Be very wary of any transactions at this store: On 26 Feb I took in 7 bins of books and comics which I have been collecting since high school 36+ years 2 Mar go back to pick up my offer payout I was asked if I would take 100$ bills and I said yes I 100% believe I was slapped a fake movie prop 100$ bill and the employee pocket my real 100$ bill out of my offer, I mean where else would you come across that kind of item? I shoulda checked it but as soon as I saw the top bill, I place the money in my wallet and forgot about it until Friday. Noticed on Friday 7 Mar when I tried to deposit money in my bank's ATM That's when I took the bill and went back to speak to the manager CJ. He said we check all bills during all transactions - that's weird, the Sunday I picked up my offer the employee that paid me did everything autonomously. CJ also took down my cell number and said he had to contact his general manager and get back to me. This was Friday 7 Mar 24. He said he would do some investigating and call me back on Saturday 8 Mar 25. Then he said we'll make it right with either money or something. Here it is 17 Mar a week later and still no call. I stopped by the store to ask and it was like deer in the headlights. I gave them a chance to make it right. It's been over a month. I stopped back by the store at least 3 times to speak with CJ and he's never there! I Go figure! I've left my number again and again for him to call me and I get nothing. Don't go to this store, it's a scam and I hope it closes! One bad apple spoils the whole dam bunch. If you had this happened to you, please post! I want to expose this injustice. My family and I frequently shop this location as a family outing and we typically enjoy it. Yesterday was a different story. We were near the front of the store finishing up our shopping when we hear this woman speaking with a rude, loud tone. It was a worker berating an older black man. This worker was young looking, short pastel colored hair, glasses, female, and was yelling at the man as he was exiting the store. It seemed like there was a situation with this man wanting to sell some items. What happened to customer service? I was shocked at how rude this employee was. As the man was leaving, this woman alongside another woman with long brown hair was yelling at the man to get his items. The man, clearly flustered, left the store without getting his items. They then talked rudely about this situation in front of customers. I am just shocked by it all and will second guess next time choosing this place to frequent over Barnes and Noble now. read more

As a bit of a lifelong closeted fantasy and pop culture fan, I love that this store has come along. I just wish it had been around when I was a teen. I'm reminded of the Books-A-Million that once occupied the space and hosted regular Pokemon gym/league nights. The 2nd and Charles is a well-fitting replacement. This store (and any location, really) is fully loaded. I'm going to let this review be taken over by a huge list here that still doesn't capture everything. - tarot and oracle decks and books - spellbooks, metaphysical, witchcraft, runes - goblets, mugs, candles, sage, palo santo, incense, wind chimes, crystals - buttons, pins, keychains, jewelry, stickers - vinyl and CDs, used and new, and players - musical instruments (ukuleles, guitars, and more) - t-shirts, hats, backpacks, and socks - pop toys, squish mallows, stuffed animals - audio books and movie DVDs - majority of the store is books of all kinds - always worth a look at the clearance section - puzzles, board games, tabletop trading card games like MTG and Pokemon - children's toys, Legos, Nerf, action figures - calendars, planners, journals, inspirational wall hangings - manga, anime, comics (DC, Marvel, and more) - video games for all systems current and past - Fred and Kikkerland knickknacks - mystery mini boxes, pouches, gaccha collectibles - antique/linen postcards - fantasy dragon and fairy statues - fandom specific collectibles (Harry Potter, Disney, and more) Staff seems helpful and attentive. The store seems in constant disarray simply from the fact that there is so much variety. Literally nothing is fully alphabetized, and asking someone to look up an item you're searching for is mostly pointless beyond them being able to tell you it's most likely "somewhere" in the store. This is my biggest gripe here. However, if you're accustomed to searching through piles of random objects at places like thrift stores and secondhand stores, you may enjoy going on the hunt at this store too. They buy an array of pre-owned items here too. But worth noting that if you sell here in the morning then realize you forgot something and come back, they will not buy from you again in the same day. They lose stars for that inconvenience factor, too. I would imagine that based on need, they will buy anything that they would sell. I've personally sold Magic the Gathering cards at a different location before. Value given in store credit is higher than cash, but be prepared to feel ripped off either way. Prices on used items are decent, but on new it can often be huge compared to buying online ($60 vs $35 in one instance). This is otherwise a great store to burn time in reading and browsing. read more

If you're going to sell, be aware that they have a strict policy, where you must leave the books and wait for a call with the offer, and if you don't accept the offer in 24 hours, they will automatically give you a store credit and not the cash. They didn't say anything about that when I left the books. They called me with an offer yesterday at 10am, and when I called, they said they called me 3 days ago with the offer, when the only call I have from them is from yesterday at 10am, and in their voice message they didn't say anything about the 24-hour window either. I called today early in the morning but they where closed because they open at 10am, then I called in the afternoon and they said they automatically accepted the offer for me on Sunday and gave me store credit. I never accepted any offer!! I don't need more books, I wanted the cash. I can't back up now and get my books back, either, according to them. Also, I left 51 brand new books and I only received $42 in store credit. 80 cents per book in store credit??? So if it was cash that would be a few cents per book!!! There are much better options out there where they give you better price for the books and they give you the offer, cash or credit, right away so you can accept or reject the offer yourself. read more

Okay, so maybe you've noticed that I simply copied most of the sections down in the store...well maybe because it's not my first rodeo at a 2nd & Charles but it may be yours! Justified (ha, ha)! This place harkens back to the good old days of Borders, Barnes & Noble & Newbury Comics. Mix in a little Guitar Center, a dash of Hot Topic and stir in a clever gift shop and you have (imagine a Vanna White stance): 2nd & Charles. They buy books and you can get more for them if you take the store credit (see picture for more details). Also, you'll notice a "free bin" outside the store where the outcasts of outcasts go...actually my husband says he's found plenty of great books there. I like books but I mostly go because marriage is about compromise, right?! Usually I find myself wandering around towards the front where the journals are located or where my daughter leads me. Seriously, one could spend hours in this place! If you need a quick and diverse selection for a gift, go here. I've found some Etsy sellers represented from time to time. I can't speak to customer service because we didn't buy anything this time around. The only thing I dislike thus far, is the sheer amount of stuff in the store. It takes me a little while to get acclimated and steer clear of the bargain areas, as they tend to resemble the most chaos in the store. read more

I love this place despite the negative reviews others have left. There are many books to choose from, they have vinal, cds, dvds, comic books, retro games and consoles; toys, board games, and T-shirts, you name it. They've had deals on dvds, cds, and books. I got a pack of 8 dvds for $5! I was really disappointed in how expensive their vinal records are though. Second and Charles needs some major help. I love the records section but the used record prices are just crazy. Second as a book store the selection is very hit or miss. There are large gaps in many sections and they seem to focus on kiddie - teen books. Cd selection is lame. They have a gutar section and I don't really understand why. They are all over priced cheap first act style instruments. In all I have found a total of two books here. Ed McKay and the Trade it stores both beat this store hands down in price, trade in value and service. They did do a great job gluing books together to make the 2nd n Charles logo. As far as I know, it's the only comic book/video game/book/ video store in the Fayetteville area, at least the only one of this size. On a product side, I like this place. I enjoy their selection and pricing. The problem I have is their customer service. They are extremely terrible in that aspect. On a busy day I waited in line for my turn to realize walking out that I had been double charged. When I walked back inside, I was told to get my refund I would have to wait in the twenty person line I hag just waited in. I work in customer service and in this situation I would have either 1) put me as the next person in line at the register apologizing but getting me my refund or 2) called a manager to do it on one of the empty registers. Nope I had to wait another half an hour just to get my fifteen dollar refund. I just was in the store again and did my shopping only to get to the register to find out they are only accepting cash. When I asked him why there wasn't a sign he said "it just went down an hour and a half ago." That's plenty of time. I spent thirty minutes in that store to find out at the end I can't even check out. Terrible customer service. They needed to put a sign on the incoming door as soon as it happened or tell people in the store. Not many people carry enough cash to purchase a large item like that. I wish they'd get new management here because their associates need some training. read more

this particular 2nd & Charles is one of those stores that become a hit or miss. I have visited a handful of 2nd & Charles in different states and cities, this one isn't as well stocked as the others but you can't really blame them. I usually look for retro games and they seem to be priced at a fair rate. I have found many gameboy games at this specific location. Fayetteville doesn't have many stores like this, so I would definitely recommend this store to friends or family. read more

There is a lot to look at. This store used to be Books a Million, so it's quite large. I have never found anything I wanted to buy, though. I think a lot of the items are overpriced. Some dvds are brand new and $5 at Walmart, so they need to keep that in mind since they sell second hand. I was going to buy a book until I saw the $9 price tag. It was clearly a 20 year old book with an old $4 tag on it from another used book store. read more

I loved my visit here!! I found some really great bargain priced books and the customer service was awesome. The only downside is some prices are a little too much for second hand and used products. I buy alot of video games pre-owned and even for other stores, prices are less than the ones offered here. Kind of unfair and selfish to sell something at new price value.. I expected better from this establishment. Even the dvd's, novelty items and books come at a high price for a used product or even new merchandise. Just expensive. At first, I thought wow, this is nice. Found some cheap used books and than I felt like I was still at a barnes and noble for a moment. Hey, I understand their all about profit but at least have some deals for people who are willing to purchase more than one, two or even three of the same item. The best book store I've been to - clean, spacious, organized, with a fantastic selection including used books, vinyl, video games, comic books, everything I could be looking for in a store of this kind. Plus you can sell items and basically set your own discount in the store - which comes in handy when I'm looking to buy one of the brand new books or video game systems I've got my eye on. The thing that realy sets the store apart though is the customer service - you won't find anything of this quality at any other bookstore, from my experiences. read more

I have had no issues here the staff is good some of which are very knowledgeable if you need to find something specific they will check the computer for u a wide selection of books not the largest collection of comic books but they are there well organized alphabetically Marvel,Dc,indie they have a bunch of action figures,pops,a small clothing section consisting of anime clothings and other things a variety of posters to chose from etc. overall I would recommend going here read more

This is a good place to go for your book/movie/music/videogame fix. Huge selection new and used. My problem is that the last time I was in line to check out an employee was mocking the entire group of customers for being "nerdy" and she wasn't being discrete. Not a big deal to some but it's left a bad taste in my mouth and haven't been back in two months and more than likely won't go back for a while. The store generally carries pretty good finds. However, even though it claims to buy back books, and other items, even if your books are in better condition than theirs, they will give you even less than a gamestore would for games. Even though you purchased $60 worth of books and lovingly cared for with little to minimal wear and tear and absolutely no writing in it, (which is more to say than books they actually sell) they will only dish out maybe $3 and then turn around and sell your books for triple the price for each book. I've seen this done to many a friend of mine as well as myself. Customer service is awful, you get no help when needed and you're better off buying your books on Amazon. The reason it's given two stars is the movie section is pretty decent. read more

If you like books, don't mind reading a used book, and want low prices- you'll like 2nd and Charles. Books are arranged by type and alphabetically by author. On top of books they have a lot of records, CDs, and fan items. It's a good place to find something quirky for a fan boy/girl. The one downfall is it can be hard to find books given that the selection is so random. You need to give yourself some time to browse. read more

One star...I took my old box of DVD's to them. Bought over probably 300 DVD's, all in great condition and big hit cinema titles, but they would only take them if they were in their original case. It went from 300 to about 25. I still let them check out those few while I walked around. Their prices are ridiculously high/expensive. And I looked at everything. One section that I remember in detail was they had a USED PSP/ PlayStation Portable in the case for $100.00. That is crazy when the average price is $40-$60 dollars every where else. Lego were about a dollar an ounce. That's about 8 average size pieces for a $1.00. My wife looked at the toys and some books and she said that the toys were high and outdated and books were not good selection, but prices were not better then amazon. Honestly I don't know how they stay open. So when I got my number back to see what their offer was, they only brought me back the DVD's they wouldn't take. So you can't see what they are taking. They offered me around $15.00 store credit or $8.00 cash. Well I took the cash because, the only things I could afford in the store with $15.00 were a lollipop or about 120 pieces of legos. It wasn't worth the trip, but lucky I did find a $5.00 bill in the parking lot that made up for their terrible prices and offer. I miss Ed McKay's used books and more.... read more

The first time we came to this store it was a great experience, but every time since it has been getting worse. The customer service is severely lacking. The prices are out of control, they seem even higher then Amazon and eBay. But the customer service is the worst, I was looking at some of the items in the case and it took 20 minutes for someone to come over to help. I had to finally stop a floor person to ask to see an item. Then when i found an item on a shelf with no price the employee I took it to to ask for a price was very rude and it was WAY overpriced! I feel bad writing this review because I've been in management for 20+ years now but I'd rather be honest than not. I have nothing against anyone here and am not trying to be vindictive, but I think that it is necessary for me to say. I tried to take the customer service survey on the website but I can't provide a receipt number because I've never stayed long enough to make a purchase. Why? the manager here is condescending and weird towards me every time I visit this store. He's always talking himself up and tries to dumb me down whenever I inquire about something. Instead of helping me, he makes me feel stupid for not being tech savvy. My three boys do this enough already! I have tried several times to buy from here for my sons but he makes it extremely difficult to Want to purchase. The employees on the floor and elsewhere are always kind when I see them in passing.
