I know a lot of you here live quite far from Marine Park/Sheepshead Bay/Gravesend, but if you want used records, Zig Zag is the place to go. Luckily for me, I live in the neighborhood west of here. I've always ignored this spot for years due to the insanely outdated and weathered posters (really horrible ones, too). However, I manned up and walked in about a year and a half ago and I must say: this place is great. It turns out that Zig Zag is quite historic. Back in the early 80s, heavy metal had its glory days here in Brooklyn. L'Amour's was the place to be and Zig Zag was the place to get records... and meet your favorite bands. It's hard to believe that bands like Metallica, Motorhead, and Venom all stepped through that door at one point. Stan, the guy who works there, has basically seen it all and has not given up his 80s days just yet. As for the actual selection of goods: it's just like any other used record store. You win some, and you lose some. Because this place has diminished into obscurity over the last 20 years, all of the super rare stuff is left untouched and hidden underneath everything else. The prices are a bit high ($12 average for a used record?) though the price is worth it for some records. How Stan manages to keep this place in business after all these years blows my mind. I know he does a lot of EBay-ing, but damn! He must kick ass at it. All in all, this place is filled with unexplored treasures and is definitely worth your time especially if you are a collector of classic rock, classic heavy metal, and everything else related to that from the 60s-80s. Another one bites the dust. I used to shop here during my teen years. I'm quite sure it had an awesome Metal collection. However, I used to buy Post-Punk and 80s Goth vinyl here. Let me first state that when I lived in the area, this was my favorite place to shop in the neighborhood. It had all the music I was interested in and at the time seemed like a good deal. I would come in almost every weekend and buy a cd. You could say me and my friend kept this store in business and paid the rent check. However, I will say the man who owned the store had his good days....but mostly bad days. Here is the story about Sir Mullet Zig Zag and why he lost his best customers. One day my friend and I went into Zig Zag thinking it would be another day of buying great cds. I especially would buy so much from this store but today did not find much. I looked and looked but could not find anything. My friend and I decided to look in the 99 cents section just to see if there was anything good...there was not. However, we saw a Ricky Martin cd and some other cd (I want to say the band was called Gordon) that we thought would be hilarious to buy because of the utter cheapness and ridiculousness of buying them, especially the Ricky Martin cd. We went to the counter to pay separately. My friend paid first and paid with a higher bill and was given a lot of change back. I too paid with a higher bill than was needed. I gave him my money and he asked me if I had a nickel. I told him I did not. When this happened he became annoyed and with a mean voice said "WELL I JUST GAVE YOUR FRIEND A BUNCH OF CHANGE". Completely shocked he would growl at us for something so stupid and especially since we were loyal customers; we vowed never to go back to Zig Zag again. Let me tell you we never did step into that store until years later just to see the store again. The only reason why we visited the store was because I had moved out of the neighborhood for college and thought it would be interesting to see what it looked like after a few years of never going in. Nothing had changed; my friends and I were as usual were the only ones in the store. Sir Mullet did not seem to care or express interest that we were there much like in the past (I didn't buy anything either). So that is my story. You might be wondering why I would give it 4 stars but the truth is this record store was a big deal to me and my friends during high school. We enjoyed coming here on the weekends and will always have good memories of this store no matter how it ended. I was about 8 years old when I became a rock fanatic. I had spotted the place a few times, but when I finally walked in...damn. Beatles, Zeppelin, Who, The Dead...it was heaven. Still love the place.
