I'm not sure that these folks actually want to adopt out their rescue pups. Was approved and got…read morean email stating I was approved. Second email said wait 5-7 days and respond with dogs you're interested in, which I did. Never heard back. Ended up going to a local rescue and adopted a senior companion with special needs to add to the family. Our last rescue we had for over 11 years and we kept in touch with not only his rescue (yearly with donations and events), but with the actual person who rescued him. We are sorry ARF turned out to be such a disappointment with no communication after application approval. But nonetheless, it worked out for us and the rescue we rescued from. I was warned in the therapy dog community not to attempt to adopt from them and they were correct. Hate to leave a bad review since it's all volunteers, but simple communication goes a long way when there are a lot of pups waiting for forever homes out there.

For those of you who know me, know that I love my pooch Ryno. He's a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, and yes, is treated like royalty. I have yet to meet a Cavalier that hasn't been sweet, awesome, and overall just a great catch! I have not adopted from this rescue, but know people who have, I've also met a few people affiliated with the rescue at various meet ups and dog shows throughout IL and even WI. :-) You couldn't ask for a bunch of better people! Here's a little about their mission (taken from their website): GCCR's mission is to help ensure the health and security of abused, abandoned, and otherwise endangered Cavalier King Charles Spaniels by rehabilitating and placing Cavaliers from shelters and similar situations, by assisting breeders and owners in finding new homes for their Cavaliers, and by providing to the public educational materials and consultation regarding Cavalier health and care. The growing popularity of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels has prompted increased breeding by unscrupulous breeders and puppy mills. This development suggests that owners' concerns about health as well as the number of Cavaliers in need will only grow. I have a very special little dog who…read moreneeds a lot of training and attention to help overcome her behavioral challenges and they not only understood what to do immediately, we've been making steady progress since we first met everyone. The convenient Wheaton location of the facility is great for daycare and they also allow for half-day daycare too. Very flexible scheduling. When I pick my dog up, I can tell that she's received personalized attention from the staff and that she has been well cared for. Often she's been able to work one-on-one with a staff member for nearly all of her half-day session. We also attend the group classes which are incredibly unique and let my dog build up practice interacting with other dogs in a way that reinforce new, good behaviors. My neighbors are thrilled with the progress almost as much as I am - my dog no longer automatically barks at everyone outside now and is able to make new friends. The in home training we did originally was incredibly valuable to get us started on the right foot. We need to do that again very soon! Is it the least expensive daycare and/or training in the area? No. But it is ABSOLUTELY worth it. When I leave my dog in the care of The Canine's Voice I know that she's going to be safe, loved, and will learn a few things while she's there. The classes are incredibly valuable too. The results speak for themselves.

Even though the cats spend their days in small cages, there is a revolving cast of volunteers who come into the store daily and make sure the cats get exercised. They also "foster out' cats so that they become socialized and used to living in a home.

We have adopted three cats from this facility. I was also one of the volunteers for a while before…read moregoing back to school, so I have had first-hand experience of how the operation is run. Although it is a small shelter, they're very meticulous and take really good care of the cats. Each feline is "vetted", receives their shots, and is spayed or neutered before being adopted, so all of the medical necessities are included in the adoption "fee" (which makes it quite the bargain). All cats are screened for parasites and other ailments such as FIV and FIP (which is something that many pet stores do not do... a very sad lesson that a friend of mine learned the hard way) and are monitored for a period of time before being made available for adoption. There is a small army of dedicated foster parents and volunteers that care for the cats, making sure they are healthy and their personalities are suitable for being adopted, before they are moved into the "cattery" for viewing and, hopefully, adoption. The cages and litter boxes are cleaned and disinfected several times a week, and the cats are offered lots of time out to play and interact. There is such a sense of security when looking to adopt an animal from C.A.R. because you never have to worry about illness beyond a little winter cold (yep, cats get colds, too!) This is also a no-kill shelter. And unlike some places, you will never find the "it's just a cat" attitude here. The adoption process might seem a bit off-putting for those who are used to pet stores who will sell any animal to literally anyone without question, but C.A.R.'s goal is to make sure that everyone involved... both your family and the cat... will be happy. After all, adopting an animal is a commitment, and fates willing, you will have your pet for many, many years! They're very good about making sure that the cat's personality (shy, dominant, skittish, friendly, etc.) is right for your family and your home (single- or multi-cat home, families with or without children, families with or without dogs, etc.) The comfort, health, and safety of the cat is paramount. As I mentioned, we've adopted three cats from C.A.R. All three have been amazing... 100% litter-trained, healthy as horses, and absolute angels, with completely different personalities! Our lives are so much more complete with our little furbabies, and we really can't thank C.A.R. enough for taking such good care of them while they waited to come home.

The stuff I used to get here for my animals they don't even carry anymore. The employees are not very helpful. They're not enthusiastic about their jobs and they seem a little sedated like they're out of it. The vibe of the store is mundane. but I guess when the employees don't want to be there, it makes the customers not want to be there either.
