Yelp Review 2026 #48: Housed in an old armory, Zeughauskeller is a popular restaurant for mostly tourists. It does get pretty busy so, reserving a table would be the smart thing to do. Unless, you walk in during odd hours. Swiss food is not popular for being tasty and having bold flavors. Unless you intend to just eat cheese and chocolate, Swiss food is rather forgettable. Highly influenced by German cuisine, expect things like wienerschnitzel, bratwurst, pork shank, etc. Sausage with Potato Saiad: All their sausage is served with potato salad but you can sub it out with French fries or rosti. The sausage was nice. The potato salad was surprisingly good. 4/5 Cordon Bleu: You get a choice between veal and pork. I chose pork. The description on their menu says "tender pork escalope, filled with ham and SPICY Gruyère cheese, fried crispy". There was no spice at all. LOL. The ham was probably 2 thin slices. There are other Swiss restaurants in Zurich that makes better cordon Bleu. 3/5 The service was quite slow. We waited for our server to come over. They sent the only English-speaking server to handle like 7 tables. It's definitely a one and done. Come here for the vibes, not for the food.
We wanted to try an authentic Swiss restaurant and came upon this place. This place has been around since the 1480s! I'm not sure how much of the interior is the same but it was very cool inside. Our waiter was really nice. I ordered the "Zwingli Sausage". I don't eat much meat but this was really good. My friends got the sausage sampler & this dish that was like Mac & Cheese with a gravy/onion sauce on top. My friends ordered beer and I ordered an apple cider, which was good. They both loved it. I definitely recommend this place for authentic Swiss food!
Happy to have Zeughayskeller as my last meal in Switzerland! I of course had to go with one of their deliciois sausage dishes served with Rosti It did not disappoint! The popular Wiedikerli dish was pan fried sausage with lean pork, served with savory gravy with a side of Rosti. This was a 10/10 last meal that made my last night. The dessert was mostly okay, basic but I won't discount the main course and the delicious local swiss beer on tap! Looking forward to coming back one day!
Large place good service, good food and lots of energy. Kind of loud and you may be out at a table with other people.
We had such a fun evening here. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with beautiful timber beams and the authentic charm of a traditional Swiss-German restaurant. Our group had arranged a set menu in advance, and the rack of lamb was outstanding--easily one of the best I've ever had. The service was friendly, attentive, and exceptionally accommodating of the dietary needs within our group. A wonderful dining experience that combined great food, genuine hospitality, and a memorable Swiss ambiance.
Built in 1487, Zeughauskeller is a former arsenal turned traditional Swiss restaurant. It sits just off Bahnhofstrasse and is a popular stop, so it's always pretty busy - highly recommend making a reservation online in advance. Generally expect a shared table. Service was friendly and happy to make recommendations - the potato salad was as perfectly mustardy as the wiener schnitzel was crispy. Plenty of beers to try as well. Enjoy the ambiance of the old building alongside the authentic Swiss food!
This place is definitely a tourist attraction, so it's always busy. We were offered a shared table, which we accepted, and the ambiance was beautiful and full of history -- apparently, the building used to be an old arsenal! They have an English menu, and the service was fast, though not very friendly. I ordered a salad and pork shank and asked the waiter if it was crispy on the outside like a traditional Schweinshaxe. He said yes, but unfortunately, it wasn't -- which was disappointing. Also, our main dishes arrived before the salads, and the waiter didn't seem to care. Overall, it was a decent experience, and the atmosphere alone makes it worth visiting once. But I think the constant crowd has negatively affected the quality. I'll probably try another place next time.
This place was a chat gpt find cause I wanted the traditional veal with mushroom cream sauce and rosti. It's a huge place. I was seared at a communal table because my friend and I wanted to do different things in the afternoon. The service was great and it was fun to be at the communal table. I ordered the veal and it was absolutely wonderful! They even give you a small pan with the remainder that you can continue to eat. If you're looking for that traditional food from Zurich, this is a great place!
Zeughauskeller - Zürich Old Artillery Building of Zürich, turned Peaceful Gathering, since 1926. Here, it's not just a dining experience... It's so much more! Zeughauskeller - Old Artillery storage building converted into a place for peaceful gatherings to enjoy great Swiss cuisine and each other's company. I spent some time looking at their delicious dishes and settled on, "Ütliberger Siedwurst" - CHF 29.00 (Served with Mac and Cheese Swiss style and homemade apple slices with cinnamon). It was hot, fresh and delicious. The atmosphere was so welcoming and full of historical archives, including, Live Artillery Grenades. They do ask you, "No smoking in this area please. Live Artillery grenades stored here." They offer plenty of seating and everywhere around you, you can learn about Swiss war(s) history. It was quite a unique dining experience that I haven't experienced previously. After my meal, I spent some time walking around and studying different artillery archives. The staff were great, too. Very attentive to make sure with language barrier, you knew what dish you were interested in. My waitress kept stopping by my table and asking me if I needed anything else and what I think of the dish. The overall experience was great and I would highly recommend it and look forward dining here again.
visited this restaurant three times during my stay, both for lunch and dinner and everything I tried was fantastic! - Pumpkin Soup: One of the best I've ever had , light, interesting, and full of flavor. - Chicken Schnitzel with Mushroom Sauce: Perfectly thin and crispy on the outside, juicy inside. The sauce was creamy with a hint of lemon, absolutely delicious! - Rösti: Good but a bit dry for my liking. - Macaroni from their vegetarian options: Made with cheese, potatoes, and caramelized onions. light, comforting, and so good! The atmosphere is super charming, full of character and history. If you're in a small group, you'll likely share a table with others, which actually makes it more fun! We ended up having great conversations with our table neighbors :) The service is a little slow as they are ALWAYS super busy! Can't wait to come back!
Easily the most famous Swiss Beer Hall in Zürich. Very similar to the traditional beer hall in Germany in that there are shared tables, traditional comfort food, quick service, and lots of great beer. We made reservations for our 7:30 dinner which I would recommend because the line for walk-ins was very long when we arrived. Inside is very large, it can host many different sized groups, you can easily find a group of a dozen or more at a table, but we were just a party of two and were sat at a table for 4 with another couple so there is a bit of awkwardness there, but it is nice to sit near other travelers. That is if they are in a talking mood or speak the same language. Our waiter was extremely polite and very helpful with the selections and pricing is also very fair. To drink we had the house lager and it was very good. For our meal, we chose the Sausage Combo Plate and the Wienerschnitzel and honestly both were great. The Wienerschnitzel was especially tender and very large and I was able to eat every bite of it because it was that good. The sausages were also very crisp and tasty and we honestly really enjoyed our meal. It is true that this place is very touristy, but it is also very authentic, traditional Swiss food, but reminds me of Germany most of all and is very similar to the beer halls that we visited in Munich. I would definitely recommend to any traveler to try this place at least once while in town.
I went here for my first meal in Zurich. The building was very cool and it was on my walking path tour. It felt touristy so it probably was but that's okay! I got a sausage and the potato salad... which I would describe as a bbq hotdog. The service was quick and I was back on my way. It fueled me for a 20000 step day! You will share a table with our guest, I thought it would be weird but it was fine!
Mediocre at best. The food was very disappointing and the service was scattered at best. Two of the three stars are for the ambiance. You can find better in central Zurich.

I first came here in 2007, and I am so glad it still remains. An amazing restaurant in a beautiful location. We had to vacate our table by 1830, and I was a little concerned due to slower service - not to worry - we ate and still were out before the reservation for the table arrived. And the food!!!! Even after all this time, it is still utterly delicious. I had the Swiss veal with mushrooms and rosti, and my husband had the sausage. We started with butter lettuce salads, and those are a bit expensive at 8 CHF for lettuce and salad dressing. The mains were priced competitively. Plenty of beer and wine to choose from, as well. The meal was superb, and I look forward to visiting again when it is not a busy Saturday night. read more

Authentic as hell! Delicious. Oh, the interior, wherever you look. Stenciled wood beamed high ceilings, arched windows, decorative framing, wrought iron, dark wood, weaponry old, armor, art, & for some reason a row of modern motorcycle helmets. I highly recommend the traditional veal schnitzel. Ive tried it in three restaurants, and learned the portions are ridiculously large, breading is crispy, and to my taste- could really use a sauce. Good luck with that. Marinara, nope, tomato sauce, nope, red sauce, nope. In exasperation, the waiter brought me catsup. I was finally successful at last restaurant by asking for pizza sauce. (Marinara) This place is continuously busy, service is rapid, they don't push you to leave. Soak it all in. Don't forget a stein o beer. Only thing missing is oompah music read more
Wonderful service and family friendly atmosphere! i will come back here. it is nice and cozy and lots of space. the waiters are kind and helpful the food is good! lots of glizzy bratwurst for all you folks! i got some potato cake thing and also cream chicken and mushrooms. this place is a real gem it's pretty good but for zurich standards make sure to have reservations for dinner! i went for lunch and it was not packed. thsi was the only place that asked for a tip A+ read more

Cute quaint place in Zurich. Menu was limited during lunch only having a handful of items. We ordered the meat and cheese platter to share. Just a simple platter nothing out of the ordinary. read more
Restaurant has been around longer since American was a country. Not a tourist trap since food deliveries. Came here without a reservation on a Thursday evening at 530, seated right away. Excellent food - I ordered the grilled variety sausage with potato salad and sauerkraut and my husband ordered the Wienerschnitzel with hash browns. We both ordered a large draft beer but wish we ordered the beer flambé once we say other table order it! Sizeable portions, took some to go to feed to swans on the lake. Best place to eat and must try!! Didn't know how famous this restaurant was until we got there. Searched for the best Switzerland restaurant near me then this place popped up so we went. Omg! This site originally operated as an armory built in 1487. Very big inside and recommend to make a reservation if 4 or more people. We are going back tonight again since we are leaving Zürich tomorrow. read more

After a long flight, we decided to dive right into the local cuisine! We read that Zeughauskeller was authentic and very popular amongst locals and tourists! The inside of the restaurant has lots of wartime relics. The old masonry reminded me of a medieval dungeon. Despite that, the atmosphere is very cozy and lively! The service is great. Although it was popular during the lunch hour and we didn't have reservations, the host was kind enough to seat us anyway! The smoked pork sausage was my favorite! The spice mixture was definitely something unique! It was a chilly day so I ordered some soup. The beef broth in the onion soup was AMAZING! I don't think I've ever had a more flavorful onion soup! read more

A fabulous recommendation by a local. It's a very popular place for both tourists and locals. If you are a small group like we were (party of 2), expect to share a table with others. Lively, fun, traditional atmosphere. A menu full of traditional Swiss meals, ya pretty much can't go wrong. As far as dining in Zurich, this place was top of our list! read more

My family went here for our final meal in Switzerland. We had a short wait for the table. The building used to be an armory until 1926 and so there are some neat artifacts. I had the sausage in a skewer which incomes different sausages. Be sure to try the onion sauce. My wife had the macaroni. The service was excellent. read more
So we had just arrived in Zurich after a red-eye flight and had spent most of the day taking cat naps and drinking some vino to get into the European Thanksgiving mindset. After walking around Bahnhofstrasse to see all the luxury shopping, we decided to check into this joint located right behind the Hermes with no knowledge of it. We stepped in and were greeted warmly by the folks. The set up is basically a beer hall and they have a great selection of beers and of course swiss/german style food. The ambiance is great and the service fast and efficient. After a quick peruse, we decided to order the sausage specialties on a skewer (Zeughauskeller Wurstpiess) and the Weinerschnitzel and tried a few of their house beers. The beers were delicious and cold so perfect way to kick off a Europe trip. The food came out pretty fast and the Schnitzel was good texture and breaded great. The fries were obviously good but was really hankering for a potato salad that would accompany it. All good though as it was definitely a solid schnitzel. The sausage plate was good also. Definitely a good way to try many samples but I wish I had just ordered a proper wurst. This was a great starting meal for sure and a great spot to hit up food as well. Glad we tried this spot. Seemed a little touristy, but overall we had a solid experience. The restaurant is actually a historic armory, which they pay homage to with the interior decor. You can tell by looking at the building structure that it is a relic which was neat. We came here for lunch on a Thursday, and surprisingly to us the place was very busy. We didn't have a reservation but we were able to get seated (at a shared table where others were already eating) as long as we promised to be finished by 1pm when a reservation was coming (it was 11:45am so we agreed). I ordered a traditional style sausage dish, which came with potato salad. Everything was good, but just be aware mustard is a big ingredient in the potato salad and they serve multiple kinds of mustard with the sausage as well. If you don't like sausage, might not want to order a sausage here. Our table-mates were very friendly and also tourists, so it was an overall pleasant experience. I think next time I would probably skip this place though - food wasn't overly amazing and there are probably better, more authentic places. read more
The food here is traditional German Swiss. I had the veal medallions in a creamy brown wine sauce with mushrooms. It comes with the potato rosti, which is like hash browns. It was excellent. My wife had the pork cordon bleu, noodles, and the creamy seasonal soup, which was asparagus. Also an excellent dish. The house beet was fantastic. Be sure to get it! The restaurant building is from the 1400's, so Christopher Columbus could have eaten here before discovering McDonalds in the United States. We sat at a table for six, and they also seated another couple at the other end of the table. They were on their honeymoon and were fun to talk with. Service was fine, except that we were charged for an additional item we did not order or get. That always makes me suspicious. The total with the mystery item removed was over $100 USD. BY American standards, it was expensive, but perhaps not by Swiss standards. read more
Order the meat for two as shown here and you will have one of the best meals of your visit to Zurich. Sorry, I don't know the name of this meal, since I don't speak Swiss-German so I posted a picture to reference. Ask for the meat that is served on a sword. It was 88 franks for the meat and side but so worth it. read more

What a delight! This restaurant had old school German / Swiss pub vibes, and you could really feel the history! We sat across from William Tell's bow and arrow, which were hanging on the wall. The food was delicious. Heavy, rich German food like schnitzel and pork knuckles, with several varieties of sausage and sides of potatoes in the form of potato salad and what felt like hash browns. My favorite thing on the menu was the onion sauce, CHF5, which was a dark, rich, caramelized onion sauce that we liberally poured over our sausages. Such a treat, looking forward to coming back next time! We weren't able to get a reservation, but they do a good job of keeping a number of tables empty for walk-ins on 8pm on a Wednesday night, so we didn't have to wait for a table. read more

So this is definitely a destination for visitors, though it seems there were some Swiss people in addition to foreign tourists. Probably because the menu is like a tour of famous Swiss dish but without the fondue or the raclette. Very delicious and huge portions! Kalbsgeschnetzeltes nach Zürcher Art mit Rösti: While everyone knows fondue when they think of Switzerland, turns out this is another must try. It's a bit like beef stroganoff in that it's beef in a creamy mushroom sauce. Yet so much better because they use thin slices of tender veal that get seared quickly for optimal tastiness. While beef stroganoff tends to use tougher and thicker cuts from a full grown cow. Pairs excellently with rösti, that huge round of thinly shredded potatoes that crisped up nicely all around. And a very large portion with only half served on your plate initially and the rest left in a metal bowl warming over a candle. Seriously, don't leave Zurich without trying this. Bürgermeister Schwert: Perfect for the photo opportunity. A legitimate huge sword with thin and tender veal wrapped all around. Grilled up nicely like a kabab, but so much better than that minced meat stuff. Priced and portioned for 2 people, so you need someone else to go along with on this. Served with two sauces that kinda taste like they go with sausages, one brown sauce and the other like a creamy curry. While it was experience, I think the kalbsgeschnetzeltes is more a flavorful dish. Zeughauskeller Vacherin-Glacé: If you have room for dessert, you should definitely try this one since it's very unique. Two large meringue discs, kinda the texture you'd find in a macaron. But in-between is a huge amount of creamy vanilla cream. And on top, delicious raspberries and whipped cream. It's a bit like the Swiss took the Pavlova and added a bunch of yummy dairy to it. Despite being so huge and tasty, not overwhelmingly filling. read more
Set in an old armory, Zeughauskeller was the first restaurant we chose on our recent trip to Zürich. When we arrived there was a short line and we were told it would be a 15-20 minute wait for us as two people. We were offered to share a table with another party of two, which was fine with us and it got us seated a little quicker. Our server, Andy, was AMAZING. He gave us such good recommendations on food and beer and checked in regularly, without feeling rushed. We ordered the traditional Kalbsgeschnetzeltes nach Zürcher Art (veal and mushrooms in a delicious creamy white-wine sauce, accompanied by potatoes), which was super flavorful (would absolutely order it again) and the Augustiner "Schüblig," which was some of the best sausage I've ever had. We also ordered the Zeughauskeller, which is their beer brewed in house. It was crisp and delicious. Highly recommend and we'll be back! read more
July 25/2022: This place was SO good we went twice in a row! The food was outrageously delicious! The schnitzel, the sausage, the potato's. Mine for the first nite was weisswurst & potato salad. SO DELICIOUS. The second nite was the Veal Schnitzel w Rosti. Both of these meals were just simple beyond delicious. If you're in Zurich...you MUST eat here. Full STOP! read more
Great restaurant, very busy, we got accommodated without a reservation. We are family of 4, we were all thinking of getting sausages, we decided to go with the 3feet sausage for $100+... it came with potato salad and we upgraded to the rosti for extra $7. It did not disappoint! We were satisfied. The resto looks intimidating but tye inside has a welcoming vibe, lots of tourists. read more
The ambiance was amazing. Mixture of restaurant and museum. The food and service left us wanting. Over salted hash brown potatoes dominated my taste buds leaving a dull pork cordon blu. Our waitress went on a break or quit all together. No refill of beer or any service until the check which was offered by another waitress for our table as well as other tables around us. Super fun! Was only in Zurich for a night and was told this was the place to go. The food was absolutely delicious and we had a great time. We sat outside which wasn't a problem, but I would recommend to others to sit inside. The food was also verrrry pricey but still a wonderful experience with great service. read more
This is the place to be in Zurich. They are hustling and bustling here, hence the 2hour dining limit. I don't think you can go wrong with any dish but we loved our choices: liver and shank. Great flavor and good portion. read more
This restaurant location was originally used to be an arsenal, but it was later turned into a restaurant, specializing in German/Zurich (you can argue either way) food, famous for its beer, pork knuckle, one has to book before coming to here and there was a long line outside the door even today's rainy day. I ordered a signature roast pork knuckle with a house beer: whole pork shank "get it while you can" marinated with fresh herbs and oven-roasted, simmered in dark draught beer and served with fresh potato salad. The pork knuckle had been marinated in advance, so it was tasty and the meat was juicy, but I was little bit disappointed that I expected pork knuckle with skin, the beer was okay but not as good as Belgian beer. read more

The most overrated restaurant by far in Switzerland. Granted the vast majority of food places are overrated, but this tourist attraction (trap) was exceptionally overrated. The food was by far the most bland food I have had in my whole life with a ridiculous price tag to match. I'm talking no salt, no pepper, no anything...basically please do yourself a favor and skip this place. My friend who I was visiting in Switzerland had already forewarned me that the food here sucks yet I still went- don't be like me lol. read more
