Came here on a Saturday evening and it was pretty populated! This place operates more like a cafe than a restaurant in that you order at the cash register, not at your table, and then you can go pick up your drinks/food at the pickup counter. We wanted to sit but when we got there, the tables were already full. We were kind of confused because the cashier told us that if we wanted to sit inside, they recommended that we order once we're seated. It was only a few minutes before someone left their table and we sat down, but after 15 minutes no one came to our table. We ended up using the website which uses Toasttab to order (it's easy and efficient, and texts you when the order is ready). But we wished it was more clear that no server was coming. There are no signs we saw that indicated that Toasttab was an option. We ordered the mild chicken and original chicken and both were pretty good! The original is a dry rub seasoning while the mild is a wet sauce that tastes a lot like Korean fried chicken. Both were crispy and juicy and came with crisp pickled cabbage and carrots in a small container, which really balanced out the fried food with a hit of freshness! Food portions were a tad generous, meaning that the three of us shared 2 boxes of chicken and we were satisfied and still had enough room to share 2 donuts! For donuts we got the matcha and churro. They were light and fluffy and delicious! Overall yummy and cool vibe. Definitely a fun photo spot with friends if you're into that, but regardless, a good place to order some donuts, coffee, and fried chicken. Reserved the "2D experience" for $26/person and had a great time! The place is beautifully and creatively decorated but a bit small, so while they do take a lot of walk-ins the wait can get long during the weekends, so I would highly recommend reserving online (you have to get the $26/person experience) so you can get a guaranteed seat at the time you want. While the 2D theme of the restaurant can seem a bit gimmicky, they do it very well, and commit from top to bottom. The entire restaurant is drawn and themed like a 2D black and white doodle, from the walls to the chairs to the boxes. Service was a bit slow as I think they are still figuring out how to balance all the reservations, walk-ins, and takeout orders, but we enjoyed all of the food we got. The big draw are the mochi donuts, which were fluffy and fresh, covered with an assortment of icings or toppings my favorite was the fresh strawberry and cream mochi donut sandwich!). For my deal I opted for the spicy chicken sandwich, which was suprisingly good; the portion of chicken was massive (maybe the biggest fried chicken sandwich portion I've ever had), and coated in a spicy sweet Korean inspired sauce. Our creme brulee late and fresh strawberry phin latte took a while to come out (they seemed pretty busy), but both were delicous and well balanced without too much sweetness. While it's not the type of place I'd come to every week, 2D is absolutely worth a visit to enjoy this quaint little space that is totally unlike anything else around Chicago! read more

We attended the Blue Man Group show and saw a video clip of the group visiting 2D Restaurant. I had heard about this place on TV before, so I decided to look it up on my phone. To my surprise, 2D Restaurant was just a block away from Briar Street Theatre. We decided to visit after the show. As we entered the restaurant, it felt like stepping into a drawing--the entire interior is designed in a 2D style with everything painted white and outlined in black, giving the impression of being in a comic strip. It reminded me of the "Take on Me" music video by a-ha, which added to the unique experience. The menu is conveniently located at the entrance, making it easy to see and order. They also display their main doughnuts, so you know exactly what you're getting. We ordered two doughnuts: the Choco Crumb and the Blue Man Doughnuts, along with a side of French fries. The fries were perfectly seasoned, but the doughnuts were the highlight. The Choco Crumb doughnut was incredibly soft and crunchy, with the chocolate crumbs adding an extra layer of flavor that made it extremely flavorful--definitely a 10 out of 10. We went here for breakfast - donuts and coffee. Let's get the food out of the way, the mochi donuts are delicious! Go have some! They are unlike any other donut I have ever had. Like real mochi, the inside is a different texture than the outside. Quite different, but very, very good. They also make their own fruit flavored milks here that they sell as a separate drink or use in their caphe drinks. I had a strawberry caphe, which is Vietnamese brew and their strawberry milk - very tasty and refreshing. The only thing that we didn't think was very good was the black brewed coffee. The black and white design for the restaurant is very unique. It makes you feel like you are in a B&W comic. It really makes the colorful mochi donuts pop when you get them out to your table. We stopped in just for carryout, which was a good thing: it's an interesting aesthetic, but we both felt a little overwhelmed by it. We ordered from a very helpful gentleman at a small window inside. We went with a couple very simple mochi donuts: the honey glazed and the churro. They were fresh and had a great texture, but were a little too plain. If you're looking for bigger flavors, the fancier ones are probably the way to go. Shout out to the nice guy working the window and serving tables on the Sunday we visited. I wish I caught his name. If you want to be ignored for two hours for a meal that should take half the time, this is the place for you. The place looks awesome and the food is pretty good (especially the chicken sandwich). All of that goodness gets weighed down by the worst service I've ever seen. The ordering model is actually easy to follow: pick a drink, a side, a protein, and a doughnut. That's where the fun stops. After placing your order you enter a customer service abyss. The restaurant staff actively ignores you, even when you're getting their attention because they've forgotten about your order (twice). The food comes out at uneven times. We got our drinks 10 minutes apart and our dessert came out before the main dish did. We also had to grab our own water and flag down support to clear our table. We paid extra for pictures and wound up taking our own because we couldn't get help. Everyone in that restaurant had similar experiences and it wasn't even that busy. This could be an amazing place, but they need someone who actually knows how to run a restaurant. I hope they find them. read more

Prebooked the 2D meal experience. If I had to do it over, i probably wouldn't chose that option. It's too much food. We prebooked to ensure we got a table and was able to experience the photo shoot. With that done, we were given our photo shoot tickets, told that it's best to do photos while waiting for our food. Didn't like having to go up to employees to ask how to go about the photos. It was congested at times because people were in line to order, right by our table, and people standing around for pics. Two drinks show up. We do pics (have to leave drinks) come back and our donuts are just sitting at table already. Then food shows up, and last drink. Gave my email to photo person, guess she is going to email our photos? Wondering how we get the printed pictures. It's on their advertising in restaurant and on website. We ask, how to be get our prints. Well, to get that you have to leave review on Yelp. Show them, and the you get the print. So they should update the signage and website if that's the case. Food - drink was okay, didn't have enough boba. At least not compared to every other boba tea I've ever had. Donut was okay, but didn't taste like Ube. Chicken sandwich was crazy messy but good. Such a cute space! I came on the weekend in the afternoon and was seated right away. The strawberry milk was delicious and was a little sweeter than I would have liked but amazing nonetheless less. What a cool concept! The whole restaurant looks like someone took a sharpie and drew everything from tables to chairs. The attention to detail is amazing and makes the place feel bigger than it actually is. My husband made a reservation for the photo session plus meal, which consisted of a specialty drink which includes tea and coffee, salad, your choice of chicken sandwich with fries, and a mochi donut. Everything tasted great and for the amount of food we got was priced really well. Afterwards, one of the kind staff members took pictures of us around the restaurant. They have a Parisian theme throughout and let you use props to give you the 2d effect. They printed the picture of our choosing and sent the rest to us. All in all a fun dining concept with great food. Just a tip that most days they close at 5 or 6pm so get there early. read more

I was underwhelmed. I would not return based on poor food and poor customer service. The decor is the main attraction. First, I was very disappointed generally. I went during the lunar new year and had an Instagram post that said the red envelope event ran through 2/18. We were there on 2/18 and were told that the event ended weeks ago. That lunar new year was over. I'm not sure if it was just a misunderstanding or if the post was wrong but I literally went specifically for the red envelope. Then we ate. The menu is small, which usually indicates the food will be amazing. It wasn't. I got the fried chicken and it was a lot of breading and dark meat pieces. The sauces looked so tasty but they weren't. We all ordered bubble tea and they brought it out very sporadically. I ordered before my sister and her kids and I ordered a mango green bubble tea. My nieces got their drinks first and then I was told they used the last of the green tea on my nieces drinks. That doesn't make sense if I ordered first. But whatever, I said I'd take oolong instead. This place was not really worth the hype to us. Especially if you are spending your money to eat here. But there are things to like about this place. The staff was friendly the day we ate there. And the place IS really cool inside and a fun place for photos. And very clean. The cat jello/puddings were a cute and fun menu item. The not-so-good. The food. The food doesn't look like the photos on their website. The chicken in the sandwich was half the size of what they advertise. And they were just ok. We each picked out a donut and they were dry and stale. We went a week after Christmas (Jan 1) and I'm pretty sure these were leftover from Christmas. None of us ate more than a bite of them. NOTE: make sure you make a reservation!!! We drove over 2 hours to get here. We went inside and asked for a table. The hostess asked if we had a reservation. We did not. She told us she would not seat us. I asked if there was any way to squeeze us in because we drove so far. She said no. And she was pretty curt- she clearly wanted us out of there asap. But... there was only one table with customers in there. The rest of the place was empty. It was confusing why they would not seat us. But we didn't argue, we just left disappointed. We would NOT have come back but my daughter picked lunch here as a Christmas present so we drove home and made a reservation for two days later and came back. The crazy thing is they were turning away walk-ins again while we were there and the place was almost empty.
