Found The Hibachi on a whim after hitting the beach and craving some Hawaiian plate lunch and poke. While we really wanted to like this place, and went off the great Yelp reviews, unfortunately the food missed the mark for us. The portions are big, but taste wise I felt there was room for improvement. However, the service was great and the employees very friendly and helpful with navigating the menu. While it seems they are mostly a carry out business, there are a few seats in front, although be prepared to dine with plenty of rooster and hens walking about. - Poke: The standard spicy ahi was too mayo heavy without much spice, and the huge slices of onion (including the big chunk you can see in my pic) really threw it off. The fish itself was ok, but a bit on the mushier side. - Proteins: Plate lunch with kalbi and shrimp, plate lunch with terriyaki chicken, and bowl with kalbi: The shrimp was the best of the proteins and had a nice seasoning, while the kalbi and chicken tasted warmed over. The chicken tasted like the rubbery texture you would get with mall food court chicken. The kalbi was unlike any traditional kalbi I've had, in terms of taste and texture. - Sides: Mac salad, krab salad, and Japanese potato salad. Service is top notch. The ladies behind the counter are kind and so informative. We appreciate their suggestions and kindness. Parking is ok. Honestly I would not worry about trying to park in the actual parking lot. I would find a place and walk there. Saw nice reviews on Yelp and was nearby post beach. It's convenient, delicious, fresh and have so many choices to choose from. The ice teas are also very delicious and not too sweet. I love the plain pokes like salmon and hamachi and added the citrus ponzu sauce. But the crowd favorite and spicy tobiko is also very scrumptious so I will say you won't go wrong with any of the choices. I like the fresh vegetables that is mixed in with their poke. The staff are friendly and the prices comes to around $40 for one small and one large bowl with an ice tea. They really give you a great bang for your buck, and there are SO many options to choose from. One thing that stood out is that they weigh the poke by the pound rather than serving it by scoops, which I personally think is a better approach. We wanted to grab a bite to eat before our golf round at Royal Hawaiian, so we hopped on Yelp and found this spot and we are glad we did! We got there just after opening and the lady behind the counter was super nice and kinda talked us through the menu. We ended up going with a 1/4lb of poke, and their combo plate with kalbi and shrimp. I think my least favorite was the shrimp. It was standard with not standout flavors but the Kalbi, that was the one I keep thinking about. While it was room temp, it was still hella good. I don't know if they pre-cook it or what but either way, that's something I'd eat every day if I could. Tender, flavorful, just so damn good. 10/10 would recommend their kalbi and be sure to get some of their spicy sauce which is vinegar based I think, because it elevates the dish. This is our favorite poke place in Kailua! The food is *mwah* and the staff is nice! The shop is clean and well-stocked with good food and lots of drinks and snacks. There's a parking lot and a restroom in the parking lot area that you can borrow a key for. Our favorites are the hamachi (soo good), the spicy Thai peanut, and the salmon. We also like the ocean salad and the sea asparagus. We haven't tried their grilled items but always want to- it's just hard to decide when we always want their poke! The food was a major disappointment. It was disgusting, i couldn't even eat half of it before giving it away to the chickens running around the parking lot. I was hoping I wouldn't get sick from the little I did eat. The ahi fried rice had a spoiled smell and the texture was off. It reminded me of old fried rice that's been sitting around outside of the fridge for too long and was about to become really rancid. The shrimp was overcooked and lacked flavor. The kalbi was horrible. It was chewy, dry, flavorless. It reminded me of swap meet jerky. Look at my picture, anyone can see that it doesn't even look like Kalbi. The sides were meh. My gf got a poke bowl and we were shocked that cold rice was already in the bowl just sitting around waiting for someone to buy a bowl. Also Hardly enough rice to call it a poke bowl. The poke was meh. I would never go back to this place and I suspect they bought all the yelp reviews because ain't no way it's a 4.4 star place. We were looking for a plate lunch on a drive around the island and we stopped here based on the good Yelp reviews. We parked in the back and were a bit surprised that there wasn't anywhere to sit inside- it was just like a market inside. There were a few tables to sit on the porch and sidewalk, so we ordered our lunch and ate it outside. I got a chicken teriyaki plate and upgraded to the Ahi fried rice. My wife got a regular poke bowl, and the kiddo got a kid's spam musubi bowl. The poke bow was decent. My chicken plate was very generous on portion but the chicken a little dry and I wasn't a fan of the Ahi fried rice. It had a very "earthy" taste to it and ended up tossing a good chunk of the fried rice. The spam musubi bowl needed the most improvement. Simple concept, stir fried spam cubes with furikake over rice. However, it was swimming in soy sauce! It was like rice soup. Thankfully when we complained that our kid wasn't eating rice like this, they gave us another serving of rice but in the end, not much of the dish was eaten and we ended up having to purchase some sushi across the street at the market to satisfy the kid for lunch. They used to serve real bbq Galbi back in the days. We went there every time we visited Honolulu . Now they just serve heated beef jerky and call them Galbi. The chicken katsu curry rice was tasty, but the sides were underwhelming. The cabbage kimchi was nothing close to what kimchi should be. This was more like pickled cabbage with vinegar and some chili flakes. The imitation crab salad was alright but a little on the plain side which didn't give it any nice flavor. Like to give two in a half star: Poke plate with choices of two sides and two or three poke. Almost $25 for a hefty plate. The ferment onion is good but Korean noodle doesn't taste like Korean style. Different flavor but ok. Thai spicy basil(expecting unique flavor boomb but no) and spicy taboki wasn't spicy nough to be tasty. Fish is gray specially during lunch time around 11am. Def not fresh hoping to be freshly made at least. Regular shoyu poke on the side that's a quarter lb is pretty salty. Thought be good to add more shoyu but that was a mistake. If we can't be honest what's the point?! Bummed cuz I had high hopes after seeing the Yelp reviews and the food pics. After eating a ton delish food on the north shore, Waikiki and honolulu I wanted to try something on this side of the island. Sigh I hate giving terrible reviews to mom and pop shops who put a lot of love and energy into their food. so with reluctance I will share my experience. After spending half the day in lani kai hiking pillbox, snorkeling, and playing vball I was starving along as was my crew. We all new hibachi was where we were gonna feed our hunger. Arrived and ordered poke(tuna and salmon), Teri and Kalbi combo and with japchae and potatoe salad, and a bbq skewer combo with beef chicken and ahi. We also got Thai tea(delish) We first dove into the poke and we all liked the salmon but the tuna had a funky fishy flavor. Food land over is better no fish funk. We got on the plate lunches and we all took a few bites and it was awkwardly quite. We all looked at each other and a few spit out their bites and a few of us including my force swallowed their bites. There was something in fresh about the meats it made me feel uneasy about putting another bite in my mouth. There was also an overwhelming amount of cumin used more than should be. It lead to all of us just closing the lids and putting it in the trash. I'm gonna chock it up to maybe a bad day or batch, I dunno. I don't think I will come back and give this place another try. My husband got a poke bowl, with one of their poke specials and hamachi, I tried some of it and it was underwhelming. I wasn't in the mood for poke, so I opted for a safer local choice: the BBQ chicken, ahi fried rice, tofu salad, and choy sum on the side. I really wanted to like this place and support a local business, but unfortunately, there was nothing to like about my plate lunch, their drinks, nor their service. Our order was taken by a trainee, and the process took longer than expected. While I understand that trainees are still learning, it impacted the overall experience, especially since I waited more than 30 minutes for the food, only to be let down by what I received. The BBQ chicken was overly salty and lacked that char flavor you expect from grilled BBQ chicken. I was excited for the ahi fried rice, but it turned out clumpy, overcooked, with some pieces that are hard to bite, almost like it stuck to the pan too long. We weren't sure if we would like any of the sides, so we decided to skip them, but retrospectively we should have tried something new. The food came out quick and we were excited to eat. We ordered the unagi (eel) bowl, but the eel was served cold and clammy, which was very unappetizing. My head was just going in circles, up and down trying to read everything. It was a little overwhelming, but the guy was very helpful and started explaining choices, and what not. I ended up just getting a teriyaki chicken bowl just chicken and rice (you have the option of plate that you can pick 2 sides) and the wife got lamb chop and carne asada skewer plate. So cool, cuz they grill the meat right there in the back where the parking lot is! So, they actually have tables outside in the front to sit down and eat, and you can smell the bbq aroma, smell so good lol. So funny cuz I thought the side of the outdoor seating was a separate business, but was the same. Best part was we got to feed our burning hungry tummy's. The wife really enjoyed her lamb chop and carne asada skewer plate. For her sides, she got japchae and tofu. She said she definitely would come back for that plate again. I did sample a piece of her carne, and man, it was good. I've never ever had bad poke in Hawaii...until I tried the Hibachi. My husband and I were craving poke after a day at Lanikai, so we consulted Yelp and found this spot. The ahi they use here is absolutely not fresh - the flesh of the fish was grey instead of the beautiful deep red you usually see. The texture was mushy and it tasted fishy. We've never encountered such poor quality ahi on all the islands. Quite honestly, this was actually worse than poke on the mainland! We took a few bites and threw away the rest. I ordered the Spicy Oyster Ahi, so flavorful and the spiciness was just right. My best friend got a customized plate of just ahi, onion, rice, and soy sauce because she is allergic to sesame oil which all of their products have.
