I heard so many great things about the omakase at this restaurant and also read the article in the Honolulu Magazine so I couldn't wait to try this place. I love sushi and Japanese food...so you can imagine how excited I was on the night if our reservation. Unfortunately, the omakase was slightly different from my expectations. The food was delicious...just not what I expected. There is a private seating for 6 guests at the sushi bar. I remember reading that it was a BYOB restaurant and my friends and I opted for no alcohol that night. Maybe I was wrong to assume that other beverages, like water, would be served. When we asked for water we got some straight from the sink...and it tasted like metal. I would have gladly brought my own bottled water if I knew BYOB meant all beverages. Okay, now for the meal...I expected more nigiri with raw fish or sashimi. However, the salmon nigiri was the only raw fish we got that night. We were served a lot of vegetable dishes and other traditional Japanese cuisine like somen and tempura. The tempura was perfectly cooked and seasoned. You will definitely leave here stuffed! A friend of mine gave me the heads up about this place when she saw 22Kailua on Instagram. I rarely venture on that side of the island for dinner but after hearing about her experience there, I figured I had better try it. During the day, it's a coffee shop and retailer. At night, owner Taka turns the place into a sushi omakase-style bar. This review is about the omakase. You may recognize Taka from his days with Ando san (of Ando Yakitori) at the old Kohnotori locations on Piikoi and King Street. This is what he calls his "retirement." He only takes a party up to 6 and it's normally just one seating a night. So it's basically a private party...or when he feels like opening. Reservations are a must. You have to be comfortable around a sweet golden retriever as well. She tends to come around and investigate what you're up to. Her name is Pualani and she's the cutest. His omakase is a bit different from what you're normally use to. I would say he blends a good mixture of the traditional stuff like the fishes and some seafood, along with some vegan options as well. We were also served somen and tempura, all of which are cooked right then and there. So be patient, our dinner was just over 2 hours long but it honestly did not feel that long at all. The wait time between each servings was just right too. We had 15 servings, which is unheard of for how much food you get at some other omakase's nowadays. Best thing about it, the cost set us back $75 and it was absolutely worth it. Worth the food, the company, the privacy of the dinner and the quaintness of the environment. Read a great review about it in the Honolulu magazine so we made reservations through Instagram and decided to try it. They only have 6 seats available each night for their omakase so you need to make reservations as soon as they are released. Came here for the first time to celebrate a special occasion which happened to be their 1 year anniversary and got their special omakase menu for the night. The other group of 4 who had made reservations cancelled so it was just my boyfriend and I. It ended up being a really romantic and fun experience since it was like having our own personal chef for the two of us. Taka, the owner and chef, was fun to chat with and he served us an amazing meal. He was very hospitable and made sure we had full bellies and a good experience. Taka also messaged us the picture he took with us a few days later and asked us if we enjoyed our meal. All the fresh seafood, sashimi, sushi and dishes we were served on the omakase menu were delicious! We especially loved the uni, chu and Oo toro and chawanmushi. The coffee jelly at the end was innovative but super bitter and would've preferred some type of green tea inspired dessert or something else. We had 20 plus plates of food and left stuffed! The server was very friendly and gave us 5 choices of beans to choose from with an explanation of each. Coffee was hot and delicious. Shhhh! We enjoyed our secret sushi bar experience! I'm not showing pics of all the courses. They do give you what is seasonal and it appears the standard menu will have variations. I was partial to their broths, thoughtful presentation, tempura, and a nice balance of the land and the sea. If you want fish, more fish that is you probably want to get the sashimi upgrade. The way this place handles reservations is more old school. You have to message them on their instagram (@22kailua: https://www.instagram.com/p/CMgK2eej-w1/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link) and ask for their phone number. There are two seatings, one at 5PM and one at 830PM. This makes it so that it's more of an exclusive kind of feel and so that the chefs are able to have a more personal connection with the customer. When you get there, make sure you text the same number to let them know that you're here so they can come out and get you. The gate was technically closed when we got there since in the day time, the store front is a coffee shop so that was locked up. The bar seating could technically seat up to 5 people but our party of 3 got really lucky and had the whole place to ourselves! Undivided attention from both chefs! Probably the best omakase experience I've had before. There was a mix of nigiri, sashimi, and small plates here as we got the kaiseki omakase. Our party had a few favorites, the wagyu beef sukiyaki with egg foam, anagi over an egg roll (not sure what it's officially called), and chawanmushi (all pictured with this review). The egg in the wagyu sukiyaki was amazing as they used eggs from Japan that were much more rich in flavor, color, and texture. I literally drank the soup after I finished everything. No regrets. For the anagi over the egg roll, while it may look like a simple dish, it was gushing with flavor that none of us were expecting. As for the chawanmushi, my girlfriend hates anything that's super eggy but she literally drank the cup that this was served in. Needless to say, she loved it! It was super flavor filled with a kind of umami taste that she wasn't expecting. She originally wanted to just give it to me but after one bite, she took it back right away, lol. So a crazy thing happened during our meal. The chefs were very personable and easy to talk to so our party randomly decided to talk about cane spiders that are native to Hawaii. Towards the tail end of our meal, one actually showed up. My friend saw it leisurely crawling up the side of a wall and pointed it out to the chef. We all shared an "oh shit" and had a momentary staring contest with it. While it was still moving, our main chef was holding a blow torch and for a second thought about torching it up. We talked him out of it and he eventually decided to use his crocs instead, which we all agreed was a much better choice. (What if burning it didn't kill it and it was running around on fire?!) He slowly walked up to it and slammed it down. It made a small 'crack' noise (imagine opening up a soft shelled crab) and fell to the ground. I wish I had recorded the epic moment. He said in the 3+ years of operating there, he had never seen one. Guess it just took us talking about it for one to show up. He said it's definitely a night to remember to so anyone reading this review that actually decides to go, you should definitely ask about it. Haha~ While COVID sucks, there are some silver linings like making our experience more intimate with these wonderful chefs. If you're in Hawaii and looking for an omakase joint, this is it. I LOVE 22Kailua. If you've never been to an omakase, are on the Kailua side, and want a special night out, then this is the place for you. Tucked behind a coffee shop boutique is a private sushi bar area where you are within arms reach of the chef's preparing the food. They offer many different omakase's (which really just means chef's choice), but I recommend the Kaiseki omakase to get a fantastic Japanese sushi and small plates meal. Plus they offer BYOB and can accommodate up to 5 people . Triple bonus is the owners cute dog pualani who will happily munch on your uneaten shrimp tails. Read about this place on Yelp and other sites, was already intrigued and then come to find out my husband worked with him many moons ago in Waikiki so we had to go! We were fortunate to get a res after they reopened after the shutdown. There were 6 if us. Its prix fixe...but you can upgrade if you want. Small portions of many courses. If it's your first time then I definitely recommend the $120 omakase (higher end ingredients such as caviar, oyster, uni etc) We were so STUFFED especially my hubby who looooves to eat. 22Kailua is a small coffee house. The first impression I got was, wow! It looks so Japanese. Japan has some of the best coffee shops on this planet. Well looks like we have one in Kailua now. Owner Takashi Kijima moved to Hawaii from Osaka, Japan in November of 2016 to "retire" and enjoy life. He found himself searching for a good coffee shop and some nice food. He was unsuccessful. He said, "if I can't find it, I'll open my own shop." He supports local coffee producers from all over the state. I had the Puna Big Island Kona Peaberry. Silky smooth with hints of chocolate and cinnamon. Take san makes all of his coffe pour over style. He calls himself "old school" so no fancy Italian machine. He is also a chef! Yes I said Chef. He does small partys up to 6 people. You need to text him at least 2 days before you want to come in and eat. He does sushi and nabe, a Japanese hot pot. I can't wait to try his food. On a scale of 1-5 I give it a 10! This was absolutely the most amazing food experience we have ever experienced in our lives! This is a very special omakase experience where the sushi and sashimi fish are the freshest available (most flown in from Japan). Dustin and Malia are wonderful chef hosts making this a full, warm, and exceptionally personal experience. Worth the effort to get a reservation (only through Instagram when they post the month calendar is open ahead. Typically books up within 2 hours of their IG post, so be on the lookout and never give up!!!!) Taka-san is a gem of a human. Today, on our way to Lanikai beach, I noticed a little coffee shop out of the corner of my eye and thought "huh, that looks precious - I wonder if there's parking?" Oh man, I cannot tell you how glad I am that I stopped. What is this place? Is it a bunch of pop-up shops stuffed into one room? Is it Taka-san's living room? Is it a restaurant? Is it a coffee shop? Yes. Two beautifully prepared iced pour-overs were the start to our day. Miraculously, there were two spots for dinner left on the list for the night, so we eagerly snatched them up! Pro-tip, Takashi recommends that you give him at least 24 hours notice for a table. We went swimming/snorkeling at Lanikai, went back to Honolulu for showers/a change of clothes, enjoyed some site-seeing and made our way back. Oh man. Oh man. Where do I start? This was a 2-hour treat. We were made to feel as if we were the guests of honor in Taka-san's home. Each dish was served on the most beautiful ceramic dish, each item was seasoned just right, and a 2-hour meal left us feeling sated without being stuffed. The textures and flavors were expertly timed and coursed. We easily spent 2-3x the amount we did with Taka-san at a few very-high-end-sushi spots on Oahu on this trip, but never had a meal quite like this. I cannot recommend him enough; he is an incredibly kind, warm, gentle soul, makes wonderful food, and leaves you singing the praises of his cuisine the whole drive home. First of all, 22Kailua is on my top when it comes to coffee shops in Oahu. The amount of percision that Takashi puts into a pour over cup of coffee translates over to every sip you take. I had the Kona pour over and the iced coffee. For the iced coffee Takashi cut some fresh ice for the cup which made a surprising difference since the irregular shape and large size help it from diluting the coffee to quickly. The coffee shop itself seemed super random in a good way and quite aesthetically pleasing. Takashi is super friendly and really nice to talk to. Not to mention his dog is super cute and friendly as well! It was a little hard to find and we had to park in a nearby garage, but that was literally the only downside. read more

We really enjoyed this place and loved having the opportunity to get to know some of the workers there. It is definitely not the best location for a business but I love what they've done with the spot and how they've chosen to grow it organically. I've only had the breakfast so I cannot speak on how the sushi experiences but we are looking forward to that. Inside the place is kind of ADD with an eclectic mix of random things which say a lot about the owner and his tastes. This cove of a coffee shop is tucked away from a busy bus stop on Oneawa. The shop is a collection of slow drip coffee, a lounging lovely golden retriever, a small trove of boutique apparels and an Omekase bar (6 seats) hidden in the back. It's quirky and of course, a couple of Japanese tourists were rummaging through the trove. I ordered a cup of peaberry coffee with an omelette sandwich which were exquisite.
