My welcome upon entry was inviting, the space is very cozy with some pretty dope artwork. The employees will offer coffee, tea, water, or wine to help with your relaxation. My masseur for the service was Elaine and she was magnificent!!! She reassured me that I would be good in her hands and I really was. So delightful, pleasant, informative, and patient. This is a black-owned establishment and I only discovered that once I asked. Beyond met my expectations that I have to come back each time I'm in need of treatment or a self-care day. TL;DR: Don't buy a gift certificate/card from this place. Zen and the City really appears to be set up for members and isn't equipped to interact with outsider customers. Unsurprisingly, most of the negative reviews are from people trying to deal with their gift certificates or gift cards since they are not able to provide reasonable service to people unfamiliar with their procedures. Throughout the process, I had to chase the owner, Gary, repeatedly over text and phone in order to get any information. A list of things I wish I knew before attempting to use a gift certificate here: I was alone in the building, not just the room, with an unknown man. Zen and the City is a therapist-owned establishment that has appointment-only booking for services. In light of this description, I probably should have known that I would be alone with my massage therapist. Except the website contains none of that information, which I only learned about after the appointment, so I was blindsided. My massage therapist was a very nice man who did his best to make me feel welcome and taken care of (Thank you, Anthony. You were the only good part of this whole experience!), but it was hard to set aside how uncomfortable it was to be alone with a strange man without knowing before that no one else would be there. The gift certificates (physical) and gift cards (e-cards) are redeemed in different ways. The website doesn't make it clear (either in the description or during the purchase) that physical gift certificates are only redeemable for a specific service, and that the gift certificates and gift cards are considered two different products. When I got the certificate for Zen and the City, neither my father (who bought this as a gift) nor I knew there was a difference between the two until after I had my appointment and was told otherwise. If you redeem the service-specific gift certificate for the wrong service by mistake, Zen and the City will not inform you of the mistake when you book your appointment and will instead pocket the remaining money without further services or refund, even after their error is pointed out to them. I suspect they would have prevented me from redeeming the gift certificate for something that was MORE money than the one I used, but when I accidentally used it from something that cost LESS, I was only told afterwards when I couldn't fix my mistake, or receive a refund for the balance. The initial confirmation text message is meaningless. It doesn't accurately reflect that an appointment's successfully been made (because you get a text regardless), and it does not result in you being correctly signed up to receive text messages. Instead, they will contact you by email, no matter your indicated preference (which they don't know anyway because they never ask for your preference). If there is a problem with your email address, they will not use your phone number to follow up. There will be no further attempt to contact you. I'll be honest and admit that I made quite a few mistakes in attempting to deal with Zen and the City, and I accept the responsibility of those mistakes. However, I think it's important for future potential customers to know beforehand that this is the kind of business that is happy to take advantage of your confusion, your mistakes, or your unexpected illness (check out their sick policy). It's up to you whether you want to risk giving this place your money and time. read more

I really enjoyed my massage with Kelly. She was able to work my tech neck, sore legs, and tight hips. I felt very relieved after leaving her, and almost euphoric. I feel excellent and I'm happy with the service provided. The massages at Zen & The City are definitely worth a try! I have two points for improvement: I had to dock a star because the shoe thing. It seems as though the owner is okay walking around the hardwoods barefoot and potentially due to spirituality, guests are expected to remove shoes. I came to get my massage on December 16th. Literally the middle of December, and I walked in with my shoes. I arrived to the massage room with my shoes. I removed them for the massage and put them in the corner, but as I was finishing my massage the therapist said "please wait to put your shoes on till you step outside, technically we're not allowed to wear shoes in here." So, while I'm calm from the just-finished massage, I step out onto the freezing hardwoods in this big old rowhome and I actually start teeth clattering shivering. She's trying to talk tip, after care, and I'm just like, "Coat? Scarf? P-p-p-please." It was like a total shock to my body after the warm massage, but like really unpleasant shock that kinda felt painful. My teeth were clattering and goosebumps were on my legs. Your spirituality ends where my body autonomy begins. I should not have to suffer in that way, and maybe keep the shoes thing at your home, not at your business. Additionally, I'm sad the tipping system isn't as straightforward as other places. I received a small business card with a venmo and cashapp while I was shivering trying to fumble with my scarf and coat, that it must've fell somewhere. I LOVE it here. The ambiance is so welcoming and warm. There is a shared space where you are able to relax and wait. Peaceful music, burning incense, beautiful artwork; such a great vibe and an experience you CANNOT miss. There is a no shoe policy which is amazing, cleanliness is definitely a priority here and I applaud them for their efforts. Refreshments were offered as well as a warm smile from the staff. Incompetent customer service - unable to book or get a refund from a gift certificate. My wife received a Mother's Day gift massage from our son. We never got a certificate in the mail but my son forwarded the receipt showing the purchase. My wife tried to book on the site and it won't let you without the coupon. They explicitly do not answer their phone - a message says to email or use the (not useable) website. Gary Davenport responds to the emails telling her to use the website (which doesn't work without the non-existent coupon) and ignores requests for a quick call to work through it. She figured out a hack around to get to the actual scheduling page - schedules a massage at the time and with a masseuse from the drop box, gets a confirmation email. And then is told the day of that the masseuse doesn't come in till later - the instructions to rebook don't work. Within an hour of the cancellation email, they unilaterally cancel the whole appointment. At no time have they responded to the requests to get on a call. This has been going on since May 25th. In frustration, my wife asked for the gift to be refunded back to our son in an email - with no response (oh surprise). It shouldn't take 23 days of effort to still fail to book a massage. Just had an amazing 90 minute couples massage with Gary & Karlee and WOW let me tell you - I feel like a brand new woman (& my body legit feels 5 years younger lol). So fyi I went about two weeks ago, I waited to give this review so I can be truthful and let you all know what me experience was like before, during and after. My back was killing me the day I searched for a massage therapist near me . The bed I have is no longer comfortable and my back is paying for it. I chose Zen and the city for its location between my job and home, and the price was not bad. I get off work and head over to the location. Once I got there I was in awe . Taking the shoes off was a must that I respected a lot , Kwame ( my massage therapist) then greeted me with positive energy and while filling out the paperwork I was offered water or wine which was on time because I was in fact thirsty , sore , and in need of a drink . From there I was instructed to wash my hands which was very sanitary in my eyes and appreciated. Once I was done with that , I was shown my room , instructed on how to get in the bed, undress to my comfort level, and where to put my things once undress and she left . Once she returned I was in the bed and ready to start. I was in her hands and they felt amazing. She really showed up n showed out with them hands. Her techniques and pressures was all on point! Very good at what she does, professional and all. I got the 90 min and was glad I did. Focusing on my entire body and was getting all my knots out was what I needed. Just an overall great service. So once done I was given instructions to get dressed , reminded where the bathroom was if I needed it and to come to the front. My body felt new I was rejuvenated and after I left I felt great . Today, we booked a massage for the both of us (1-hour each) and man oh man did Gary come through as he always does. From the ambiance of the space, to the offering of tea or wine to help you settle in to your appointment, you can tell from the point of entry that you're in for a treat. Each time I'm invited to the massage table, I am reminded of just how amazing he is at what he does! I think "bodywork" is the term he used to reference this magical experience.
