I applied for a zipcar membership on Oct 29 2020. They took 33.90 for the application. I did not hear anything from them since. Called today to see what was going on and I am told they wanted a color photo of my driver's license and another ID. No email to ask for those or anything. Just kept me in the dark. I decided I did not trust that business anymore and asked for a refund. They did not argue with me leaving but they said they would not reimburse the $3.90 application fee as specified in their application literature. The worst customer experience I've ever had. Now FIVE times in a row the car we reserved has either not been at the location or the reservation is cancelled en route to picking up the car. I have tried to use zipcar over the past few years BUT the horrible customer support and user experience of their app I will never be using them again. I have UX errors logging in over years and everytime I need to use it I have to call in and they never are able to fix the problem. I tired deleteing the account completely and THEY CANNOT. Once upon a time, I recommended Zipcar to EVERYONE I knew in the city. About a year ago, cars were always available, and in pristine condition. You could tell the other members really cared about leaving the car ready for the next user, that or Zipcar had more frequent/better service on their cars then. Customer service was great! They're able to accommodate things like cancelling my reservation for no fee because I didn't feel comfortable driving in the surprise snowstorm or when the road was blocked at the zip car parking lot. As of last month I have had nothing but awful experiences. So much so, I've begun using Car2Go. Dirty cars, dead car batteries, cars out of commission for weeks because of outside damage YET still bookable!? Once upon a time I was able to return a car 15min late and not be charged a penalty - well a 90$ bill on a 30$ car ride later, I've learned my lesson. I've been put on hold for up to 10min at the start of reservations trying to find my reserved car because it was not in the designated spot, and I've been double charged with no apology from Zipcar. Worst customer service ever!! Their apps keeps crashing so I can't extend my reservation and when I tried they billed me for it. Then I was billed in another occasion when I didn't booked a session. It was their agent that reserve the car just so I can retrieve my wallet for merely 10 minutes and she confirmed I won't be billed! This issue has been on going for more than one month with no end. Do yourself a favor and go with a different service: 1.Cars were dirty, smokey, smelly. 2. Cars sometimes didn't start. 3. Cars sometimes weren't even where they were supposed to be whne you come to pick them up. You call customer service and after a 20 minute wait they ask you to walk halfway across the city to retrieve your car... 4. The key cards/locks are very temperamental and often don't work (same issues for me and others I know). I was stuck in a freezing cold car park for 2 hours. 5. Kept on charging my account for months after the subscription service ended. This is not a reliable car sharing service/car rental company. I would not recommend using this service. zipcar is unreliable, they lied to me about their brand new winter tires and put me and my friends lives in risk by giving us a "winter ready" car with tires that could not drive up the mountain. They refused me a refund and insisted that their tires are brand new while I have friends with all season tires having no problems getting up Cypress mountain in Vancouver on the same day we were travelling. We were stuck in the middle of the mountain while having a road patrol lecturing us on how our tires are not good for the mountain and that it will not make it up. I informed customer hotline about our frustrating situation but all they did was rushed us to drive the car back to it's original placement assuring us that perhaps headoffice may approve us of our refund but will take 1-2 business days. We returned the car immediately and 9 hours earlier than our booking time. BUT here I am having no refunds or driving credit and receiving an email from headoffice that the tires are in "perfect" condition (perfect condition to them means poor quality). AVOID - FRAUDULENT and I'm not even through the application process. Zipcar charged my credit card before I was even through the application process online. I have a Yukon license that can't be verified right away and the steps I would need to take were off putting enough that I stopped the application process mid-way through. I then saw that zipcar had already charged $25 to my account! I phoned - it is nearly impossible to speak to a live person - and when I got through they said that was their "application fee". Total BS. I asked to speak to a manager, was 'transferred' and then disconnected. I subsequently researched online and saw that this company has been hit with multiple billing practise complaints. IF YOU ARE EVEN CONSIDERING SIGNING UP, READ THIS FIRST! I rented a truck to go camping this summer for 4 days. Last month I received a notice that during that time I got a parking ticket. The ticket was issued in a city that was 450km's the opposite way of where I was. I called and told them there was some kind of mistake, I was never there and they put in a dispute. I went to reserve a car yesterday and my account is locked until I pay this ticket! I showed them that Gatineau is 450 km's from my house, one way. On my reservation invoice that they issue it says I drove 396 km's so pretty simple right? Gatineau is a 900 km round trip and I only drove 396 so that is proof I couldn't have been there! Nope, not to Zipcar! They told me sorry we already paid the ticket so you have to pay it. WTF? I have been a member for like 6 years my wife 4 years before that. There have been some summer months where we spent over $3000 on Zipcars. I spent enough with them to buy my own car, that alone should be enough to get rid of the ticket! But on top of that I have PROVEN BEYOND ALL DOUBT that I was never there and yet my account is still locked. They say they have the industry's gold standard of service, now you know that's bull. I signed up for a monthly membership last month and was surprised when I received the credit card bill with an amount 3 times+ the membership fee tacked on to it. When I called, they said it was an 'application fee'. I don't mind paying for something as long as it's an informed choice. What Zipcar did was get my credit card information and then commit what amounts to 'pilfering' from my account. Didn't expect it from a well-known company like them and for what is a small amount. Members and potential members beware before entrusting them your info. I called again and was offered a credit by the customer rep but when I agreed, she said she'd been mistaken and couldn't do it. LITERALLY THE WORST!!! First experience was fine, car was dirty and stank of weed. Then my second experience the car I booked wasn't there the call center was very unhelpful and rude I had to walk for miles to get to the next car they booked for me and I was advised I had to drop the car back there instead of where I booked it from, wasn't given a time extension except I was on hold for over 20mins, then I was charged a late fee and the car had no fuel in it. When I spoke to the call center again they said - not their problem you'll have to take it up with the "billing department". My second experience the car was again dirty and had no fuel in it and guess what...no fuel card, I was advised too bad you need to fill it up yourself and submit a claim which may be paid in around 3-5 business days...if you don't you will get a fine...Honestly avoid avoid avoid!!! read more

Awesome! Zipcar would be considered an "essential service" if this were a perfect world. The world is not perfect, however, which means countless people continue to pay inflated insurance rates, service fees, storage costs, and so on for their vehicles... while we get a near-mint car when, where, and for how long we need it, virtually hassle free. Did I say "awesome"? Some might complain that their late fees are punitive, but we actually appreciate them. The service only works if you're on time... if everybody is five minutes late, suddenly the booking times are all out of whack and the thing breaks down. So hey, learn to be punctual for once, right? Right. Besides, it's stupid-easy to add more time to your booking if time is available, so getting stuck with a late charge is really your fault alone. Anyway, here are the best things about Zipcar: 1) Gas and insurance are included in your price. That's right... *** Gas is Included! *** 2) Your membership covers all of North America, not just the city you live in. That means if we're visiting New York and need wheels, we've got 'em. 3) Remote service. If you have a problem, no worries, just call or text and they're quick to help. They can even remotely lock/unlock, or even start your vehicle if you're having troubles! 4) Clean. For a shared service, we've been amazed at how well-kept the vehicles are... usually even better than the rentals we've had. 5) Convenient. Ok, maybe this should be #1. There are so many locations to pick up a vehicle, you're practically guaranteed access even for last minute needs. You might have to walk a bit further, but rest assured, they've got you covered. For the record, we use the St Helens/Bloor, Dundas W/Bloor, and Dundas W/Ritchie pickup locations, and have been pleased with all three. So, hurray for Zipcar... if you don't have a membership, seriously consider one. Or check out Autoshare. This is a follow-up to my previous review. I realized as I write this update that I must have a love-hate relationship with Zipcar. This hourly car sharing/rental service has improved it's availability of cars around the city. There are at least a handful of vehicles in the eastern and western areas of the city. It also appears that Zipcar Toronto has a new manager, and perhaps this new manager has spread out cars around the city? Regardless, it has been a great improvement. I've learned that Zipcar is a participating organization in "Live Green Toronto" [http://livegreencard.ca/business/zipcar]. "Live Green Toronto" is a free program by the City of Toronto that offers discounts at merchants that work to "be green" in the course of their business. Zipcar's deal is a $35 annual membership, $30 application fee, and the customer gets a $60 driving credit. After my membership expired, but within 30 days from expiry, I applied for a free "Live Green Toronto" membership, and reapplied to Zipcar under the "Live Green Toronto" plan. I was disappointed to learn that the "Live Green Toronto"-Zipcar deal is a one time offering, but now that cars are more spread out over the city, my previous argument against Zipcar and the travel time is reduced. I had a great customer service experience with the company in December. I needed to transport hardwood and I turned to Zipcar for the task. Unfortunately an accident on HWY 404 resulted in me bringing the car back 10 minutes late. When I returned the car I apologized a lot the the waiting person, and called Zipcar. I explained that an accident resulted in me bringing the car back late, the consequent traffic jam ate up my entire time cushion to return the car and went over by 10 minutes, and I couldn't call Zipcar when I was driving. The lady I spoke to was very helpful after looking into my file, I assume the GPS pattern of driving, and when I signed out. She waived the late fee for me. I was happy to pay the late fee (as I did bring the car back late), but I was very appreciative for her to take it off. While I'd hope that Zipcar allows city-dwellers to continue to have some "Live Green Toronto" benefits after the first year with a "Live Green" membership, Zipcar has spread cars around Toronto more, and their customer service showed compassion and understanding. I still hope that Zipcar can reduce their hourly rates for driving (I speak to this is my previous review), but having spread out cars and great customer service is undeniable. Zipcar, I thought we were over. You had refused to change your pattern of making me play second-fiddle, and I called it off. We took some time apart and it really was good for you. Now I see that you've really been working on yourself. I can see that you appreciate me more now and recognize the extra time and effort I had to put in to keep our thing going last time. I'm glad to see that you recognize that every realtionship needs to be give and take, and I'm happy that you're carrying your share now. I like the changes you've made; they're things I can live with, and there is room for me. So, ya, you got me interested again but I think we should take things slow and see how it goes. Zipcar is a great service that comes in handy when you need wheels on short notice. If you need a car for longer than a couple hours and have time to pre-plan, I find it more economical to go to a regular car rental agency and get a car for 24 hours...this all depends on your needs of course. I have been a member for over 3 years now and will continue to keep up my membership because Zipcar has been a lifesaver at times. My only complaint is make sure you don't forget anything in the car - they will make you rent the car for the 1hr minimum to unlock the doors to retrieve your item. read more

Dear Zipcar Toronto, Thank you for winning my worst lifetime customer experience besides Sears and CapitalOne. They harassed me at least 5 times on a yearly basis to rentals I had, and trying deeply hard to take money from your pocket for fault not made by myself but other Zipsters / strangers. If you eventually find sufficient proof to show them you are innocent and upset, then they gave you a verbal sorry and that is it, easy than anything. And expect harassments and taking more and more money from your credit card account without giving you sufficent proof. You want to fight for it? It took days, your patience, and your mood as well. Overall their nonprofessional practices and sneaky customer experience have outweighed the convenience they provided. To me they are more like a scam or a drug now, it does me more financial harm in long term. I am planning to report them to BBB currently. I wish there was a zero star option when it comes to ZipCar. I was a member for three years, before cancelling my account earlier this week. Here are some of my experiences: 1. While I am a dog owner, I have never used ZipCar to transport my dog. I don't have the necessary equipment to transport him safely. After using a rental for a day, I wrapped everything up. A few days later, I was hit with a $50+ charge from ZipCar for cleaning. When I contacted them, they told me the interior was coated in dog hair and the charge was for a cleaning fee. "Coated" is a significant stretch - there may have been a few strands from my clothes, but they didn't contact me or ask me about it. They just charged me without any heads up. 2. Recently, I switched credit cards. Having not used the service for some time, I forgot to update my card on my account. That's my fault, and I fully get that. Without any contact (no emails, despite the fact they tried to say they sent multiple), my account was suspended. Only when it was referred to a collection agency (for a measly $15, I might add), did I realize something was off and fixed it. Days after it was already sent to a collection agency, only then did I receive an email saying it was "final notice" and that my account COULD be suspended and sent to collections (remembering they had already done this, without any prior contact). Their agents were unhelpful and reluctant to help in both of these situations. It took a lot of pestering and pushing back to get refunds or support in both instances. After the second situation, and their refusal to admit any problems on their end, I cancelled my account. My advice? Don't spend your money with ZipCar; they have gone downhill significantly in the past few months, their customer service is subpar and the maintenance of the cars is lacking. If you can get the services of Car2Go, use them for in-city trips and spend the extra to rent from a rental company. read more

I have been trying to get a letter of good driving after being a Zipcar member for about a year and a half. I called 4 times, 3 times to be told yes, it would be coming (and that they had escalated it) and then on the 4th, to be told Zipcar no longer offers this service, which is one of the reasons I joined in the first place! The company never sent out any notice of this and the people who answered the phone seemed unaware of the change. So if you are looking to join a carshare program for insurance purposes, I advise you to look elsewhere and check the small print. Very upset. read more

I joined Zipcar before I had the means to get my own wheels... And what did I do foolishly as soon as I had the means? Yes, I got a car. Sadly this car is painfully expensive now that my starving artist income has returned. I do still maintain my Zip membership because it's super handy to have access to all sorts of various sized vehicles. Also, if my wife takes the car for a few days to visit family, I'm not SOL if I have a gig. The good part of maintaining a membership, even if you don't have your own car and even if you don't use it... it maintains your insurance history so if you ever do need to become a cage-dwelling 9-5 rage-o-holic, then at least your insurance will start off cheap until you plough into the back of a cop car while texting and drunk on your way to work in the "crush" hour traffic. I suspect I might return to carlessness with the help of Zipcar in the future... Probably when my current vehicle becomes too expensive to maintain on my budget of $12 per month. read more

Should have been a five minute call to look at the document and refund the charge as it was clear I didn't rent the car on the date the infraction occurred. GUYS! STAY AWAY FROM ZIPCAR!!! I was on their monthly trial and had the most horrible first experience. I thought, hmmmm, maybe its just this one time. NOPE! I live a DRAMA FREE life, so things like this just dont happen to me. Second time, reserved at a location that wasnt the most convenient, but it was the weekend, at the closest location where they had a vehicle available. I arrived and the battery of the car was dead. Yup! I called customer service and explained the situation and they were aware the battery was dead. Why would they have this car available if they knew the battery was dead?!? I was shocked. I asked them this and they only apologized for the inconvenience. 20 mins later, they found another car not too far from where I was. I appreciated the upgrade for the same price. I turned on the car and whole and behold, a warning sign pops up, "battery needs to be replaced." I drove it anyway, risking the chance of the car breaking down, but it didn't. Probably not the best idea, but at this point, I needed to get to where I planned before they closed. Since I was still on trial, I gave it one more chance. I reserved it and when I wanted to return, there was a non zipcar parked where I should have parked. I called customer service and they told me to find parking some where else and let them know where I had parked. They told me if I parked it in a tow away zone or got any parking tickets, I would be responsible for it. The most ridiculous thing I have ever heard! OH, and they charged me an extra 30 minutes it took me to drive around and find a parking spot. Currently in search of another car share service! YOU'VE BEEN WARNED! read more

I use Zipcar often. I work downtown 5 days a week so buying a car is fruitless. On the weekends, I use it for a variety of stuff. It's easier than using my dad's car. At least Zipcar won't nag me about when I'm bringing the car back. I agree with Chris P that if you want it for a last minute weekend thing, they can be hard to find. But if you know of your plans in advance, definitely book it beforehand and you'll have a plethora of cars to choose from. They aren't always the cleanest. But I'm not as bothered since I only see it as a means from point A to point B. Do remember to check around the car for damage before getting into it--cuz you could be blamed for the damage and have to pay. Also, their automated system bugs me. I recently had an issue where I thought I had lost my Zipcard (used to enter the car). I wasn't near a computer and my phone at the time didn't have internet. I called their service but you need your Zipcar number to get through the initial prompt. Guess where that number is printed? On the actual Zipcard! I did eventually end up finding it. Still, how can I let the company know I've lost my card if I need the dang card to log in to their phone system? I love it but dealing with customer service can be frustrating at times. One thing I do love is the ability to book and return cars anytime you want, like on holidays. With rental cars, you sometimes have to add another day because the rental car office was closed. With Zipcar, I can book a car to go to a party, return it around 5am, walk home, go to sleep and not have to worry about waking up early to return it to an office. The service is extremely convenient and it works for when I need it. read more

Was a member or 5 years when they had good customer service, clean reliable cars and a working reservation system. I have since cancelled and would recommend considering to a competing service. Absolutely sinister customer service, overly generous fee application and dirty and damaged vehicles and broken reservation system to name a few key issues. Even after extending a reservation, fully expect the vehicle to be disabled, alarm activated and at least 30 mins on the phone with customer service (while the alarm is on). This is by far the worst company I've ever dealt with. They refuse to take accountability for their employees mistakes, and do not reimburse for their misrepresentation. They continually drag out conversations and go in circles just to tell you they won't help you and make it impossible to speak to someone higher up when they don't listen. They hangup when you insist, or try to redirect them back to the main issue you're inquiring about. They refuse to refund when there is proof it is their mistake. They have left me stranded with a car that they remotely turned off, waiting for 2 hours on the phone for someone to pick up. They have continued to charge me monthly for their service after requesting it be cancelled and refusing to refund for all of it due to not having proof of my request and still refuse after forwarding the email with proof. Half the cars I've booked have been dirty/smelly or have some sort of issue causing it to be unsafe to drive.
