A groups of us went here today for a work lunch. This was the first time all of us have been here and from the moment we walked in, greeted by the waitress and immediately felt welcomed. Our waitress was kind, helpful, and patient. She offered recommendations when I asked; the chef was accommodating when I asked about taking crème brûlée to go and provided some berries with the cheesecake when we asked. Stopped by 1st & Main recently for lunch with a group of four. They're a seat yourself kinda spot and you walk into bar seating as well as bar height tables. If you're with folks who wouldn't be comfortable in seating that height (as we were), not to worry! They have additional traditional table seating through a doorway to the right of the bar. They have a large menu so there's definitely a little something for everyone. I ordered the brie grilled cheese with fries. It was good. I expected more flavor from the brie (it tasted very mild) but the jalapeno jelly added a nice sweetness and a bit of flavor. The atmosphere is your standard pub. It's in a historical building and they provide a bit of the history on their menu which was neat to read. The service was accommodating and efficient. Get to it! read more

A group of 8 got seated right away on a Saturday night. Drinks came quickly. We ordered. The waitress had to be reminded about the salad with the special. We got a big laugh out of being charged $.50 for its dressing. Really?? And it arrived with the meal, not ahead. Hubby enjoyed that special: baked chicken with potatoes & asparagus. My street tacos with steak were delicious!! There were 3 with lots of meat & veggies. Friend's had taco salads, which were average. We were in town shopping so this was our first experience at this excellent bar! We brought our daughter and son-in-law with us. Three of us had the Root Beer pulled pork and one a delicious and juicy burger. I can't tell you how awesome the pulled pork sandwich was. So tender and the flavor that will make us come back for another! The fries were so unique and finally someone cooked a french fry that was crunchy and done. Stopped in for a quick visit and to go order in this new reality: a chicken Caesar salad and sweet potato fries that was very much to my liking. Easy to see why a town that isn't necessarily a huge Yelp user destination has so many reviews, a solid 4 stars to which I concur. Good selection of drinks on tap and more, to my liking but alas, was in the midst of a long drive so for another time. One more thing that caught my eye: this town has a *lot* of bars and restaurants downtown. Actually, kind of a stunning amount, so the fact they're a solid four stars indicates this place is the real deal. My first time coming into 1st & Main. My boyfriend and I were pretty hungry and looking for a tasty hot lunch to hold us over until all of the New Years Eve festivities later that night. The BF went with the Chicago sub that came with a side of au jus. He crushed the entire sandwich so I'm pretty sure he liked it. I went with a turkey and ham club sandwich that came with a nice pesto aioli on it. Both of our meals came with some bomb garlic Parmesan fries in this fun spiral shape. They give you a huge portion of fries and your main meal, so I couldn't clear my plate, but I sure tried. It looks like they have a daily lunch special that comes with fries and a drink for a good price. Three of us stumbled across this jewel in Dubuque. Such an amazing location. Old mercantile building, but completely updated inside! FYI - bathrooms are spotless! Service by such an enthusiastic staff, and knowledgeable on the food and selections. The soups & appetizers were fresh and hot. We started with the Cheesy Potato Bombs - crisp outside, soft inside, incredible flavor. I ordered their meatball sub - perfect baguette, the right amount of sauce mozzarella cheese, and the meatballs were juicy & flavorful. My wife tried the Spaghetti Flatbread - sounds weird, huh? She encouraged us to try a bite - wow! Thank goodness it's a generous size as we all shared it! There was a piece of paper from the raw meat patty on the burger that I ordered. When brought up to the waitress, she was unconcerned and did little to compensate for the error. Dubuque appears to completely shut down on Sundays. So, we were hard pressed to find a place that was open, while we walked through the downtown area. When we finally picked this place, I had the 1st & Main Burger with their spiral parmesan fries. Sigh...the meal was a miss. The burger comes with peanut butter and jelly, which I have had on other burgers and really enjoy the sweet with the savory. Unfortunately, neither the PB nor the jelly were present enough to even be tasted. After two bites, I pulled back the bun to even make sure they were there. They were. But, both were spread VERY thin. The other problem with the burger was that it was undercooked and greasy. Fries can save the day, right? Fries make every meal better!! Nope. The parmesan was literally isolated to 2 fries in the middle of the plate while the others were bare. All in all...a very disappointing experience which made me wish we just would have kept on walking. read more

As I approached this eatery on a frigid December afternoon my eyes lit up the moment I was seated and given a menu. Between the appetizers and the entree the food was incredible. My burger and wrap were second to none. The potato curls were on point and the cost of the whole meal was very reasonable. The staff were very friendly and my experience was outstanding. Really good breakfast this morning!! The special was a chorizo breakfast burrito (enough said, handed the menu back). Lightly spicy, generous fillings and there are hash browns in there too! Very good, very filling. Great service. We had a side of two fried eggs and toast and split it all between the two of us. The toast seems homemade- Yum!! On our way home from a trip, my husband I decided to stop here after looking at the reviews on Yelp, and also the pictures of the food. When we walked in, the waitress said to sit anywhere and then she disappeared. When we asked for a menu, we were told that they were only doing a buffet (for Mother's Day), and again the waitress disappeared before we could say anything. Since she had already served our drinks before mentioning the buffet only option, we decided to just do the buffet, as we were hungry and out of town, so options were limited. The buffet has scrambled eggs (which were over cooked and dry), ham (it was good, as it was soaked in honey), sausage and bacon (the bacon was fresh and tasty, however the sausage was bland and dry), French toast (it was okay), cheesy hashbrowns (again just okay), biscuits and gravy (the biscuits were good, but the gravy was slightly poured on and there was no extra, so it congealed on top of the biscuits), egg flatbread (it was okay), and an assortment of cookies and cakes (didn't have any). You could tell the staff was overwhelmed and the kitchen had trouble keeping up with the amount of people. Furthermore, the buffet was stashed in one corner of the restaurant, and they were using the end of the bar for holding jams, jellies, and syrup. It was discombobulated at best. What really aggravated us was that it was $17.00 per person for this generic buffet! Also, I ended up taking a picture of their advertisement for this buffet, as it had items listed on there that they didn't even serve! Would I come back here?
