Jitrada Thai Restaurant - Musaman and Thai Green curries

I revisited Jitrada after nearly a year and a half for dinner with an old friend and in short,…read morenothing much seems to have changed. It was practically empty in there on a Thursday evening. We ordered some Thai prawn crackers with chilli dip which were very good, followed by the 'Jitrada starter platter' (£7.90 pp) which included crispy king prawn wraps, skewers of grilled chicken with peanut sauce, baked chicken breasts in pandan leaf, tempura vegetables, fried minced pork balls with garlic sauce and Thai papaya salad. Overall I'd say the platter was average, just ok, having now had a few Thai meals elsewhere in Manchester I can compare. For our main courses we shared a chicken Musaman curry (with potato, tomato and coconut milk) and a chicken Thai green curry (with coconut milk, aubergine and sweet basil) - £9.50 each. They came with a sizeable portion of sticky rice which was really tasty when the sauces from the curries were added. As the only Thai restaurant in Sale it's decent enough - the staff were very welcoming and service was efficient throughout our meal. It could probably do with a spot of modernisation, but if they removed the footbridge and Koi carp pond at the entrance it would be a real shame! Tip: If preferred, they offer a number of banquets (minimum order for two people).

When I walked in I was first a little surprised by the small bridge and Koi pond just inside the door. Yes they have Koi in a pond, inside the restaurant. The resturant is a reasonably size and at 7:30pm on a Tuesday had a surprisingly decent crowd, probably between 1/4 and 1/3 of their tables had diners. The smell of good Thai food is amazing and that was the second thing that hit me, the smell of sizzling spices and wafts of steam springing up from tables around the restaurant. It appears the sizzling plate is a little feature they offer on a lot of their dishes and it certainly adds to the experience to have those chilli smells assault you, I love it but some people may find it overwhelming. We ordered mixed appetizer selection or curried samosas, fried tofu, spring rolls and corn fritters, all very tasting with sweet chilli dipping sauce. I also ordered the Weeping Green Tiger, which is a fillet steak and vegetables served on the hot plate with a Thai Green Chilli sauce. The fillet steak was perfectly cooked, very tender and juicy. The veg was a little underwhelming and felt like it may have been steamed a little while earlier and kept warm, rather than being cooked to order, it missed some intangible freshness I couldn't put my finger but was quite okay nonetheless, I couldn't fault the green curry sauce, it had all the right mix of hot, salty, sweet and sour which indicates a good Thai dish, perhaps my only wish was that I had more of the sauce, because of the shallow sizzling plate there was only a fairly light basting and I kind of wish I'd had a bowl of extra sauce to pour over the meat and veg as I ate it. My wife had the Seafood Red Curry, which I didn't really try as I'm not a huge fan of seafood, though I did take a prawn and it also seemed very good. She had more curry as her meal came in a bowl. A very enjoyable Thai meal which was only really let down by some small details.

Mmmmm the review I never thought I'd write. This is my secret (top secret - this review will self…read moredestruct in 5 seconds) favourite restaurant. I hardly ever tell anyone it exists for fear it will become super busy and we'll never be able to get a table there. I must be going soft in my old age as I am letting you all in on the secret, probably banking on the fact you won't want to be bothered coming all the way to Sale for a meal and my monogamous love affair with Table 10 can continue uninterrupted. Run by the two loveliest people, lady front of house and chef in the kitchen who I've never met but as our favourite table sits under somewhere we can hear into the kitchen we feel we know him by his voice. It's a tiny restaurant (hence my irrational fear of overcrowding the reservations book!) traditional English in its decor, if there is such a thing, with a menu hand written on a blackboard that they prop up on a chair next to you. Got to love a handwritten blackboard menu! We love the bobotie pie here so much that Dan F has had to perfect his own version at home. It's not quite the same but we are close. Dan has an uncanny knack of ordering the best thing on any menu, seriously if you are out with him always order what he chooses or you will regret it. He went for the venison and it was fantastic. I had chicken which was lovely but after one small mouthful of what was left of Bambi I wanted to grab his off him and refuse to share the remained with him, probably not great valentines etiquette...... This review is now far too long so I'll just say desserts are classic 'nursery' choices and always delicious. They have a wine list that we are always happy to order off and usually have far more than we should as we enjoy it so much.

Its unassuming frontage on the busy main road hides a cosy, relaxed dining space with room for 30-40 covers. The staff are welcoming and can't do enough for you; they seem to know just the right time to pop back to the table to see if everything's alright without you feeling they're being excessive. There are lots of tempting choices on the modern, international menu (they've specials which change frequently). Stick to their standard menu though and you can enjoy a three course meal for £15.95 without drinks. I was enticed more from their specials on this occasion, ordering cod goujons followed by venison with porcini mushroom sauce and creamy mash. Everything was absolutely superb; so much so we decided to splurge and have dessert too. I'd heard the chef was South African so opted for the native cinnamon milktart which came with a scoop of ice cream and a shot of vodka! Some of their wines are available by the glass - I can recommend their Sauvignon Blanc. They're a real local gem, relying on fresh seasonal produce to lead their ever-changing menus. It's great to have another local restaurant to spread the word and rave about.

Receiving a warm, smiley welcome was a great start; there were several sets of diners already eating but a few tables available for walk-ins like us. We didn't look through the wine menu, deciding on a beer instead (the likes of San Miguel and Brahma from the Philippines and Brazil respectively) - it would've been great to have seen more Italian beers available, though admittedly they had Peroni (sigh). The food menu was filled with most of what you'd expect: olives, breads, tapas and paella. As we were both ravenous we ordered bread with salsa and then eight tapas dishes between us. It wasn't until after most of them had been brought to our table that the server mentioned they were generous portions! If you're not of abnormal appetite like me I'd say five or six dishes between two would be sufficient. Everything was mostly good - I probably wouldn't bother with the mushrooms or prawn fritter dishes again but the cuts of steak and Albondigas (meatballs) were mighty fine indeed. The bill came to a very reasonable £48 including two beers so you can eat well here for around £20 ish per head.

So this time we got a mix of meatballs, falafel, moussaka and chicken souvlakia among four. The food arrived fairly quickly which impressed us, and had really tasty sides like salads (that included olives) tomato and yoghurt based dips as well as pita breads. I had the moussaka and salad and it was so flavourful and properly seasoned it was just prefect. As I was enjoying the food it struck me that to call this restaurant food would be to mis inform. Oh no, this was home - cooking at its best and way above restaurant standard. What I mean is if you set out to make the best moussaka with the best ingredients this is what you'd get. As it was takeaway we had a few fabulous beers by 7 brothers that they brewed from Kellogg's coco pops and Rice Krispies from cereals that would otherwise just be wasted; instead it becomes beer and the brewery waste given over free to farmers to feed pigs. The takeaway food we got here was about £10 a head so darn good value really for the quality and deliciousness. And as I thought about it, Chinese takeaway prices in particular have risen unjustifiably year on year with food quality taking a real nose dive so next time we'll think of this Greek long before over paying for rubbish food. So if you have a Chinese local takeaway, and you are paying near a fiver for a starter and seven quid for a main please become more discerning. If the food isn't top notch now start saying so as it's the only way to bring higher standards back or you'll be paying through the nose for rubbish.

Certainly not the prettiest establishment on the block, but sometimes you get the best food from tatty looking places. Although the restaurant was empty, it took a while for the waiter to come over to take our orders. I must point out, he was a lovely, lovely man and very endearing. We ordered our starters and meals and anxiously waited to tuck in. Slowly other folks started to trickle in, which made us feel confident that it was a good place, given the numerous options immediately surrounding it on Northenden. Oddly, it seemed people that came in after us were getting served before us. We chalked it up to the fact that ours was getting special attention in the kitchen. The starters of tahini & pita and the fried feta came out. I've never had fried feta before and imagined it would be glorious. Guess what? It tastes just like it sounds....hot feta. Super salty, same consistency of unfried feta, just hotter and not very nice. The tahini was fine. For the mains, I had the lamb kabob and hubs had Greek sausages (forget what they are called). The lamb kabob (insert heavy sigh). It was way over cooked, and strangely didn't taste of anything yet still tasted not very good, if that makes sense. I almost took hubby's eye out after trying to slide a piece off the stick with my fork, and it was as if it was stuck with glue..finally giving way and flying across the table into my darlings baby blues. There was rice and a giant pile of shredded lettuce along with some raw veg (I have no problem with raw veg at all so that was one part of the meal I enjoyed). Very bland though, and hubs grumbled that his was not nice either. The highlight of the night was the lovely waiter. I wish all serving staff had his warm, friendly and charming personality. It almost made up for the sub-par food. Almost.

I can't believe it'd taken me so long to try them out. The décor is pretty sleek and stylish considering that they focus mostly on British cuisine. We came back to a cold, wet Manchester and decided to go to Linguine and try and get a table. I walk past this restaurant many times a week and there are always people in it and often very busy. We got there after 6.30pm and was told by the Manager that our table was required by 8pm, after looking at his tablet again, we had to be out by 7.30pm. Not sure how many covers there are but there were only four other tables taken. We sit down, tucked by the bar area and look at the menu. I asked a waiter which wine goes well with seafood and was given an idiots guide to the wine menu. His was Italian and his English wasn't good so I opted for a house white. Our food was served by another waiter as I wasn't sure whether the earlier gentleman was just a barman. We didn't have to wait long for our seafood pasta and pizza. The food came and it tasted very good. Unfortunately, I did not take photos as our service wasn't as friendly as I would have liked. The manager served our food. We ate our tasty food and kept looking around and seeing not many other customers arrive and wondering why he would lie about all the tables being occupied. We were dressed smart/casual for a Saturday night. Sadly, we didn't have any starters or desserts as we were very time conscious which also ruined our experience of the food. We asked for the bill, paid less than 10% tip and went over the road to the local Co-op to buy dessert and walked home feeling disappointed that we felt rushed and would have preferred to have dined in a different restaurant or got takeaway. As mentioned earlier, I am hoping for a better experience when I return in a couple of weeks time.
