I had a new medical ID bracelet with a non-working clasp. The owner of 3rd street helped me immediately, showed me why it wasn't working and tried to fix it... then tried again until he was successful. he then took the time to show me how to work the clasp (took several tries)....when I asked what I owed him he said "nothing, I can't guarantee it will work... just common courtesy." this is always my experience here... honesty and skill. by the way the clasp works fine! I'm sad to say I went in for a temporary ring guard for my engagement ring and left with gauges/deep cuts in my ring. When I noticed it I called him and asked about it and he just said there's nothing to worry about and it'll be fine. Not a single apology. Yes the ring can be polished and hopefully the deep cuts can be fixed, but he didn't offer any solutions. What is sad is that a jeweler should handle jewelry delicately and treat it like their own. Not only are they expensive items but they're sentimental and of irreplaceable value, meant to last a lifetime. If I wanted my ring wrongfully handled I would not have chose to go to a jewelry place. And his customer service to people on the phone and me after payment was so poor, so rude, snarky and condescending. I wouldn't go back to this place even if I were paid to. THEY WILL MAKE IT WORSE! I went in on Saturday to repair a broken piece of hinge for my metal watch clasp. Though it was still usable, thought it would be nice to get it fixed. 3rd Street Jeweler repaired it with a weld. I was happy to get it back the same day until I couldn't get the clasp to release a few hours later. I panicked as I was scheduled to work the next day on Sunday and could not have any jewelry on my hands or arms. The shop was closed so I called all over town and was grateful that Bella Luna was still open. They also struggled with the clasp and eventually got the watch off by popping out a pin. The weld created an awkward angle causing the latch to not release when it's on the wrist! I called 3rd street jeweler the next business day on Tuesday. They refused to accept responsibility for the lousy repair by arguing that because the weld didn't break apart, it's not their fault. I wish I never walked away into that shop. Now I've lost $30 and gained a more broken watch. read more

So, I ask my husband what he'd like for his birthday. His reply of a new car was not in my budget. Then I remember that every vacation for the last couple of years he's stopped at jewelry stores to window shop watches. I had a general idea of what he would like and stopped by 3rd Street Jeweler. Nothing currently in stock met my husbands wishes but I chatted with Frank, the owner, about what I was looking for. He said he had a couple at his other store that sounded like good possibilities. Frank left a very cute indirect message for me "The items are here" I took a look at them and decided I needed to bring the husband by for him to choose and give him his gift early. I hate to say it, but I will never take another piece of jewelry to 3rd Street Jewelers. Both of the rings I took in were messed up. First off, I took in my husband's wedding ring to be resized (a little smaller), not a difficult request. I was sure to tell the jeweler (the owner, I can't remember his name) that the ring had engraving on the inside and we wanted to make sure that it was preserved and wasn't ruined in the re-sizing process. He assured me that with the way they size the rings no gold is lost or taken out, so the engraving would be unharmed. Wrong. When I picked up the ring and looked at it closer when I got home, the engraving was barely visible anymore. My husband was actually pretty upset about it. We will now have to take it back to our original jeweler in San Francisco to have it redone. For the second ring, I had a very delicate diamond band ring with several tiny diamonds (almost like an eternity band, but not all the way around) that had lost a diamond and I needed to have it replaced. It was the very last diamond in the row, so I thought this shouldn't be too difficult. First of all, he did not match the size of the diamond to the size of the rest of the diamonds. The stone he used to replace it is much smaller than the originals. While I admit that this is a very small, delicate ring, he was obviously not able to do this kind of work because the gold setting around the new diamond looks nothing like the settings of the other diamonds. It just looks like blobs of gold and looks sloppy. Again, this ring will be going back to the original jeweler now to be repaired yet again...I was very disappointed by the work done here to say the least. I'd definitely recommend going elsewhere for jewelry repairs (especially if they are detailed or intricate). Better quality is definitely worth the extra drive. read more

And when I asked about the price, he merely mentioned something without even stopping what he was doing to acknowledge I was actually in his store (and the only one I might add). He didn't care so I took my business to K Le Time (see Yelp) in Vacaville -- they're a watch repair that charged me $5 for the watch band replacement and took less than 15min to complete. Seriously. this is why Davis Downtown businesses aren't as robust and sustainable as other businesses -- because they're pricing themselves out of the market. I would love to support small and local businesses, but not at 50% over comparable costs elsewhere... Or in the case of 3rd St Jeweler, they were 500% more expensive. read more

I have been really disappointed with the work the owner of 3rd Street Jewelers did for me a year ago. I had a ring that was a family heirloom, and a beautiful amethyst ring a friend gifted to me. These rings looked really nice together, and fit perfectly next to one another so I decided to have them permanently fused together and hired 3rd Street Jewelers. I was really happy with the original setting of the amethyst ring and really didn't want to change it but the owner told me I had to build up the prongs while he was fusing them together for stability. In hindsight, I wish I would have asked more questions because he ruined the ring and not only did it not make the ring stronger, it created weakness of the prong structure. Not one day went by without the prongs getting caught on my bathroom towels or specific clothing. Literally, all of my body towels and hand towels have snags with long strands of hanging thread. All my good towels are ruined now along with my ring! I was always polite but didn't understand why the problem could not be resolved. I took the ring to him three separate times over a three-month timeframe but he kept telling me that the prongs needed to "wear down" and then they wouldn't catch any longer. I've been wearing very high-end jewelry my whole life and I had never heard that before. I felt like he thought I just came out from under a rock and that I didn't know the first thing about gold or rings. The problem was never resolved and he became more and more hostile towards me so I hesitated going back. One year after he fused my two rings the prongs finally gave way and the whole set snagged breaking one prong entirely which released and popped out my amethyst. The stone was lost for a couple of days but luckily I found it and took the whole set back to 3rd Street Jewelers and told him what had happened, and that the ring got caught on a towel (again) that finally broke the prongs and ruined the ring. He told me that I must be "very hard on rings because I'm active". In the last year, I've been recuperating from two oral surgeries and a major shoulder operation. I have not had the ability to be "that active or hard on rings". He refused to make the original wrong right without a major charge. He told me that he "went above and beyond" what any jeweler would have done to fix the ring to which I say bs to because the problem was his from day one with the faulty prongs being set incorrectly. I was told by two reputable jewelers that because the ring was "fixed" better known as heated up to meld the prongs, the gold became very brittle and is now not usable. I will have to have the entire ring made from scratch. I will never use 3rd Street Jewelers again and do not recommend them for any service or custom work whatsoever! read more

Frank the owner is a very nice guy. Friendly, helpful and great at what he does. The store is small with a bit antiquated taste. It looks like there are a lot of consignment pieces there. He has some really nice custom pieces and tries hard to work with every budget. His new pieces are great and of good quality and value. I'm very happy with a ring my husband bought me there about 4 years ago now. On the down side, I had some work done on my wedding set recently. The head of the stone was lowered, it was soldered to my band and the whole white gold set was re-flashed. Everything was GREAT except that my center pear was re-mounted crooked. Not just a little crooked either. VERY crooked. My husband picked it up for me, thought something was off, but wasn't sure. when I brought it back in I was very much treated like I was being picky. It was crooked! Frank made good on it and fixed it, but it took longer than he originally said it would to do so. When I picked it up again he asked me "does this meet your standard?" Like I was being fussy because it was done wrong the first time. I like Frank, but with no apology and the attitude that I was just being picky, that's enough to lose my future business. I went in at 5:30 on a Thursday needing a watch battery replaced ASAP (why do they die at the worst times?) they close at 6 and I was told there were 3watches in line in front of me so they can call me tomorrow morning. When I mentioned my situation in passing, offering a hearty tip for expediency, the owner sat to his work without another comment and had it done in under 10min for me. De luna told me that it would cost me $12 and take a few days, so I went around to see if there were any better options. I wandered around Davis until I found 3rd street Jeweler. I told them that the band broke and they said they'd take a look at it. I spent a few minutes browsing the store until they handed it back to me and told me to have a great day. They fixed my watch in a few minutes and didn't charge me a thing! I was really pleased and blown away by how nice these people are! I got my new watch sized today! The folks at 3rd Street Jeweler are very friendly and expedient with their services. The repair guy had my watch ready in less than 5 minutes--that's great! The cost of watch sizing begins at $15. It cost me exactly $15 to have 4 links taken out. I think that's worth it, considering how quickly and meticulously my watch was adjusted. I had a horrible experience. I went in to have a bracelet repaired. I commented to the owner that I thought the repair was expensive for the amount of work that was done. He said that he didn't like people questioning his prices, and told me that I didn't have to come back if I didn't like it. I will not be going back. I would rather go to Sacramento or Woodland. What kind of owner doesn't acknowledge his customer's feelings? He could have said that is how much it costs, and discussed it with me. I don't like business owners who are rude. They have a professional jeweler on site to work on metals, rings, necklaces, watches, etc. He comes in pretty often and does quality work from what I can tell. Every Christmas, Frank runs a gift service for underprivileged families where store patrons can bring gifts in and Frank will have the gifts wrapped and sent to the right families on a list that he has. Any children that haven't been chosen by the time of the deadline, he buys the gifts himself. That's the kind of guy he is. If a friendly demeanor and a non-pushy attitude are what you are looking for in a jeweler, give them a shot. Larger stores will have more selection, but with the level of service i have received here, i have no reason to go anywhere else. read more

I had a horrible experience at this store. Do not shop here! If only I would have read Yelp first. I took a ring that needed repair in and got it back one day before they promised. When I showed up I asked to look at it with his magnifying glasses as the daughter did not offer any explanation of the work completed. The owner, gave me the glasses and I said. "Wow this looks different! The prongs holding three of the diamonds are different colors of gold and I thought they were all white gold". He said we don't change the settings just add gold to build up the prongs. I asked to see the picture he took when I dropped the ring off, to compare. He got very defensive. I said, 'I am not accusing you of anything, I just want to see". He said that I was accusing him of taking my diamonds. I said, "Well maybe the ring was so dirty, I didn't notice the different colors of gold used in the setting". He was very aggressive and rude. He said not to bring any of my jewelry back there again. I said "Don't worry, I won't I don't have any more jewelry". I paid $245 to get seven prongs built up. Always have your ring appraised before you take it into an unknown shop. Take detailed pictures of the item. Write out in a diagram what is being repaired. This guy is very aggressive, very rude! read more

I absolutely have to give this place five stars. I just have to. I have been going to 3rd Street Jewelers for several years now (though only once or twice a year) to have my watches repaired or batteries in them replaced. I still remember the first time I tried to get a watch re-sized in Davis. I had gone to another place downtown that was to take out a few links of my expensive designer watch that had been a graduation gift. They re-sized the watch and I wore it around without a care in the world. Later that night, the watch literally FELL right off my wrist! Thankfully, it fell into my lap and was not damaged (some libations may have been involved, but that was unrelated to the watch falling off...but imagine if I hadn't noticed!). I was so angry I didn't even go back to the other place (I did not trust them!). Instead, I went to 3rd street and asked if they could help me. The jeweler there (one of the two main guys) immediately could tell what the other repair place had done incorrectly and he proceeded to fix it. Then, HE DIDN'T CHARGE ME! Woh what?? He instead asked for a kind word on daviswiki.org, which I more than happily obliged. It was in that moment I knew I wouldn't go anywhere else for my watch and jewelry-related needs. Since that pivotal moment, I have gone to them for every watch-related issue I have had (I happen to love watches and have many, so this need comes up more often than not). I just cannot get over how friendly they are, how quickly they can replace a watch battery (some places in the past told me to leave it overnight- really??). and how knowledgeable they are. Also, I don't want to leave out that they do have really beautiful jewelry selection despite the decor of the place looking a little....New Jersey 80's. It's almost endearing at that point. They also have some really elaborate clocks and art for sale! Seriously, if you are in Davis or willing to drive from surrounding areas, you must go here. I brought my broken bracelet to get it fixed and after I picked it up, it fell apart immediately on the same day in the same place. I brought it back in and asked if it could be fixed again as obviously it wasn't fixed in the first place. I was told that they would have to charge me again and I asked if it could be fixed for free since I already paid for a repair that wasn't done. In response, I was yelled at and told they don't want to do business with me... this is the worst customer service that I have experienced in my entire life. The owner was extremely rude to me and kept raising his voice. I thought that when you go to an overpriced place, the least you can get is an excellent customer service. Not a case here. The man who works there is nice, but he charged way too much for work that was frankly quite shoddy. It was a simple repair (adding charms to a bracelet) that required 3 jump rings be soldered. The welds were badly done and what's worse, I had to pay $15 -- PER WELD!! $45 dollars to add 3 $7 charms to a $20 chain. Wow. What's more, despite my explicit instructions, he managed to get the charms on the wrong links of the bracelet. The reason I give 3 stars is because he re-did it all for free when I told him the charms were in the wrong place. He's a very nice guy and very friendly. Watch out their price! Frank tried to charge me more than $250 or much more to change the size of a silver jewelry, but other jeweler in the same town only charge me $35 to make thing well done. I really didn't want to give a bad review... The 1st time I was here I brought a watch to have some links taken off. Cost $15 and was quick. I was in and out and I was happy. The 2nd time I came in, I brought a different watch to have some links taken out. This watch was a Sandalwood watch so I understood there was at least some risk of chipping. There were some chipping but that's ok, I knew the risks. The problem I had was how he treated another customer. A lady walked in at this point and asked how much it would cost to have her earrings soldered. He told her the price and she was a bit surprised that it was more than she thought. I'll admit she was being dramatic however, he responded in a rude tone, "Hey, ma'am its 14k gold! That's how much it costs. If you don't like it then don't bring it here and take it back to where you bought it!" Well, after he finished with my watch I thanked him, paid and left. When I got to my car I noticed he actually missed a hole in one of the links when he put the peg back in which also broke one of the clasp links, making it jut out. I thought, "well we are all human and make mistakes and although that base link can't really be replaced, I'll still forgive him if he owns up to it." I brought it back and said he missed a link, he takes a look at it and says, "oh you're right!" I also mentioned that it broke the clasp's link and this is where it gets suspicious. There was no way anyone can not see a chunk of the wood sticking out from the clasps, but he starts saying, "oh its just a chip see?" and he shows me one of the chips on the inside of the band. I try to specify telling him its on the outside and he looks again and says no its just a chip and he keeps showing me different parts of the inside band. I told him, "here I can show you" and I try to take it back to show him and he pulls it back real quick and insists that there's only chips WHILE HIS THUMB was covering the part on the outside where its broken. After a few more times of me awkwardly trying to ask him to hand it over so I can properly show him, he finally gives up and I show him. He finally says that he can glue it but that's it. I get it back a few days later. It no longer works...and the glass on the front is cracked...it was a brand new watch too... read more

TERRIBLE SERVICE AND WILL BREAK YOUR STUFF!! I came in to get a battery replaced and mind you, my watch kept excellent time before I stepped into the store; the light was simply getting dim. He said my battery was low and replaced it. I left, looked down 20 minutes later and saw it wasn't working. I came back, said "Hi, I was just here, but my watch doesn't work anymore." Immediately I could tell he was upset. This watch means a lot to me, I just wanted it fixed, I wasn't even being rude. As he was walking over to the watch repair area, he started asking me what was wrong with it and I said again, it just doesn't work, not even the light will turn on. Frank accused me of bringing in a defective watch, and I said no, it was fine, it just needed a battery replaced, it kept great time. He removed his battery and was going to close it up and I asked for my old battery back. As he was putting my old battery back, he dropped something from my watch on to the floor, then hastily put it back together and replaced my old battery. He handed back my watch with my "old battery" (he literally just grabbed one from a box he had) and handed it back to me (yeah, it was still broken). Then as he was walking over to refund my money, he said not to bring my watches back there. He took back my credit card to refund the money and he said "...Fucking accusing me of breaking your stupid watch." I didn't even say anything to that, even though I had every right to. Who curses at a customer who wasn't even being rude to them? I know Valentines Day is coming up, so please avoid this place. They'll just rip you off. read more
