This lovely inn is in a perfect location just a bit out of town. We had easy access to the town without being in the crowds, and also could bike out of town without hitting the cobblestone roads. We also had access to the Breeze restaurant close by and easy walking access to the beaches near the harbor. The Carlise is immaculately clean and well decorated. It had a very comfortable living area and dining area as well as a gas firepit and plenty of seating outside. There were also places to safely store our bikes. Rooms are spacious, very pretty, and the bed was amazingly comfortable. The in-room wine refrigerator got plenty of use. The owner of the inn was very knowledgable and helpful, and also an accomplished woman and great conversationalist. We would definitely return to the Carlise. read more

Terrible customer service. I accidentally double booked a room at the Carlisle. I booked on a Monday morning at 11 am. I realized my error at 6:00 pm and called them and told them that I made a mistake and could they please cancel the reservation as I had already booked at another Inn. Cute inn, great location! Must be able to go up lots of stairs to stay here. We enjoyed our stay at the inn and the fact that we chose a king room with our own spacious bathroom. It's very old and creaky, so I would definitely recommend a room on the top floor, although the stairs are tight so getting luggage up is tricky. The breakfast was a nice touch. Keurig coffee all-day. Cookies at night. Service was friendly and attentive. My one BIG complaint is the lack of blackout curtains. It was painful to be woken up with the sun every morning. They should offer masks, if they aren't going to add these. read more

My husband and I stayed at Carlisle House last month on a 25th anniversary vacation. We booked our trip 5 weeks in advance and were surprised by the cost ($759/night) considering it was mid-week and no longer high-season (it was late September). Before booking, I did call to speak with the owner about the price and was assured that the rate was correct and unchangeable for that time of year. As we had already taken time off, we could not adjust the dates of our trip so we went ahead with the stay. The inn itself is fine and the support staff were lovely but my caution is about the pricing policy. The owner was out of the country during our stay so I waited until she returned to address this issue with her by email. I was then told that "rates are based on demand", "pricing is dynamic" and "we cannot make adjustments to pricing after a stay". On our arrival and during our stay, only 2 of the 13 rooms were booked (so much for "demand"). On our final night there, 3 more rooms became occupied, 2 of them close to 11pm during what the inn calls "quiet hours" (very noisy in a 250+ year old house), but checking the website that night, we could see that rooms just like ours had dropped over $200 in price (however, not for us). By 3 days after our stay the room was $324/night and within 2 weeks it listed for just $249/night (less than 1/3 of our cost). The inn was fine but not what I would have expected for $759/night. The continental breakfast is similar to what you might get in a chain hotel, pre-packaged as I learned when I had an allergen-related question. We've traveled many, many times for our anniversary...... sometimes arriving to chocolates and a card, a small vase of flowers, or even a small bottle of champagne with 2 flutes. This was the first time there has been no acknowledgement and for our 25th anniversary, no less (and yes, the owner was aware). read more

Our journey to Nantucket was fraught with delays and a late arrival minus our luggage. But the moment we entered the inn, we felt welcome and at home! Heather, the inn keeper, was expecting us as a late check in, and was very gracious and warm during our pre-arrival contact. An envelope with our key and receipt were waiting for us when we got to the inn. The room was lovely, quaint, clean and private - knowing that the inn was built before 1800, we were prepared for the small bathroom in our room - but any truly historic building will have some quirks, and a true history fan won't be surprised at this. I snuck down our first morning and made two cups of coffee for us and brought it back upstairs. Heather provides coffee and tea any time and breakfasts are made on the weekends. The inn is decorated with period pieces, has waive plank original flooring, plush padded carpet runners adorn the stairs and hallways. An added bonus? Two of the paintings in the parlor are of Heather's ancestors. I truly feel like a guest rather than a customer! read more

Awesome location! I stayed in the inn's small room (Polpis) because I was visiting solo and am fine with a shared bathroom. I would definitely stay here again as there was plenty of space to relax both inside and outside the house. Breakfast exceeded expectations for a continental breakfast, coffee was good and available 24/7 and while my waistline could have done without the cookies, they made the inn smell amazing each afternoon. If you're biking (which I highly recommend on Nantucket - rent a bike!), this location is great because it's right where the cobblestones end and asphalt begins so you can leave town the back way and avoid the super bumpy cobblestones. You can also walk to at least one beach from this location and the island shuttles stop nearby. read more

Stunning! This inn is fresh, clean, and welcoming! The staff: friendly, thoughtful, and thorough! The pictures don't show a beautiful renovation with updated decor and furnishings. Our bedroom was BIG! With a completely sleek new bathroom. The gardens have outdoor tables for breakfast and drinks, and lots of semi private areas to relax alone if you want. There is an awesome fire pit that we sat at one night and mingled with other guests while making s'mores....it was a trip highlight as we stay up late talking and laughing. The innkeeper, Jeneane, even joined us for a bit and told us great stories about the island's history. She was fascinating and funny! We walked to dinner and shopping easily, and rented bikes to get us to further flung places. Jeneane pointed us toward remote beaches and sandwich shops for our sunny beach days....it was a truly wonderful get away for 4 days...didn't want to leave. We have been visiting the Carlisle House Inn for some time. The owner is so friendly and helpful. Every time we visit she has a new painting or sculpture relative to Nantucket. All the rooms are uniques and special. I would highly suggest that you book a room. You will love it. read more

Took the Brant Point room at the Carlyle House, the "best" room according to the innkeeper, since it had a private bath. While the inn itself is a pretty basic selection for B&Bs on the island with a convenient location, and the room was spacious, the private bath left way too much to be desired. While functional, the shower/tub hardly looked like something you wanted to use (see photo) even by "casual" summer beach house standards. Some of the other inn amenities were not working - the ice machine had not been making ice "for some time" and the computer for accessing the internet "was having a problem with the mouse." These last two points were minor in comparison to the bathroom. Disappointing for about $330 / night. read more

We had a great stay at the Carlisle House Inn recently - Nov 2012. The inn is on a nice quiet street, perfect location, easy walk to ferry, beach, lighthouse, museum, and restaurants. Reasonable off season rates. Breakfast wasn't anything especially unique, but a nice spread that was very satisfying. I chose the Brant Point room - its pluses are that its on the first floor and it has a working fire place. The minuses are a smaller bathroom and a queen sized bed, rather than a king. This room is adjacent to the breakfast porch, which initially seemed like it could be noisy, but that wasn't an issue at all. In fact, its a very quiet/ low key inn. We hardly saw anyone, which was kind of nice. We chatted with the friendly innkeeper and she was helpful when we learned that the fast ferry was on windhold. read more

Is location, setting, history, cleanliness, or romance your priority for this trip? This place may not be the best at any one of these...although I'm sure some would argue that it may hold top rank in any of these categories. But if you're looking for a place with the best combination of these desirable features, I'm not sure how you would find better. Walking distance to downtown shops, restaurants, and bars...check. Quaint old town, narrow stone streets and brick sidewalks...check. Pre-USA home with possible connections including Ben Franklin's Mother and Moby Dick's Herman Melville, among others, set in an original Whaling Village, near the Whaling Museum...check. Recent and ongoing remodeling that brings honor to the history of the home, old town, and island, while giving it the tidiness of modern features...check. We found all of the above available in Sconset; one of the wonderful suites with an operating fireplace and adjacent sitting room that my wife and I spent our evening time enjoying. How could we not highly recommend this place, except to risk jeopardizing its availability to us when we return. read more

My new husband and I stayed here during Christmas Stroll weekend for our honeymoon. I was very happy to be directed there by the Nantucket Chamber of Commerce; and lucky to find a lovely home within walking distance of town (because of a last-minute cancellation). The innkeeper is accomplished, very welcoming and helpful. Our room (after the Christmas Stroll group left, and we were moved) was PERFECT for a honeymoon suite. There was a fireplace and sitting room, all was comfortable and cozy, and it was easy to find everything we needed and places we wanted to visit! The first 2 nights were, admittedly, quite expensive and in a tiny room - but we had, after all, found one of the last rooms on the island before things "closed down" for the winter. So it was to be expected. Moreover, it was made up for after we were moved. The suite was absolutely perfect. Breakfast is light but fine; wine and cheese in the evening gives you a chance to meet fellow guests in the pretty breakfast room. All good! So - if you have a choice, be careful to request one of the nicer rooms or suites, and you wil be very happy staying here. We had a wonderful visit. read more

We have always rented on Nantucket. This was our first B and B experience. It was delightful. The location is perfect. Heather, our host was easy-going and helpful. Enjoyed that she has written several children's books set on island. This was a trip for us to reconnect with Nantucket. To set our clocks to Nantucket Time. -- slower and much more relaxed than the mainland and home. Carlisle House helped set the clocks. My husband and I stayed here for the second time this summer- the first was for our honeymoon two years ago. When we returned this summer for our Anniversary, Heather, the owner, sent up a complimentary bottle of champagne to our room with a note welcoming us back- what a thoughtful touch! The price is decent for Nantucket. The location is great- walking distance to the downtown area, and just around the corner from a major bus stop. There is a complimentary breakfast each morning with homemade baked goods (the popovers are amazing!), fresh fruit, and lots more. We will definitely stay there again the next time we're in Nantucket. read more

I stayed here in the Madaket Suite for Figawi weekend with a friend and we loved it! The suite's bathroom was just renovated, and it made a huge difference. The brand new marble walk-in shower was an awesome surprise. The location is perfect, as it is a short walk from town and getting cabs (especially during MDW) is a bit tricky on the island. Heather was a great host and was very accommodating - she even made freshly baked cookies one afternoon! The breakfast was good and had a nice variety, especially given that it was included in the rate of the room. We will definitely stay here next year! read more

We stayed in the Nantucket Suite this weekend and found the hotel and the room it to be very average - especially for $650/night. Upon arriving at the hotel on Friday at 5pm, our room was not ready and we had to go into town to kill time while they prepared the room. Then, the outdoor sitting area with fireplace where some people gather in the evening was directly next to the room so unless we put headphones on, we felt like we were essentially in the middle of everyone's conversation. Another annoyance was that they were doing construction directly on top of our room (which they did not disclose to us in advance) so we had to listen to them banging all day. The pull out sofa was terrible and uncomfortable and it was a stretch for them when we asked for 2 extra pillows and a blanket (although they were able to get them.) Lastly, on Sunday, they called us at noon saying there was an 11am check-out -which they never disclosed, and was not obvious given our 5pm arrival on Friday-and accused us of sneaking an extra child in the room in order to charge us even more than the overpriced $650 that we had already paid. All in all, if you are desperately in need of a place to stay, this would be fine given it's close proximity to town--but not for a penny more than $250/night. This is definitely not one of the nicer properties in Nantucket. read more

This is a nice inn, in walking distance to everywhere. We had a small room under the eaves. Our bathroom had a step going in, and we had to keep the light on at night because the only light switch was further in the room and also so we wouldn't trip. The room was cozy. The inn has a nice garden that we ate breakfast in one day. Breakfast consisted of instant oatmeal, homemade breads, cut up fruit, lackluster o.j., and yogurt. It would be helpful if there were more options for non-dairy people. read more

Stayed here for two nights for a getaway mini vacation. Very clean and the innkeeper was very friendly. The location was convenient, a short walk from the main area. It is one of the cheaper inns in Nantucket. The downfalls it had were that there wasn't cable; only local channels. I know that TV may not be important on a vacation but there's not much to do in Nantucket after 8 pm when the shops start to close. There's only so much news and weather you can watch. Their website only says they have TV's, not cable but this is the only hotel/inn I've ever been to that doesn't have basic cable. There are a couple of board games guests can use. While I was there, a fuse blew from too many guests using air conditioners at one time. The electricity should be up to code better. The breakfast was alright, fresh fruit and a variety of baked goods, not the best I've had but not the worse either. read more

Stayed at the Carlisle recently with my wife. We stayed in the Cisco room. The inn in general was wonderful and everything you would expect from a quaint Nantucket B&B. The location leaves little to desire - close to town without being in the middle of the summer mayhem. The shower stall in our room was a bit small to say the least, if that could be an issue for you, you might wish to look for one of the rooms with a full bath. And, as commented by other guests, the television program offering is very limited, making late night tv watching a challenge. Heather was sweet and always willing to provide a kind welcome or assistance. The inn was impeccably clean and well maintained by the staff. It was truly the charming & romantic getaway I was hoping to provide my wife on her first visit to the island. read more

Heather Sheldon, the inn's very personable and attentive owner and keeper, greeted me in the colorfully decorated reception of the inn about a half hour before check-n time. The reception adjoins a tastefully decorated and comfy living room/salon, on the other side of which is my favorite space in the house--the sunroom. It exudes light and warmth and is a perfect place to sit and read or work, or simply gaze out at the passers-by on N. Water Street and listen to the birds. Breakfast included a homemade pumpkin bread, which was really more of a cake, and several varieties of the island's fresh bread, including cranberry-nut, and muffins. Tea and coffee are available 24/24. The rooms and guest hallways are comfortable, clean, and well-tended, decorated with period throw rugs, antique art and antique furniture and wall hangings (including a gorgeous grandfather clock in the salon). A great location, great value, and truly welcoming place to spend a weekend or a week on Nantucket. read more

The breakfast is included and always freshly made and satisfying. There is a Kuerig coffee maker available to guests 24hrs/day which is a nice touch. Just got back from staying at The Carlisle House Inn & we still love it! We've been to Nantucket many times & we always love staying there - whatever the season. The Inn is a perfect example of a preserved whale captains home -elegant & still quaint. Heather, the Inn Keeper, is attentive, helpful, & friendly -she makes the best homemade breakfast goodies! This time we stayed in the Brant Point room -the fireplace was such a plus & added to the coziness of the room, especially in February.
