I called and arranged for them to have a walk through the day before. They estimated it would take about 5/8 to 3/4 of a truck to take my stuff. When the crew (of 2 people) came (8/31), they looked around and gave me the same estimate. So they started to load up the truck. If you think they do it in a way that is conducive to recycling and giving usable things to charity, don't count on it. I had deliberately left some pretty reasonable things so that someone else could make use of it. Some pretty nice clothes, a very sturdy table, other stuff. Well, they took the table apart and tossed aside the lug nuts, and threw the pieces into the truck. No way that table was ever going to be used. They stuffed the clothes into barrels. I said to one of them, "this is just going straight to a landfill, isn't it?" and he just nodded his head, but looking unsure. Eventually they saw that there was more stuff than 3/4 of a truck, and they said they'd have to charge me extra. I said that wasn't how they had advertised the deal on the web site, and I was going to call the company. Instead, they called their manager, who authorized the initially agreed upon price. They continued and they started to run out of room and said they might have to call another truck. Seeing that they were almost done, I suggesting just leaving the few remaining things on the sidewalk. They were sweating through the whole thing, and were completely uptight because they were late for their next appointment and their manager was giving them a hard time about it. No way they were going to sweep up, as advertised - I ended up doing that myself. I felt sorry for them and gave them a big tip. So the company calls me a couple of days later to follow up on whether things went well, and I tell them my story. They apologized, and said that they weren't supposed to do what they did and that this particular team was already under observation. They said they'd refund 10% of the charge (less than the tip, actually). As of now, I haven't yet received said refund. I don't know, I see a lot of positive reviews here, so my experience may be the exception, but this was a very bad experience for me, and I can't recommend them. UPDATE: The company did subsequently get in touch with me, offering a "courtesy refund", which is to their credit, and they sent me a release form to sign in order to receive the 10% refund. The release required me, in return for payment, to release them from all claims. This seems reasonable to me, but it also required me to "remove all reviews and comments" about them, as well as refrain from making further comments (there was no previous mention of this in their offers of a refund). In my opinion, this is a disservice to the people considering using gotjunk, because it deceives them into thinking that the service is better than it actually is. But that's the whole purpose of Yelp - to give people an honest account of their experiences. I feel obligated to do just that, so I will not participate in that deception. I've been meaning to write a review for some time now but have been extremely busy, I first and foremost wanted to thank Chris and Angel (my saviors) for their service, it has been difficult with the passing of my mother, not to mention all of the clutter she had accumulated in the past 30 years. They were able to fill a truck in record time without damaging a single thing in the apartment or the building, the super was impressed as well, Angel was able to dismantle a complicated entertainment center with his tools. Other companies had turned down the task of clearing the apartment out because of the heavy sofas, narrow pathways and being in a 6 story building, but Chris and Angel had big gleaming smiles on their faces the whole time and just made the experience tolerable for myself and my daughter. As they were clearing, they had found expensive keepsakes and photos that were valuable to me and my family, and had been searching for many years, they actually took the time to help us sort through the mess to avoid disposing of our irreplaceables, Chris was even kind enough to help my daughter with a few of her calculus equations she was having trouble with during this whole process, just the kind of guys you would have over for drinks, extremely genuine and distinctive gents. It restores my faith that there are people out there who do care and are good people who take the job seriously. Thank you guys for your professionalism and compassion in this difficult time, I will highly recommend you two for any friend, family member or coworker that would need your service. the 2 guys came late even though they said they will come around 8 pm. then they gave me a estimate i thought was high for only a bed a mattress and an old 20 inch tv that was sort of heavy and a small broken chair. they gave me an estimate of $269 i said no. i said can pay $125 at that the guy said $200 and i said $150. they agreed. the other guy said they drove an hour to come here etc. i thought that was odd that they negotiated like that when they said the prices are fixed etc. i also felt one guy was talking kind of rudely and he even dropped this heavy tv set on the floor making a thud from 2 to 3 feet above. i complained and a manager or supervisor called me just now named justin and he kept talking and kept defending his employee. he told me that this employee had the perfect record up until now. im the first person complaining. i told him that this could be part of the governmental targeting program becuase these things are happening on a continual basis with others as well. i told him im muslim from india. i told him they are targeting many others as well. i told the manager to enter this as a complain or an incident in the employees record. i said im not calling to judge him im made a report to state what had happened. i also felt that this hispanic guy was talking in a rude manner. and the ohter guy the taller guy was normal or professional. i wanted this matter to remain in this employees record as long as that person is in the employment market. just like compliments remain in permanent record of emplyees. this manager flatly refused to do that and told me to do whatever i have to do about it. read more

Last year, I had to clean out about 90 percent of my mother's apartment (queen-sized bed; couch; coffee table; etc.) in a very short amount of time. I went with 1-800-GOT-JUNK based on their TV ads and the various reviews I had read on Yelp. I can't say I made the decision with full confidence, but I didn't really have much time to consider other options. Fortunately, the company's services far exceeded my expectations. Booking the appointment online was surprisingly easy and user-friendly. Then, on the day of, the two guys who showed up to my apartment performed their duties swiftly, efficiently and without asking many questions (which, considering the apartment was located in a stuffy building on the Upper East Side, I appreciated). They were also on time, very friendly and incredibly communicative, which made the experience all the better. Within 30-or-so minutes, a once stressful situation suddenly became easy and totally manageable. The bill came out to be a little over $800. That's a lot of money, yes; but if you're in a pinch like I was, having two guys come in and take care of everything for you is much better than the stress, time and cost of doing it yourself. Steven in the Manhattan office, along with his team (led by Vincent who is an absolute master packer), worked so hard to make sure that my company was satisfied with the job. Not only did the job get done, but the gentlemen were polite, good-hearted, and genuinely nice to be around. They went above and beyond to be sure we were happy and I couldn't be more grateful. I am giving five stars here solely based on my impressions of the Manhattan franchise, not the Corporate office. Not only did the Corporate office fail on their part of the process, but it's taken their customer service department a week to get back to me. Recently called a local company to pick up a few bags of trash and some pieces of old furniture I was throwing away. They failed to show up on two occasions. I saw an ad for 1-800-GOT-JUNK and scheduled an appt. online for the SAME day. Not only did the two gentlemen arrive on time, but they also called ahead to tell me they were on their way. The guys were extremely polite and gave me a rough estimate on the spot. While the price was a bit higher than the local company quoted me, these guys were in fact here and on time, unlike the other company. They moved everything out in about 20 minutes and left no mess. I was able to pay by credit card and the whole process could not have been simpler. I also liked that their uniforms were neat and clean. I recently moved into my apartment and was afraid of having the junk removal guys be in dirty clothes trapsing dirt and debris everywhere. It was not at all like that. My husband and I planned a two stage move out to prepare for home renovations and redecorating. On day 1, Casey and Addison arrived on time, took inventory of what they would be moving that day, and proceeded to remove a full truckload of furniture and accessories from our home. Those two guys could not have been more courteous and professional. They worked quickly and intelligently, negotiating a steep and narrow flight of stairs without a fuss. Before leaving, we asked Casey for an estimate for the second stage of the move out and requested that he and Addison return for the job. Casey told us we needed a quarter of the truck for the next trip, but couldn't guarantee that he and Addison would be back. A week later, Henny and Ervin arrived for the final haul. I used this company over a dozen times in the past two years to help me with a personal situation at home. I cannot recommend 1-800-got-junk enough. Jeff and his team of guys were always professional and understanding to my situation. They call ahead to let you know they are on their way. I have two dogs who are always weary of strangers so it gave me time to get them on a leash and over to my neighbors or in another room. My building was also really hard to work with. They were always trying to find reasons to kick me out. That's why I had to hire got junk in the first place. They wouldn't let us take more than one trash bag per person in the elevator at a time, but Jeff and his guys always helped me with this without complaining. They even began to know the concierge on a first name basis which made things a lot easier for me as a tenant. Got junk came in the heat, rain, and snow. I did quite a bit of research to have junk removed from my fifth floor walk up apartment in downtown Manhattan. Many services I called had a "walk up fee" which at one company was as high as $100 per floor per man. 1-800 Got Junk not only had a very reasonable pricing system (price is based on how much junk fits in their truck), I found the customer service to be fantastic and everything went as seamlessly as I could have ever dreamed of. I also just want to comment that the men who helped me clear out my apartment, Shawn and Carlos, were friendly, efficient, and beyond professional. They never even mentioned what a pain it must have been going up and down my stairs, and the quote I was given over the phone actually came out to less after the job was complete. I had such a great experience with Luis R. and Josias M. Honestly, these guys did such a great job. I had to clear out a lot of stuff from previous tenants who just left a bunch of crap; a couch, three chairs, three beds (disgusting beds), 12 doors that weighed 50 lbs each (not kidding), etc. I will say it took them two trips because they had previously picked up at other locations but they did it in such a timely manner and were so positive through the whole experience. It was so seamless and compared to other companies so reasonably priced. They actually helped me get everything out of the apartment where as the other company wanted me to put it all on the curb. Don't you guys always see the 1-800-GOT-JUNK ads on NY1 or around the city and think of all the junk you could get rid of? Well, I saw their ad for the 49.99 couch special right around the time I was going to replace mine. Their online appointment scheduling could not be simpler. Literally 3 clicks and some important information and you're set to go. They even do same day. I was not too confident that the company would arrive on time but the guys heading my way called me about 15 minutes before arriving so I was home and ready. Jeff and John were polite and got my old couch out in record time (i live in a walk up!) Their rates are a bit high for the size of the truck that they have but when you can catch their specials like I did, it's a great bargain. the guys told me they have one for fridges too....might have to start some more shopping! read more

I used yelp to get quotes for clearing out my old office of 10 big cubicles and miscellaneous furniture that needed to be tossed or donated, and these folks were one of 5 companies to reply. They were the fastest to reply to my emails and provided the least expensive quote from pictures alone. By the time they arrived, the junk heap grew by at least 20%, and they were still one of the cheaper options even after the additional charges to clear new trash. The big caveat here is that this was a business, and I was expecting to pay a lot to clear out a big space in a very short window of time. The two dudes who came to disassemble the furniture and haul it out were awesome. And fast. They worked 3 hours with only one 5-minute break, despite the grueling grunt work. All in, I definitely had a great experience and I'd consider them again in a heart beat. read more

I was closing my bakery that had been open for almost 12 years, which was already difficult emotionally, but when I was unable to sell as much of the old furniture and supplies as I thought I would, I was left completely overwhelmed by the amount of junk I needed to clean out with only 2 days to do so. It was extremely easy to get an appointment, and Henny and Jose arrived on time and with a great attitude. When it was clear that I had more than would fit in one truck, they called a supervisor to have another truck come within just a couple of hours from when they finished. They were speedy and professional, and cleaned two full truck loads of junk out of 3 floors of a building in just a matter of hours. I found this company to have very good customer service and really dedicated teams on the trucks. I hope they're paid as well as they deserve to be, true pros. Casey, Frank, Sean and my true favorite who estimated my job last Friday - you know who you are even if I'm too tired to remember you by name. They could easily have packed carelessly and called for a third truck, but it was admirable how determined they were to pack all sizes, types and dimensions of items to maximize each truck load. Detritus of a business closing gone in two hours flat. Pro tip: if you've got two truckloads have them come at the sane time. Two crews pack fast. Will definitely use again for a home pickup in Brooklyn now that I know how easy it is. Sure, it costs some $, but what doesn't? They work hard at a tough job so please consider a tip. Michael M. visited the space to give me a quote. He was very helpful and I never felt any pressure. I was stressed out because it was such a large job. Michael was sympathetic and reassuring. I used this company two times in the last month. I am so impressed with it! I was cleaning out the apartment of an elderly woman who was a horder. There was a lot of JUNK!!! First off, the men who came to do the pick up were 4 (Alexis, Pure Life, Antoine and William) of the most hard working, polite, respectful, accommodating people I've come in contact. The company was very accommodating as well; as I had to reschedule two times. On one occasion, it was their fault. Their drivers were stuck at a job and would have come to my job too late. The driver (Kervin) apologized profusely and immediately offered a 10% discount. On both occasions, the men worked fast and efficiently.
