Not sure what was going on, my car wasn't running most of the time, but the technician had a flashlight and was inspecting things under the hood. They state they are a test only station, but they have 3 other ports that appear to have vehicles they are working on, with a single test station. Brought it back, a different guy is there. He was rude and dismissive. He did the test, and even though it only took 5 minutes, he wanted "full price" for the retest. I went there for a SMOG check and asked for a certificate when it's done on site, they gave a piece of paper and told me that's the certificate, and that they will pass my record to NeedTag so that my license can be renewed. 3 days passed, no records were sent; I contacted NeedTag and provided them the certificate I was given by the store, and it's not the correct certificate. They need to change their name to 4 Less Customer Service. I've had pretty good experience with 4 Less Smog Check in San Mateo in the past. Today was the worst experience I've ever had with any business. I had called them prior to see if they were open and how much a smog test would cost. He quoted me $40 including certificate. I went there, he did the smog test which my vehicle passed. I was about to hand him my payment and I confirmed with him, "$40, right?" He said no, $98. My jaw dropped. I explained to him that I was quoted $40 over the phone. He said that I should have told him that I was the one who called earlier. I told him that I called and asked what the cost was and I thought that's what they charge everyone. Then he said I was just making excuses. He said he would go ahead and charge me the $40, like he was doing me a favor. Also, the entire time he wasn't wearing a mask. I asked him why he wasn't wearing a mask. So he showed me his mask which as on his computer and not on his face. I asked why he wasn't wearing it and shouldn't he be wearing it when he with customers. He responded by saying that I'm only bringing this up because I had an issue with the price of the smog check. I said "No, I'm asking because it's not safe for him or his customers. Been going here for few years now. This year I found out while renewing my registration that a smog cert was due, looked up on yelp for anyone open on a Sunday! And they were open and speaking with Ben who appeared to be the only one that working and was busy with few cars ahead of me on a late Sunday afternoon. He was quick, friendly and mentioned they are not really open on sundays but due to covid open pretty much 7 days.
