We originally got retro fit Milgard windows over 20 years ago. Over that time a couple of windows had some serious smudge/gunk on the glass that it wasn't clear any more. We also had another window that a small rock hit years ago and the resulting hole caused some rusting on the interior frame that separates the two panes of glass. I called one dealer and they said any glass company could come out and replace just the failed glass. On yelp I found some glass companies and got some quotes and they were running around $400-$500 each (!), and just for the single glass replacement (there's 4 panes of glass on the whole window, 2 on the fixed side and 2 on the sliding portion). On 1stwindow I did an estimate for the windows I needed and it ran around $500 each (and this is for the whole frame plus glass, and custom size). There's a standard $300 delivery charge (I think Milgard charges, that, not 1stwindow) per order. So my total was going to run around $1800. (of course that doesn't include installation which I could do and have done). Anyway I placed my order online and John calls me back to confirm the window dimensions (these are all custom sized windows). I told him what I was doing and he tells me that Milgard has a lifetime glass warranty and if it's just the glass that's bad, I should be able to get those repaired by Milgard. To help with this, he asked for some pictures and he opened a repair request with Milgard! He did find my order from 2003 (I placed multiple orders since I only replaced 4 or 5 windows at a time). Milgard called me a few days later to schedule the repair work. They came out and repaired everything. So I still have one window that I need to order and replace (the one damaged by a rock isn't covered by any warranty). In having the glass repaired, I also had a couple of screens that needed replacing and I called a few screen repair places that I found on Yelp. 1st Windows is great to work with and I'd definitely recommend them if you're a DIY type of person. read more

I was a little apprehensive about custom ordering my own Milgard windows but it was relatively easy and cost effective. I had a great experience with 1stwindows. I took all my measurements, entered the information on the website, and Luis D. called to confirm the measurements and which side my window would open. Luckily he double checked because I had one window wrong. He gave me a delivery date (about 4-5 weeks out) and my windows were delivered as promised. The Milgard windows purchased from 1st Windows are OK but the screen doors installed with them are poorly designed, impossible to service and now are tearing, breaking and extremely difficult to open. Early on the doors had operational problems which Doug attributed to our using WD40 to lubricate them, something he never mentioned until after I complained about their poor functionality. At this point instead of taking responsibility for the poor workmanship and design of the screen doors they sold, I am being referred to another vendor to have the problems resolved. Buyer beware with this company if you have an expectation that they will stand behind their work and the products they sell. read more

I needed a Snib thumb latch for a Milgard vinyl sliding patio door for one of my apartment units. Online everywhere snibs are not sold separately instead you must buy the entire handle and locking mechanism at a cost of $79. After a day of driving all over the south bay looking for an in stock handle with no luck finally I went to 1st windows. There I met with associate John Moddocks and rather than charge me for a part that I didn't need he found a spare snib and instead insisted that I take it free of charge. When I asked why he said that if it saves me money and Milgard technicians time then it is worth it to him after all it was a spare, and it was simply good business. I was wowed. It is refreshing to find professional, and honest customer service like this now days. I purchased 2 windows and a patio sliding door in February. They look great! New patio slider works very well. Opens and closes very efficiently. Also, it is quieter in that room and temperature in room is much more comfortable. Same with rooms where new windows went in. We went to five places looking for windows to use in our remodel. These guys are great, even though they are off the beaten path- an industrial park in Signal Hill. They had the capacity to complete my order through email and a couple phone calls - initiated by me. John was great and handled all my questions in a friendly way, even though I am sure I asked numbskull questions- a lot. Doug was great also and handled a size change request for us while John was out of the office. Other window shops wouldn't even talk to us if another person had previously quoted us. After 8 weeks of several follow up calls,emails and speaking with 2 separate representatives of 1st Window (Luis and Brad) about replacement locks for my sliders and doors, I was shocked to finally get the response that they could not help me and instead referred me to one of their competitors. It appeared that they didn't want to do the work. It's a shame that I couldn't depend on one of our local suppliers that I had used in the past. I have never experienced the lack of customer service as I did from 1st window. Had a really poor experience with customer service. Was referred to this company through the Milgard website and received a fairly quick response from their team via email. Was told I'd receive a call from their associates, but never did--even after contacting them twice saying I never heard from them. I called 1st Windows out of the blue two days ago because our home has Milgard sliding glass doors and windows and a door handle was breaking. The windows and doors were already here when we bought the home and I don't know who the previous owners used. Anyway, John answered the call at around 4:40 and asked me to take a picture of the handle and send it to him. The next day, he emailed me that he had a handle in stock. I went by to pick it up today and there was no charge. If you are considering replacing your windows or doors, I say give 1st Windows a look. Couldn't get the more expensive brand in time so I settled for a cheaper one that would arrive 2 days earlier. Delivery date came and went, no call. I called them at 4:45 but they were closed. John said the manufacturer was taking longer and that picking up directly from them would save us a day. Voice mail after voice mail from John, I googled the manufacturer, called them directly, and got as far as I could trying to track our order down but no luck without an order number. Finally got a hold of John, he gave me his spiel of "I've talked to 4 people over there and no one knows anything. The shipping lady is useless". I get the order number. Call myself, get the shipping lady and she easily tracks our order and says we can pick it up that day. I find it hard to believe that I've never dealt with these people and they were eager to help and John supposedly spoke to 4 people and couldn't get anything achieved. If they read this, it would be awesome if I could be refunded the shipping I'm sure they included in our invoice since it was never shipped. But I won't hold my breath. read more
