicken dumpling soup and all their soups, The salads and coleslaw were outstanding, They even have a great pizza, burritos and hot sandwiches .To top it off, try the most delicious and taste pleasing, bread pudding the best I can say I have ever eaten the many years I have been alive!. I purchased two extra helping to take home. They also have excellent, coffee and beverages, plus a liquor license, with a selection of IPA beers.
