We adopted a dane/lab mix from Almost Home last year. I really appreciated the foster-to-adopt system they have to give you a clearer idea of what the specific animal is all about. I've had dogs my whole life and when I filled out their paperwork I was of the opinion the only reason I might return a dog would be aggression or if my personal financial situation changed dramatically. The fostering system gave me a much better idea of what I was committing to in this case. My wife, kiddo, and I all came to meet the dog we thought we wanted and after that went well we took her home. It became immediately clear that this girl had not been indoors or socialized very much, if ever. I was very surprised to have essentially a 70lb puppy on my hands. This was more work than I expected, and it was more work than my family expected, but knowing we had time to work with her as a foster in our home environment provided a lot of confidence in seeing how it went. Almost Home was in regular contact to check in with us and provided us with enrichment toys, advice, and resources for taking her to training classes. There was never pressure to keep her, and it was always clear everybody was only interested in what was best for the animal. After a few weeks she was improving, but still more work than I expected, and Almost Home was happy to let us continue to foster until everybody was sure this would be a good fit. Our girl kept improving and we committed to the adoption. Eventually we were able to return our home to normal, and do so free of concerns things would be destroyed. The time and space that was provided to be sure this would all work out resulted in one of the best bonds I've ever had with a dog. We're inseparable these days, and we owe it to the support Almost Home and their volunteers offered throughout the process. read more

I should have looked at the reviews before falling for a puppy from Almost Home Foundation. We did the meet up at Petsmart and fell in love. Our previous adoptions have been meet and take home. We felt nervous leaving the perfect pup behind. I quickly filled out the application and waited for call to set up home visit. After not hearing back in a week, I refilled the application with more information, I sent a personal email and visited another event to talk to someone. Still no word. Then today my heart broke as I received a message that there is an instagram live event with our puppy listed, along with "he's still here". We could have given this puppy a beautiful life. We adopted our cat Pearl from Almost Home Foundation in March 2025. After we submitted the application, AHF sent emails keeping us updated with the status of the application and what the next steps would be. When it came time to meet Pearl, AHF Sheila met with us at the foster's home. Pearl was extremely shy and anxious so we weren't able to really interact with her. We still wanted to bring her home and give her a chance to have a forever home. Sheila recommended foster to adopt to ensure that Pearl would feel comfortable with us and that she was a good fit for our family as well. We knew that we would do anything to help her feel at ease with us as long as it took. But it was nice to know that if she really did not feel at home, she would go back to the fosters (in a safe environment). During the six-week foster to adopt time, Sheila maintained contact with us checking in with Pearl and to see if we needed anything. At Pearl's official adoption, Sheila had all the adoption documents ready, a goodie bag for Pearl, and a knitted blanket (donated by a volunteer). We could tell that Sheila really cared about Pearl and her wellbeing. She even asked us to send her updates after the adoption as she likes to see their adoptions' progress with the families. We adopted Barney (aka Douglas) 6 months ago and we cannot image our lives without him. AHF is a great organization and Gianna was super helpful. She assisted with all of our questions and concerns and made the adoption process seamless. All known "illnesses" were told to us up front. AHF also worked around my schedule to get Barney neutered. Gianna checks in every now and then which means a lot to us as it shows us that they really do care about the animals. As we prepare to celebrate Ellie's birthday this month, we couldn't be more grateful to have her in our family. About a year ago, after hearing recommendations from friends and colleagues, we chose to visit Almost Home to find a companion for our other dog. We met with Gianna to visit a dog we had seen online. As advised, we brought our dog to the meeting to make sure she'd get along with this new dog. When that meeting didn't go so well, the staff on site that day knew that Ellie (formerly Madonna) would be just perfect for all of us. Ellie wasn't the dog we planned to see; she wasn't even on our list. Ellie turned out to be the best surprise, though! She is the most gentle, loving pup! Gianna and another staff member took the time to introduce Ellie to our dog and really make sure they'd get along. They then allowed us to spend the entire afternoon with the dogs, making sure we were also a good family for sweet Ellie. We wanted to bring Ellie home that night, but upon realizing they were sending her home with tons of new toys, a large crate, and a large bag of food and treats, we just couldn't make it all fit. We chose to bring all her things home and have her new home ready for her arrival. The next day, another volunteer from the shelter went out of her way to drive Ellie 45 minutes to our house! After the official adoption, Ellie settled in perfectly! Gianna kept in touch with us (and still does on occasion) to make sure Ellie is doing well. We can't imagine our lives without this sweet dog! We are so grateful for the kindness and the expertise provided by Almost Home. They knew exactly the dog who we needed in our lives, and they knew exactly the family Ellie needed. How about a follow up question to uncover the fact that she leaves the car running with proper ac/heat, which is disabled from being able to be moved, cuz thats how they make new cars these days, with the proper air/heat settings. i mean she attaches a blink camera to the dash so she can see her! "Im sorry, the dog has been adopted since you submitted your application" or if your hand will cramp from that many words, you could role with "Your application does not qualify" - which is only one word longer than "Not at this time" but 10x more communicative. We had been wanting to add a dog to our family and were going to wait till after our wedding, but when we saw Finley's post come up on Facebook my now husband and I knew we had found the pup for us. AHF travels all over to take in dogs from some terrible living situations and cases of neglect and abuse. Our Finley came from Alabama and although he's a nutso Auss-Border collie mix who prides himself on causing mischief, runs around all day with one of his many rubber chicken toys, still is too wired to calm down to get along with our cats, one look at at his big blue eyes will get him forgiven of just about anything. The people at AHF are the heart and soul of the operation. I've been following them on Facebook, we been thinking about adopting rescuing, a cat friendly dog. I reach out via messenger and worked with Gianna. Navajo was tested and was a favorite at the kennel. He came to us potty and house trained, hardly barks is the most loving, friendly dog I have ever had. We love our dog, but we were new to adopting with AHF. The process wasn't clearly communicated and he came home with undetected parasites. If you are looking to adopt here, please be sure to take your newly adopted pet to your vet for a full veterinary exam. We are a family of 5 with two dogs: A 12.5 YO Great Dane and a 2 YO shepherd mix. A volunteer posted about Moose, a 1 YO intact Great Dane, on Facebook. There was trouble with the online application, it wasn't saving our information. I reached out to the volunteer that posted about him, she said that they did not receive our application, but to text the Foster Care Coordinator for Moose. She asked all the good questions. At that time, I was told he had Kennel Cough and needed to be on antibiotics before we could schedule the meet and greet. I understand that everyone at AHF are (possibly overworked/overwhelmed) volunteers, but we had to follow up for responses, text communication was unclear at times and it was a struggle to get the meet and greets scheduled. (Side note: we learned he was a stray and when we met him we noticed he was underweight and his stool was not solid. We were told that it was likely stress and the change of food.) Our family agreed that we were interested but needed time to get the house ready and all the supplies. He was going to be at an adoption show that Saturday. We went to see him again. I met the most lovely and helpful volunteers there. They answered SO many questions I had about the process (I had not heard that you need to foster first, then adopt - and the adoption was done at the adoption event only on Saturdays). Here I was told that in the foster process, I would receive everything I needed: food, collar, elevated food dishes, a crate and I would to give all of that back when we adopted. After meeting him Saturday, we were sold on Moose. I needed to puppy-proof my house, so I texted the foster care coordinator to ask if we could do the home visit/dog drop off on Tuesday. I was told they "couldn't hold him until then." There were more challenges with scheduling the at home visit. I asked if we would be given all the supplies and we were given only his food. I was told that they didn't have the other supplies in a size appropriate for him. The home visit went great and after 2 days, we were in love and confirmed that we wanted to adopt. I was extremely thankful that we were able to confirm a appointment for him to be neutered the next Monday. The neuter went great and I brought him to the adoption event that Saturday to sign all the paperwork. We did our best to ensure that Moose was not too active after the neuter, but that's hard to do sometimes. We noticed his scrotum was filling with fluid and were concerned, so I scheduled an appointment with my vet. They wanted to also do a full exam on him including a fecal sample. We brought him in and the exam overall went well. They estimated his age to be +/- 3 years. I got a call from the vet the next day. "Do you want the bad news or the bad news?" Turns out that Moose came with Giardia and whipworms. Both of which are contagious so all 3 dogs needed to be treated with Panacur, which was over $500 (and that was with the vet working with us on cost). Hearing that these were contagious, I reached out to the AHF volunteer to let her know dogs in the shelter may be at risk. I was not looking to be reimbursed, but I wanted clarity on how this happened. Did I wrongly assume they did a full veterinary exam and checked his stool and was given a clean bill of health since nothing was disclosed? I was told that he received the standard required preventatives and if I had reached out to them first, they could have helped me with the cost. But I didn't know that that was an option. They also said he did not exhibit any symptoms and suggested that perhaps he got the parasites in our care. (Follow up to that side note: Weight loss and diarrhea are symptoms.) I was requested to write a review on my experience, so here it is. I do appreciate all the helpful volunteers I worked with at AHF. read more

My experience with these people have been horrible. Most of the workers have bad attitudes. They also appear racist. They are nasty right in your face. Police was even called on me after I gave my sick sisters dog to them and paying 400.00 dollars in shots and grooming. I just recently attended their Bark a lot out door fund raiser. I donated dog food and a very nice harness. As I was looking through a box of dog clothes a man comes over to me and say "free" I said to him what, he again said "free";suddenly some woman yell out "one dollar, there is now a price put on the dog clothes" in front of me.This was so disrespectful, so nasty. They don't allow you to adopt a dog under age 2 if you work at all, even part time. The don't acknowledge your application and never let you know they ever received it. Don't even consider adopting from this place if you have to work what so ever. Plus the president of this organization, Rosemary McNiff is rude. read more

I have adopted, and fostered with multiple rescues: To put this in perspective, this is all done with a volunteer work force. The animals come from kill shelters, most strays or abandoned, even from out of state. They have been neglected, mistreated, abused and given up on. SO to the complainers who feel they have not been given a fair shake, please keep in mind it is not about you personally, w/all that AHF invests into these animals, their focus is to get the dog/cat into the right home. Foster parents have a unique perspective in regards to the personality of the dog, its fears, its aggressions, and what kind of environment may ultimately be the best fit for long term success. The dogs have been through enough trauma and drama, AHF wants to get it right. No one is judging you in a negative light, what they are doing is reviewing what is best for the animal. A large high energy dog, may be a better fit with a family with a large fenced yard and other pets. Another dog may fit right into a good life with a single in a condo. Each animal has different needs, that you may or may not be able to fill just because you are drawn to their profile. Again, volunteers, humans, most with jobs, maybe not all w/great people skills, many with a lot of pet experience just trying to do the right thing for every animal. I have found the dogs here are all healthy, reasonably adjusted and fully vetted. You will not find such diligence with all rescue organizations.They are supportive and concerned that the adoption works out for you as well as the animal. Dogs are a lifetime commitment, I am grateful that AHF treats it as such. read more

We were trying to adopt from Almost Home. We are retired and willing to give a dog a wonderful home. We have adopted 2 other dogs prior with different organizations. Without even meeting us, we were told we would need a "younger co-signer" before we could adopt a dog. I should have read yelp previously to see that that do discriminate, but this was a first for me. I told them that we have provisions in our will to provide for a pet if something happened to us, but they were stuck on the younger co-signer. We are 72 years old, so I guess in their opinion it's too old to adopt and give a loving home to a dog. The dog we had in mind is the final loser in this story. I came across Almost Home while I was looking for a dog. I was impressed by how detailed the process was for adopting, as it showed me they truly want to make sure the dog is going to a home that understands just how much time, energy, and responsibility a dog is! There were a couple puppies from a litter that I was looking at so I filled out the application, and heard back from Samantha their foster mom that day. We were able to set up a time for me to come and meet the puppies the next day. To say it was love at first sight is an understatement. The minute I had Kedzie (Werner) in my lap, I knew she was the one for me. It was so nice to not only meet Samantha, but to see Kedzie with some of her siblings and where she was fostered. We came back two days later to pick her up. You could tell that Samantha loved each of the dogs she had, and that they had been well taken care of while they were fostered. I had let Samantha know we were looking for a more mellow puppy (if that is possible) as I wanted to train her to be a therapy dog and she was spot on in recommending Kedzie. I feel SO lucky to have had such an easy going puppy who came potty trained, never chewed anything (but toys), and is so sweet in her disposition. It is also really nice to be able to keep in touch with her, especially in the beginning when I had some questions that she was able to easily answer for me. And we still are in touch today! I am so grateful for the good care she gave Kedzie while being fostered! I also appreciated that Almost Home was able to give us a history on Kedzie and her story before coming to foster care. I was able to find the shelter her mom had been at and to see pictures of her mom, as well as Kedzie when she was first born. While that is unique to our story, it is nice that they provide as much information as they can, when they have it. In terms of vaccinations and being spayed it was easy to schedule with Almost Home. The vet I worked with through them was fantastic, and if it was a little closer to where I live, I would definitely have them as my vet! Almost Home is a wonderful organization that cares for the animals they foster. It is important to me that they really do screen applicants and try to fit animals whose personalities they know well, with forever families that will best take care of them. This is how animals stay with their families versus being re-homed. I feel very grateful for this wonderful experience of adopting my first dog! I have been a foster mommy with almost home for years. Recently, I fostered a black lab mix who had a very large benign tumor on his side. We decided he needed to have it removed for quality of life reasons. Almost Home rescued him from a kill shelter in Indiana knowing he had a health issue. We also found out when he got here that he had two cysts on his head, a yeasty ear infection and tape worm when we got here. Almost home did a great job getting him the care he needed while I fostered him. Fast forward two months and I am officially a foster failure with a new fur baby. Thank you almost home for bringing Baloo to Illinois and nursing him back to health. He is the best (8 year old) puppy ever!!! read more

Why I love them: 1. They saved my baby and 19 other dogs from an evil man who posted on Craig's List that he was going to shoot all of them unless somebody picked them up. I feel that this place is trying to do a good thing, but I think they are understaffed on the "communication" level -- and volunteers are not educated enough about the dogs they "show" at the PetSmart events. All of the above said, here is my best advice if you are adopting a dog (not puppy or cat) from AHF: Do your own research to make sure the breed of dog you are interested in, is "likely" good with other animals you may already have at home. The same goes for what they say about the dogs getting along with other dogs you may already have. Do not take their word for it. For example, coonhounds would likely not get along with your cats - rather they would probably hunt them. They also might not like the dog you already have and it might attempt to attack it on a regular basis. They may also appear to get along with the cats or other pets for a little bit before you realize that they want to eat them. The 10 day "pending" period is not always going to bring this behavior out in these animals. And this is not something every person - especially when you are getting your first dog - would be alert to. Likewise, if you have to return a dog per the contract's terms -- after you've spent nearly $2000 and two years trying to get it trained to just follow basic commands, and to help deter it's aggressiveness (aggressiveness meaning: when it starts ripping your house to shreds, snaps at you and your children when you try to discipline it as instructed by the reputable trainer you spent $2000 at, and also having to keep your cats locked in your bedroom so they aren't hunted and killed by said coonhound ) do not be surprised when they try to still pin it on your family for not trying hard enough to fix the situation. It was hard enough on our whole family to have to return him. It sucked to be told by the man in the filtered reviews that it was probably our fault after we had invested so much time and training and love in the dog. Well -- short of completely getting rid of three cats and my children, and taking out a large loan to send the dog away to some more serious training -- there wasn't much more we could do. Luckily it appears that they found a new home for him. I hope it's one without kids or other animals and I hope he's doing fine. Just do your research here and you'll be ok. read more
