I wanted to try a new coffee shop, so I ventured a bit further from campus to try 1951 Coffee Company. Even with dozens of boba and coffee shops nearby, 1951 Coffee Company was still packed with students around weekend lunchtime. I need a mid-day pick-me-up, and the honey lavender latte was calling my name. I noticed that I was charged an extra $0.25 for the to-go cup, which I suppose is good for minimizing waste but still came as a bit of a surprise on top of the nearly $8 latte. The latte was prepared within minutes, and I took my drink to-go. Sweet and creamy, the latte nicely balanced subtle lavender flavor with a hint of sweetness - without tasting overly floral. Hopefully I won't be in as much of a hurry on my next visit and can enjoy my coffee in the cute cafe. read more

Cute coffee shop with cafe classics and some fun twists as well. Full menu of espresso drinks and matcha, but not cheap. Pistachio rose latte - loved the size, and tasty matcha, but the flavoring they use veers a bit in the liqueur direction, which isn't my personal favorite. Americano is pretty mild, good for those that like a balanced coffee, medium roast. read more

Love the mission and nice menu of items! The mochi muffin was delicious, loved the texture. The strawberry lychee matcha was okay. I appreciate the barista made a heart with the foam and showed me before capping the cup. Close to campus and great additional outdoor space in the back! read more

I'm surprised I haven't wrote a review for this place. I love 1951 and it's mission behind it. Supporting refugees by employing them and giving the work experience they need to thrive in a new country, I'm here for it. I'm always greeted with a smile, never turned away. They're on Snackpass so you can order beforehand if that's your thing. You can order with the cashier or order on their one kiosk they have. Many of their drinks can be decaffeinated which is amazing. I just had the decaf mocha and it was delish, great pick me up. Great to see that they often have more than two options for gluten free pastries. Hopefully they can add more and have vegan options as well. Just like any other coffee spot that I'm familiar with they do charge extra for their non-dairy milks. They're located on Channing Way off Telegraph Ave. Go check them out, enjoy a beverage while supporting a cause. read more

Got their iced Marsala chai with almond milk and it was delicious! It's quiet inside and filled with students studying. I sat outside so I could talk. What I liked about the cafe the most was that it's a cafe with a purpose. They provide work for immigrants and provide them with skills to help them. Really love that it helps the community at large in this way. read more

This place was such a wonderful find, especially after a heavy and fulfilling meal nearby. I needed something to help me stay awake and avoid falling into a food coma, and 1951 Coffee came to the rescue with a solid cup of coffee that hit the spot. The space has a clean and modern look with plenty of seating inside and out, making it a great place to get some work done, hang out with friends, or just unwind solo. The music playing in the background was mellow and relaxing, nothing loud or distracting, just good easy-listening vibes that matched the atmosphere perfectly. The prices are very fair and the americano I ordered was smooth, strong, and clearly made with care. The staff were friendly, quick, and welcoming, which made the whole experience feel even better. I'm really glad I stumbled across this place. It feels like the kind of cafe you want to keep in your back pocket for any occasion. Whether you need a midday pick-me-up, a quiet spot to think, or a relaxed hangout, this place delivers on all fronts. Got an espresso and a macchiato. The espresso was pretty good. Medium-dark roast, good layers, and not bitter or burnt. It had decent body, with citrus chocolate, and nutty undertones. 3.5/5 The macchiato had more milk than expected, more of a cortado. The oat milk was foamed well and it complemented the espresso well. 4/5 as a cortado. Would visit again if in the area and maybe try the pour over. read more

Delicious drinks & great study spot. I got the Iced Strawberry Lychee Matcha. Normally, I find a lot of matcha drinks too sweet but this was the perfect sweetness level. Drinks are ready quickly. I ordered their strawberry lychee matcha. I thought it was just okay; the lychee and strawberry just made the matcha muddier and blander in taste, unfortunately, instead of all three flavors coming out strongly. The drink wasn't that large either. They did have a BOGO danish deal at the time, so I also tried their danishes, which I thought were fine, though not particularly remarkable. I do really like the outdoor courtyard that 1951 shares with the neighboring church; it's a lovely outdoor space that is pretty quiet and secluded from the hustle and bustle of outside. read more

I was out in Berkeley for a rare occasion, and was looking for a quick cafe to grab a drink and a meal when voilaaa, 1951 Coffee Company was just right in front of me. They had pretty good reviews, so I thought why not! I ordered an iced matcha (+ oat milk, vanilla syrup) and a matcha mochi donut. Both items impressed me soooo much!! The matcha was more fragrant than I had expected. The sweetness was just right and the vanilla syrup helped to enhance the matcha's flavor profile. The mochi donut was just the right texture, and most importantly, wasn't too sweet. Inside, the store's actually super clean! I ordered on a kiosk, but they also have a regular cashier if you'd rather talk to an employee. My total was close to $12-13 which felt pretty reasonable. Would definitely recommend! read more

A fantastic company with an excellent mission to support refugees, which feels more important than ever. The drinks here are specialty coffee quality with fun new flavors that the baristas often contribute to. The cafe space itself has posters and graphics about the refugee resettlement process and really drives home how long and difficult their journey to the United States can be. I love a company that truly does the work in addition to talking about it - 1951 Coffee is a great example of using coffee and community to financially support refugees. The baristas are really friendly and lovely! This will always be one of my favorite Berkeley cafes. read more

They need to change their hours to longer. Store gets very busy and slow service due to the reason. Also, their coffee is sooooo watered down. I'm assuming that they had made my drink (I got an iced latte for here) and not called it out because by the time I got it, there was water layered at the top from the ice cubes. My friend got the hojicha which was gritty every sip. The powder was not correctly mixed. Additionally for the price and atmosphere, I am not returning. read more

Coffee shop for a good cause in Berkeley. The coffee shop was established to help refugee. Interior is neat and it has written on the wall about the coffeshop. It has plenty of choices of coffee drink and selection of pastries. You ordered from a touch screen kiosk. All the drink and pastries which we ordered were yummy. I love the atmosphere inside. Service was not good. My name gets butchered all the time so I'm used to it, but when I let the cashier know she got it wrong, her response was "It's ok". No apology, no attempt to correct it. Coffee was ok - but for the price, there are better options (Highwire, Signal, Romeo). read more

I regret not taking pictures of my latte, but it was so delicious! I entered and ordered through the kiosk. My coffee came out pretty quickly and was really delicious. There were plenty of plugs and seating to do work. They also have wifi. It wasn't loud at all and they let people know when they were going to close 10 minutes before. read more

Honey lavender latte and honey oat latte are delicious!! I get both with oat milk and the espresso is strong with the perfect sweetness shining through. They are both coffee drinks that are on the sweeter side but not sickly sweet if you know what I mean. The staff are nice and friendly. People are always studying here since it's right by campus. They also carry mochi donuts from third culture bakery if you're into that. That said, I will be a returning customer :) read more

I got a really nice deal off of Snackpass for 1951, so I ordered the Iced Honey Lavender Latte. Service took a bit longer than expected because I'd visited during rush hour, and it was hard to find seating because it's a relatively small and cozy cafe with a lot of students staying for extended periods of time to work or study (though to be fair, there was plenty of outdoor seating, but it had been raining earlier that day so nobody wanted to sit outside). Everything aside, I thought the drink was really great. It is on the stronger side with 2 shots of espresso, but it's balanced with milk and lavender syrup (all of which you can adjust to your liking). A latte true to its name; you could really taste the different layers of the drink. It was a lovely treat, and I'll definitely be back to try the matcha latte and the honey oat latte! I finally got to try this cafe. And boy it was great! Wonderful and warm service. Nice ambiance. And delicious coffee. I got a Cortado to enjoy in house. 1951 is one of my favorite cafes in Berkeley, and definitely has the highest quality drinks close to campus. I love their matcha as well as the strawberry lychee matcha. They had an amazing hojicha, but I'm not sure if it was removed from the menu or if it was seasonal. Limited indoor seating, but they have a very kind staff. read more

We had a hard time finding a coffee shop that was open early. We walked and ended up here a little after 8. It was nice and quiet. We were pleasantly surprised by how spacious this place was. The cashier and barista were kind. We sat on the corner and noticed there were plenty of charging spots for your electronics which was a nice touch for students. I LOVE 1951! As a college student I would come here all the time. 2 years later, I continue to visit 1951 whenever I come to the Berkeley area. There is a variety of coffee options from the honey oat latte, cappuccino, rose lemonade, or the seasonal offers. The Cocomac and sparkling strawberry lychee lemonade are all fantastic. There are multiple options for coffee around Berkeley, but the service and quality of 1951 coffee in unmatched. If you have to make a coffee choice, I recommend taking a visit. If you are in the mood for a pastry: note that 1951 does offer goods that they get from Third Culture bakery. Third culture bakery is also a delight so I do recommend buying one of their pastries if you take a visit as third culture is a little further. read more

I really admire 1951 Coffee's mission and wanted to support them, but the experience fell a little short. I got a cold brew with sweet cold foam, it was okay, but the coffee wasn't very strong. For the price, I was hoping for something bolder. I also didn't love the kiosk ordering system, it felt impersonal. How do you elevate some of the best coffee in world? Pair it with a barista graduation program for refugees and help a great cause of promoting their well being. They have pour overs, espresso and a nice selection of baked goods to go with them. Went with a few friends and will visit again very soon. read more

One of my favorite spots in Berkeley to study and get some matcha! I love their mission, and it makes me feel a little less bad coming here to drop $6 on a drink LOL. Great tasting matcha lattes, and you have the option to add a variety of flavors of foam! I've also tried their rose lemonade, and I enjoyed the rose flavor, but the matcha lattes are definitely still my go to. They have seating and wifi inside; it can get a bit crowded at times but I've never really had any issues finding a seat. read more

As I was in the area, I decided to stop by 1951 Coffee Company for some caffeine. After seeing all the reviews, I was intrigued by their matcha and honey lavender latte. The matcha flavor was great, and unlike most places that skimp on the matcha. They give you extra which I appreciate. I really enjoyed their honey lavender latte! It was 9/10 for me and the coffee was strong but didn't overpower the lavender taste. Besides the great coffee/tea, 1951 Coffee Company stands for something greater- assisting refugees kickstart their journey in the US. read more

I love coffee but what I love more is a good cause. We were in the area and needed some coffee as we are staying away from the chain companies. I ran in without knowing what I was supporting. This coffee shop is a non profit that hires refugees and asylum seekers. Why wouldn't I support that! So glad I walked in here. Coffee was great and service was even better. The coffee shop was busy and there's was a lot of people (most likely students) on their laptops. The shop is small but with plenty of seating. While I don't live in the area, I will make it a point to come back when I can. read more

They have several tables that you can work out but they are a smaller cafe so the tables fill up quick. They have free fast wifi that you are able to use. The workers were also super friendly.

The drink had a matcha earthiness with a pleasant nutty finish. I would still come back to try the other flavors as Ginger and rose both sound interesting.

In most other cases blossomy food and drink tends to be overpowered by a perfume-like aroma. In this case however it's balanced perfectly with the matcha, present but not too loud.
