Went here today to redo both my ear piercings, James helped out and I'd 100% recommend it. The first thing he did was make sure my ears were actually closed, which is nice because most piercers would just pierce it regardless for the additional cash. When I asked he helped me figure out placement to where to put the next one/ why he thinks that they should be there. Also he actually cares about his clients!! Finding a tattoo artist that cares about there work, and there customers is very hard, more so finding one that is very creative and is willing to do the work to make your idea a reality. I found my boy Erwin through a recommendation from one of my bro's so I made and appointment. The shop is very homey and comfortable, and the vibe is right. All of the staff was very funny and outgoing and made you feel welcomed. I really enjoyed this experience. Brook did my tattoo and it turned out amazing he was super easy to work with about the tattoo as well! This shop was super clean and all around an amazing experience! This was actually the biggest tattoo that I had gotten done and I almost passed out due to not drinking enough water which is completely my fault! My husband went here, artist was Jesse. His tat needed some touch ups, and Jesse said they are free and to come back when it was needed. When my husband came for the touch up, Jesse acted put off for having to do the touch up and passive aggressive about having to save this appointment time for a touch up when he could be getting paid from real tattoo appointments instead. My husband isnt one to complain but i feel this is very unprofessional and needed to be addressed. Dont offer free touch ups if youre going to be an ass about it. Zen Tattoo is a welcome alternative to the swarm of dingy, dirty tattoo shops you'd find all along State street... or the highbrow trendy, hipster shops who specialize solely in American Traditional. Specifically, owner/operator Thai Le. Thai is a master of his craft and undoubtedly the very best in the state at traditional Japanese. His meticulous attention to detail and intimate knowledge of proper Japanese tattoo is evident in his work(he spent a short time studying in Japan so obviously Thai knows his stuff). I fully trust Thai to deliver the cleanest, sharpest work imaginable and am usually willing to give him carte blanche to do whatever he wants to my skin - because the result is always dazzling. In addition to being exceptionally skilled, the guy is incredibly humble and exudes a polite, quiet grace - a true gentleman. He has an uncanny way at really putting you at ease and making an otherwise miserable three hours of pain go by much smoother. The shop itself is always clean. I cannot really speak for the other artists however they always seem to be busy. Zen Tattoo also has an on site piercer. They will accept walk-ins however if you wish to sit with Thai an appointment would most likely be necessary as he's booked out solid. (with good reason) Tattoo parlors are a lot like sushi joints, they seem to be popping up everywhere and some are quite good whereas most others are mediocre or absolutely terrible. As a consumer you are presented with a choice: take the time to research and find a reputable artist who will best translate your vision or tastes into a fine tattoo, or, go with the cheapest artist you can find( here's an example: "my friend's cousin just got out of jail and he's a tattooist... he works for beer!" ) and adorn your body with as much crap as humanly possible in the shortest amount of time. unfortunately, as tattoos become more mainstream, more people go with the second choice. The old adage holds true, you get what you pay for. If it's quality you want, and you appreciate and love Japanese or Asian tattoo, then do yourself a favor and go see Thai. Update: 03/26/13 - Thai recently placed 1st and 2nd place for best Asian Pieces in the International Tattoo convention held on 03/22-24. Called after reading the reviews. Wanted to make an appointment with Tai or James but the rude guy who took my call made it sound like this place had no tune for me. He was outright rude for jack of a better word. He told me Tai is not taking appointment till October and Hanes he did not know. He said I need to come in to make an appointment. Was finally ready to get a tattoo but after dealing with this guy on tue 6/23 I will forget the tattoo or look elsewhere. If you run a buyout work for a business there is a certain way to treat potential customers. I have friends all the time in my line of work ask for a good tattoo artist. I was looking for a tattoo & piercing shop to re-pierce my ears that is closest to me. Zen Tattoo showed up on Yelp radar and the reviews looks great except one person's. Eventually i called them up to make an appointment but they told me I can come in anytime. This was the first time I have ever been to a tattoo and I felt completely out of place but the staff are super friendly! They run out of regular earrings so they upgraded me to to diamond earrings without extra charge. I didn't get a chance to take a close look at their piercing tools. It seems they uses a thin stick with earring at the end. The earrings are lubricated with Vaseline or wax? Less than a sec, the earrings were in. I told them that I had to wear my wedding earrings in few weeks. They suggested me to bring in the earrings. So they will sterilize them and put them on me without charge. Afterward, they will text you the instructions how to take care of your piercing probably. Definitely recommend this place! They truly cares about their customers and their customers' piercing! The staff is always very professional and the shop is immaculate. I recently started a sleeve with Mark L. and my experience with him has been nothing but great. He always makes a point to open the needle that he is planning on using in front of me and has always made it clear that he wants to get the placement of the parts of my sleeve correct before tattooing them. There hasn't been any pressure at all to rush through a session or tattoo anything that i'm not satisfied with. During my last visit, I had the opportunity to watch one of the staff clean up after an appointment and I was really impressed with the level of cleanliness that was the result. The staff member proceeded to disinfect every surface that the tattoo artist may have touched. I was really taken back by the level of perfectionism that I saw. It made me even more excited about my choice of tattoo shop. All the artists that i've met have been really down to earth and overall good people. Update: I did finally receive a message from the artist and he shared every personal thing going on with him. Although I feel bad for him I don't think a client needs to know the personal details in someone's life that they're paying for a service or be impacted by them - at that point I terminated all contact because it just wasn't worth it and I didn't want to know everything he was sharing with me - it was really uncomfortable. I also messaged the business and didn't get a response from the owner until he saw my public review here. I hope the best for them but the reason I was getting the tattoo was to commentate my 20 year wedding anniversary and that was ruined. read more

Zen tattoo is an amazing shop! I went there to get my first tattoo on recommendation from a friend. Me and my steprbotber both got tattoos for his 20th birthday. When we got into the shop we were greeted immediately and talked with Alan. Alan didn't have any openings that day but he did the day right after, so we came in the next day to start our ink adventure. My stepbrother went first and Alan did such a good job! Unfortunately he only had time to do his tattoo and not mine, so we scheduled a new day for me to come back in. We both got tattoos from Alan without doing tons of research into the artist and were very pleasantly surprised! Alan did an AMAZING job on both of our tattoos and we get compliments on them on a daily basis! The shop was clean, relaxing, and fun to be in. Neat art on the walls and jokes between artists make the whole experience fun and easy. After seeing our tattoos my other stepbrother scheduled a day with Alan to get his first tattoo aswell! I've actually never been to Zen Tattoo but I have been tattooed by the owner, Tai(spelling)... and Tai is freaking amazing at what he does. When I had a standing appointment with Tai every 2 weeks or so, we would get right down to work. He's a really nice dude. He doesn't have that douchey hard-ass air about him that a lot of tattoo guys have. Plus he's a total workhorse. No intimidation factor, no frustration factor, Tai gets it done. So the customer service when I first got there was amazing. And I met with the tattoo artist named Jesse who went over the prices and what he does charging $100 an hour which I said was fine and then told me that he draws for free. So I get there on Saturday on my appointment at 12 p.m. so he draws up photos of pictures of what I wanted I said yeah sure that would be fine. Then goes and comes back it's now almost 1:15 p.m. then he starts tattooing at about 1:30 I finished my tattoo at 3 p.m. and just wondering how the hell he charged me $240 for an hour and a half of tattooing with should have been 150 and I had a $75 deposit down so I'm wondering where this extra $90 came from. Plus his work was absolute crap. His shading was terrible as you can see in the photo and also by the eye with the skull you can see that his lines weren't even matched up and he over traced. Second when he kept asking during the tattoo how does it look I had asked him about the shading. And in his response and a quote" just let me tattoo". So with my photo here's for all view to see I'm just wondering where did that $90 come from shaving a quarter of my arm?? Let me preface this: I have a couple of tattoos, two of which I got when I was still living in Idaho. When I moved to Utah, I thought long and hard about what I wanted, which was about 5 years since my previous tattoo's. When I finally made up my precious mind, I was talking to my beloved friend Brittney about getting a new one. Brittney told me about her long time friend Al who works at Zen Tattoo - he had just done two of her tattoos that year. They are truly amazing, so much detail and love put into every line on her skin, with coloring that blends into perfection. I text him a picture of a necklace with the tree of life on it when I was ready. Not even a good picture - poor Al! Much to my surprise when I showed up two or three days later he had drawn out 6 different options. I just knew I loved this soul from that second. We chatted about it for a while, and my intention was to get something small on my wrist. After explaining to me thoroughly what was going to happen when the ink expands (as I grow old), how much detail would be lost, etc. I decided he knew what he was talking about, and let him just do what he does best. We both chatted and he drew up the final piece of art that was going to be embedded into my shoulder. I am in love with what he did - even with just a black and white tattoo, it is truly amazing way beyond anything I could have ever imagined. Hands down the best tattoo I have. I have recommended two friends since - their tattoos are just as creative and intrinsic. His artwork is scattering the walls and he will explain all of them to you while he works away. The shop is clean and comfortable - very tranquil for me. They also do piercings - my friend pierced her septum the same day I received my tattoo. The guy really spent time with her and knew what he was doing, she said because of that her piercing was nearly painless and such a great experience. I went in to Zen without an appointment and with high expectations, I met up with Neal. He instantly put down all he was doing to helped me design a tattoo that was very difficult. After he seen what I wanted he told me to come back in an hour. When I got back I was blown away at what he had drawn up and 4 hours later I was so happy at the start of a multi session tattoo. I recently completed my 1st session w/ Mark at Zen Tattoo. My experience was very positive. I decided to take a look at Zen after various friends recommended them. I checked out their artists, all of which create fantastic pieces. I decided to reach out to Mark, who appeared to have an interest in the type of design I wanted, I contacted him through his personal Instagram page. He was very responsive to my inquiries. After a bit of discussion on the design I put down a deposit for the initial appointment. Upon arriving at the shop, it was very clean, comfortable and inviting. I was promptly greeted by my artist Mark. At this time we reviewed the design he created using various examples I had previously sent. Mark was very willing to make the adjustments I requested and give suggestions based on his experience. Once the design was finalized and I was in the chair, he took time to ensure proper placement. My session was a little over 2.5 hours, during that time, everyone was polite and professional, conversation was easy and comfortable. I was in the front room which offers a bit of privacy and a calm atmosphere. The work station appeared to be clean and non-cluttered. The work itself is fantastic! I am very happy with the design and detail. It is healing very well. I look forward to finishing it up! I went in for three piercings. Courtney was outstanding. Best piercing experience I've ever had and I already have several. She was very friendly and professional and clearly well educated in her profession. And best of all she took the time to really look for the best aesthetic placement based on me and my existing piercings and keeping in mind any potential piercings I may want in future- making her much more an artist than your average piercer which I very much appreciated.
