My husband and I have had Dr Rick Springfield as our dentist for 20 years. Our children were also his patients until they moved away. He's very careful and diligent with his work. We even had to temporarily move out of state at some point and the out of state dentist I visited was very complimentary about Dr Barfield's work. His staff has always been pleasant and Elizabeth, in particular, is exceptionally helpful, friendly and professional. read more

Dr. Barfield was very rude & argumentative this morning! I understood him to say I needed two bridges & a deep cleaning & he left the room. I then asked his assistant do I have cavities or why am I feeling the sensitivity? He came back in the room and stated that he had already told me. All he had to do was answer my question. He did say that I didn't have any cavities and said something about my gums and I said this was what I needed to hear. He then started to berate me again. I then said that I thought I needed to leave and left. I never did get an answer as to why my teeth were sensitive, and what I needed to do. I lost my 2023 benefit, and worse, I didn't get my very much needed deep cleaning. I guess Santa wasn't very good to him this year! read more

First of all, my name is Behnaz Safavi. Not only this dentist is stupid but also Tiffany and Elizabeth are pretty Stupid. Truly. Pretty Stupid. So, Elizabeth had told me yesterday that FMX x-rays and exam would be free. After reading the reviews, I called back and Talked to Susie and said, so, if x-rays and exam are free, then, I don't need to show you my driver's license or dental insurance card? And to that she said, no, that is conditional upon getting a cleaning. First time I called their office today after yesterday afternoon canceling with Susie, Tiffany answered the phone laughing. I called back and asked for office manager and she said she was the office manager. As dingy as she is. Full of Southern Charm and Positive Attitude is not a correct description of this woman at all. Online. Anyway, she said every one was at lunch at two in the afternoon, when I asked her to ask Elizabeth why she had lied that x-rays and exam were free? She said she had not lied. And then I asked why would Susie say if you got the cleaning the x-rays and the exam would be free. Altogether, Dr. not to be called Rick Barfield ought to not train these not very bright women to lie to make money. Maybe we can reform our education so we don't have rip off artists called doctors. Are teeth even necessary for life at old age? The answer is no. But, how do they get away doing that to such a large number of people is dumbfounding. I've been going here for 3+ years and he never pushes unnecessary dental work. Many dentists, recommend all kinds of work that's not is not in the best interest of our oral care, but for their pockets. My aunt is a dentist in Europe and I always get her second opinion. Before coming here, I went to a dentist and he recommended 6 fillings and to remove my current fillings too. I came here and was told that I needed nothing done. I was a patient for over 10 years and was told I could no longer make appointments on Saturday. Dr. Barfield is the main dentist but you rarely see him. He goes through a new dentist about every 6 months so don't count on consistency. Also, it seems like he hires his front desk help based on looks not merit. Very average dentist experience. The first time I went was for gum pain around my upper left back tooth, had the most amazing dental hygienist who cleaned it up for me. Unfortunately, weeks later the irritation was still there. I agreed to get the tooth capped in attempt to the heal the area. The cap treatment I received is pretty average to below average. They actually left a little piece of cement/glue on the cap that I can feel with my tongue. (I compared this cap to a cap I received on the same tooth on the right side of my mouth.) Went back 6 months later for another bi-annual cleaning. This was pretty much the worst cleaning I've every received. The woman literally skipped teeth. They also charged me for an "oral exam" when I didn't have a consultation with the dentist. Not sure if that was right but Insurance covered it so I let it go. Definitely will be finding a new dentist in 2016! read more

Seduced by the promise of a "lecture-free zone" advertisement on 106.1, I visited 1st in Smiles and am extremely impressed. As someone who has not darkened the door of any dental establishment in several years (despite shelling out for insurance), I was a bit of a nervous wreck and opted for the very early (and extremely convenient for us busy bodies) 7:30am appt. so I could get there before my cognitive abilities caught up with me. The facility is clean and comfortable (as is all is required of it) and the check-in process was fast and courteous (being greeted with a smile upon entry is always a relieving experience). They did full x-rays of my mouth for a complete evaluation (which was not only impressive but a deep relief for me as I was almost positive that I was losing teeth and growing a cavity garden). The customer service level at the establishment is outstanding...like a bit remote from reality impressive (and I'm a front line service provider). I was greeted with kindness and was not chided for my dental sins as I uselessly apologized for my not-so-ivories. Everyone was pleasant and smiling...the entire appt., these individuals who do the dreaded cleanings and hold scary scraping instruments at least give off the appearance of being incredibly pleasant/kind/pleased to see you...which kinda makes dental visits okay. I returned for a deep cleaning 2 weeks later (as gunk was discovered beneath my gum line) and it was really almost a discomfort free process. They offered the giggle gas free of charge and numbed my gums with gel. I went to work at my second job 30 minutes later with no issues or pain at all. I am a dental hygiene convert. My gums and mouth are already less sore and it wasn't traumatic in the least. I highly recommend this place, especially to those of us with dental work anxiety. read more

I'm incredibly impressed by Dr. Rick and his associates. I was referred to this dentist by a doctor and went the next day for a consultation. Scheduling was a breeze! They have dealt with my toothaches, crown procedure, tooth extraction, and general checkups. I'm also continuing with them for my orthodontic work. (Invisalign) The facilities are beautiful and extremely clean. This is generally my first and foremost concern with medical and dental practices. In addition, the staff is friendly and very customer service oriented. They are professional and friendly. Tiffany is so sweet and makes me feel right at home during my appointments! Jessica also helped me during my crown procedure and she is just as good as it gets. I have yet to have a bad experience here and am so thankful that I found a great dentist in the area. I recently had a dentist appointment with my son. Upon leaving, I was told I had a $40 charge for PPE. I paid it and didn't say anything, but became more irritated by it as I drove home. My son and I came in wearing our own PPE. I understand that insurance isn't paying for your PPE, but no one is paying for mine either. I look at this as the cost of reopening your business in these COVID times. I kept my appointment because I want to support businesses and the economy. Shame on you Dr. Barfield for pushing this cost to your clients. The fact that your PPE isn't covered by insurance isn't my problem. read more

Not only did he offer a solution that might work, he referred me to an associate for a second opinion. She concurred. She sent me to another specialist who offered me more options. I've had a lot of different dentist experiences and this one was by far the worst. My first visit there was for a supposedly free cleaning, but I spent two hours there and they didn't even touch my teeth. I got x-rays done and they described the work they wanted to do and wanted me to sign off on $1500 worth of work (after insurance) and then asked me to leave the chair. They are very greedy here. My father was charged double the amount he had agreed on with the Doctor for a crown, and during my next visit I was charged $200 for what was supposed to be a simple FREE cleaning. They like to seem nice and offer you extra services without mentioning how much they cost as well. They also like to charge you for seeing the Doctor even if he never stopped in. Please check your bills for unnecessary charges. Throughout my three visits there I had maybe only seen Doctor Barfield a total of 30 minutes, and most of that was because he did my filling. I've never had a dentist be so aggressive and rough while filling a cavity, it hurt for several months after. I've never had such a collectively terrible time with any doctor, and those who are currently seeing him I recommend you take a closer look at your bills next time, and if you are unhappy I highly recommend Doctor Wilson Lo who is located right down the street. read more

They were recommended by a coworker who spoke so highly of this office. I had a less than stellar experience. I had only been living in TX for a few months, so I was still unfamiliar with the area. I called the office to ask for a description of the building, and it didn't help. I just so happened to turn into an office plaza and began driving around a few minutes. Fortunately, I spotted the office and it looked nothing like what the girl at the desk described. When I went in, I mentioned that the building description I received was inaccurate. Maybe that's when things started to go downhill. From that moment on, the girls at the front desk had serious attitude. Oh well. I was just letting them know so they could be more helpful to the next lost customer. The hygienist was really nice, it was a guy, don't remember his name. The actual dentist, Dr. Barfield, was in and out so quick. He wasn't very friendly and I felt no desire to choose him as my permanent dentist. My coworker told me that he and his wife both received electric toothbrushes when they came. And EVERY dentist I have gone to over the years gives you a little bag with toothbrush, floss and toothpaste. Well, I received nothing from the bitter betty's at the front desk. So I spoke up. Now get this straight. It's not because I cant afford to buy daily essentials, like a toothbrush and toothpaste. But it was the point of being treated poorly by such hateful staff. They gave me my little bag and my electric toothbrush. I left, never to return again. I wouldn't recommend this place if your last tooth depended on it. I wish I had read the negative reviews on him before going. After three years of my family attending (because the previous dentists were great), I met with Dr. Rick Barefield for the first time. He apparently had something personal going on but I had to leave due to his extreme anger and rudeness. When I asked to speak to the office manager she stated, "I've worked with him for 15 years and he gets that way sometimes." But my understandable complaints were not welcome by Dr. Barefield. As I was speaking to her he returned and kept yelling to "get her out now I'm calling the police" I walked out feeling confused and shocked trying to understand what had just happened. I don't understand how he still has a practice. But then again, I was there for 3 years before ever encountering the likes of him. He obviously has peace missing in his life. And a lot of self respect. Do not go here if you want to maintain yours for a day. I see others had this same sentiment and walked out getting the same impression as I did as to why maybe we were treated this way. read more

Created an account with Yelp just so I could share my less-than-stellar experience with this place. I'll try to make this as short, sweet, and to the point as possible with elaborations only where necessary. I was recommended to this place by a co-worker because they schedule appointments on Saturday so I didn't have to use precious paid-time-off during the week. Months ago I had my teeth cleaned, whitened, and got porcelain veneers made for my four upper front teeth as well as a crown for a molar. The work was painful as expected but, by and large, everything went smoothly and my teeth look great (for now)... ...I was told that I grind my teeth in my sleep... So, on the same day (this is sometime back in May) I got my veneers and crown fitted into place and they made a mold of my 'new' mouth for a night guard to protect my teeth and veneers. All they ever said was, "it'll be ready in three weeks, just swing by and pick it up!" I ended up helping my parents every weekend for a month and a half and completely forgot about it. I was never called, texted, or emailed any notification stating, "hey! your night guard that you spent hundreds of dollars on is waiting for you here at our office!" Not a word. I finally remember and had the time this previous Saturday 'to swing by and pick it up'. And this is when I started getting pissed... I walk in to pick it up. The doofus front desk girl that I had to deal with on Saturday and today, who has zero empathy, disingenuous concern, and pathetic customer service experience tells me, "just wait and we'll be right with you!" I'm expecting to be in and out so that I can make it to a lunch date on time. I waited for 10-15 minutes before thinking, "what the hell is wrong with you people?!..." I ask what the hold up is and doofus says, "well we're having to fit you in to the schedule so that you can get fitted for your guard..." ("it'll be ready in three weeks, just swing by and pick it up!")... WHAT??? I now tell doofus and several other disingenuously concerned staff members that I was never told this nor was I set up for a follow-up appointment to get 'fitted' for an exact mold of my teeth (which sounds redundant). Doofus told me, "it just takes like 10 minutes!" I didn't have time for their Mickey Mouse B.S. because of the lunch date, so they scheduled me an appointment during my lunch break (and I had made a point of telling them I was going to be doing this on my lunch break) on Monday at 2pm to get 'fitted' for my night guard. And this is when the straw broke the camel's back... Remember, I'm on my lunch break from the office and this is supposed to be in and out... 10-15 minutes, right? 35 minutes past my appointment time and the same front desk doofus girl from Saturday finally has the gumption to call me over. She proceeds to tell me that, "someone 'misplaced' (translation: LOST/THREW OUT) my night guard and that my teeth have probably shifted anyways because the original was made back in May and that they can make a new mold in like 15 minutes..." 15 minutes my a$$. More like 30-45 minutes in addition to the 20 minutes to and from work by The Galleria AND the 35 minutes y'all made me wait while 10 other people with the same time of appointment went before me AND THEN be forced to come back AGAIN to get 'fitted' after three weeks of waiting. That was it. I had all that I could take. I told doofus that I want my money back (which she then replies happily with no empathy or any way to make things right, "OKAY! That will have to be mailed on a check by our accountant on Friday! Sorry! (disingenuous)", and to tell Dr. Barfield that I'll just use night guards from CVS. PATHETIC... You're supposed to leave the dentist's office with a nice clean feeling in your mouth, but I left with the taste of $hit in my mine... The thing of it is this was something relatively small and simple and they epically and utterly blew it on all levels. Off of the chart incompetence, zero empathy, zero attempt to make it right or fight to keep my business. From what I've experienced and observed of the staff there was no point in losing my $hit, beyond the slamming of their doors as I left, because it would've done no good at (fallen on deaf, unconcerned, nonchalant ears) and all I would've accomplished would be to show my a$$. In retrospect, reading what I've typed thus far, I have nothing against Dr. Barfield as a person (really nice and blunt guy once you get to know him), nor his hygienists (unless one of them is responsible for 'losing' my $300 night guard), but I have nothing good to say about his front of the house staff and how his practice is managed. Needless to say, I am getting my refund check and transferring my dental records to another dentist. I don't need to feel like someone is pissing in my pocket and telling me it's rain. I'm never doing business here ever again and I will never recommend this practice to any of my friends or family. read more

He was my dentist 4 years ago. He treated me for PFM crowns on ALL my molars. Fast forward to now, all those crowns need to be changed. They all encroach the biologic width AND 6 of them have open margins. Open margins basically means bacteria and decay can reoccur in the OPEN spots. Crowns typically have a good lifespan, but apparently my were so poorly done they barely lasted a 4 year span. I got one replaced today since it appears I may even need a root canal thanks to how large the crown was and how bad the open margin is. I don't want to discredit this dentist, as I am sure he is a great dentist, but my mouth is full of failed crowns and now I'm financially crippled. I am crying and at a loss at how many crowns can fail so fast. I honestly am devastated that this could happen. I have no health insurance and I have nothing but stress now. 5K + (out of pocket) for these crowns and they are all failing and there is nothing I can do about it. Edit: I do want to mention that at the time, 4 years ago, they had the sweetest hygienist. I have never gone back after all the crazy amount of restorative work I needed, so I am not sure if she is still there. She is the reason I sought my current career. read more

Way TOO EXPENSIVE + NEVER were checked by Dr. Barfield! After being hospitalized, on my initial visit I was told by the Hygienist that I needed a "deep cleaning" appt. Turned out that fee for that the 1 hour "Deep Cleaning" was $1,000!! No further work was recommended but after seeing another dentist 4 months later, the X-Rays showed the evidence of 2 cavities as well as the need for a crown! My wife had a 28 minute "routine cleaning" by a Hygienist but was NOT checked by the dentist! This 'routine' cleaning was $240 but she had a $50 Referral Coupon so actually paid $190. The only way that we knew what Dr. Barfield looked like was thanks to his picture on the web site! read more

Fake acting personnel and false advertised a promotion they supposedly had where they would whiten your teeth for free, all lies, lies, lies. I brought the flyer with me that I received in the mail and gave it to the 1st desk receptionist. After my exam I asked about the promotion, and the lady said it was not free, the free part was just for the trays or something and I said to me free is free, because it said nothing about it just being for "free" trays. Just the exam itself took about 1 and half hours and when I did see the dentist I forget his name, he had a condescending attitude, all of the personnel just seemed like it was about money, that's what I sensed. I also felt pressured and they seem to have a "the sky is falling attitude, I have had some bad experiences with dentists but this is by far the WORST! I agree with Jennifer B. I have never been treated so rudely and disrespectfully by a doctor. I had been seeing Dr. Barfield for approximately 4 years. I was disappointed with my first visit with the lack of personal interaction as a new patient, however; I went back. He did suggest replacing all silver fillings. I had major work done with crowns involved. First set of permanents didn't fit and his assistant tried adjusting by drilling on them without Dr. Barfield examining. I had to have another temporary set made and that was dropped and broken, so another was made. I was there for 4-5 hours. I was left for very long periods of time in the room without explanation or checking in on me. After 2nd permanent set was placed, I had questions about my teeth feeling loose after 3 weeks. He was very defensive and told me not to touch them except to brush them. They offered no information up front on what to expect after the work. He doesn't seem to communicate well with his staff up front. I had asked if he would be available to discuss my plan on treatment prior to the work being done and I was told yes. He didn't get the message and his assistant started removing crowns, so I had questions. She became irritated because she felt I had asked multiple questions more than once. I was expecting Dr. Barfield to come in and go over the plan and ask my concerns since it had been 2 years since we had discussed. He said I should have set up an appointment for this and I told him I did discuss with his staff when I made my appointment. read more

My daughter AF went in for regular cleaning which took about 10 minutes. Regular cleaning of 2-times year and x-ray are covered 100% by my insurance. However, Dr. Barfiled's office charged total of $202 and $84.80 was out-of-the-pocket. I called to inquire about the charges and was encountered with VERY rude clerk (Payton, spell?) who argued with me and made me feel dumb and angry. I requested to talk to the manager which I did. The manager( Brandy), was more reasonable and explained and apologized and agreed to void the invoice which included Dr's exam fee which did take place and other items (oral rinse for $59) that they did not obtain permission to treat and etc. I have the feeling that this is not an isolated incidence. However, I don't appreciate the hygienists sharing patient information with their friends who know the patient to try to scare them into paying for additional dental work.
