Great experience at 340 Defense. From top to bottom. Great range, great staff, great RSOs, and even the other patrons were relaxed and friendly. Shout out to Robert the RSO for coming by and chatting, and giving me tips on how to zero my rifle. Didn't catch the name of the guy at the counter, but he was great too. Me and my wife went for the non-member, hourly rate. We probably spent about 3 hours there ($45/hour, per person), but he ended up only charging me for the time, and said my wife didn't have to pay "since she didn't shoot too much" (although she definitely did). Ranges were at 15 yards, 50 yards, 100 yards, and 300 yards (members only for the 300 range). Site had restrooms and water. Don't see how anyone could have a bad time here. RSOs were extremely chill and were always respectful (unlike RSOs at other ranges I've been to). Ranges were very cooperative, unlike anything I've seen at other places. Patrons are largely in control of going hot and cold, as long as every just gives the thumbs up, they're not timed or anything. Will definitely return, and probably look to become a member. They offer veteran discounts on membership too. read more

New to the area, I decided to try this facility out. The previous reviews were not very helpful, so my daughter and I went in not expecting much. Well to my great pleasure the staff at front desk was extremely inviting, explained everything explicitly well, the facilities are excellent well maintained and organized. The RSO was quite knowledgeable and helpful. We spent a couple hours and we were impressed! Purchased a family membership and will be regulars from now on. FYI the ownership recently changed and not sure how it was before but this group seems to have there ducks in a row! The training range is separate so there is no scheduling issues of the ranges if they are open you can shoot! I highly recommend this friendly, clean and well organized facility! read more

I have visited this range many times to shoot. Please peruse my reviews... I am clearly not a bot. Perhaps if 340 comes under new management or ownership, it will improve? As it stands, as of 11/2018, I do not recommend this range for a variety of reasons (safety culture, professionalism of range staff, quality of facilities, etc) read more

Been here about a dozen times now. Always a good experience. Several nice ranges. Plenty of wood for setting up your targets. Pistol range has steel plates. The store inside has targets and cardboard and some goodies. They rent a few guns. Have only dealt with one man, John, and he's always polite & professional. The shooting benches are well protected from the elements. The rifle ranges require you to sit at a bench while shooting. You wont be able to see the targets otherwise. Owner has had too many issues with people overshooting the berms so he put a low ceiling limiting your view. Only downside of 340 Defense is the restroom on site is a porta-potty. Recommend you take care of business at home before visiting. read more

I had the most horrible one hour experience at the 340 range today. I have shot there several times without any issues. The RSO was so full of himself it was a complete train wreck. First thing through the door the clerk had a serious attitude considering they changed the membership guest policies designed to rip off the consumer. When setting up on the range today the RSO was completely disrespectful, rude and aggressive with me and the members of my group. I have been shooting for 50 years and know how to handle many calibers. I have always practiced safety with the utmost importance. Myself and the 3 other people in my group were constantly harassed to the point the RSO created a stressful and hostile environment to the point we stoped shooting for the remaining time we had. The RSO was also a thief and collected all my brass then lied about it when I asked him if he took my brass. The RSO erupted and made a huge scene with me. A person in my group saw him picking it up after we told him we reload. The RSO gets right in back of a person shooting to collect brass and to rudely and loudly bust every move you make. I had to ask him several times to back away from me. The RSO also argued with me about an imaginary line where the firing line starts and stops once leaving the covered pavilion. There is no marked line or gate next to the pavilion. I have serious safety issues with the safety of the facility and RSO. The RSO called the line cold we attempted to enter the range to put up targets and RSO goes off screaming he did not open the range after 8 people heard him say it was cold. Then loudly insinuated that we were all wrong. I will be following up with the NRA and the State of WV and WV State police to give a complete detailed report of today's experience. The range needs sanctioned and the RSO on duty needs to have his certification revoked. read more

Not a lot of signage marks the entrance to this outdoor range. Once you pull up, the small office is to the right. The staff was very friendly and helpful, and the range officers had everyone's safety in mind, and even gave some helpful advice. This range is not as structured as I am used to, but a great time was had by all. I was very pleased with the steel gong setup on the short pistol range, as that gave me an opportunity for some good practice. read more

A buddy and I headed out to 340 Defense to zero our rifles and for some trigger time. It isn't easy finding an outdoor range that can provide KD targets 100-400 yards in the Northern Virginia and surrounding areas. We decided to give this range a try and we're glad we did. The staff were extremely friendly and accommodating. He spent a few minutes providing an overview of the shooting areas, hourly/annual cost, and target purchases. It took me about 2 minutes to fill out a few forms and I was ready to shoot. One of the nice features with this range is that the shooting bench is covered, which is good because it was raining on our trip. There's nobody breathing down your back - shooters use common sense and police their own area. The overall cost ($80/two people) wasn't too bad for an hour of range time and two paper targets. We considered becoming annual members, but wanted the ability to shoot a few times on the range before locking into a long term commitment. I am sure we will be back and will most likely become annual members so we can have unlimited range time. So if you're in the area and looking for a pistol/rifle range, this is definitely a good place to keep in mind. read more

My friend and I were passing through and decided to pop in. While the establishment is primarily a private club, Mark and his wife were very accommodating and just really cool people. There were 4 different ranges, starting at 15 yards and ending with something like 300-400 yards. Even if you don't have your own firearms, you can rent anything from a .22 to an AR-15 and purchase ammo as well. Property was beautiful. I'll most certainly be stopping on my next trip down south. read more

i have serious concerns about safety practices in this gun range. 340 defense encouraged me to sign up for one year unlimited membership even if they knew that i had no experience with firearms! while i had no formal training and zero experience with guns, my visits to the gun range were frequent and mostly unsupervised. one day, i was told that someone had shot a cartridge through the roof and they do not know who it was or how it happened. 340 defense owner, mark odell, and his wife, yvonne, even tried to blame this on me. fools. but any sensible person would understand that safety measures should be implemented especially in a gun range... or risk compromising people's safety. so, it's really not surprising when accidents happen at 340 defense. luckily, no one was shot. this place is open to the public and there's no vetting process. there are no requirements to undergo firearms training before becoming a member. 340 defense shooting range is open for business to anyone who can pay. owners, mark odell and yvonne devereaux just love $$$$$$! i paid for 12 months unlimited access to the gun range and only used this for 5 weeks. after i'd paid $300. for membership, mark suddenly required me to undergo professional gun training or i could no longer use the gun range... he bullied and ripped me off then said i could still "hang out" there and that he would "spank" me if i did not get training. yuck! eeeks! ptooey! i canceled membership soon after but mark odell refuses to give me a refund despite repeated attempts to recover this. read more

I've been a member at 340 Defense for two years now, and I love the place. I live in Fairfax, so yes, it is a hike to get out there (about an hour), but it's a beautiful drive, and it's worth it at the end. The greatest things going for the 340 Defense range are the facts that it's outdoors, and the people who run it are nice, helpful folks. I've shot at most of the indoor ranges in the DC area (NRA, SEG, Blue Ridge Arsenal), and while any day on the range is a good day, the atmosphere of an indoor range is inherently toxic. Plus, it always seemed that the guy in the slot next to me had some AR cannon with a muzzle brake that would blow my target down. At an outdoor range, the breeze filters the air, and there are no walls to amplify the sound. 340 Defense is what I call a range for grown-ups. There are RSOs, but each firing line calls its own hot and cold range. As far as I can tell, you can shoot whatever kinds of targets you want--though I don't think they allow exploding targets (I've never asked). Want to shoot a watermelon? Help yourself. Just clean it up afterwards. They've also got a selection of steel targets on the pistol range. I buy the $400 family membership because I shoot a lot. Pay the one fee, and then you can spend as much time on the range, as many days as you want for no additional fee. Last time I was there, in mid-March, I saw for the first time that they have an FFL on premises, but since I live in Virginia and the range is in West Virginia, that won't affect me. read more

Have had an unlimited annual membership (approx. $300/year) here for a 2-3 years now. For the first couple of years it was great and I enjoyed stopping by to shoot whenever I was visiting the area. However, available services have declined (400 yard range no longer available). Also, you may not be able to shoot even with a membership if they are teaching a course during normal business hours. I recently showed up on a Saturday morning and had to wait an hour to use the range because a class was being taught. I was not happy considering it's a 90-minute drive from the DC area just to get there. Definitely rethinking my membership...why pay for an annual membership if you can't actually access the range. In the interest of full disclosure, when I complained, the staff pointed me to the fine print in the membership agreement that states classes may take precedence. read more
