2nd & Charles is located among the stores of the Centre at Hagerstown. It was previously a Borders and its neighboring stores include Marshalls and HomeGoods. This store is supposed to be one of the smallest in the chain, but doesn't show it. Large selection of books, comics, DVD/Blu-ray's, and toys/collectables. If you don't know about 2nd & Charles, most of the items are used trade-ins from other customers, so you can never be sure what will be in stock. We had several questions about prices of items behind the counter which were quickly answered and the employees were helpful. Had a good selection of Manga but a smaller selection of Anime DVD/Blu-ray's. A large selection of comic longboxes were available, but per other 2nd & Charles their organization was not the best. Overall, store was clean and organized with an on-par selection of items compared to other stores. I would return here again. read more

Selling books for more than you can purchase brand new elsewhere. For a second hand store I find that pretty silly. Just be careful you get your money's worth and don't end up paying more for a used item. The best part of this location is Shailene. She is helpful and knowledgeable. Three stars for her. read more

I am a bit of a Funko Pop fanatic and have traveled from Baltimore to Frederick looking for different ones on my wish list. I have traveled to Gettysburg, PA and Leesburg, VA multiple times to find pops! I didn't realize that Hagerstown had this little gem! 2nd & Charles has an amazing Funko Pop selection! I am able to find items that I haven't been able to find anywhere else! They also sell different items that I can use in my classroom. In addition to the stock, the staff is very friendly! Can't help but love this store. They have a huge selection of books, movies, games, comics, and toys. You can trade in your used stuff for in store credit. I love talking to staff. Always had genuinely enjoyable conversations with them. They host some interesting events and parties. One that stands out is a midnight release of the 8th Harry Potter book which was just plain fun. I'm docking a star because I don't feel the credit is ever really a fair price considering what you are turning in. But other than that the store is great. One thing to note. They do not offer shopping bags so you will need to bring your own bags unless you are able to carry what you purchase out with you by hand. Sadly this is something I rarely remember to do and always seem to have to leave with a heavy pile of books fumbling around in my arms. read more

I came here recently to trade in an entire series worth of dvd's being 9 seasons and 292 episodes. When you go to the counter they place your purchase in a bin and have you take a ticket to come back to the buyout desk. It takes about 20 minutes...kind of long but hey, it can be a lengthy process and things could be wrong with your merchandise so, no big deal. After browsing the selection in the stores the games for older systems has practically no new selection of good games whatsoever, i'd been in 9 full months ago and came back to the same exact stock and selection. Anyhow, used the bathroom while i was waiting and it was clean and smelled like fruit snacks. Nice. Here's the bad part. It was probably around the 25 minute mark that i had been waiting when I happened to glance at the employee behind the counter, who took the merchandise i wanted to sell. He sees me glance at him, and immediately starts a convo with his cowroker stating "It really creeps me out when people look at me, because they're been waiting a while, you know?" To which his co worker responds "yeah its completely absurd, not like staring at us will make the process any quicker". He then continued to state "This is a good day today, you'd have to be insane to think this is slow service" So here we have blatant crap-talking by employees who discreetly try to tell you off if you glance at them (they must get this a lot for it to be a complaint). Hey, to be truthful, your process is quite long compared to about every other retailer who offers the same services in the area. They can't give your prices over the phone, and the next reason why i rated 2 stars gave away why. They cover it with some "law" excuse but in actuality they have horrible trade in prices. For the 292 episode, NINE SEASON collection, they offered me a measley $30. I immediately rejected the offer, having wasted gasoline and time (because of their little phone policy) and left. 2 stars instead of 1 because the bathroom smelled like fruit snacks. read more

We love this place. We traded in about forty books for $17 cash or $80 in store credit! That's a lot more than Wonderbooks (who only offered us $7, period.) $80 in store credit is A LOT to use in an amazing place like this. It's the only used book store that I've been to that actually has books organized by author and genre instead of just in piles that one has to dig through. All of the books are usually less than $10 and there's even a whole wall of clearance, as if the prices weren't already low enough. Also, there's more than just books. Video games, vinyl records and DVS as well as tiny gagsets and gifts that are great holiday gifts or stocking stuffers. read more

This review will mainly focus on their record selection. 2nd & Charles is not the best place to go if you are looking to add a record to your collection. Usually, their used albums are overpriced and in rough shape. New pressings are usually priced okay. Again, their used records are not priced well. For example, they were selling a dirty, moldy, scratched Harry Nilsson LP for $25. I found the same record in Frederick for $7 without scratches and I have seen similar ones in DC go for around $14-$17 if they're close to mint. Records aside, they have a good selection of used books and fun totebags. I'd go back for books, but would save my money by not buying any record albums. read more

There are so many books, movies, games and cds. They have guitars, vinyl, and classic games such as sega, atari and the original nintendo. They even have a section devoted to buybacks. Its very clean an organized. There are carts outside for free books. The vision the owner had is excellent. I would have given 5 stars if the associates were friendly/ greeted me. We have been taking books to trade for years & they have never been speedy, but this weekend was the worst experience yet. We checked in 2 totes of books. They almost immediately began processing them, but due to poor staffing & bad management this process took over 1 & 1/2 hrs to complete. For almost the entire time we were there, only one person was processing the books. This person was also responsible to: check incoming books in, inform customers of results on processed books, return unwanted books, help anyone with items in the display cases, answer questions about the items, and more. For much of the time no one was actually working on our books. At one point we asked the status of our books, as our # did not appear on either the completed or working on lists. At that point we were told the guy, who was currently with a customer at the case, was working on them. Shortly after, he left for break and another person took over. Since she was by herself most of the time, and spent most of that time at the counter or cases, an hour later they were finally done. We were told it is the time of year that caused the delay, but clearly, since they started working on our books almost immediately, the real issue was not the large number of people who came in after us. The real issue is understaffing. Also, this is not the first time this has occurred. At our last visit, approximately a month or so ago, we also waited an hr, as the staff was too busy "going back to get pizza." read more

This was a unique bookstore to visit when I swung through town. I really enjoyed strolling through it and looking at everything. They had a large selection of books and unique little trinkets. Definitely worth a stop by for any book lovers looking for a pit stop. read more

I love spending time here. Big comic and manga fan and they have a pretty good selection. I usually look for used graphic novels and they always have a good selection. I also collect funko pops which they also have a nice section of. Have gotten collectibles on sale a couple of times at really good prices. Some stuff are overpriced in my opinion. Bathrooms are clean and employees don't ask too much if I need help which is ok with me cause that kinda bothers me sumtimes lol. Just let me browse and I'll look for help if I need it. Never got a game or traded stuff here so those things weren't considered while writing this review. Also I have kids and they almost always find sumthing for me to buy them. Remember to always check prices between used and new. It will save u money. read more

Good selection of comics, but the employees are quite clueless about their inventory. I asked them if they had any judge dredd comics ( I collect them), and the guy told me he knew he had them, but had no idea where they went. He also told me the reason the comics are so cheap was because he didn't feel like looking up the price of them (which could be a good or a bad thing). He did make up for it by showing my boyfriend some really badass punisher comics. The movies are almost always nasty and scratched up, but you can inspect them which makes it a little better I guess. As another poster said, the records here suck. They are way over priced for the quality. The people at the desk just watched me stand there waiting to ask a question, and didn't even ask if i needed help. Very strange. Over all this store is pretty good, but could improve. read more

Recently had two boxes of books (about 50) and a couple nintendo ds games that I didn't have room for in my house anymore. I took the books to the nearest Wonderbooks store who promptly offered me $2 for everything. My friend told me to check out 2nd and Charles before I donated everything to Goodwill. He also told me to check for mold on the books because they will refuse your entire trade in if *ONE* book has mold, so that is definitely worth noting. I took my two boxes of books in. (I consolidated them out to one bin, because the store only takes one bin of trade a day) The trade-in process takes awhile, but I didn't notice because I was lost browsing in the store. (Books, Comics, Video games, Movies, Vinyls/CD's with an awesome selection) In the end they offered me $75 more dollars than Wonderbooks did. This is in Trade, they offered half of that amount in cash. I used the trade immediately to pick up a like-new game console. I would definitely recommend it and go there again. read more

If you know Half Price books it is very similar. - Looks like they buy the gimmicky stuff that the main line bookstores can't sell or didn't sell all of - like Big Bang Theory magnets, diaries of various types, t shirts from diff bands, overseas quirky candy etc... - Large children book selection - large comic section - there was about 50 books on cd available - they have a lot of DVDs but not a wide selection of series DVDs - I only saw two British series DVDs - I didn't find the CD or a book I wanted but I did come away with 3 books on cd and 1 book - it is a little hard to find the diff sections once your in the stacks. There was a listing map but I only saw it once all the way in the back. - A new store assoc did ask if I needed help and had to go ask co workers where to find the parenting section but he stated he had just started. I wish I had gotten his name, he was very nice and helpful. Unfortunately the parenting section didn't have any books on adoption stories section and the ones I was able to find amongst the parenting section was about 4 so that was disappointing. Wish the books with an adoption theme were sectioned out like the ones on medical disorder or educational issues. read more

Shopped here many times and every time get more irritated watching these geeks rip off kids with there low ball offers on their games then get on their computers and mark them up 300% of what they paid for them. when is shops like this going to learn that charging online prices for games in local situations don't work. I bought 2 brand new games off there 50% off table the last time in only to find out I could get the same 2 games cheaper on ebay then their sale price. they don't even supply bags for your orders which you would think that they would pass that savings onto the customers but they don't. read more

I would not go here if you want to trade stuff in for cash. I recently took 12 books some of which were brand new. They said that they could only give me $6 for all 12 books. I asked why so low and they told me that it depends on their inventory. So I walked around and looked for the books that I took in and they didn't even have all the ones I gave. And I say gave because there was at least $100 worth of books there. I would buy stuff from them but I wouldn't sell to them. read more

When I went in on a Saturday afternoon with my 11 year old nephews, they had no idea what they were looking for and were quickly frustrated.
