DOODLE OWNERS BEWARE...STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS PLACE We brought our beautiful 1 year old Cavapoo for a bath and grooming. As the personal contact was limited due to Covid-19, we spoke to the groomer over the phone and even provided a photo of the cut. This was not the first time he had been groomed, but it was the first time that we used this place. After a couple of hours we got a call and the groomer said she would need to trim his coat shorter because he had some matting. What she didn't say was that she was planning on shaving his entire body. We didn't even recognize our dog when we picked him up. Our new pup, Molly, had her first visit to 17th street Dog Spaw this morning and we could not be happier with the results! We've only had our mini Goldendoodle rescue since September (2022) and at the recommendation of a few Facebook friends, last month I took Molly to another groomer (also on 17th street) - they were OK but she hardly looked like she'd been groomed and when we brought her home she was shaking her head from water in her ears (which led to an ear infection and expensive vet visit). I checked out 17th Street Dog Spaw online (because they are close to where we live) and took a chance and I could not be happier with the results! Molly looks so cute and fluffy in her new "do" with Christmas bows on her ears and an excellent trim. Plus when I mentioned my concern about water in her ears, Annie (the groomer and owner of Dog Spaw) told me that she always puts cotton in ears before a bath (something I know the first groomer did not do, because I watched them bathe her). And when it was time to pay I discovered that Dog Spaw charged much less than the first groomer! Needless to say, we will be bringing her back to Annie and Dog Spaw! read more

DONT BRING YOUR PRECIOUS DOG TO THIS SHOP! LITTLE BISON/SHITZU ATTACKED BY OTHER DOGS NOT CONTAINED!!!! PLEASE READ! My mother came here with her dog, Maggie and handed her dog to the owner. There were 4 other dogs not properly contained including one PITBULL! While the shop owner was holding Maggie, all 4 dogs attacked her as her legs were dangling in the air by the shop owner. The shop owner kicked the dogs and tried to get them to back off. They rushed her to the vet and Maggie was treated for her injures. My mother was scheduled to retire and move to Peru the next day with her dog. As a result she had to reschedule her flight and needed to stay a few weeks longer due to the fragile state of Maggie. She lost the cost of her flight ($700) and incurred new fees of $1400 for another plane ticket and rent. The shop owner did pay for the vet but when asked if she could help with the other expenses she refused. My mother asked her if her insurance could help, and she flipped out and became harshly rude! My mother was deeply saddened by her reaction. She had been a loyal customer for 3 years. She considered the shop owner to be a friend. My mom cried. We tried so many things and it's been a month and he still suffers from flees. I called and made an appointment for him. The person who answered the phone was very helpful and advised me of in home care of potential flees roaming in my carpet. When I dropped off Jeter the owner i believe greeted me and Jeter it made me feel welcomed and trusting. Jeter is now flew free and has a cute hair cute. His fur feels so soft. We took our dog to this groomer on a Saturday morning. There where 2 women working there that day. When we walked in one lady was yelling at a Black lab in a cage to "SHUT UP!" The dog was just curious about another dog being groomed right in front of him. When we approached the counter, the other woman came up to our dog and immediately hunched over him and put her hand out. At this point my boyfriend was concerned about leaving the dog there because of the way she handled the situation. She took him in the back and we walked out. We took about 2 steps out of the door and they came running out saying "He won't let us pick him up, we can't do this!" The groomer's here are obviously amateur at handling dogs. I wouldn't recommend this groomer to any person that has a dog larger than a Chihuahua. read more

The woman who runs this store is nice, so 17th Street Dog Spaw has that going for it. What doesn't it have going for it? Good pet grooming, and that is a problem for a pet grooming store. We had to bring our dog back to the store after realizing what a terrible job she had done. And even after round two, and about 8 hours, our dog still wasn't cut properly. I would agree with the earlier review that while this place may eventually get better, right now, it doesn't have the experience needed for a $50 dog haircut. read more

Love this business They are always busy but never turn down taking our little Lexi in if we need to. They are closed on Sunday and Monday The owner is very sweet and takes very good care of the dogs If you want a secure great place to groom your dog this is it. They have never injured my puppy like other places have cut her nails too short and made them bleed before I found this place and that's never happened here. Love love love it !! I brought my 7 month old retriever mix in for a bath and there were about 12 dogs running around the store uncaged my poor dog was terrified. Although she assured me all of the dogs were friendly that is just not a risk I am willing to take. She was barely able to lift my dog and he is only 25 pounds. Very nice people. We have just moved to Costa Mesa and I needed to find a new groomer I just am not willing to drive back to South County to have them groomed. I took my 2 dogs in to be groomed their cockapoo's . So the grooming is not difficult. What I ask for is my dogs to be shaved completely down my female to have her face shave like a poodle with just a small tuft of hair at the end of her snout. everything else clipped as short as possible. My male pretty much the same but to leave his go-tee to just be left alone. I didn't realize how bad it really was till I got home, Their paws were cut in different lengths. The didn't clean out the hair in their ears, and now 6 weeks later they look terrible. I won't recommend this place my suggestion is before you leave check your dogs over and make them fix them. read more

I should have just trusted my gut when I walked in and turned right around. This place has decent reviews, and I don't get it. The place was a dump! The gate to the back was broken and just hanging there, there was freshly cut dog hair all over (not just in the back) and the pens they kept dogs in were just makeshift junk. All I asked for was a simple shave and nail trim. The nails are fine, but the shave! I have never seen such an uneven, half-assed job in my life! When I paid I wanted to cry a little. My yellow labrador loves his visits to the Dog Spaw. Unlike the other reviewers, I have had nothing but positive experience here but as far as a 'haircut' my 100 lb. yellow lab really just gets washed, nails clipped, ears cleaned, etc. and they do a perfect job at a very reasonable price ($35). They do have a very unstructured atmosphere with large poodles running around but they are happy and friendly and my dog really loves his visits here and he comes back sweet smelling, soft and beautiful. read more

I hate that I have to update my review, but a few days later, my dog showed little improvement. I initially took him in for a bath, nail trim, ear cleaning, and anal gland expressing. When we got home, he looked and felt great, but the next day, his ears and belly were so itchy and he continued to scoot on the carpet, indicating his glands were still bothering him. I feel like some of the services weren't done or weren't done very well :( read more
