Born to do art, forced to write emails...I know I've been saying this a lot (especially w/all the…read moregreat businesses I've found lately), but seriously I'm so happy this place exists. ARTime BARRO is part pottery studio, part community space, and is a relaxing, chill place where you can unleash the creativity you thought was dead, where your artistic spirit gets to come out to play, if only for just a little bit of time in this crazy world. On a recent weekend, I had the opportunity to take the One-Time Class, which is a one-hour course designed for complete beginners. You get to make two pieces, one by hand at the table and one on the pottery wheel. The class size was small (just 5 people) and we got great 1:1 instruction and guidance from our knowledgeable instructor Max. I've always wanted to try the wheel and was surprised how hard it was to use it but it was such a great experience that I think everyone should try at least once. After you sculpt your pieces, you are invited to come back to hand paint (glaze) your work at no additional cost. You can also have them do a one-color glaze for you, but after I saw all the multi-colored pieces of other folks previous to me, it was no contest to decide that I wanted to color my pieces myself. You have up to 3 months to come back to glaze so it's very doable in anyone's busy LA (corporate) lifestyle. Pricing was very reasonable for such a cool bespoke experience. There are a lot of pottery painting studios (e.g. Color Me Mine) but this is awesome bc you get to make the pottery AND color it later! I've already recommended this place to countless people!

Our instructor was friendly and gave clear directions on how to mold our pieces. We each made 2 pieces, so the one hour really flew by. We had the option to come back to glaze our pieces or have the studio glaze them for us, and opted for the latter. There's a small lot behind the building, but it was full when I went. It wasn't difficult to find free street parking on a Sunday evening in this area. The pottery pieces could use a bit of extra care in handling (my wheel-thrown piece had rough edges and a random piece stuck on that wasn't there initially, and the glazing didn't look thorough on my other piece), but overall I was happy with my pieces. This was a fun experience, and worth the value!

Everything changes when you step over the threshold into the World of Barbie…read more I wouldn't say it's like you left the "real" world behind you, because the World of Barbie is every bit as real as the world outside. Maybe more real. The World of Barbie is a celebration of Women. Inside this space great effort has been exerted to keep at bay the forces that normally pit women against each other. In the World of Barbie you get to see women and girls interacting as Sisters, respecting each other, supporting each other, cheering each other on. That's really something to behold. I mean, this is California. Not just California, it's Southern California. It's Santa Monica, the actual setting for the TV series Baywatch. Even a casual observer, even a guy as clueless as me, can see it's tough to be a woman in a place with such a narrow definition of "Beauty." That's why World of Barbie is so special. The World of Barbie blasts a hole in the little box that defines what it is to be Beautiful. The World of Barbie gives all of us, men included, the space to celebrate All Women. It was a such a joy to see women interacting in this special space. In this World, all women are Barbie and treat each other with love and with utmost respect. It was fun seeing all these women addressing each other as Barbie. "Your outfit looks great, Barbie!" "Thank you, Barbie, your outfit is so pretty too!" This is a super popular event and it gets a little crowded inside. But what you don't see here is people cutting in front of each other or a constant jockeying for position. What you see is people smiling and patiently waiting their turn, often allowing someone else to go first. No one tries to rush you when you're trying to get a photo. In fact, people offer to take a photo for you so you can get your whole party in the shot. It's that atmosphere of mutual respect and courtesy that makes World of Barbie more "real" than the real world. Because here you see evidence of something real that you don't always notice in the outside world: the Sisterhood of Women. Absent the expectations of the outside world you see how women naturally relate to each other, as equals, and with genuine appreciation for what makes each woman unique. You see authenticity, diversity, inclusiveness. I think that's what I appreciated the most, the inclusivity. I loved seeing Barbies representing so many different cultures. I loved seeing Mexican Barbies, Asian Barbies, Black Barbies, and especially differently abled Barbies and Barbies in wheelchairs. They even had a Ken with vitiligo. A week after I visited World of Barbie I saw the movie. I was really happy to see the movie was just as inclusive as the World of Barbie. The movie was a lot of fun, but in my opinion the World of Barbie was more fun. The World of Barbie was more fun than the movie because I got to see so many beautiful Barbies all dressed up for the event and having so much fun. It was truly like spending time in Barbie World. I loved that you were able to get the whole history on her while still having a great time. I loved seeing everyone go all out from head to toe pink, there were so many age groups I noticed as well, which to me really highlights the fact that they were trying to be inclusive. There's countless photo opportunities and not too crowded so you're def able to get the shot.

The batting cages caught our eyes through the window, but once we went inside, we discovered you could also play tennis, lacrosse, cricket, and padel. Each cage had virtual screens with scoring (think Top Golf, but with racket/paddle sports) and you can rotate between all the sports in one reserved lane. There's a bar in the back giving it a Lucky Strike-ish feel and there's also a foosball table and pool table. The two of us played a quick half hour just to try it, but could have easily played for over an hour plus and had a full-on date night here. Great place for groups, big and small, and glad to have a fun entertainment space in downtown Santa Monica!

You can switch off between each sports and absolutely no experience or skills are necessary. We were told golf will be added in the future but not sure when that will happen. There are also several arcade games, foosball table, pool table, AND skee-ball machines!! How cool is that?! The place also has a small private room and a bungalow, along with a back area with 2 bars where they also serve food. Upstairs: there's another batting cage and an area to just chill and hang out. There are a bunch of tv's throughout the place, I believe they sometime have sports/watch parties. This would be such an awesome venue to host a birthday party or work/group event. Overall: great place to hang out before or after spending time at the nearby Third Street Promenade and the Santa Monica Pier, which are both only a few minutes walk away. Friendly staff is also a plus! Parking: several public parking structures (#1-7) are located nearby that are all within about a 5-minute walk. Parking Structure #1 is probably the closest one, just down the street. About a 2-3 minute walk.

The night starts in an intimate bar setting where you get to enjoy strolling magic up close, which immediately pulls you into the experience. From there, you move into a smaller room for a pre-show performance that builds anticipation before heading into the main theater area. The setup was done incredibly well. The seating in the main show area was perfectly arranged and angled so everyone had a great view no matter their height or where they were seated. There really isn't a bad seat in the house. The overall atmosphere had a very intimate, Magic Castle-style feel that made the entire experience feel special and immersive. Every part of the night felt thoughtfully designed and added to the magic of it all. We had an amazing time and are already looking forward to going again!

The magician said he works in Disney cruises he was mostly keeping it PG. While exiting some of us were told if we wanted to see more magic to go another room. We of course were curious and went with . The room was much smaller. This time I was a bit closer to see the magic tricks that I gasp. The illusion on how we were being tricked was amusing. Not knowing what to expect my friend and I decided to stay for the evening event which was as a burlesque show. Adding the show was only 15 dollars . The ladies had an amazing performance along a live band which was quite entertaining. The hostess was extremely funny she was the best part of the burlesque show. Drinks were good only I was a little bit confused at first since the bartender showed me menu when I asked for the cocktails then when I asked for one she told me she wasn't making them but could put them in for me pointed at a guy next to her. I assumed she was putting them in since she said she could but no big deal we're waiting during intermission to add our drinks until the guy made them. One thing to add you can drink inside during both show. The difference was that during the burlesque performance there was someone inside ready to take drink orders and bring them to the seat . During the magic show you have to wait until intermission to get a drink .

I went to my first MAINopoly: Taste of Main Street in Santa Monica and already can't for next year!…read more This culinary walking event featured some of Main Street's best restaurants, bars, and local businesses stretched across quite a few blocks, so you will get your steps in, which made it such a fun way to explore the neighborhood while trying a huge variety of food and drinks. At check-in, everyone received a wristband, game board, and "MAINopoly" money to exchange for tastings at each participating location. Once you visited a stop, your game board was marked off, and completed boards could be turned in for a chance to win prizes. Some of the participating businesses included Ashland Hill, Circle Bar, HomeState, Jameson's Pub, Junior Cookies, Library Alehouse, Lula Cocina Mexicana, Michael's Santa Monica, Tavern on Main, Triple Beam Pizza, Ubatuba Acai, and many more. Every stop offered something unique, and it was a great mix of restaurants, bars, dessert spots, and wellness brands. One of the coolest additions this year was the new "Entertainment Zone" feature, where guests 21+ could sip alcoholic beverages while strolling between locations. It gave the event such a lively and social atmosphere. The event is made to be walkable. Parking was manageable with paid lots/meters and nearby street parking available (I parked in the residential for free!), and I also appreciated that the event was very kid-friendly. Overall, MAINopoly was such a fun way to spend the day eating, exploring local businesses, and enjoying the Santa Monica community. I will definitely be going again next year!
