DEA used to be a strong program with a true family atmosphere. The coaches knew the athletes and…read moretheir families, and there was a sense that the kids genuinely mattered. Unfortunately, that version of DEA no longer exists. Since the sale of Full Out, the program has steadily declined. Routines were criticized as boring, yet nothing was done to improve them, and results reflected that lack of effort and direction. There are also serious concerns about how the gym is being run. Coaches have reportedly gone unpaid for months, and multiple experienced staff members have been let go. Most concerning was the firing of the athletic director just three weeks before Worlds--she was one of the only consistent, reliable coaches who showed up to every practice. Meanwhile, other coaches had outside jobs that prevented them from attending practices regularly. The program itself is shrinking quickly. Last year there were 8 teams (4 prep and 4 elite). This season that number was cut in half, and since the season ended, many athletes have already left. At this rate, it's hard to see how the gym will sustain even one strong elite team moving forward. Athlete management is another issue. There are no real tryouts for positions, and athletes are placed where coaches decide, regardless of readiness or comfort level. On my daughter's team, athletes were made to fly even when they were clearly scared, which raises concerns about both safety and coaching judgment. At this point, DEA feels unstable, disorganized, and in decline. If you're looking for experienced coaching, consistency, and a program focused on athlete development and safety, this is not the place. The only thing it still offers is a sense of familiarity--but even that is fading as more families and staff continue to leave.

Not only do they have full floors of fully decked rooms and work out areas, they also have a rock climbing wall, a pool, a game room, a humongous basketball court and is super clean! We came from another YMCA in King County and were greeted at the front and registered as a guest member of the location. When we worked out, there were tons of machines and we were never waiting around for somebody to finish up their routine which was really nice in comparison to some of the smaller work out areas. My fiancé and I played a half court game of basketball and the space looked like it was really made for a professional game of college basketball. Another perk I thought was really nice was that they had bins of clean towels all over the place which you didn't have to pay the usual $2 for. Overall, it was really fun coming here and seeing the school spirit scattered throughout the different floors. There is tons of Husky art and even though it is super close to the actual school it isn't over populated on the weekends. As with many places, the coach and the group dynamics can make a class great or not so enjoyable. The facility itself is quite large, with gymnasts of various ages and experience levels. It's motivating for the younger kids to see older gymnasts training and to have something to aspire to. I can only speak for the Tiny & Mini Stars areas, which include four main rotation stations: the floor, bars, beams, and of course, the always-popular trampoline. It's a great setup for little ones to burn off energy while learning stretching and basic gymnastics fundamentals. Overall, the staff has always been friendly, though enthusiasm can vary from coach to coach. I do wish the facility was kept a bit cleaner; I've noticed food and trash left around the parent seating area. I also observed that there seem to be only two restrooms available. Despite these small concerns, we enjoy it here and plan to continue coming.

The children's museum is a great place for a kid who wants to learn. My toddler just wants to jump around and be crazy. I actually wanted to go to South Hill Mall for shopping, but my toddler led me to this place because she saw slides and balloons. All you have to do is to sign up for your phone to be registered with the place, which the internet at South Hill Mall sucks for my T-Mobile, so the attendant had to register it for me. Anyway, she advised me the registration would be valid for 3 years from today. It's basically $12 including tax on the weekends per kid, and you can stay there as long as you'd like. It isn't charged hourly. My toddler has a blast at this place. She loves the area with the fan blowing the balloons around and the bouncy/ slide area. Lol ! My husband and I moved from the Bay Area to…read moreSeattle and have been checking out the local bouldering scene in the PNW - Climb Tacoma has been one of our favorite gyms to check out on a day pass since it's near my parents. FACILITIES For bouldering? Wide variety of routes for different levels and technical focus. For example, a lot of bouldering gyms we've been to have their routes go vertical to fit more climbing onto a set of panels. I like that Climb Tacoma has options where a route might go across, so I get to practice different climbing techniques. Some routes exercise grip strength, others may be more core or balance focused. It makes the experience more fun and rewarding when you complete the beta. I've only been climbing actively for a little over 7 months and can climb up to V2 routes; my husband can climb up to V5/V6. Climb Tacoma has been great because we're both able to keep busy with how many routes there are. There's even a small area for kids to practice climbing and a fun spray wall to test different holds. My only complaint with their bouldering is that their labeling system can be very confusing - you need to look at the tape color to indicate difficulty... not the color of the hold. For exercising? It's lacking - a very small fitness / workout area with little equipment compared to other climbing gyms in the area. I would say comparable to small fitness centers you get in hotels. That said... I don't come here for that, I come to boulder. LOCATION + PARKING Location is off S 38th ST so really close to Tacoma Mall or the Vietnamese area of S 38th ST... making it pretty convenient for finding food after a climbing session. In terms of crowds, it's never been a problem coming here on the weekends, the day before a holiday, or in the middle of a weekday (ex/ for their Monday special for "Femmes and Themes". Their parking seems a bit small but it's never been an issue for us as we're always able to find a spot. OVERALL Coming from the Bay Area, I appreciate how chill this climbing gym. It doesn't play loud music, people are respectful when it comes to climbing and there aren't "influencer" or gym bro vibea you get from Silicon Valley / SF gyms. If you are looking for a high end gym with the works like towel service, saunas, yoga classes, etc... then I would suggest looking elsewhere. If you're just looking to boulder in the area, this gym is great for that with extremely fair pricing. Other climbing gyms, pricing is understandably higher because there may rope courses with higher overhead. I like that what I pay here is for bouldering... and there are lots of options to choose from. Make sure to check their site for specials like Half Price First Fridays or the $15 "Femmes and Thems" discount (rentals included)!
