Spent memorial weekend in Martha's Vineyard and 1720 House was our choice of accommodation. This place was introduced in NY Times 36hrs and was the only option that wouldn't cost an arm and a leg. They were very nice to bend their 3 day reservation rule and allowed us to stay for two days. We paid ~ $250/night including tax. Location is good, about a 5 minute walk from the dock along main street. However, I did see some B+B's with better locations once I arrived to the island. I guess this is why you have to be 'in the know'. We stayed in the Americana Room with a private bathroom. Bathroom door opens to the hall way and the lock did not work making us a bit nervous every time we had to use the bathroom. The room had one queen size bed and a side bed. The side bed was too lumpy and uncomfortable. Breakfast is included but meh.. it's just cereal or stale bread/bagel and a few pieces of fruit. Coffee and yogurt is also on the table but they are both the weak and flavorless kind. The cleaning staff was very nice but kinda pushy with the tip. Deliberately leaving two envelopes for tip in visible areas. All in all, it was ok because I got to experience a 'traditional american B+B' but I wouldn't go here again unless I'm in a pinch. read more

Abby of 1720 House has questionable ethics. I made a reservation by phone for my 82 year old mother. Abby wouldn't commit to telling me which room she would be booked into. I asked her if she could stay in a particular first floor room and the reply was, "No, no, no!" I said she's 82 and has trouble with stairs. She said she was going to be on the second floor and that there were "just a few stairs." Unfortunately, I had already paid, assuming she would care about an 82 year old person. Boy, was I wrong. She stated several times that the reservation was not changeable or able to be canceled. I made the mistake of paying before I found out which room she would be booked into. Never having been there, I took her word for it, thinking a few was a few. There are no photos on the site of the staircase. As it turns out, it is a full flight of stairs with treacherously uneven floors covered in old carpet. Inside the front door is an old, bunches up cotton rug on top of an antique wool rug. When we pulled up to the house, Abby was outside speaking with someone. She told us there were keys on the hall table. She didn't show my mother to her room, we had to find it on our own. In addition, one afternoon, I went to make a cup of tea for my mother and found the cups and creamers to be dirty inside. No matter, there was no milk or cream to be had. I cleaned out a cup and made some tea. The last day of my mother's reservation, she went downstairs to the dining room on time, (there is a strict one hour breakfast service policy,) to find no coffee, no bread for toast. Some yogurt and blueberries were available. We understood there was an abbreviated breakfast due to Covid but coffee and toast were served every morning. It seems my mother was the last to leave and so no coffee had been made - because, why exactly? What a sour taste in our mouths, like the milk that curdled in my mothers coffee on Wednesday. The 1720 is a beautiful, historic house located at a very convenient place near downtown Vineyards Haven. Its about 5 min of a walk to the ferry, and is surrounded by stores, shops, and restaurants. The yard is beautiful, accommodations are great and personalized, beds are warm and cozy. The staff is warm, attentive, friendly and professional. It's also well heated in the winter. Highly recommend to anyone who's looking for a terrific experience at Vineyard! read more

We planned to stay at historic bed-and-breakfasts as we traveled from Newport, RI to Middlebury, VT What attracted my wife and I to 1720 House was the initial image of a lovely white building with black accents. When we arrived, we knew we'd made an excellent choice. The guest room - Americana - was spacious and airy, with a lovely view of the side garden. We were especially grateful for the cups of hot tea that we were offered, as the ferry crossing had been quite wet and windy! The next day brought clearer skies, still windy, and a much-welcomed breakfast. Exploring the Vineyard, even mid-week in February, set the bar for our continuing journey up the coast. read more

Let's start with the positives: 1) Location. Short walk to downtown VH. Even though nothing happens in VH and you really want to be in Edgartown or Oak Bluffs, I can't hold that against 1720. +1 2) Price. The price was relatively low compared to other B and B's. +2 3) The breakfasts are exceptional. +2 Now with the concerns: 1) If you book on Travelocity call 1720 first and ask how much will be billed to your credit card and when. Very non transparent billing. -1 2) I recognize that running a business like this is a great deal of work and setting the price point and balancing with needs is difficult. However, when 4 days have gone by and no one has cleaned the bathroom, your room, or changed out your towels (even after saying that you would), something is not happening that should be, especially when there are only 5 rooms. -4 3) You hear every creak when people walk. While the charm is definitely there in terms of it being aged and quaint, some updating wouldn't hurt. -2 Overall rating -2 read more

Just got home from one week stay at the beautiful, historic 1720 house. We sat outside often to enjoy the serenely landscaped grounds. Accommodations very clean and cozy. Great shower, very comfortable bed, great room A/C. The staff was attentive, kind, Island knowledgeable , and professional. 5 minute walk from Main St shops and restaurants. 3 minute walk from public beach. The most stress free , relaxed vacation we have ever had. We are already looking forward to returning next summer for a longer stay. The fire alarm went off 2 times in the middle of the night. No one came to turn off. Myfriend found the key on the hall and did it herself. We love quaint and charming but didnt know the mattresses would be as old as the house. It was disgusting. The fire alarm went off the next morning again they had to come in while we were there to fix after telling them it went off last night 2 times. When discussing the issue and lack of sleep the next morning we were given a yeah, sorry about that. To pay $350 for this to happen is ridiculous. We were there for 1 night from Georgia, and I guess we are used to Southern hospitality. Find somewhere else, I looked online and there were many more places that we should have stayed that were a lot less expensive as well. We spoke with Abby, the owner/manager and she refused to discuss a refund. read more

We loved staying at The 1720 House. It is very close to the ferry in Vineyard Haven, and the house is beautiful and peaceful. We stayed for a week at the Garden Room, which was very pretty, the bed was comfortable, and the room had every amenity we might have possibly needed. The breakfast was great (included yogurt, fruit and local bread) and the setting gorgeous. You will feel like you traveled back in time in this lovely house. We met the innkeeper Abby, who is the nicest person, she helped us a lot during our stay and suggested great places for us to visit. Overall a great experience that we truly recommend. read more

I stayed overnight at the inn, in the Garden Room. It wasn't great. Especially for $279, including taxes. It was a very small room, without a window that opened, so it was hot and stuffy. The AC in the window was loud and smelled funny, so I didn't use it. The wall to wall carpet was really dirty and was covered with a throw rug (that didn't smell very good when I was doing yoga and got a little too close). The bed was lumpy and uncomfortable. The pillows were completely flat. There was a notice on the bed saying not to put your luggage there and another note saying patrons were expected to tip - all in all, on the bossy side for me. Breakfast wasn't anything cooked or particularly good. The location was great - an easy walk to the center of Vineyard Haven and very pretty neighborhood. Stayed here 2 nights, I have never been more ready to leave a place then I was today from this B&B. The bed in my room the Americana is sooooo short. I couldn't lay straight because the bed frame was so small. I'm 6'3" but still the bed was tiny!. The house is old and wood so you can hear exactly what everyone in the house is doing at any given moment, so scratch off being romantic with your significant other, unless your a voyerist lol. Next they provide a continental breakfast of bananas and cereal. In my mind the point of booking a B&B is having a good breakfast! That's the reason these places charge so much in the first place. So even though we stayed at a bed and breakfast we never had breakfast there because we are not cereal eaters. Next one of the inkeepers was very odd, just gave the creepy vibe all the time. Myself and another guest was watching the finals downstairs in the common area and she came by and had a concerned look and said is everything alright here???? The gentleman I was with looked back at me and said, she is pretty wierd?! Lastly I ran out of clothes, (my fault) so I asked the inn keeper could I use the laundry facilities. She said No! I paused waiting maybe for her to say something maybe perhaps a recommendation of where I can take them, but nothing just a blank stare back at me... finally I ask her where could I do some laundry and she said uhhhh, the airport???? Really. Horrible place to stay. Look into the boutique hotels in Edgar town. Light years ahead of this place. read more

DO NOT RESERVE HERE - FALSE ADVERTISING! I made a reservation at this hotel as the room was listed in Edgartown. Abby responded and accepted my reservation but said the location was actually in Vineyard Haven. When I expressed that was disappointing as I made the reservation under the impression we were in a different location, I asked if she would cancel the reservation. She said she could not and that I would love it there. I called her to ask her again as it was literally one hour from when I made the reservation - she said she was in a meeting and couldn't talk. Terrible service and policy. This particular room wasn't advertised as having a shared bath and was in a completely different part of the island. read more

We stayed two nights at the 1720 House in Vineyard Haven at the peak of the summer. Here are the positives: location - right in town, inexpensive relative to other hotels/inns, friendly guests. Cons: my credit card was immediately charged after booking (booked through 3rd party site) when the site clearly states that your card will be charged within 2 weeks of your arrival, not immediately. Was overcharged and had to call for a refund (which was refunded after I brought the overcharge to their attention.) finishes in home need some updating, basic breakfast (yogurt, toast and cereal, fresh fruit was a nice touch) saggy bed. Would I go back? Maybe if there wasn't any other options. read more

The owner provides the worse customer service possible. She is very rude. Her policies are not clearly explained on her website. I tried to book a room and stay there with my wife and child. Nowhere does it explain a 2 to a room limit on booking.com or her website. When I try to call and resolve things, she refuses to pick up my calls. I had to use a different number, then she picked up. She would not refund my money for a simple misunderstanding the day after I made the reservation. read more

Stayed here as part of a group. The house manager meant well, but came off as overwhelming and slightly intrusive. She assigned the rooms before we arrived and we weren't even able to decide for ourselves. She also pushed us about cleaning the rooms when some of us didn't want it. The breakfast was nothing special...yogurt, toast, fruit. The bathroom shower for the Brown room was so small only a very tiny person could fit in it. There are not enough electrical outlets in the rooms. I'm giving it 3 stars because it was quiet and the ac worked. read more

I feel like the owner ripped me off for $279. My wife and I arrived at 6:30 pm on Monday night for our reservation. We were informed by a pleasant staff person that our reservation was for the next night, the Tuesday. My mistake. I asked if there was a room available that night. Yes was the response. I offered to pay the difference, but the staffer declined. 20 minutes later when we are in our room, the staffer knocks. Abby, the owner, says that we have to pay the price difference, $70. I said fine. The next morning, after a most ordinary and disappointing breakfast, the staffer calls me in to a private room. Abby, who is not there, says we have to pay for the Tuesday night too, another $279. I get on the phone with Abby and explain that we arrived at the Inn at 6:30 pm the prior night and no one else would have rented the room. I said it twice. No denial. I said she was made whole for my mistake plus she made another $70. I did not matter, said the stern Abby. She is charging me the $279 for the second night, even though I said we could not stay. This pretty much ruined our day at Martha's Vineyard. Plus, Abby told us as we were leaving. If she had said it the prior night, I would not have wanted to remain the night and would have looked elsewhere. Abby will say she has a legal right to charge us. OK. But she is responsible for her poor behavior. I have asked about a dozen family and friends and they all feel outraged. Here are some of the responses: "Mean-spirited." "What a jerk". "Makes me wonder why she is in the hospitality business." "Christian, I know you told me an hour ago about that innkeeper, but I am still mad about it."
