I hate giving bad reviews but the food here was so awful it was not edible. Everything was insanely salty, even the salad. It was honestly horrible. If we weren't about to see a show I would have sent it all back but there was no time. The menu has potential so I was disappointed, maybe the chef that night was off their game and over seasoning. My husband and I decided to come here before a Second City show because it was advertised in my order confirmation and the place I originally wanted to go to was closed. We left pretty disappointed though. This place should not be recommended for pre-show dinner. I'll start with the positives though, because this place isn't horrible per say. For starters, the ambiance is pretty cool, using artwork inspired by the Second City theatre space. The service was great. We were seated right away, the waiter was attentive, and any requests we had came quickly either by him or another member of the wait staff. The drink selection is pretty varied. However, the drink menu overtook the food menu. Not that that would normally be a problem, but there just wasn't a great food selection. A few of the items looked good, but not what I would expect from a place advertised as a pre-show dinner spot. It was more of a bar with a few options for food. I ordered the burger because it said I came with aoli, my husband ordered the tacos. The tacos came out first, and tasted fine, but the 3 tacos were pretty puny, especially for the price. It may have been ok if he could have ordered sides, but there were no sides or appetizers on the menu. My burger was decent, I asked to substitute provolone for the American cheese and there were no problems there, the the aoli was just mayonnaise. There wasn't near enough garlic in it to make it edible. The fries were great, but the portion is small. So, wrapping up, this place is great for drinks after a show, but don't come here prior expecting a great dining experience. read more

We went here after a show at main stage. I got their Strawberry Fields and it was delicious and fresh! I was very impressed with their Brussels Sprout salad. I recommend getting food here instead of the service at the shows. read more

I love this place. Stopped here before going to the Up club for #dateme. The Lobster BLT sliders are the best. Don't let the description fool you. It says lobster salad but it is definitely not sloppy with mayo. They were absolutely worth it. My friend had the Brisket sliders another winner. The fries were a great side however my friend did not like the broccoli queso fundido. Too much cheese not enough broccoli. But if you want a lot of cheese you will like it. The finishing touch were the warm beignets. A must have. Light and delicious. We even stopped back in after the show to talk with the cast in a friendly and comfortable setting. I highly recommend this place for a evening out. And don't worry about dressing up it's totally casual. I'll be going back with my husband. read more

My husband and I came here with some of our friends. The atmosphere is pretty cool and they have some games for you to play if you wish while you wait or just while you enjoy a drink. The food comes out as it is prepared. We started our meal off with the butternut squash mac & cheese, which was delicious. It was the perfect mix of cheesy but the breadcrumbs on top gave it a nice crunch! For my entree I had the short rib tacos which were very good! The meat was very tender and flavorful! My friend did have an issue, after the rest of our groups food came out the server returned to the table to tell my friend that unfortunately the entree she had chosen was no longer available, which she was ok with, and placed an order for a different entree. A few minutes later the server returned saying unfortunately the next entree she had ordered was not available either so she had to place a new order. By this time the rest of our group was done with our food and our friend still had not received her entree, this was a little frustrating, however they were very apologetic about it. read more

The Kung Pao tasted like cauliflower Manchurian from Trader Joe's mixed in with noodles....I'm surprised if they just didn't buy it From there and make it. The environment and food were amazing! Chef Jacob is so creative pairing healthy foods and ingredients together and making it taste so perfect! I got the Brussels salad and it had pear slices which gave it the best sweet and salty flavor. I also got Jacob's beets which were cooked perfectly. I came right after a show - it was super busy. The host was on top of it and had me seated right away. Very, very hardworking! So was my waiter. Food came really quick. Only reason it has four instead of five stars is that I was not a big fan of my giant pretzel - it was slightly too salty for my taste, and the cheese tasted kind of "off." We had a very unpleasant experience at 1959 Kitchen & Bar. My family had wanted to go to Second City to celebrate my mother in-law's 80th birthday. Based on the convenience of the restaurant we decided to eat before the show at 1959. Earlier in the week, we had made a reservation and received an email from Heather at Second City, confirming that they would give us one table for all of us (14 people). When we arrived for dinner, we were told that they couldn't give us one table and they were putting us at 3 booths.There was a table that was set up for 12. We asked Catherine, the manager if they could add two chairs to that table and have us sit there. She was unprofessional, unpleasant and uncoopretative. After pushing her, she finally agreed to let us sit there. Catherine never came by to see how things were. he restaurant was extremely busy and it seemed like Catherine spent most of her time at the bar socializing. We had a wonderful waitress named Shayla who worked very hard to make our dinner enjoyable. Shayla would make an excellent manager. I would give Shayla 5 stars and the the management 0! read more

The manager at this location was extremely rude. My friends and I took a seat after watching an improv show when she came over and let us know that we were going to have to get up for other people at 11:15. This was not a problem until she wiped the table down and very obnoxiously sprayed the cleaning product all over us. I tried to laugh it off, but she gave me a very noticeable passive aggressive look that indicated she did NOT want us sitting there. I was extremely taken aback when I asked our server for the manager and he pointed at her. This was our first time at this bar and it was very unfortunate, considering our experience at the improv show was superb. We will absolutely not be returning under any circumstances. Friends and I went here for dinner and drinks before a show at Second City, and you definitely can't beat this place for convenience, as it's located in the same building (and is owned by Second City). We had the Brussels Sprouts appetizer, which was pretty yummy (hello, bacon!), and split three of their dishes for our mains (Mac & Cheese, Carbonara and Chicken & Dumplings), all of which were pretty good, though not exactly low calorie!! Splitting the mains was a good idea...I would suggest that, if you are with a group of friends, so you can sample everything. The big win of the night was dessert, which was the S'mores in a Jar. I don't even really like desserts, and I could have easily finished that off. I wasn't that impressed with the drinks. I started with an Old Fashioned, and for $10, thought it was a bit on the small side, and wasn't very well made. I switched to a bottled beer after that. Service from Shayla was good, even considering how crowded they were, and the overly-needy table behind us. Thanks, Shayla!! Overall, I'd give this place 3.5 stars, if I could, but I can't quite justify 4 stars for them. read more

We found the restaurant open but obviously closed , we walked around and had to go to the box office downstairs to make sure we were in the correct place . Sadly we spent time trying to figure out somewhere else to go to get dinner in enough time to be at our show on time . Please don't think of satisfying your appetite here before a show. The food and drinks were absolutely horrible. I ordered fries to start, which came cold. The salads had little flavor and were stale. The desserts (cobbler) had raw cold apples. The supposedly sweet cocktails tasted like rubbing alcohol mixed with sour. Terrible, terrible food and drink. We also had to repeatedly ask for service although no one was there. Staff was courteous, just not attentive. Please eat and drink elsewhere. read more

I went here for an event of sorts and the staff were friendly, the food was good and the atmosphere was great. I tried the brussel sprouts along with the sliders, everything was delectable. Two months later, I tried to take a date here and got stood up. The server was real cool about it and another server said I was cute and it was her loss. Excellent service + Good Food=Great times, 1959 Kitchen and Bar will remain a recommendation of mine, it didn't work out for me but I still think it's a great place to visit whether you're attending a show or not. read more
