Bestes Jägerschnitzel in der Gegend. Super schönes Außengelände auch. Qualität ist schon seit Jahren stetig gut.

Apfelwein Solzer - Schweinshaxe mit Kartoffelpü und Kraut (EUR 19, 80/Stand Oktober 2022)

Unlike most of the restaurants in this hipster neighborhood, Solzer offers traditional German fare, and we started with Handkäs' mit Musik, a chewy, mochi-like cheese dressed with vinegar and onions and served with a slice of farmer's bread. One of their signature entrees was "Solzer's Krüstchenschnitzel," a breaded pork fillet served over a slice of grilled farmer's bread, topped with a fried egg and bacon, and served with green sauce (sour cream and herbs), horseradish, and a refreshing salad (lettuce, tomato, carrots, red onion, peppers, pumpkin seeds) on the side. This was a nicely balanced plate, and the different components came together nicely from the savory, crispy schnitzel to the herbaceous, creamy green sauce and the acidic, refreshing salad. Everything of course went nicely with their apple wine, and the service was friendly and attentive too!

The patio was open and it really gave the restaurant a nice indoor/outdoor feel. When we first sat down, beers were ordered. As Americans, we're used to ordering a pint. What I noticed, Apfelwein Solzer as well as other pubs are serving very large beers, 1.5 or even 2 pint glasses? Am I complaining? Hello no! For my meal I ordered the Hunters Cutlet with Frankfurt sauce. The sauce is the towns local specialty, it tasted herbaceous, very flavorful and unexpected. The place was packed, we had a great meal and was glad we took the Uber from our hotel. The Uber ride back with the driver doing 200 KPH is another story.

The restaurant is quaint, with a peculiar decor, but it added to the effect. They had both indoor and outdoor seating, so we were able to enjoy the weather. It is a great family atmosphere, and was off the screaming tourist path. The service was great - our waiter spoke both English and German, and was friendly. He offered us an English menu, and joked around with us, making for a fun experience. The food was stellar. There's something endearing about a simple plate, but what made it special was just how well each item was made. The sausage crunched, the potatoes were the best I've had, and the sauerkraut was... exactly what you'd expect out of sauerkraut! Do not doubt the portion sizes, one of the mains will be enough to fill the standard eater's fill. "Apple wine" is a staple, but not really for me. For the unacquainted, it is essentially German cider, popular in Frankfurt. Theirs was crisp and tasty. Plenty of beer options as well, thankfully!

We used our trusty Google translate app to determine the menu items that were unfamiliar to us, and ordering was easy enough. (Luckily, a lot of what we ordered we knew about, but we also pointed to the menu just in case, since it was a bit louder than average.) I'm glad we didn't come on an empty stomach, as it took a good 35 to 40 min before our food arrived. I got the Rindswurst and the bf got the Nuremburg sausages that came with sauerkraut and mashed potatoes, of which they did NOT skimp. Half the plate was kraut, half potatoes. We couldn't finish all of it, though we tried! Since it was technically Thanksgiving and because I already had a lot of roasted potatoes, I was glad to see that the potatoes were "puree" (aka mashed), which made it feel a little more appropriate. What has astounded me is how inexpensive beer is. Most beer items are the same price or even cheaper than soda. (Probably b/c the soda is imported, but still!). Instead of being a "cheap date" with a non-alcohol beverage, I was an average date. LOL. In any case, from what we could tell there weren't a lot of tourists. It's on the south side, across the river from the main part of Frankfurt, but it is easy to get to, either by walking or by local transportation.
