I stopped by Four Seasons Books to do a little browsing after lunch when I was exploring Shepherdstown a few weekends ago (a local had recommended it). I was really surprised by it! It's larger than it looks from the outside (there's even an upstairs with used/old books that would be easy to miss, since the staircase is sort of hidden behind a wall of the shop), and they have a pretty great selection for a small independent bookshop. I just needed one book (I thought I might finish the memoir I'd brought with me on my weekend trip to the area), but I left with...3? I can't even remember. I kept finding more intriguing books! It's charming, has a great inventory, and seems a great shop! With so many independent and even chain bookstores closing, it feels like a lot of towns/neighborhoods don't have a bookshop anymore. Shepherdstown residents are lucky to have a shop as wonderful as Four Seasons - a place big enough that you can browse and find a book you didn't even know about before you wandered in. Really a charming shop. I'd happily return if I make to Shepherdstown again! read more

Four Season Books is always one of the first places I visit when in Shepherdstown, WV. The staff is always super friendly and the selection is top notch. Be sure to check out the upstairs and peruse the many used books available for purchase. It's rare that I leave the store without buying a book and you'll probably do the same. What a gorgeous bookstore. So beautifully laid out. Whoever helped with the designing of the store should be in interior designing themselves. I love the separate rooms and the table in the center displaying some goodies. The staff was also really friendly. I loved the local author section, I haven't seen that too much and I think it's a wonderful idea. Right when you enter you'll find some books about West Virginia and national parks. Some historic, some current, some goofy and I loved all of them. The children section is in the back and I could see kids having a blast back there, a little world of their own. This is a beautiful addition to the town with some unique books and much more. read more

Maybe this is a pleasant place to visit in person, but if you are thinking about ordering something from their website don't bother. I ordered a copy of an IN STOCK book, not a preorder, and this shop did not ship it until after I emailed multiple times, opened a PayPal dispute, escalated the dispute, and commented on an employees Facebook post. At that point I had purchased the book elsewhere and requested to cancel the order. Instead they refused to cancel and provided tracking only after I had been forced to go out of my way to force them to ship it. Their response now it to say it's in their business terms and conditions that they don't cancel orders, but that doesn't change the fact that they were going to keep my money and never ship anything until I filed a claim and posted on social media. When I commented on the employees social media post about the book I ordered and never received she told me all signed copies of that book were shipped. Clearly they were out of stock now so who knows where they magically came up with a signed copy of a book that was flying off the shelf when I ordered it. If you choose to order from them be sure to use PayPal. You won't get a refund but they will be forced to actually ship your item weeks after you order. read more

Friendly service and good selection for this small, local bookstore. Didn't have two I was looking for but I was able to order and get a text within the week. I did find a new hard cover for the meantime. Every time I walk in I think of Bay Books in John Grisham's Camino Island series. The staff here are AWESOME. I got Covid when I was in Shephardstown and hadn't packed enough books for staying longer to isolate, and I also didn't have a car. Four Seasons helped me out by finding things on my to-read list (including checking all their used stock), recommending additional titles based on my interests, and then dropping them off locally. I love bookstores and this is a great little one. I love when a bookstore has an obvious bias of the owner and not just bestsellers. I loved perusing the books and being allowed to do so at my leisure. If I lived nearby I would make this a regular hangout. As I was on the road, I didn't want to add to my reading bag. So I bought terrific greeting cards. It was the least I could do to support an independent book store. Yay reading! read more

It goes without saying that the age of Amazon has seen the demise of many a local, independent bookstore. Amazon has succeeded in part because it promised a breadth that small booksellers couldn't offer, and because its distributed "community" of reviewers seemed more viable than the real, but dwindling, communities of bibliophiles that once coalesced around the local book shop. Rather than launching into an elaborate defense of local bookstores, I'd invite anyone to step into this small store and see why it has remained animate while others have perished. It does not contain every title ever published; what it does have is a thoughtful, varied and smart collection of books assembled by a staff of diverse tastes and interests. It's the store I go to when I'm looking for something new and compelling, or a gift for someone "difficult." It's where I seek literary inspiration. The store features "staff picks" with short summaries, local writers and topics, and an admirable collection of various genres - truly something for every reader of every age. Some used books are available, as well as some paper goods including cards and journals. If they don't have a book in stock, they'll happily order it for you. Overall, this is a great shop, and I'm happy that they've been able to thrive while others have foundered. read more

Adorable bookstore with decent selection of books; great service and prices are similar to what you'd pay anywhere else. They sell other novelties as well (e.g. gift cards, small gifts, fun odds & ends for children, etc.). I'm always a fan of intimate, family-owned bookstores over the big, crowded places. read more

I love this book store for the fact that it seems to know my secret book desires. Let me explain. Each time I go in, there's a book on one of their shelves that I hadn't seen in real life anywhere other than Amazon. And by anywhere I mean the library, Barnes and Noble, other bookstores (used or otherwise), you name it. When I go to Four Seasons, there's my elusive, hard to find, but there it is in the pulp, book for me to pick up. Even in the age of Kindle, I need to touch and feel the book spine. To skim not the first chapter (as Amazon forces you through their preview) but to randomly pick a chapter and see if I vibe with the author like I thought I would. By bonding in this way, I sometimes find I love the book like I knew I would and buy it right there. I let the owner, Cat, know about the telepathic nature of her store and she says she tries to keep different books out there. Well, she succeeds. read more

Break your Kindle, snap your Nook over your knee......and come on down. Ahhh real books....!! This place is really quite excellent and the staff are very smart and informed. They have a good mix of new and old, inexpensive books if you need a good read in the back under Used Books. This really is a terrific book store with a wonderful selection of books - I love visiting it and try to as much as I can. My only wish is that the inside could reflect a bit more the loveliness of the selection of books...the carpet is pretty gross and the wall colors all over the place. New flooring and some simple paint colors would do wonders for this place. read more
