After a long day of breaking porcelain plates in the front yard of a friend's house before a wedding in Germering (I believe you Bavarian types call this event a "Polterabend"), a handful of friends and myself had a hankering to hit downtown Munich for a quick bite before calling it a night. We just sort of strolled though the alleyways of the city center and settled on this cute outdoor restaurant Zwicki. You can tell this this place is more popular with tourists than the locals as almost all of their menus are in english, and all of their specials of the day were written in english on a chalkboard as well. But whether this eatery is designed for out-of-towners or not, the food and service was really superb. I personally only had a small dish of mushrooms in cream sauce accompanied with house made dumplings. These particular dumplings were far and away the best I had while in Munich for 5+ days and the simplicity of the mushrooms and cream rounded out a straightforward, yet very tasty snack. We also had a chance to try a local Riesling as well as Bavaria's first whiskey - they were both quite nice and satisfied exactly what we were looking for. While I'm sure there are more authentic dives for Bavarian food in München, Zwicki was perfectly satisfying. I'm sure you could do much worse elsewhere. read more

I liked this place alot. We went for dinner after an afternoon at the Viktualenmarkt. The restaurant itself is on a side-street near the market, a bit quieter and intimate, with outdoor seating great for people watching. I liked the inside - stylish and modern (and a bit eccentric - visit the bathroom complete with barnyard noises to see what I mean :) Food: amazing bread and herbed cream cheese, really excellent wild herb salad. For the main i had one of the specials - a risotto with mushrooms fresh from the market, with meatballs. The meat was great, though I'd have to say my favourite was the spinach and alpine cheese, which just melts in your mouth. Also tried the quark balls with truffle as well as the Käsespätzle, which were great as well (it's hard to mess up anything with cheese and truffles!) Only downside was the service - a bit long and our I found our waitress rude. All round though, great place, great atmosphere. read more

Judging by good alone, it would get 3 stars. Decent fried pork and dumplings. The ginger lemonade was to mild but refreshing. However, service is terribly rude (at least for my American sensibilities). We were there with our infant. As usual, tried to be as quick as possible and as conscientious of those around us. For instance, I was searching for a spoon to feed my baby his lunch so he wouldn't get fussy. The waitress snapped at me for looking in a jar of silverware that was next to my table. She then practically slammed a spoon down in front of me when I asked. We had multiple encounters of this kind. For being in a tourist zone, I was shocked. read more

This place was amazing! Cute little tables with bright purple flowers outside on the cobblestone streets of downtown Munich. We watched the bustling farmer's market in the cool breeze as we ate our delicious food. We had the meatball of chicken with cucumber-potato salad and the meatball of veal with gnocchi. Both were like nothing we've ever had and so good. The crispy light crust was delicious and each plate came with a home-made dipping sauce that paired perfectly! This German cuisine was impressive. For dessert, we had the Sugar Cut Pancakes with Apple slices...again like nothing we've ever tasted but so decadent. The waiter was so nice and polite. He even gave us the history on the desert we chose and it's direct translation from German to English. After the meal, we walked around the downtown streets in the perfect summer evening weather. My wife and I rarely visit the same restaurant more than once on a trip but after having an amazing lunch here, we made sure to make a reservation for dinner. The menu is the same but we made sure to pick different entrees. Dinner did not disappoint. My wife ordered the duck meatballs and I the roasted pork with potato dumplings. Both dishes were extremely flavorful. The duck balls were delicate and bursting with flavor. We highly recommend you using the cherry infused mustard. The roasted pork was juicier than a fresh squeezed orange juice directly through the vines of Florida. Food is fresh and they make their own flavored mustards which should not be missed. Zwickl was a lovely evening. I think the food only merited 2 stars, but the atmosphere and service were so nice that I upped my rating. The menu at Zwickl is creative, but I think could be better executed. For dinner, I got the prawn balls with risotto and boyfriend got the schnitzel. The prawn balls pretty much tasted like a salmon cake. I think I have something similar in my freezer? The risotto was overly creamy but actually shockingly bland. It basically was cream to an excess that hid any other flavor. I thought that the olive oil and balsamic vinegar they added were good, but not enough to make this flavorful. The schnitzel was a bit dry, but it was pretty decent anyways. I thought that the addition of the cranberry and lemon made it much better! The potatoes on the side were a mix of nicely crispy and soggy. To drink, we both got the Zwickl 111 beer, which was awesome. It has a cute bottle design and the unfiltered dark lager was really delicious. The atmosphere of the restaurant is really nice. It's dark without being too dark and has lots of small flickering lights, pillows, and pictures. It's very cozy, pretty, and purple. I've heard the patio is nice too, but it was being renovated while we were there. The bathrooms are also amazing - they have bird/ farm sounds playing, big grassy fields on display, and lots of little mushrooms as decor! Very cute. Our waiter was pretty good. He was very attentive and kind. He wasn't great with recommendations (we asked him what he liked on the menu and he just listed the items on the menu) but maybe that's not a thing people ask about in Germany. read more

Zwickl is hip, small and has great food - I'll be coming here as long as they keep the atmosphere and quality. For food: if you're lucky, try the special Bavarian Burger, or give the chicken meatball a try for something a bit more traditional. We were in the Viktualienmarkt and used Yelp! to help us find somewhere for lunch. When we arrived the tables outside were still in the sunshine, so even though it was the 7th December we ate out in the fresh air, which was very nice. I had wiener schnitzel and roast potatoes with cranberry sauce, which was very good but perhaps a little over-priced at 20 Euros. My wife had the noodles in cheese sauce, which she said were delicious. We had a couple of small glasses of wine each. The whole thing was 45 Euros. The service was very friendly and efficient and it was a delight to sit there and watch the world go by. Inside it looked very well appointed and friendly - and full, so unless you are mad English people like us who enjoy eating outside in December, you should probably book in advance. read more

One of my favorite meals in Munich. Grab a seat outside for lunch and enjoy the atmosphere - they even have blankets at your tables if it's chilly out. The service was amazing and I loved the traditional Bavarian outfits that our servers wore. The best part was the food though! My meal was phenomenal! I ordered the chicken meatballs per recommendation of our server and I'm not sure how else I'd describe them other than the best chicken nugget meatballs that I've ever had. Presentation was beautiful and they were served with a curry mustard that was also amazing. Must do if you are in Munich. On an exceptionally hot early August day, we relied on Yelp recommendations to select this restaurant, in the Viktualienmarkt. Outdoor seating was fully occupied, but at length, they found a place for us inside, which we felt was preferable considering the heat outside. The meal was excellent, and I must say that the presentation of the food (both entrees and dessert) was impressive by the standards we experienced on our trip. This was one of our favorite meals during our vacation, and very reasonably priced. My wife selected the pork and beef meatball (Zwickl Pflanzerl) which was excellent. Our daughter ordered the roast pork (Schweinebraten) which I enjoyed more than the pork knuckle which I had at another restaurant the next day. I got the Goulash (Rindergulasch). For dessert, we had a charming Bavarian Creme which was both tasty and beautiful. This restaurant places a lot of emphasis on presentation: pleasant interior and attractive dishes. The waitress was very pleasant and patient with our inability to speak German. Do make reservations in advance for peak dining hours. read more

Came here based on the excellent reviews but our experience was awful. Don't know if they were understaffed or just busy, but we felt unwelcome from the moment we walked in. There only seemed to be two servers working and the younger of the two "greeted" us (a very cold and unfriendly greeting at that) and from the moment we walked it acted like we were annoying him. He sat us and while checking on other tables frequently had to be called over to take our order even though our menus were closed and down. I tried ordering the goulash and after a long pause he told me unapologetically that they didn't have spätzle, only dumplings. I asked what kind of dumplings as that is a vague term that can be applied to huge puffy balls or thin flat sheets and just replied "dumplings". My wife lived in Munich and speaks fluently, and she said afterwards it wasn't a language barrier, he was just being aloof and snarky. We decided to leave feeling unwelcome and they weren't concerned at all about us walking out. read more

This place is a must when visiting Munich. It is a cozy little restaurant tucked away in a nice quiet area near the outdoor market. The servers are friendly and patient, making suggestions on what to order. The meatballs will blow your mind! I suggest the ones stuffed in red peppers. Also if you have room left try one of the cheesecakes that are presented to you in a little jar, they are super yummiest too. Outdoor seating is available and they do provide blankets for those chilly evenings. Finally make it a point to use the WC downstairs, as they are very interesting. The problem was not with the food, the food was above average. It came when we got the bill. It was about 40 euros and I left a 50, after being reminded by the waiter that tip was not included. That always puts me off a little because I don't need to be told to tip, I'm from the US and I know how to tip our underpaid servers. When he came to collect the money, I expected to be given my change. However, this waiter proceeded to grab it, look at me, and say "the tip is not included" once again, expecting me to simply tell him to take it. He did give me the change after I asked for it. It was extremely rude and he talked his way out of a bigger tip because until that point the service was good. Left a bad taste in my mouth after a decent meal. read more

While the food was perfectly above average, the service here was so bad that I cannot in good conscience let people eat here without a warning. After finishing our food we waited twenty minutes for a drink refill/someone to clear the plate/ask for the Check, before I gave up and went to the bar where I waited ten more minutes for someone to acknowledge me so that I could ask for the check. Then we waited another ten to twenty minutes to pay the check because we did not want to dare continue trying to order drinks at this restaurant. Great contemporary take on Bavarian cuisine. We had a goat cheese salad that included an eclectic variety of leafy greens and three different meat ball dishes. The chorizo meatballs were delicious as well as the pork and beef. The salmon meatballs tasted a little dry but the cucumber yogurt salad that came with it made up for it.
