I recently started coming back to CrossFit now that we're in a better place pandemic-wise. Zephyr is in an even grander space (that the owners pretty much built from scratch), but is still centrally located on Menual near University. There are a lot of thoughtful details in the gym, like private showers and a juice/coffee bar, and of course all the classic Crossfit equipment. Great community gym. Instructors are friendly and helpful always willing to go the extra mile with you. I was looking for something close to work and the freeway and found Zephyr. I was way out of shape, overweight, and not getting any younger. I've been a member of a gym off and on for the last 30-40 years but this is the first gym that has made me feel like I want to come back on a routine basis. Looked this place up on my coast to coast road trip for a drop-in class. That day was a 1 rep-max front squat followed by a benchmark Kelly wod: 5 rounds of 400m run, 30 box jumps and 30 wall ball shots. I got absolutely crushed by it. Dead last in the finish. I didn't know it at the time, but I was working out at an altitude of 5400ft. Perhaps that's why I couldn't breath past the 4th round of wall balls. This particular gym focuses on natural fitness movements and wellness experiences. There are a lot of guys running around without shoes on, which I thought was crazy at first because the location is literally next to an auto repair shed. Some of the folks follow the minimalist concept, which encompasses barefoot running among other things. I thought it was great they focused on personal wellness rather than the competitive aspects of Crossfit. A different spin on things is always good. The owners were really hospitable and all the trainers I were introduced to are Alberquerque locals. After the wod they had a taco fiesta complete with margaritas and beer. Probably the best experience I've had in any drop-in location. If I was staying in the local area, this would be my box. read more

Went to the 5:30 class on Tuesday December 18th. Kevin did a good job of explaining things and was very patient with me and I appreciate that as this was my first time at this gym. Love this gym! I was nervous about joining CrossFit as I know the reputation that CrossFitters are so strong and in much better shape than I am. However, from the first moment I was there, They are so welcoming to people of any age and fitness level! MILITARY STATIONED HERE OR TDY, this is the place to go for all your CrossFit and Olympic weightlifting needs! They have your standard CrossFit classes in the morning and during the evenings as well as Olympic lifting and power lifting classes on Tuesday/Thursday evening. Also, my favorite part, they have open gym from 0800-1630. Military here for training or anyone who works odd hours will benefit tremendously from this schedule! I have been here TDY for 3 months and I instantly became family with the owners and coaches! Makes me wish this was a permanent change of station for me. Programming is on point! In 3 months, I have hit some PR's that I I've been chasing for years! 4 days of the week has a strength programmed before the WOD. Not many boxes do that. If you become a member here, you will not be disappointed! They also do free friend Friday's which conclude with a party afterwords of good food and even better beers! read more

First, I want to say, Zephyr rocks! My first exposure to Crossfit was a TV segment where I watched an average sized woman hold what looked like a hundred+ pounds over her head, squat, and come back up. I thought, "Wow, I've got to learn to do that!" It turns out that the weight plates used in Crossfit are different than the ones at my gym, so it wasn't as heavy as it looked, but now that I've done that maneuver, I'm still impressed. I turn 60 this year, but I've been active my entire life. I thought I was in good shape (I was so wrong) and Crossfit might make a good once or twice a week supplement to mountain running and trips to my local gym. I started slow, using one of their punch cards of 10, and went twice a week. My goal was to adapt to the new demands without hurting myself. After two weeks, I wanted more, so I went three times a week. Two weeks later, four times a week. Two more weeks and I'm at five times a week. Crossfit has supplanted ALL my other workouts. I've done martial arts, yoga, cycling, and weight work with a trainer. Nothing has been as effective as Crossfit.The workouts vary every day, so I'm never bored. I get up in the morning and eagerly check the workout on-line while I eat breakfast, looking at YouTube videos to prepare for anything I haven't done before. I leave for class at 6:40 am for the 7:00 class, and swing through the door with a smile on my face. Don't get me wrong, Crossfit is hard, grueling work, but it's interesting and fun, too. The Zephyr Box is a great place to train. The staff are super knowledgeable and they help me scale things I can't do so that I get maximum benefit from each workout. Every time I encounter a limitation, whether of strength or flexibility, they are there to help me find a safe work around. The box members are a friendly and supportive bunch, and there's no nasty competition. It's a nice mix of men and women, and a large range of ages and capabilities. The scale says I haven't lost any weight (I tend to carry ten extra like a lot of people), but I can tell I've lost inches in the waist and gained them in the chest and shoulders. None of that is important: I feel better, stronger, and more energetic. I'm proud to call myself a Crossfit junky. read more
