Originally from Vermont, Berzins began looking for a good location to open a brewery after attending the Siebel Institute for Brewing in 2010. He settled on a former hay field in Easthampton at the base of Mount Tom. He chose Easthampton for the city's delicious, environmentally protected water. He was also enamored with the community's friendliness and sense of welfare. Berzins adheres to the Reinheitsgebot German purity law for the majority of his beers. Per the age-old law, the beer can only be produced with four ingredients: water, hops, malt, and yeast. At first, Fort Hill only brewed lagers. More recently they have ventured into hoppier territory with the addition of IPAs. My son and I recently visited Fort Hill Brewery while we were cycling the large network of bike trails in and around Northampton. The brewery is conveniently located right alongside the spur trail section of the Manhan Rail Trail. The location had seating available outside as well as inside and was quite packed when we arrived. The draught menu that day featured about 20 different beers of varying styles. Being the hop head that I am, I decided to order a sampler flight of five IPAs. It consisted of "G-Fresh" (Grapefruit IPA), "Disco Kid" (IPA), "Fresh Pick" (NEIPA), "Checkmate Chuck" (DIPA) and "Jigsaw Jazz" (DIPA). They were all pretty good, but "G-Fresh" and "Fresh Pick" were my two favorites. My son and I grabbed a table by the brewery's small stage and we listened to the blues sensations of Wildcat O'Halloran's band while I enjoyed my beer samples. We had a nice time at Fort Hill Brewery and I would definitely stop by again!

I also had Corrupt Cranberry, this is not for everyone, but I enjoyed it. It's a seltzer beer, I've never heard of such a thing. It's very unique, a bit more watery then the average beer, but also very flavorful. The night I was here, there was live music. This is a great little brewery that I enjoyed checking out. I have to add, they charge $2.00 for beer sampling. I'm not sure how big the samples are, this might be a covid reason. This is also a dog friendly brewery.

Admission is kept low making all events affordable for the local community. The venue is supported by door donations, fundraising, and grants. Periodically Flywheel puts on large scale shows featuring acts like Fugazi and Le Tigre. Flywheel is currently on hiatus due to the renovations being performed on their relocation space in the former town hall. Their previous site featured a cafe, zine library, art gallery, and performance space. Local scenester tip: Don't call it "The Flywheel". I look forward to visiting them in their new incarnation!

Flywheel has recently been the venue for Ladyfest and benefit shows for Pioneer Valley's Zine fest, and looks forward to showcasing more local bands. It's all volunteer-run, and people are free to donate some time to help out, either with shows or at "work parties" (like the bi-weekly party for cataloguing zines) as much or as little as they can.

What's behind the Green Door?…read more Well, I remember a song from my childhood called "Green Door" -it had a honky-tonk piano sound and I kind of remember it got some radio play in the early '60s. I also remember there was a porno movie named "Behind the Green Door". It was a big deal in 1972 and "starred" Marilyn Chambers -the Ivory Snow girl. Fast Forward to today. What's Behind the Green Door up in Collinsville, CT? A very nice restaurant known as the Green Door Restaurant. It's the house restaurant at Bridge Street Live - a music and entertainment venue on the Farmington River in the funky little town of Collinsville. We had dinner at the Green Door tonight and had a pretty favorable experience. We sat outside on the deck and enjoyed a pretty view of the River and enjoyed a singer and his acoustic guitar. So what kind of food might one find behind their Green Door? The menu had seven appetizers ranging from a $6 soup to an $18 Charcuterie Board, three salads ranging from $10 to $14 with a protein add-on between $8-$10 more, five sandwiches with a side for $13 or $14, six personal pizzas ($10-$15), and eight entrees ranging from $14 - $34. We shared a Hummus platter ($10) served with pita wedges, grape tomatoes, carrot and celery sticks, and broccoli florets. The hummus with Roasted Red Pepper was very good, the veggies were cold and crisp, and the pita bread was soft and warm. Not a bad value for ten bucks, but the actual amount of hummus wasn't very generous. I ordered one of the entrees - a Seared Sesame Ahi Tuna Bowl for $18. It was a big serving of six tuna slices with red quinoa & buckwheat, maybe two dozen crispy chickpeas, shaved carrots, sliced avocado, and arugula with a herb lemon dressing. The dish tasted great and was a pretty good value, considering the large serving. We also ordered a Reuben Sandwich ($14) of shaved corned beef, Thousand Island dressing, house made sauerkraut, and Fontina cheese, on Marbled Rye. The sandwich tasted great (especially the bread) but the weak link was the quantity of corned beef - not nearly enough. My Diet Coke $3 and that price speaks for itself -it was high. Our modest dinner ran around $47 (after tax) and I didn't really feel our overall value was there. Yes, the view was nice, the service was friendly, and the menu was varied. If you're attending a show at Bridge Street, it does make a lot of sense to eat here as a convenience. Otherwise, I'm not really convinced to go through that Green Door again.

The grounds are beautiful to explore, and you get to hear performances by world class musicians, while enjoying a picnic, if you wish! They always have a great lineup of classical as well as popular artists. I go regularly in the summers for concerts, and usually sit in the hall, but this time I enjoyed a wonderful concert on the lawn with my extended family. People really go all out setting up their picnics! Definitely get there a couple of hours early if you want to snag a prime and shady spot, especially if it's a popular artist. (Lawn tix are free for kids under 18!) You can bring your own food and drinks, or there are dining options on premises, and you can even order a picnic-to-go in advance online. Bring all the accoutrements to make your setup as comfy as possible - lawn chairs, picnic blankets, cooler, shade umbrella, misting fan, maybe a candelabra lol. The lawn is beautifully kept and lush & green. On this occasion we saw the powerhouse quartet of Emanuel Ax, Leonidas Kavakos, Yo-Yo Ma, and Antoine Tamestit performing an all-Beethoven program. The music was transcendent and the weather was luckily perfect, and it was a pleasurable way to spend an afternoon. Again, I stipulate arriving 1-2 hours early, more if you want time to tour the sprawling grounds properly. There will be a traffic jam leading up to the parking lot, and parking can take a while (though very organized). If the main lot is full, it might take another 5-7 minutes to walk to the gate from the parking field across the street.

We ended up spending like $22 on soda alone. * I noticed on their Facebook that they were complaining that people who were doing cornhole tournaments were bringing outside food and instead of reassessing their situation and what they're serving, they threatened to cancel the cornhole. If you served better food, people would buy it. It's not rocket science. Yours is 5/10 and there's other options out there that are cheaper and better than what you're currently offering. You don't take away the cornhole from people who are giving you any bit of business, you make it better for them.. so they want to buy it and they want to spend money and they want to eat your food. *since my teens aren't old enough to drink, there really isn't much to offer there in the way of food so we won't be coming back because there's no reason to.
