This was quite the surprise! We were just traveling through the area when we stopped for a late lunch. The food was REALLY good! Like as in "I can't wait to go back to Tehachapi to have more. Seriously. My husband is with me on that assessment. I had the pulled pork plate and he had the brisket plate. We both chose the red chili as our side and the plates came with cornbread. The four tableside BBQ sauces were all excellent as well. Meats were tender and flavorful, the red chili hearty, tasty, every spoonful satisfying, and the cornbread was moist and just the amount of sweet. We wished we had bigger squares of it. We didn't expect this good of a meal so that was a happy surprise! We will definitely return and have already recommended Red House BBQ to friends. Came in on a Wednesday around 4pm. The restaurant is eclectic in design and has the old cafe feel. The employee which was helping the diners was a very friendly woman. She was kind and patient with us as we were not sure what to order. We ordered the two meat combo with the potato salad and fried okra with sweet potatoes. The tritip was moist and soft. The pork ribs fell off the bones. There were three bbq sauces-mild, sweet and smoky and spicy. The spicy was great. But we mixed the sweet and Smokey with the spicy....DELICIOUS. I was spending time with friends, and they wanted to come here for dinner. I haven't eaten here in so many years. For me, the smoke on the meat is too strong and upsets my stomach, so I just had ice tea while they ate. They seemed to enjoy their meals. From the food to the friendly attentive service everything was 5 stars for me. I took a drive down to Tehachapi just because it was a beautiful day out. After doing a quick Yelp search i found Red House BBQ. From the being to end the whole experience was great, we were greeted promptly and sat down just as fast. We opted to sit outside since it was a beautiful day with great weather. The patio and outside seating is huge, the inside is a bit smaller but still has plenty of seating and it's nice I love the decor. I went with the Tri Tip sandwich and added hot-links which was a great choice I also got a side of fries. The Tri Tip was well seasoned it had the crack peppercorn taste that I personally love. Served on a soft Brioche bun I believe. They give you 3 bbq sauces on the side to choose from Sweet and mild , mild and spicy all three were delicious. My wife and daughter went with the pulled pork sandwich which I tried an it was delicious,especially the little pieces of Bark. My wife had a side of Mac and cheese and my daughter a side salad. They said the Mac and cheese was delicious and so was the side salad it was fresh. They do have a small bar nothing big and offer beer,wine and some mixed drinks. Overall it was great experience and I say even better BBQ than most of the spots I've tried in Bakersfield. It's a shame it's about 45 mins away but I'll be definitely making the trip back soon to try something else on the menu. read more

Visiting the area from out of town we wanted to try many of the local cuisines. This place was recommended due to its popularity among the locals. The food is delicious. All of it. Pulled pork, Mac n cheese, sliced Tri-tip. Very fresh and tasty, and large portions on the plate. The service was horrendous. It started with walking in and the waitress said "wait and have a seat". Wait and sit where? There was no easily identified waiting area. All the tables were full. Oh...across the room on the one empty seat at the bar. Glad I spotted it. We placed an order for onion rings as an appetizer while we reviewed the menu. Several minutes later we placed our entree order. Shortly after that our entrees came out, no appetizer. Five minutes after our entree arrived the appetizer showed up. I wanted my water refilled but we didn't see our waitress for 15mins, finally having to flag down another waitress to assist. Later I asked the manager to explain how the appetizer showed up long after our entrees, even though I placed the appetizer order first. She spoke so fast with a strong non-American accent that she was difficult to understand. I asked her to slow down because I didn't understand her, yet she continued to talk fast with her thick accent that I could only pick up bits and pieces. Something about fried food taking longer to cook than the already-prepared meat. I told her the service was disappointing. She said "okay" and told her waitress to fill my glass. And that was the end of the visit. I don't know who owns the place, but we did not receive a positive customer service experience, rather just getting lots of broken excuses. 2 stars for the food. We came here for a late lunch on Wednesday. And I assumed it would be pretty quiet but it was packed. We did have to wait a while but once we got seated we were served right away. My boys got the kids pulled chicken sandwich, my mom got the tri tip sandwich with green coleslaw and I got the pulled pork sandwich with okra as the side. I loved all of the food. Next time I come here though I may ask for the meat without the bread. It just gets soggy from all the delicious sauce. The okra was fire. read more

I'm from Los Angeles, CA, born and raised. My foster dad was a Soul food chef and pltmaster from Louisiana. I cook on the side (tri-tip, steak, salmon, etc). The BBQ here is amazing! The servers (whom I believe were mother and daughter) whose names I didn't get were extremely sweet and kind. I was gonna get the beef ribs (I don't eat pork), but they were out. The daughter suggested the "Rib of the Beast". One of the best things I've ever eaten in my life! Hit the spot. This was a few hours ago and I still feel relaxed from the meal. The short rib was perfection, the cornbread was soft and sweet, the mac n' cheese was cheesy, and the yams brought back good memories. This is the best restaurant in Tehachapi. One of the better BBQ joints I've visited. Upon entering you feel welcomed as the employees greet you and genuinely appear to happy at work. This is definitely a family restaurant not a white table cloth joint. They have a large selection of bbq (chicken- pork - baby back ribs - beef ribs to name a few). Extremely busy when we went tonight, not a seat unfilled we waited for about 20 minutes to be seated outside in the patio section as there's no standing room. The restaurant itself seemed to clean as well as the restroom. The staff was very friendly, welcoming, and made sure we were taken care of. Still one of the best spots in the area for BBQ. This us my first visit since they switched to table service and it went very smoothly. There were plenty of open tables when we arrived at 5 but they were filling up quick by 6. Hubby loved his beef ribs and left quite the boneyar behind. MiL liked the catfish but wished it had a bit more seasoning though she usually likes things very salty, to be fair. I really liked the tender pork ribs and well seasoned fries. The shrimp actually had a bit too much salt for me, but they were nicely cooked. I definitely recommend a visit if you want something rustic and hearty. No plating with tweezers here! read more

Best bbq in California. The meat is so tender, juicy, and fresh. The homemade bbq sauces are packed with so much flavor. The Mac & cheese was so creamy & so addicting. I see the previous reviews, so I truly believe this was just a one-off experience. We came after the Apple Fest--it was busy, but the outside seating wasn't too crowded (though it was cold). The server told us it might take a bit to get our food; when I asked how long, she said about 30 minutes. I asked if we could at least get our appetizer first, and she said of course. Unfortunately, the appetizer came out with our entrées OVER an hour later while we sat there hungry and freezing. The food was mediocre at best. This is a small establishment, though they do have outdoor seating available, about 8 tables indoors. Very hunting lodge-esqe. Lots of mounted animals on the walls. We were say immediately and all of the staff were very friendly and accommodating. I ordered the pork belly sandwich and a side of red slaw. That pork belly is addictive. They "candy" it in a honey bourbon bbq sauce. The red slaw is vinegar based but not overly sour. Great counterpoint. My friends ordered the brisket, which was fork tender and huge beef ribs. We'd been looking forward to trying this place for awhile, and drove 45 minutes specifically just to come here. My husband had had their food for lunch at NASA where they have a popup sometimes. It's super packed inside - there's nowhere to wait, so they had us awkwardly standing in the middle of the restaurant for 10-15 minutes while waiting for our table. Once we were seated, it took some time for someone to come ask us for our drink orders, but they were brought out fairly quickly. We already knew what we wanted to order and were starving, so we ordered when she brought the drinks. After we ordered, we proceeded to wait 45 minutes for our food. No one came to the table to check on us that entire time, to ask if we needed refills or even just give us an update on our food. The table next to us came in after we'd been waiting half an hour and got their food within 5 minutes of ordering. We tried for 10 minutes to get the attention of any of the servers without success. It was like they were intentionally ignoring us. We finally got someone's attention and they said they'd be over in a minute. They came and checked on the two tables next to us and then started to run off without even looking at us, but my husband called several times and finally got her attention. He asked how much longer our food would be and she gave us a huge attitude stating they'd been busy all day, so it might take awhile. He let her know we'd already been waiting 40 minutes and that the table next to us had come in 15 minutes ago and were already eating. She got really snippy and said it depends on what you order as to how long it will take but finally said she'd check in the back. Again, with extreme attitude and looked super put out. Mine and my husband's food magically appeared in about 5 minutes after this and she looked so upset when she brought it and practically slammed it on the table. About 5 minutes after that, our son's food finally came out, then after another 5 minutes our daughter's came out. A simple "sorry you've been waiting so long, I'll check on the food" would've gone a long way rather than acting upset that we were trying to check on our food after waiting so long. The kids loved their food (they got sandwiches). My pulled pork was chewy and bland (and I agree with the review saying the bbq sauce is watery!). Loved the atmosphere in there, with all of the writing on the walls and fun tiles in the bathrooms. We had the Rib of the Beast and shared it, it was HUGE! Hadn't t been here in years but when I was in the area, I remember having had a great experience so I decided to check it out again. I was a bit confused when we arrived as I don't remember it being a sit-down place but I guess that is new. We were told to grab a seat and our server quickly came to take our order. Two drinks and two sandwiches- pulled pork and pastrami. The food came pretty quick for how busy it was but we had to remind the server that we still needed our drinks. Pulled pork sandwich had lots of burnt pieces and was very greasy. The coleslaw was almost non-existent so I can't judge on the flavor. The "spicy' sauce on the table was not spicy at all, and had more of a smokey flavor than anything. For my partner's pastrami, the menu said "choice of bread" yet we were not asked about the bread preference. The pastrami itself was nothing special and the tiny bread it came in was comical as it resembled a hot dog bun. I don't think the small bag of potato chips that came with each sandwich justified the price. We never got a drink refill and were quickly ushered out. They have a 3% fee for using card and 3% "discount" for using cash. I happened to have a $100 bill in my wallet so I used that to pay, yet when my change was returned, I was $28 short as the server returned the total amount of the meal as the change and not the change amount itself! The mistake was quickly fixed and they apologized. The restaurant itself is messy and cluttered but I guess that's the vibe they're going for. Restrooms were clean and maintained. I did see a "help wanted" sign in the front so maybe things will turn around when they get said help. read more

Our journey home through the Mohave desert took longer than expected. Unable to find a decent looking place to eat in the town of Mohave, we decided to press on into the hills and take our chances in Tehachapi. Our efforts were rewarded with maybe the best BBQ in southern California. Brisket that literally melts away in your mouth. Home made pastrami that rivals the best Jewish deli's in New York. Perfectly fried catfish and chicken. All beers on tap were brewed at the local brewery and were phenomenal. The staff were amazingly attentive without being overbearing, and even the owner came out to chat it up with her guests. Came here for the first time with my family and my toddlers to check out their barbecue. We didn't eat much and put the leftovers to go. So I saved some of their watered down "SWEET N SMOKY" Sauce with our to go boxes and a RUDE OLD MAN came over to tell us that they charge $4 for the sauce. My husband apologized and told him we didnt know and what the man did was he ordered the cash registrar to hand us another $4 charge for the sauce and thats when we got up and told them we are leaving the sauce they can have it. It was even nothing compared to Lucille's BBQ SAUCE. Not only that he humiliated us, I aready paid ahead and even left a tip on top of their 3% credit card charge. For those first timers who are looking to go to this place, their BBQ is dry. And bland. So you will need to pour over a hella their watered down bbq sauces to finish it. And for the old man with the long white hair and beard standing at the alcohol counter, you probably own or manage the store, yeah you can have all the sauce at your place we are never coming back or even recommend people to go there and be treated the way you treated us. Great BBQ! Found this place while visiting Tehachapi and the food was excellent. The sliced brisket plate was delicious. The meat was so tender and juicy. We also ordered the beef ribs. They came with mashed bourbon yams and cornbread. The ribs were a bit on the dry side... so the consistency was more like beef jerky. Not enjoyable but tasty. I would have preferred the meat to be juicy and tender like the brisket. We also tasted the pulled pork sandwich. The pork was delicious and tender. You must try the mac-n-cheese. It was amazing and yummy. It was gooey and so tasty with a hint of smoke- we ordered a second side of it!! The service was good, friendly and quick. The place is cute and definitely has a country and outdoor set feel to it. The place is very rustic and charming. We did notice exposed insulation way up in the ceiling so they may want to take care of that. Just sayin'! The bathroom was the coolest place in the restaurant; the everywhere else it was not cool but bearable.
