Some friends and I checked out this place for the first time last Wednesday and we absolutely LOVE it. We got the 1-hour foot massage package which was actually a 45min foot massage plus a 15min back massage. We came back again yesterday with some other friends. We got different therapists this time and the experience was still as good as last time. The front-desk person is fluent in English and was able to answer our questions and helped us with options. However, most of the massage therapists there speaks only mandarin so it could be a bit hard to communicate with them if you don't know the language. Overall we had great experiences at this place. I paid in cash on a Tuesday afternoon so the total was either $55 or $60 (I can't remember). I was happy to leave a large tip because the woman who did my massage was amazing! But this one in Berkeley is perfect for me, the therapists are professional, they know what they are doing, my best massage experience so far. It's the Chinese reflexology style, very very hard. this place is awesome. IT is affordable and they really work you. It is Chinese style massage and reflexology. They are professional and have a routine they follow. If you want them to focus on a certain body part you have to tell and show them because some of the staff do not speak much English. You can make an appointment if you like to plan ahead, but I usually just call within 15 minutes of when I plan to arrive to check if there is a wait. Once when I walked in they told it it would be a 1 hour wait and unfortunately I did not have the time to spare. Cash price is at least $5 less than credit card. The masseurs expect a tip. Wow! I feel like a new woman! I was in pain yesterday, I couldn't turn my head without wincing, my whole body ached, I had numbness and tingling in my right hand every morning on waking Not good! So I saw Betty who I had seen once before, but this time for a longer massage. She's a slight lady but she packs a powerful punch! Lol! She climbed on the table and used her knees to massage away the huge knots. She found the source of my pain and wailed on me with knees, elbows and hands for the next 90 minutes! My nose and eyes were streaming the whole time as my released toxins. When I got home last night I thought I was coming down with the flu, again my eyes and nose were crying as my body continued to let go of toxins. Yes, I felt crap last night but this morning? Wow! I felt clear-headed, I've been coughing up phlegm easily, (gross I know but 'better out than in' as my Mother would say, God rest her soul), I stand straighter (!) Really horrible massage. The "therapist" obviously does not have a license, she was very rough, had no sequence, massaged the weirdest spots for what felt like forever. She also didn't ask me any questions about problem areas or how intense I wanted it. The staff is overall pretty nice but during my massage there were employees having a conversation right outside of the door, it lasted at least 5 minutes and was very distracting. I left in more pain then I had when I got there. I wish I never had this experience. read more

I've been coming to this place regularly for the past few months, it seems that they have hard time keeping their best therapists there. The recent receptionist is disorganized, she wrote down my name incorrectly when my husband made the appointment over the phone, he had to repeat my name several times, when I arrived, she asked me to wait in the waiting room, but then called me from the front desk area to confirm my reservation, she was confused with her own reservation system. My favorite therapists are Roger, Ivy, but both are gone! When I was there a few days ago, Laura was my therapist, she was good, but not for someone who is looking for a relaxing and gentle massage. She really worked every inch of your body including stepping on top of your back and walking up and down of your spine. During my massage, there was a loud argument right outside of my room between the receptionist and one of the therapists and it lasted for 5 minutes until Laura went out to tell them to quiet down. I hope they get better organized and able to retain their best talent. read more

I was desperate to get a massage at 8:30 at night and the usual spot was closed so I came here and I have to say it's the WORST massage I've ever had. I did the hot stone massage and the lady didn't know what the appropriate temperature the rocks should be to touch my skin. She threw the rocks in a bag when she was done using them instead of gently putting them away. She patted me most of the time cause she was lazy or tired. I was frustrated vs relaxed the entire time. I would go to zen day spa once per month. Because of lack of exercise, I would get so sore and tense under my shoulder blade, shoulder, and neck. I would start to feel really uncomfortable and headache. Zen day spa is those typically asia massage place so they would literally use all their might to massage out the knots. I always get the 60 min $40 full body oil massage. I particularly like Angela who works from Thursday to Sundays but to be honest, all the other ladies are as good. I would really recommend this place to someone who is willing to go through the pain to untie their knots and for sure you'll be sore the day after, but I feel a lot better after the massage so it is definitely worth it. This place is a little hidden gem. I won't ever go to a Burke Williams style spa again, it's just not worth It. My BF and I recently visited Zen Day Spa for a couples massage and had a great experience. The people are friendly, the rooms are clean, the massages are great and the prices are even better. No frills, no expensive candles, no fancy decor just a great massage and a quiet and peaceful room. The massage therapists listened to what kind of massage you wanted and adjusted as needed. Poor. No English. Not receptive. Not willing to accommodate injuries. Did not listen to input. Would not accommodate my needs. Loudly burped FOUR times during my session. And when I politely told her I wanted to end the session, she proceeded to force me back down onto the table. I left early. The male receptionist would not refund my money and I will definitely not being going back. The lack of knowledge and expertise at this place is blatantly and painfully obvious. Never again! Strongly warn against this place! Probably one of the worst, least relaxing and least therapeutic experiences I have ever experienced. Front Desk:: big language issue, no clear description of services offered, options or prices so you get pushed into whatever you can communicate. Ok I can get past that figuring it's all about the massage right? Foot Massage: dark room, row of approx 6 recliner chairs, looked promising, others looked relaxed. My "therapist" was very "fast and rough" yanking my already rolled up jeans up on over my knees, yanking my feet out of the tub, drying them roughly and flinging them aside. It was really jarring and rude! Then the "massage" - wow, so much pain! I winced and held my breath throughout, but assumed that would be more therapeutic in the long run (I'm no stranger to deep tissue!) but this was SO painful, really beyond the pale. The approach was fast and rough, rather than slow, smooth and gentle pressure. Back Massage: I mentioned I had a crick in my neck so he indicated he would focus on that. OMG. so rough, so fast, gruff and so painful. He pushed and rubbed so hard on one spot my neck he actually broke skin and I had a sore for the next 5 days. I was freaking out about it getting infected! After the very painful, rough 30 minutes (which I should have just stopped and left, but I kept trying to give the benefit of the doubt that it would "help" in the long run) I finally left. Paid and could not get out there any faster. I was covered in bruises (I don't bruise easily!) and sore for the next 5 days (plus the wound on my neck). I wanted this place to be a great find, especially given all the positive reviews, maybe it makes a difference on who you get...but my experience was so bad I was tempted to report them to authorities - but I've chosen to out them on here instead! Dark, soothing atmosphere with friendly receptionist. I got the reflexology-back massage combo for $30. Both the reflexology massage and massage were hard but I tend to like a rougher massage. I appreciated the minor details with the massages including the hot wash cloths, comfortable chairs, and the massage sequences. I am a weekly customer of this place for a few reasons. First, it's got a lot of basics going for it: parking lot, near the highway, in the same building with a yoga studio (Core Power Yoga) that I like, and I never have a problem getting in right away. I've only ever gotten the hour long foot reflexology, but it is amazing... $20 (if you pay cash, $25 with credit card, plus tip) or $17 if you come between 10am-noon. Because I am a regular, I have found a favorite masseuse (I won't tell you his name so his dance card doesn't get full!). Each of them have a different style; I prefer gentle and slow, some people like intense and invigorating. Talk to the person at the front desk and tell him what style you like and you should get directed to the right person. If you don't ask, they won't ask you about why style or intensity you prefer, so speak up! The foot reflexology takes place in a large darkened room with maybe 10 chairs that is very clean and relaxing. Sometimes they play music, sometimes they don't. There is always the sound of running water from a fountain. After the foot massage is done they will give you slippers and escort you into another room with a massage bed where you lie face down (fully clothed) and get a 10 min full body massage. I like how this rounds out the experience. I've taken 6 of my friends here over time and they have all liked it, but the guys said that their leg hairs get tugged by certain masseuses, so it's worth being aware of if you are of the hairy persuasion. read more

I came here for a 1 hour massage for some sore muscles from skiing. The masseuse didn't speak English when I tried to explain which body part I wanted to work on. So, I tried Mandarin. Nope, didn't speak that well either. I tried to tell her that my neck was sore but she misunderstood it as she hurt my neck. She kept trying to tell me no, she didn't, when all I wanted was for her to massage my neck. We argued for a couple minutes because she thought I accused her of hurting me. So, I asked her to get the receptionist who spoke english. She refused and shook her head no, thinking I want to complain about her. After a couple more minutes, the receptionist finally came to clear the misunderstanding. When the massage was over, none of the muscles I wanted got worked on except for my shoulders, which she went HAM on, it was painful because she kept digging at the same spot. I really enjoy Zen Day Spa for a spontaneous, inexpensive, relaxing massage. For under $40, I can get a 70 minute combination foot massage and full body massage. It's a great deal and very convenient because I can pretty much call any time and get an immediate appointment. The massage is deep and intense, but they let up if you tell them it's too deep. I called kind of last minute, got into a clean, private room right away with a nice greeting - they were ready for me the second I walked in. Super sweet. Lilly was GREAT. Doesn't matter whether or not there's a language barrier because she really knows anatomy and was all business: found all the knots, worked hard for the full hour, and gave a great, FIRM massage -the kind that actually does something for your aches and pains. I love Zen Day Spa! I have been 4 times and plan on returning. What makes this place so fantastic is the price $35 for an hour, and the massage itself. I always do half foot massage half table. The place is very clean. I was surprised at how clean. They start you in the big chairs and soak your feet. the lights are dim and you relax. I love the technique used in the foot massage . They bring hot towels and wipe you off . Its very pampering . I am an absolute foot massage addict. This place delivers. No pressure is too much for me. They really work hard there too. I have had great massage there and decent massage there. Some people are better at table massage and some are great at both. Andy is my absolute favorite. I cannot say enough about his gift as a masseuse. Like I said even the other people here will do. Every single person there is good and nice as can be. But Andy is next level good.They also have heated massage beds. I love this place because its somewhat reasonable in price. People who love massage should do it regularly. I realize that writing a review is an individual opinion...so here it goes. My husband called on a Tuesday evening at 6:00 and asked if they had any openings-the woman on the phone said they had a 7:00. Then, I got on Yelp to read about the place and I realized that you have to specifically request a woman for your massage when you make your appointment. I called back and they switched me to a woman at 8:00. I arrived and was told that the massage was going to cost 45$ instead of 40$ because I was using a credit card! The woman asked me if this was my first time there, and when I told her it was she waived the 5$ fee. So, Be prepared with CASH in hand to avoid that 5$ fee. No one there speaks much English so there wasn't much talking going on (which is fine by me). They took me to a small cozy room and told me to undress. The masseuse came in 5 minutes later and we began. Like I said no one really talks so it was interesting being massaged steadily and then with no warning she began beating the hell out of my back. She was very thorough and she was able to find my trouble spots in my back right away! If you are a sensitive person or bruise easily I would suggest requesting a woman because they aren't so heavy handed! I still woke up the next day extremely sore...don't be afraid to tell them that they are hurting you. If you are a modest person be prepared that you are expected to get fully naked and at certain points the masseuse will pull back the blanket and massaging your butt and legs, so you will feel exposed. If you are going in the evening time you should try to be early because you will be competing with the yoga studio customers for parking spots in the extremely small parking lot!
