My frustration is with the cancellation system (which is very much like every other gym ive seen... I thought I found a gym that wouldnt nickel and dime if you cancelled a monthly plan. that was incorrect). I signed up for the $20 monthly plan. It says no commitment, whatever that means. When cancelling I still got charged $70 just to cancel. Really great feeling knowing I had to choose to either cancel my membership, eat another $20 despite not going to the gym as much lately (depression is a struggle), or get food/groceries. Disappointing. I tried to read what I could before signing up, but I guess I missed something that wasn't made very obvious. What does no commitment mean in this sense? I don't really understand now. This problem is not unique to this gym chain--This happens at most, if not all of them. Still I hoped theyd be different. Egg on my face. I will not return. I'd rather save money for my own weights and a treadmill at home. Oh well.

I think there's no better value in the Baltimore area. I've been to Merritt, and although it's closer to where I live, I refuse to pay those premium prices. I was a member of Under Armour Performance Center downtown, and although that space is spectacular, the parking was a nightmare. I drive 15 minutes each way to Gold's in Dundalk and I don't have to worry about parking and I have access to a world class gym. There's something about Dundalk, but the people here are friendly and polite. You don't get a douchey vibe here. The gym went through the $1M renovation roughly 4 years ago and they are still adding machines/equipment to this day. They shuffle equipment around from time to time and relocate/repurpose. It's neat seeing the transformation. A couple of gripes I have with this gym is the dumbbell rack and the weights in the wrong place. I've provided feedback on my issues with this for years. There used to be free weights all over the floor. This has improved, but members still do not place dumbbells where they belong. I think this gym needs to label the racks so members know where each weight belongs. It looks like they may have added or upgraded the racks, but there is still some improvement that can be made. Secondly, the men's locker room is pretty gross. It seems like they tried doing something with the lockers, but the toilets and floors are pretty nasty. I do my best to not have to go in there, but I don't know if they have the means to improve this space.

Some instructors are better with explaining how to do the movements correctly. I really have enjoyed my classes with Taylor and Avery (best music as well). I've taken classes with 5 other instructors as well. Another trend I've noticed is the lack of inclusivity. I've been to other workout studios and there's usually a culture of kindness, here I'll smile at the women and they will literally look at me like or just looking up/down at you... it seems oddly competitive? My other experience as well is one of the instructors kept calling me by the name of the only other Asian girl in the studio, I didn't notice it until midway through class. Lastly I think the cost for 8 classes a month for $200 is a bit steep when looking at Solidcore/Core power yoga unlimited classes are $180 per month. Something to note! I definitely would've kept going if the cost made sense and I could frequent classes with solid instructors.

The classes are challenging yet fun, and I love the 1.5 class format - it's the perfect balance. My only wish is that they offered more Sculpt or high cardio classes, as I tend to lean towards those. TL;DR: Don't buy a gift certificate/card from this place…read more Zen and the City really appears to be set up for members and isn't equipped to interact with outsider customers. Unsurprisingly, most of the negative reviews are from people trying to deal with their gift certificates or gift cards since they are not able to provide reasonable service to people unfamiliar with their procedures. Throughout the process, I had to chase the owner, Gary, repeatedly over text and phone in order to get any information. A list of things I wish I knew before attempting to use a gift certificate here: I was alone in the building, not just the room, with an unknown man. Zen and the City is a therapist-owned establishment that has appointment-only booking for services. In light of this description, I probably should have known that I would be alone with my massage therapist. Except the website contains none of that information, which I only learned about after the appointment, so I was blindsided. My massage therapist was a very nice man who did his best to make me feel welcome and taken care of (Thank you, Anthony. You were the only good part of this whole experience!), but it was hard to set aside how uncomfortable it was to be alone with a strange man without knowing before that no one else would be there. The gift certificates (physical) and gift cards (e-cards) are redeemed in different ways. The website doesn't make it clear (either in the description or during the purchase) that physical gift certificates are only redeemable for a specific service, and that the gift certificates and gift cards are considered two different products. When I got the certificate for Zen and the City, neither my father (who bought this as a gift) nor I knew there was a difference between the two until after I had my appointment and was told otherwise. If you redeem the service-specific gift certificate for the wrong service by mistake, Zen and the City will not inform you of the mistake when you book your appointment and will instead pocket the remaining money without further services or refund, even after their error is pointed out to them. I suspect they would have prevented me from redeeming the gift certificate for something that was MORE money than the one I used, but when I accidentally used it from something that cost LESS, I was only told afterwards when I couldn't fix my mistake, or receive a refund for the balance. The initial confirmation text message is meaningless. It doesn't accurately reflect that an appointment's successfully been made (because you get a text regardless), and it does not result in you being correctly signed up to receive text messages. Instead, they will contact you by email, no matter your indicated preference (which they don't know anyway because they never ask for your preference). If there is a problem with your email address, they will not use your phone number to follow up. There will be no further attempt to contact you. I'll be honest and admit that I made quite a few mistakes in attempting to deal with Zen and the City, and I accept the responsibility of those mistakes. However, I think it's important for future potential customers to know beforehand that this is the kind of business that is happy to take advantage of your confusion, your mistakes, or your unexpected illness (check out their sick policy). It's up to you whether you want to risk giving this place your money and time.

I'm talking throw me into the mouth of a fire breathing dragon, allow me to suffer a bit, sometimes tease me with a breath of fresh air, allow me to continue melting, and throw some positivity in to keep me from completely sputtering out. Thankfully, Breathing Dragon lives up to its name. This delightful hot yoga studio, which was converted from a core power yoga studio, has everything I need to be happily at home. Breathing Dragon IS absolutely hot. While a hot yoga room is ideal, teaching is VERY important to me. Mori, the owner, is exceptional!!! She is, what I would refer to in the yoga world, a Master Teacher. She is extremely knowledgable about the body, the yoga practice, has over 20 years of teaching experience, and radiates positive energy. She has funny jokes, inspiring quotes, and advanced corrections which is particularly important to someone like me who has almost 22 years of yoga practice. She walks around with a ruler, ensures proper alignment, and provided me with hands on corrections, which I just adore. Thank you, Mori. Her rays of sunshine alleviated (some of) my suffering - after all, I chose to practice in the hottest spot in the room (far left when facing the mirror). Mori did kindly advise me of that spot, but I love a challenge. Let me say, Mori's class is a pleasant challenge. I have practiced at 100s of studios around the US and other countries. I have very high standards. Mori meets Every Single One of them. Would I practice here again? Absolutely. The studio has showers, lockers (bring your own lock), towels/mats for rent, and cubby holes for shoes at the door. Mori of Breathing Dragon has fostered a beautiful community of welcoming practitioners. If you move to downtown Baltimore or just passing through and want to make friends or just simply meet quality humans, practice at Breathing Dragon.
