It is a wonderfully open, cheerful, and thoughtful community, both for experienced practitioners and for those coming for the first time. First, it is a good idea to arrive 15-20 minutes early, regardless of which meditation you attend. It is helpful to get a few pointers on where to sit and what to expect. People will be glad to offer suggestions, and there is always someone assigned specifically to help newcomers. Just ask for "the Shoji." Second, if you do not need wheelchair access, the entrance is right up the steps in the front of the building. The front is the side that looks out on the driveway where you drove in. Like Zen itself, the place has many doors. Like Zen itself, this can be a little confusing. If you need a more accessible entrance, the double doors will be on your right. If they are not open, just knock and someone will no doubt let you in. There is also a satellite Zen Center in West Seattle that meets on Monday nights at Fauntleroy UCC. When you first start, it might feel foreign, very different, but don't let that dissuade you; the practice, here, is to be true to the discipline while also learning how to teach & apply it in our culture. I also love that there are so many ways to be involved -- from working in the meditation garden, or working in the food garden (food is donated to the food bank), the Racial Healing group - or sitting in meditation on Zoom (every day there's at least one sit). But the thing I appreciate the most is the feeling I get that everyone is sincere, not judgmental or self-righteous. Really just learning how to practice no-self and, from within, transform greed, hatred and ignorance (the vows we say at every sit).

I can't speak to all that she's learned, but she uses very different methods based on the problem area in combination with the solution. She can easily stretch, cup, knead, circulate, sound, heat, and really push my body all in one session. She addresses body issues in a much more 'whole body, whole mind' manner. She knows what she's doing so can come off a bit direct, but I think that kind of directness is what we Seattlites need every once and a while :) I love our communication, it feels open and honest, and sometimes she enters spiritual territory that I am unfamiliar with, but she gives me the space to digest and absorb anything within--and slightly beyond--my comfort zone. Essentially, she's not a missionary about it.  I was born with a shoulder injury (a palsy) that will always be with me. She listened to my concerns about the injury, and she has pushed that shoulder to do things just beyond its comfort zone. But she has also been a miracle worker with the opposite shoulder. All of the muscles and tendons that don't work on one side have to do twice the work on the other side. She has leveraged strong hands, correct pressure (while always checking in with me), stretching, movement, cupping, digging to help with the tension and pain that has built up over the years. TL;DR: A very skilled bodywork professional who listens to what you're saying, but more importantly listens to what your body is saying. I always leave feeling lighter, straighter, and far less tense. I have never had a masseuse quite like Ila. I hope to be seeing Ila for a very long time.

They have people teaching that pay no attention to individuals, do no correction, and do not offer alternatives. I was injured due to lack of care and instruction and supervision. I am over 65, overweight and very flexible. It would have been worse if I wasn't fairly knowledgeable about what I could safely do. Suffice to say, it's your choice, there are precious few good teachers. Just be vigilant. I didn't write this to complain but to alert potential students/clients to the possibility of danger/injury.
