One of my new go-to spots in DC. 1831 bar is a hidden gem tucked away on the streets near Dupont circle. If you're walking past, there's a chance that you might miss it. I stumbled across the Yelp page and wanted to check it out. I was surprised by the food and drink options as they had interesting varieties. The chili momo and mango habanero wings were to die for, I would want to stop by just for dinner! I also enjoyed the Moscow mule, I believe I overheard the bartender saying they make their ginger beer in-house. They also have DJs that come through around 9pm on weekends and some weekdays. This is a fun place to hangout and enjoy the company of amazing servers, bartenders, and other people - I've never had anything but a great experience here! read more

Perfect low key bar for an after work happy hour drink. Exactly what I wanted in a place to just pop in, sit at the bar, have a cheap drink, and not feel surrounded by pretentious DC types. This was great. Happy hour (3-7) offers beers ranging $1-3, wine $4-6, $7 margs, and I think a few other drink specials, but those options were good enough for me and I went with the wine. Service was a little slow at first, but the one bartender working was friendly and cheerful and doing her best to keep up with everyone until another two eventually showed up or came back from break. Atmosphere was really chill. I liked the dim lighting, everyone was casual and relaxed with a dj setting up in the corner, some hip hop and classic 00s rap bumping, and a steady flow of young-ish friend groups coming in for cheap beer around 5pm. I tried not to evesdrop on the couple next to me at the bar arguing, but their fight sort of added to the entertainment and general vibe. Female bartender messed up my friends drink multiple times and then out of nowhere made a very rude remark about her. We didn't even say anything to her about the mess ups. Post brunch and pre-day party, a group of friends and I stopped into 1831 for drinks and conversations. It was a very intimate bar with great service and a good atmosphere. They had great specials when we stopped in: $2 shooters, $3 beers, $5 mixed drinks. It was also pretty cool that I in the upstairs half of the bar there was an impromptu art gallery in progress. Do not go here! Service was absolutely awful. It was fully packed and no one was wearing a mask including the workers. They automatically charge 20% tip. 4 cocktails and 2 shots was a little over $100. The bartender completely forgot about our drinks and we waited for a very long time (over 30minutes). My friend ordered me another drink and I told the bartender not to make it. He 100% heard me and I said it multiple times to please not make it because I do not want it. Not only did he make it anyway, he decided to charge me the more expensive liquor without ever asking. He had a terrible attitude and was so difficult. As long as I have worked near this place, I have only stopped in as a part of bar crawls (back when I used to do them, I'm too old now) and never got to fully enjoy the place until recently. I took my coworkers there for a nice Friday happy hour, and at first we were crushed in the corner in front of the window because we were expecting a lot of people and the entire back area with the bigger tables was reserved. As soon as things started to get super cramped, the bouncer was nice enough to point out when the only bigger table in that area became available. How thoughtful! When we got there, it was already getting a little crowded, but we got service relatively quickly. But as it got more crowded, the service definitely slowed down, but I understand why. I don't think anyone had a serious issue going to the bar and flagging people down. They have a variety of drink options for their happy hour (which ends at 8:00)... and while they don't have any food specials (or much variety on food in general), it surprised me! Their calamari really caught me off guard because of how delicious it is. It's well-seasoned and the texture was just perfect --- I've had calamari that was too chewy before and this wasn't it. I decided to go with a burger as my main course, and it was a great burger! Not the best burger I've had, but way better than several other burgers I have had in town. Met a co-worker for Happy Hour & after a 10 minute stroll from the Farragut North Metro Station-Red Line, I was here. 1831 is nestled between other gathering spots on the heavily populated M Street. A few steps down & your inside a posh & vibin' lounge. We lucked up on a comfy circular leather couch in the front. There's a few small tables window side & high top tables lined against the wall heading towards the back. On the 2nd level where the restrooms are located theres booth seating & TV's. Awesome service from Tiana, who gladly ran back & forth between the bar & our table to accommodate us. We ended up sharing some of our space with a small crew of Peace Corps volunteers, who were high spirited for the extra seating & we all ended up having a good time. This was a great place for New Year's Eve until I got kicked out. I want to rate this place from 5 to 0 stars if I could. I fell down the stairs due to slippery floors and stairs because of spilled drinks. There weren't any "caution wet floor" sign and the bouncers decided immediately to kick me out without reason. 1) they didn't even ask if I was alright 2) they didn't even ask if I needed help or needed a paramedic 3) there were no caution signs due to wet floors. I could have been severely Injured and due to that, I have a terrible huge bruise on my back thigh. I have a photo to prove it. Never going back to this place, I understand everyone was drunk and having a great time, but this shouldn't justify any reason to kick anyone out based on your assumptions if the person is "drunk" or not. Went here to celebrate my friend's new accomplishment on a Friday evening. Found this place via Yelp (thanks Yelpers)! Atmosphere was real chill...def an after work spot (everyone had work bags lol). They had a few happy hour specials going...can't remember what the specials were but we had margaritas and shooters AND several bottles of wine lol. The waitress was amaze, she was working the bar and was walking around the bar area to make sure we were good. Music selection was NICE! The steps leading up to the bathroom...treacherous (at least that's how they seemed after a few drinks) lol. The highlight of my night (I had to start a new paragraph for this) was the FRIES! OMG like why would they ever make fries that taste that amazing!! I was so mad at myself for offering folks to have some before tasting them...we all fell in love!! I came here with my friends after a surprise birthday dinner for some drinks. The place was packed but some tables were still open. We were a party of 7 and were able to find a table easily. The waitress takes everyone's card and starts a tab, and you just let her know when you want to close it. Our waitress was ok, but seemed overworked and preoccupied. She didn't really check on us often. The opinioms were split, some people liked their drinks and some people didn't. We also ordered gingerale's and they were ~$4 each for a small cup. But what do you expect, it's from a bar in D.C. All in all, it was alright but not my cup of tea. Maybe if it was a little more clean... I've been to 1831 a few times now -- on bar crawl stops and during happy hour. This spot is consistently one of my favorite bars of my night! The music and energy is great; as soon as you walk in you're greeted with some deep bass bumping top 40's and throwback classics from their big speakers. It's never overly crowded so it's not too tough to find a spot at the bar or one of the high table tops. The drinks here are consistently good and moderately priced. They usually have a special going on featuring a brand of liquor for $5 or $6 (last night it was Tito's vodka for 6). Beware, the drinks are a little on the strong side, making this a perfect spot to get the night going in my opinion. During game days and bar crawls, they have themed drinks, shots, shooters, and raffles -- you can tell they want their patrons to have a good time. The waitresses move quickly and are pretty friendly and engaging, they seem to enjoy interacting with all the guests and grooving to the music along with us. Always on the hunt for a super chill bar, good music, happy hour, and food in DC!! I know I know it's hard to find.... but I luck up. Paid this place a visit on a Tuesday night because they are apart of Passport( drink benefits) and now this is officially my spot! The music was a mix of R& B / hip hop the crowd was great and the bartender was friendly. We order drinks and wings ( they have happy hour wings 7-9pm daily and 12-5 on weekends) I had the salt & Vinegar wings but was disappointed they didn't have lemon pepper!! Who doesn't have lemon pepper..... but the Salt & Vinegar was tasty and for $5 it's a win!! I was told they stay open until 3am on weekends... so this place has now been added to my list of go to spots! read more

So me and my friends leaving dinner and was heading to find a spot for drinks and good music . A gentleman outside 1831 was telling us to come down and we went and instantly they was so welcoming . It was my friend birthday and they help us celebrate to the fullest. It wasn't crowded but who needs a crowd when you get good vibes all around They had the music flowing and we danced and laughed and drink the whole night til closing . Well...it is hard to review because it is a great space with an awesome staff of strong female bartenders who are smart, cool and take care of their guests. There is a great rear section you can grab a booth, a bite to eat and have a conversation. Food: Awesome! I have had the Cesar Salad and the Hot Wings and both were delicious. Salad was HUGE. Why is it hard to review? Because a couple things make or break a weekend hot spot. 1) TERRIBLE music. I was SO SO relieved when a DJ finally arrived but then was horrified that he was just playing the same garbage mixes I had been suffering through all evening. So...yeah. The music is UNBEARABLY BAD. Came here for happy hour on a whim and I'm glad o did. The atmosphere was nice and cozy and the DJ was on point. This place is suppose to have the "best" wings in town so of course I tried the old bay wings. Although they were good, there wasn't a hot of old bay on none of the wings. My friend got the Asian wings and he said they were just ok. Regular price is $10 for the wings but at 7 they are $5. The two cocktails I had were pretty good and the wait staff were on point. This past weekend we decided to stop by again... Friday night when drinks were $8 each (as they should be in this hole in the wall) We then decided to go back Saturday night which was a MISTAKE!!! We were more than likely SCAMMED by the bartender and the 2 couples sitting at the end of the bar.... WE THOUGHT were just local friendlies but instead could be considered enemies of society, City and state! We asked for our tab and credit card back following just a total of 4 drinks (that I MADE CLEAR I DID NOT WANT MY CARD RUN AND I WANTED TO PAY CASH WHEN STARTING THE TAB ) Just after we asked for our tab and CC so I could pay cash, there was a lot of chatter between the 2 couples and the bar tender and it appeared the other couples were tabbing out as well.... still no CC and tab as we were waiting and waiting. I then asked, in more of a demanding tone, for my tab and CC, the next thing we knew the bar tender had given one of the couples my CC as one of the other couples was trying to distract my wife and I. Once we had realized what was happening, one of the couples we had been talking had my CC... they walked over and handed my CC to me with the tab and was pretending as if it was a mistake of the bartender. For 4 drinks, it was in excess of $100 at first until WE challenged the bartender on that cost. Bartender then marked it down to $70 which was still extremely high for this dump!!! Immediately I logged into my bank app to lock that card before anyone could drain my account! Our advice.... I love this bar!! I had four bars on my list to pick from this day but I'm so glad we chose this one. The ambiance is amazing, the table setups were great, the security and the wait staff were real cool. There was one wait staff that could've been a little more poised & not so loud but because she was nice and meant well who am I too take a shot at her personality. The tables are made for two people only but they will accommodate you by pushing the tables together if it's three or more people. The happy hour pricing was the best and the music and dope!! Great atmosphere, friendly service, and Courtney is just absolutely the best! This was my third visit to this restaurant and I really enjoy being here. Courtney the awesome server/bartender is a great hostess and her lively energy and positive work attitude really makes this place the great hang out spot that it is. I attended as part of the language exchange meet-up that is occasionally hosted here. On Sundays they have a special of $5 wings, what an awesome deal! I seriously regret though that I only placed one order when instead I should have ordered like at least 4, the flavor that I got was salt and vinegar and it was so delicious. The rear seating area is elevated by going up a few steps and it makes a great place for the meet-up. The restrooms were spotless and super clean, the interior is really fancy and cozy, and this is a great place to go for evening drinks. Not going to lie, I was a bit surprised at how good the food was lol when I walked in, "great food" wasn't the first thing I thought of. It has a typical bar feel. They were a bit short staffed so the people at the bar were keeping the two waitresses busy. We ordered wings (they have a $5 special, even for weekend nights) & the philly cheese steak. The music blasts overhead and of course it plays my first love, hip-hop. There are multiple giant screens against the bar. As you walk past the bar, you enter another small section that looks like it can be set up for private parties as TVs and love seats populate the area. The place gives off a classy chic lounge atmosphere. 2. Food: This was during happy hour and the drinks here are so cheap. I am talking about beers that go from $1 - $3. My bud light was $3. If you are here for the happy hour food special, this place is not for you. The chicken wings were $10 for a small basket of tiny wings. The wings were good, but the wings were extremely small. Drink specials are great here. 3. Service: Lavenia was our waitress and she was so friendly and nice. She greeted me right away as I sat down and was very attentive to our small group. She did a great job. 4. Costs: The bud light was $3 and the chicken wings were $10. Great prices for drinks, but not for the foods during happy hour. 5. The service here is really good, always checking in and asking if you want another drink.There's also some good specials and happy hour deals. I tried food here for the first time, ordering the flatbread which was great quality drunchie food that hits the spot and is also filling. Although you might miss it walking down the street because it's down some stairs, it's a great hidden gem. There's seating in the first level in high top tables or the bar, but also table seating for larger groups upstairs (also a bit more quieter). Will say the only drawback is the music can be a bit loud, but that's why I recommend the upstairs if you're there for the conversations. read more

I'm speaking to reserving a space for a happy hour event! Sean and his team were super helpful in helping me reserve space for a 40 plus person event! Unlike other bars where it impossible to get someone on the phone or with insane contracts, they were kind enough to offer a space with a simple email and a phone call. 1. The lounge area they let us use for happy hour was simply amazing. Clean, modern, and with fast service. Enough light to see each other and get around, but sufficiently dim to give it an interest bar feel. 2. Just look at the drinks menu - amazing prices and great range of options!! You can be classy with a glass of wine or 7$ margs... or go for hipster beer. 3. Location location... You don't have to go far (from the hotspots of DC) for an amazing space! I think this is a great hole-in-the-wall bar in the middle of DC. We came here on our first night in the capitol since it was near our hotel. It was partly packed at 9 p.m. and I really liked the atmosphere in the bar. Everyone was super friendly, the bartenders got to our drinks quickly, and they went above and beyond to make sure that we liked our drinks. We each ordered a handcrafted cocktail and my bf got the 1831 ($11) while I got the Captain Nemo ($10). The 1831 is made of dark rum, amaretto, peach schnapps, chambord, grenadine, and a variety of other fruit juices. The Captain Nemo is made of vodka, peach schnapps, blue curaçao, crème de cassis, pineapple, and sprite. Both drinks were unexpectedly super strong for a cocktail, and I liked my drink better! What I liked most about this bar, however, was the live DJ. He was playing some of my favorite 90s hip hop throwbacks, and it made the atmosphere even more enjoyable. If you love good hip hop music and solid drinks, I would definitely give this little bar a try when you're in DC! There are awesome HH deals and other drinks like dessert cocktails that I'm curious to try, so I know I'll be back when I'm in DC again! read more
