I have been a student of yoga for about 10 years. I've had some outstanding teachers on my path and some not so wonderful ones as well. I found the Zenyasa studio when a facebook friend sent me a link to the Anatomy Studies for Yoga Teacher's Jason teaches. I believe that a strong base of knowledge helps to be more skillful in practice, so I was intrigued. I contacted Jason and set up a private yoga session to explore Zenyasa and talk to him about the Anatomy course. From the moment I walked into the bright, sunfilled studio with it's gleaming hardwood floors and soothing color scheme, I felt at home. I felt peaceful and easy with the opening Gassho practice and it set a tone for everything that followed. The meditation allowed me to become fully present in the moment. The practice is skillfully put together to provide a balanced mental, physical and emotional experience. Jason provided excellent instruction and appropriate adjustments to my alignment. Even better, he was able to share his knowledge and experience from his extensive study of Anatomy to give me real feedback for the WHY's of the adjustments. I was HOOKED on Zenyasa and Jason's unique style. I've continued to study with him and the wonderful group of teachers that are part of the Zenyasa studio's staff. I love the 5 element theme of the class and am getting more familiar with the Meridian systems in my body and how to strengthen the energetic body through asana. Zenyasa studio is a lovely intimate studio where each time my practice feels like a rebirth for me. Thanks to the Zenayasa studio, I am building a very deep and solid foundation for my Yoga practice, including both strengthening and stretching exercises, in a systematically alternated way to ensure a balanced practice over time. I also feel that I am enriching my personal and family daily life thanks to the meditation practice, we have at the beginning of each class, and how we are helped to develop and cultivate in us the mindfulness: Jason does that with art and knowledge. Zenyasa is really special and unique: I like how teachers transmit their knowledge about postures (with an insight into anatomy), the variations and options, depending on your abilities to avoid any injury. I consider as a very nice life gift to have met Jason, and now the studio shanga, as a beginner (maybe advanced beginner now) in Yoga. Everybody in the studio is so considerate and respectful. I started taking classes Zenyasa with Jason Brown when he was at Pure Yoga. After he left to start his own studio, nothing at Pure was the right fit anymore, and I transferred over to his new little studio. It's an intimate & cozy space - the maximum is 15 students. There's no locker room, no sauna, no eucalyptus scented towels - but I prefer it over any other yoga studio because the style of yoga is so marvelous. Classes are about an hour and a half long. We start off class with a bowing practice reminiscent of martial arts and then 15 minutes of meditation practice! Then we warm up our joints, and go into the movement practice. It is one of the only practices I have found that has made me both stronger and more fit, as well as maintaining my flexibility. I really appreciate the meditation at every class. It was hard at first, and now it's probably one of my favorite things - a yoga class without it feels strange. Whenever I leave a class here, I feel centered, strong, relaxed, and happy. read more

Zenyasa is a new approach to yoga. It goes beyond body and mind. We practice recognition, honor and appreciation for our place of practice, each other, the teacher and all there is out there. It follows by 15 minutes of meditation. The Asanas are a work out of strength and stretches developed according to the meridians to activate the flow of energy in the body. Savasana is also a time to contemplate on Zen philosophy. And we end with a beautiful practice of service. Jason is extremely knowledgeable, intuitive and sensitive. His classes are small in size and fun, without competition, but with choices for all levels. His students are friendly and warm and they share a mutual connection of respect. I really appreciate the intimacy of the studio, and the conscious instruction. It's obvious that the instructor/owner Jason knows a lot about the body and how it functions, and this enables him to guide you in practicing yoga in a safe and sustainable manner. I also appreciate the thought and care that was put into the thematic series that he's developed. It provides a really nice framework for the practice. An added bonus is that by starting each session with a nice-sized meditation, Zenyasa recalls for us the original motivation behind all these yoga postures - meditation! I just moved out of NYC, and one of the things I miss most is class at Zenyasa. I miss the friendly, truly supportive community. Unlike at many yoga studios in Manhattan, there is absolutely no sense of competition about who can go deepest into a pose; students actually encourage each other. I miss the small class sizes, which ensure all the individual attention you need. The teachers at Zenyasa are all so knowledgeable and can push you to go further in your practice while still making sure you are comfortable and not about to injure yourself. I went to Zenyasa yesterday for the first time and had a fabulous experience. The class was small, the space is intimate, and the teacher was really great. The class was slow but strong and I really got into my body and breath. I also really liked the emphasis on meditation at the beginning. It's also a stone's throw from the train, an extra plus. Would definitely recommend this studio as a humble and sincere space to practice yoga on the UWS. read more

Amazing class! One of the better yoga classes I've been to in NYC. There is such a nice vibe and total sincerity of the whole place and Frances is and awesome instructor. Love this studio! Lots of individual attention. Teachers are great working with students' injuries. Each class starts with a breathing and meditation practice. Really sets up mindfulness for the whole class. They also have great deals on memberships & class packs. One thing to note is there is no signage outside, so be sure to know the address. read more

This is the best yoga studio I've ever been to. The teachers are very well trained, the atmosphere is warm and friendly. For the most part the classes are very small and there's plenty of room. You get a brief meditation, careful warm up, challenging yoga venyasa and relaxing ending. I love this place, you should check it out! read more

I am a novice. I have tried many different instructors over the past year. No-one comes close to Jason. He is a great person and a great instructor. Being in his class is a tremendous experience that anyone who does yoga should try. read more
