I am writing this as a fair warning to people to not use AJ Iron Works for their iron work and/or…read moresteel deck. The following is an account of my experience in working with them from July to Dec 2022 to construct a 10x17 foot steel deck with railings in my Brooklyn backyard. Their overall work during this project was completely unacceptable. And since project completion, they have continued to refuse to rectify the issues that occurred less than 4 months after finishing the job. I will attach pictures through Yelp. 1. Deck deformities: There are 2 deformities that they neglected to mention to me at the time of installation, one is a warping of the I-beam structure, and the other is a bent piece of steel where the staircase is cemented into the ground. 2. Bluestone and Fence damage: As they were installing the deck and painting it, they never properly covered the bluestone that was just installed and dropped black paint on the newly laid bluestone patio and fence. They tried to remove the paint with some abrasive material/products and ruined $7,300 worth of bluestone that had to be replaced. They also left black paint on the newly installed fence. They tried to blame the contractor's men for the damage, but the contractor's men had not been at the work site for at least a week. 3. Timeline delays: They were severely behind on timelines around the NYC permitting process as well as securing the necessary documents to obtain permits. There were lapses in between when the work was being done that were not forecasted or explained to me that put the project behind ~3 weeks. 4. Communication issues: Throughout the job, communication had been both non-existent and inconsistent. Some days I had no idea the guys were coming over. And other days when they said they were going to come over they didn't...and then would possibly show up the next day. There were some 'front office' illnesses that could have explained the lack of communication; however, a proper business would have a back-up person communicating to all customers. 5. Rust damage: They claim that the deck railings were properly primed and painted, however the amount of rust damage observed (starting Feb 2023), would suggest otherwise. In fact, I have spoken to 2 other iron works companies who both doubt that the railings were primed and painted correctly. Sandy at AJ will say that he offered to touch up spots that we noticed in Dec 2022, but I would not allow him to do so after he ruined the stone and fence (see above). The amount of rust that now exists has gone way beyond needing touch up's to be done, especially since nothing was likely primed properly to being with. I have since worked with another company to fix the rust issue because AJ has continued to refuse to review the damage and remedy the situation. I had to pay for this all out of my own pocket, which was a very expensive job. When I provided this quote to Sandy at AJ and asked for reimbursement, he initially did not return my communication. I gave AJ one last chance to rectify the situation and make good on all the damage, time, aggravation, and out of pocket costs that this ordeal has caused me by sending this note to him in hopes that he would do the right thing. To anyone looking to work with a company for your iron and/or deck needs, I would absolutely not work with AJ iron works in any capacity if you wanted a quality outcome on your project.

Having been burned by a large Westchester Contracting Company 12 years ago we knew how we had been screwed and we were determined to educate ourselves and know what we needed. AJ Iron Works is a small iron work company and we were very hands on with them and they with us. AJ Iron Works did a great job and we are happy with our new deck and ramp.. We did not have a bad experience like the other reviewer. AJ gave us a very fare price, guaranteed their work, answered all our phone calls, came to the building several times before we hired them to make sure they knew what we needed to have done, which the previous contractor failed to do. Sandy was very patient and let us visit their metal shop to see their work and to reassure us we would not have the problems we had in the past. Our job was outside and subject to rain delays, subway problems for his workers. Despite all of that the job finish on time. We appreciated getting Sandy's 7AM calls letting us know if they weren't going to be able to work due to unforeseen problems. It was a really big job on a major NYC street surrounded with restaurants, so we made a judgment call to hire a retired contractor friend to oversee the work and direct foot traffic in and around our building. I'm glad we did because we never had any complaints from our neighbors and this allowed Sandy's workers to just focus on the metal work. Sandy was a man of his word. He said it would take 3 weeks and he was communicative throughout the job. Both Sandy & his head guy Bobby are very knowledgeable, they know their stuff! The deck and handicap ramp was pitched perfect so there is no pooling after a rain. We finally had the right supports and are confident about the work that was done. In fact, when we are outside sweeping people stop us to tell us what a beautiful job it is!

Oh well he said if I don't want to pay for an estimate he could come the next time I was available on Wednesday. When I explained all of the no shows and asked to confirm that he would come, he said "Forget it; I won't come." Don't waste your time

I called Jacob's back and was routed to a garage repair who said they saw I called and the "ticket" was empty. They would reach the technician and have them come out the same day. It is Saturday, almost noon, no technician and still no phone call. I wasted my Friday waiting around for someone that was never going to show up. Don't waste yours. Find someone else.

They pointed out one other issue that may need repair in the next year (a failing hinge), but said that it was fine for now, did not put pressure on fixing - just said to call when ready to get it repaired. Recent but long overdue masonry work now required new wrought iron railings and it was mind…read moreboggling with the sheer number of wrought iron contractors locate in the NYC area. Sure, many of the newer style railings were gaudy stainless steel tubular varieties but we wanted a traditional black wrought iron railing to compliment both the newly tiled outside porch and masonry stairs. Usual headaches encountered running from real pushy contractors exacerbated by prices running from absurdly cheap to real cost prohibitive quotes. Wife ultimately got a half dozen quotes along with vendors who had impeccable reviews. We selected Mack Iron Works and German who not only provided a very decent price quote but a overview of a typical installation and how they would go about the installation process. What was reassuring to us was the fact German was not only extremely patient in answering all our concerns but made options for a trouble-free install. Yelp reviews posted from earlier customers gave us confidence Mack Iron Works was not only in business for quite some time but had a reliable record of very satisfied customers. Installation was completed in less than 3 weeks after contract signing. The arc welds were perfect .... continuous bead of weld and perfectly grinded to match adjoining sections. Hydraulic cement used for those posts where it was more advantageous over lag bolts and anchors. Very detail oriented crew of workers who not only touched up the factory painted rails with additional coats of oil based enamel but caulking at each base to insure longevity. German was onsite throughout the install. Wife extremely happy with her new wrought iron railing and the appearance of these new railing are simply amazing ...fit, finish, and cleanup after the install were all top notch. Could we have gotten the work cheaper? ..... Sure, but there's reasons why cheapest is not always the best decision! You must feel comfortable both materials and work are completed properly. My suggestion is to complete your due diligence and be prepared to be amazed at the current offerings of material sizes and styles. Don't be hesitant about alternative installation methods versus the traditional "drill a hole, insert the railing then fill with hydraulic cement". German and Mack Iron Works Rock! FYI, we refrained from selecting stainless steel even though it was considered maintenance free. The look is not only gaudy and a basic traditional design was non-existent. Materials used were "all" hollow-tube designs hence lag bolts and anchors were the only choice to secure. Wrought iron though NOT maintenance free requires repainting every few years but I find painting very therapeutic especially during Fall and Spring. I cannot speak for others but a nicely painted wrought iron fence or railing is way more attractive than chrome or stainless steel. YMMV!
