One of my best childhood memories. I miss the delicious barrel of dill pickles they used to have in the back! You can find the perfect present from the Cape here to bring back. Adorable country store with lovely items. The front has a lot of items for the home, including Cape Cod mementos. I went for a locally made jam, which turned out to be delicious (I'm partial to orange marmalade). A friend got some ceramic bird items. Go a little further and there are cute baby items, and then further back there's penny candy, toys, and clothing. Really nice, and varied, selection. Recommend stopping in! I like my souvenirs in food-form, and I noticed they have lots of cool local stuff, which I'll have to stop back for one day- penuche fudge (made with brown sugar instead of chocolate), and chocolates with cranberries (there was one cranberry chocolate that also had caramel, which sounded excellent). read more

I adore this store - it reminds me so much of Patina or Bibelot (Midwest shops) - a place where I could spend a lot of $$$ to pamper myself, gifts for others, or just general shopping around for new/fun ideas. A great place for tourists to pick up Cape Cod-centric or overall Massachusetts gifts. One caveat before you go - there are no public restrooms. My friend needed to go and was directed to go down the street to the public library (just a short walk away, no big deal). That ended up being another pleasant surprise as it was the nicest, coziest, warmest small town library I have ever seen. Almost as adorable as the 1856 Country Store. read more

The 1856 Country Store is a super cute place w/ a little something for everyone. Ornaments, bags, jewelry, toys, clothing, and a whole lot of Cape Cod Souvenirs. Ooo! and candy! (in baskets in the back room... lollipops, gummies, mini peanut butter cups for a nickle..) Bonus- there is a small church parking lot and playground across the street. If you visit with kids and buy them candy, they can use their sugar rush on something productive like climbing the monkey bars. A yearly stop on the Cape. This is a great place to shop for gifts, crafts, and artistic little pieces. It has the classic feel of an old mercantile store, and carries items one might not have seen for decades. My sone loves the old style sodas, including birch beer, ginger beer, ... etc. The candy displays even include old rarities like wax bottles, candy cigarettes, ..... etc. There have also been old style toys from decades past, including balsa gliders, wind up toys, puzzles, and more. read more

Most welcoming porch or most adorable? As we wound our way through the store, we went past the same old cape stuff that most gift shops had-- found an awesome selection of local jams, hilarious photo cards to give to friends/family with a sarcastic sense of humor, and then to the glorious back of the store where old fashioned toys and candy rules. Boyfriend found some candy stick that he's never able to find and nearly bought them out; I found a bunch of gifts to squirrel away for birthdays and Christmas (yes, I really do start Christmas shopping in April. Stop judging me!) and pointed out the adorable, working toy accordion that I want for birthday/Christmas. We had a blast in there, and the shop lady was super knowledgable on the area and gave us great tips when we asked about Craigville Beach. Always ask the locals! Definitely swing by-- feel like a kid again with penny candy and awesome toys. I'm just glad we came in when there weren't any kids. I placed an order online for eight items. I told them they were for gifts. Also asked if they could send a sample candy. I amazed when I received the package, not only were they packed great, they put them in pretty boxes with ribbon! I thought that was amazing in itself, and now I can give them as gifts already looking beautiful! And the little note about the sample, they also sent! Inside was a handwritten note to me. I in aww of what an amazing job they did without asking ,they took such care in putting their extra special touch into my order. Would I purchase from them again? I sure will. A+ store for sure. Fun place to visit! A quaint little store full of great home decor items, fashion accessories and of course - toys and candy! We went there three times during our visit. Prices are reasonable. We have lots of family traditions, and one of them is going to the country store (which we call the general store) we LOVE going to this store any chance we get while we are in the cape. The things at the general store are constantly kept up- never have I've seen a empty box in the country store. My mom and her brother would always go to the country store and get candy, and still today we go and get the candy's my mom would get, and we'd get candy cigarettes and joke around with our parents. I LOVE this store. The store is filled with not only cape cod souvenirs, but Massachusetts as well. The candy selection in the back of the store is amazing, and they have lots of toys and puzzles for children to look at while the adults buy some high end cape cod merchandise. With all the commercialism on Cape Cod these days, it's refreshing to go to a quiet little village such as Centerville. There isn't much to do in this town, but it is a very pleasant place with a beautiful church, nice old houses, and the 1856 Country Store, which is a landmark of sorts in the heart of the town center. The store is charming both inside and out, and while it doesn't have the huge number of items you might find in, say, Zeb's in North Conway, NH, or the Vermont Country Store in Weston, VT, it does have enough to keep most folks interested. The back room is a great place for kids, as there are all kinds of toys and candy back there. This isn't the greatest country store in New England, but it is certainly nice enough, and its location is tough to beat. read more
