It feels tucked away from the bustle of Old Montreal and, once the lights came on, had a really warm, relaxed atmosphere. Most importantly, nobody seemed remotely concerned that a tiny Italian Greyhound had joined the dinner party. I was welcomed right in. Mum ordered the trout over couscous, which looked extremely impressive. She did give me some of the trout. Dad ordered the steak frites. I repeat: Dad ordered steak. At a dog-friendly restaurant. While sitting next to a dog. He did not share. I feel like we've covered this issue before. Dad had wine, Mum had a Diet Coke, and I spent much of dinner curled up comfortably with Mum while monitoring the steak situation. There were developments. None favorable to me. But Wolf & Workman is exactly the kind of place we're always hoping to find when traveling: somewhere the humans don't have to compromise on having a genuinely great dinner just because I'm with them. While I am not a beer person myself, I'll have a round or two if I'm with a group, and can appreciate a good brewery. My first impression of Dieu du Ciel was just that - the vibes were on walking in. The space is pretty large - kinda separated into semi- compartmentalized spaces with tables throughout. There's not much decor, but medium-toned woods throughout which gave it a sort of upscale feel. They offer a food menu, but we were just here for drinks. They have a really wide selection of beer - again, I'm no connoisseur, but I could tell that the selection was way more than other breweries I've been to. I ended up getting a cider for the first round and a stout for my second round - both very good. Service was great, and overall we enjoyed our time at Dieu du Ciel. Their selection and comfortable setting made it a standout brewery for me out of the ones I've visited in Montreal - I wouldn't hesitate to return.

But before even checking in, we had to walk through Bar George ~ and instantly knew we wanted to eat there. We were lucky enough to grab a last-minute reservation, and Julien took a good care of us throughout the evening. His recommendation of the Beef Wellington was spot on (it's already one of our favorite dishes), but this was hands down the best we've ever had. I ordered the lobster risotto, which was excellent with just the right amount of spice. My son had the 10 oz striploin steak with homemade fries (chips), and it was absolutely delicious. I also loved the Canadian touch of coarse salt on the steak, plus the option to choose between Béarnaise or peppercorn sauce. Julien also mentioned their pastry chef placed second in a NY competition, and the desserts absolutely lived up to that reputation. We tried the pineapple and coconut pavlova and the "lick me hazelnut" ~ both beautifully presented and incredibly delicious. We also ordered iced coffee and a latte, and noticed something interesting: this was the second place where we found Canadian coffee to be smooth and mild ~ such a nice change from the often bitter, over-roasted American coffee. Yes, dinner was a bit steep ($300+), but it was worth every penny. Between the rich history, stunning design, outstanding service, and unique cuisine, I would highly recommend Bar George. My friends and I went to this pub as a portion of our celebrating one of their birthdays this evening. For context I and my friends are in our late 30s to early 40s, and we had beforehand gone to another establishment but the temperature was unbearable as they did not have air conditioning so we sought out an alternative and chose Mckibbin's. Funnily enough, Mckibbin's didn't have AC either but we ended up staying for a few drinks regardless, mostly to appreciate the live music which was quite good. The waitress was good as well, quick and friendly, we had a minor snafu with a couple of the drinks which were not to our liking but the bar graceously replaced them which is yet another solid point in their favor. Why, you might ask in that case, would I be rating this establishment one star then? Well it all comes down to how we ultimately exited the establishment. We all paid our tab at the table, and finished up the rest of our drinks, still enjoying the music playing. It was a great band by the way, I just have to say. We all ended up leaving after 10-15 minutes and all seemed well, except it was only once we're outside that I found out that apparently one of our group who had gone to the bathroom had been victim of a rather apauling scenario. He had been in the stall for 10 or so minutes (he was doing what he had to do .. sometimes nature calls), and was interrupted by a knock on his stall only to hear the bouncer tell him he had to pay and get out of the bar immediately. The bouncer aparrently had heard him "sniffing" his nose in the stall, and found that to be appropriate reason enough to accuse him of doing cocaine in the stall, and to force him out of the bar. Of course it did not cross his mind to think that perhaps it had something to do with the bar being at approximately 29 degrees, perhaps my friend simply had a stuffy nose, or perhaps he had allergies, no he heard a few sniffles and that was all he needed to throw out allegations. Needless to say, I'm completely and utterly disgusted having learned this. Ultimately we left and let things be, we weren't about to bust back in there and cause disruption for no reason we were already on our way out anyway, but to think that this man, employed by this establishment, could be so outlandishly shortsighted is a true injustice. Suffice to say, my friend has never done cocaine in his life, we quite literally made jokes about this man's accusations the whole ride home. Still, I will never go back to this place, because I shudder to think of myself in his situation and what I might do, how it would make me feel to be on the bad end of this kind of person's shortsighted and unfounded accusations. That said, I urge anyone and everyone to beware of the types of people this establishment has working under its payroll. Most of their staff (everyone else in-fact) were excellent, but unfortunately it only takes one completely rotten apple to ruin the bunch.

Personally I like fruity mixed drinks that don't taste like alcohol. My friend is a scotch drinker and goes for stronger drinks. We both were able to find something that made us happy. La Distillerie does mixed drinks like no other. They also do it with a heavy hand so while it may seem pricy to some, you definitely get what you pay for. My friend and I had some beer before arriving and then two drinks each here and both walked out very much not sober. The vibe is chill and a bit nostalgic and the menu options are exceptional. Definitely one of the best bars I have been to!

Brutopia is practically next door to our temporary Montreal headquarters, so I suspect I will be conducting extensive research here over the next two weeks. Our first visit happened on a rainy evening, which immediately demonstrated Brutopia's greatest feature: DOGS. ARE. ALLOWED. INSIDE. Finally, a country that respects my social calendar. Brutopia is much bigger than it first appears. Once inside, there are multiple rooms with different types of seating, giving it that cozy, rambling pub feeling where you could easily find your own little corner and settle in for the evening. But despite the rain, Mum and Dad decided we should investigate the upstairs outdoor patio. Excellent decision. It's a really cool space with a huge colorful mural, hanging plants and a slightly greenhouse-y feel. Add in the fact that they sometimes have live music, and I can already tell this is going to become one of our neighborhood hangouts. Mum ordered a Caesar salad with bacon. I would like everyone to focus on one particular word in that sentence. BACON. I positioned myself appropriately. I stared. I waited. I even wore a hoodie to dinner, so frankly I don't know what more was expected of me. Meanwhile, Mum and Dad enjoyed a couple of drinks while I relaxed and took in the scene. I really liked the vibes as soon as we entered - the place isn't too large, but still spacious enough to have two semi-split up rooms. We stayed in the front room that housed the bar, some tables, as well as a small stage where (I assume) live music plays. The decor had somewhat of a music theme, as one of the walls was covered in pictures of famous artists. We had a round - I'm not the biggest beer person but had a cider which was good. We also split a poutine - we opted for the popcorn chicken one which was tasty. Everyone was really friendly, and we were even talking it up with a fellow patron who was also from New York. Service was great, and although it was only a short stay, I had a good experience at Brutopia. I wouldn't hesitate to return next time I'm in the area.
