    Margherita Verace

We came here at about 1:45 on Wednesday and were quickly served. It was during the lunch time menu but we opt to do the regular menu pizzas (14" vs 9"). The Margherita pizza has the distinction of being the worlds best pizza in 2014 so we had to try it. It was good. The dough was soft and the texture was between chewy and crispy. I'm not sure about the criteria to be the worlds best pizza but maybe I think there may be better pizza out there. The prosciutto pizza was also good. The meat went wel with the greens and again the dough was soft and the pizza was easily foldable. The service was great and our waitress was all smiles.

So, the claim is that this is the home for the best pizza in the world. And yes, of course I wanted to check this out when I was in Melbs. In fact, I joined an amazing foodie group wanted to put this pizza to the taste test. We had to go with the world famous Margarita. But, we also wanted to try other style to get a good idea of what this pizza joint was all about. We settled with the Caserta. Now, I must note. This place seems to be very popular. It was very busy! So, maybe book a table ahead of arriving. The service was ok and reasonably fast considering how busy they were. Now down to what you all want to hear. How was this world best pizza? Well... it was pretty good. True Neapolitan style pizza with a thin middle and thicker border with little ingredients. So the crust is nice and chewy, but the middle is thin and full of toppings. The sauce was great, lovely flavour and brought the pizza ingredients into a happy marriage. My only strife with this pizza is that the inner part of the pizza is just a little too thin. Also, maybe the sauce could have been spread out just a little further to stop the "bowl" effect. Where all the ingredients cook and slide into the middle to produce a bowl of cheesy toppings. It also makes the middle of the pizza soggy. But, the flavour is all there! I know that there are some strict guidelines when it comes to making Neapolitan style pizza. Almost to the point of exact measurements of crust and thickness. The type of flour is also strict "00". In saying that, I think that this style of pizza is like the hardest to get right. They almost have it. But, not quite yet.

Lygon Street, Brunswick East is a cool part of town. Seriously, it is and I'm not saying that because it's my neck of the woods and I love it but it really is. There's plenty going on here - cool bars, nice restaurants, cafes and bakeries. So, it's no surprise that it's home to 400 Gradi. I drive past this joint everyday and it's packed to the rafters every night. It's that popular that I've had people at work and at the gym asking me if I've eaten there. Well, we finally did it a few weeks ago and it was a great experience. I'm pretty sure almost all the staff there are from Italy, judging by their accent and this adds to the authenticity of the whole experience. They are a good looking bunch as well. My cousin was drooling over the waiters and the waitresses... Yep, not bad, not bad at all! We ordered 4 pizzas to share and they were all delicious - thin and light base, fresh ingredients and lots of flavour. The residents of Napoli would be proud! The decor is vibrant and modern whilst also having a bit of a homely atmosphere. The staff are really nice too and they kept checking on us to make sure we were happy with everything without overdoing it. The Frutti Di Mare is a fan favourite but I personally really liked the Toscana. It's always busy so make sure you call at least a week ahead to book a table.

I'll come straight out and say it - best pizza in all of Brunswick. I don't normally like choosing 'best ofs' because things aren't usually so cut and dry, but in this case, it's easy peasy. This is the best pizza around, and the only let down for me is that they don't deliver. I like a thin pizza base and they make them perfectly thin at 400. The tomato sauce is so fresh and tomatoey with a delicate balance of herbs. You can taste the quality in the toppings and they're layered on with a light hand, someone who really understands how to build a flavoursome yet delicate pizza. I've also tried a pasta here that I can't speak quite as highly of. It was perfectly good, but the star of the show is clearly the pizzas. I don't reckon I'll ever order anything else here, and I don't think I'll be ordering pizza anywhere else but here.

    Margherita with rocket

Is this the best pizza I've ever had? No. Is it really damn good pizza? Yes. This is a very popular spot with indoor and outdoor seating. We arrived at 7:15pm on a Thursday night without a reservation, and in less than 50 minutes we were seated, ordered, and had pizza on the table. This is impressive considering the place was full, with several large parties of 8 or more. The staff is friendly & helpful, though a little on the pushy side... everything felt like it came with an up-sell (though it was easy enough to decline). We ordered the Diavola pizza (like a margharita but with spicy sausage and rocket) and then a Margherita, which is their award-winning recipe. I requested rocket be added to it, and they were happy to do it and didn't charge us - classy! The table next to us ordered pasta which smelled so heavenly I almost had regret... until the pizza showed up. Though I felt like half the pizza was ever so slightly overcooked (I like my crust white & beige, not brown), the flavour was fantastic. Everything from the tomato sauce to the cheese to the dough was fresh and flavorful. The interior was lovely and they have a great wine selection and a full bar. Pay at the front once you get the bill. If you love pizza, this is definitely worth a visit. Just plan for a little wait or book ahead.

Three pizzas was more than enough to share between four people.

That's it. 400grandi has ruined all other pizza for me. I spent all day dreaming of the perfect crust. I had already ordered and reordered in my head during the day in anticipation of this 'world class pizza'. Well I am so pleased to confirm that this truly was the best pizza I have ever eaten. One hot salami, one prosciutto, one pumpkin and cheese and one mighty food comma later and I am one satisfied little gal. The staff were attentive, even in a crowded restaurant they made is feel like the only ones in the room- coming back and checking to ensure out 400grandi experience was flawless. You are looking to spend around $20 a pizza + drinks which is a small price to pay for that total feeling of excitement and contentment you will get when you look down at your plate, lock eyes with your friend..and dig in. Bravo 400grandi. I'll be seeing you every week for the rest of my life if I could.

    The award winning Margherita

Was driving to get an early Japanese dinner and happened to park across the road from here so had a quick change of mind and pizza it was. And so glad we did it! I knew the award winner was the margherita, but we felt like something a little more substantial so got the Frutti Di mare (seafood) pizza and beef carpaccio instead. The beef was beautiful, and so was the pizza, so halfway through we ordered the margherita as well (not because we were hungry, purely out of wanting to taste it after everything else being so delish), and even more "so glad we did its" came from our mouths. From the thin, yet still soft base, to the tomato and buffalo mozzarella.... Can see why it won best pizza IN THE WORLD! I'm drooling thinking about it now... May have to grab one for lunch today! Fun Fact - there's also a location @ Crown, and soon to be Essendon (yay for closer to home & work!)

Been here on 2 separate occasions The first for a dinner and the second to grab a takeaway gelato My first impression of this restaurant is fabulous service. Everyone was friendly and professional and slick. The bar next door has a lovely vibe and the outdoor seating is just inviting and wonderful. The pizza were delicious but expensive! I haven't been back for dinner as I am slightly apprehensive about spending that much. This is probably the main reason that I won't be back here very often, Pizza is generally not an expensive meal in Italy so why does it cost so much here? Then again, this place is always always busy and clearly there are lots of diners who are happy to pay the price. The vibe of this place can easily be a cool relaxed weekend and weekday dinner. But on a higher end of the budget range and just slightly outside of my relaxed weekday dinner budget.

Been coming here on and off for a year. The pizza is always really good and the service excellent. It's bigger than it looks so we've always been able to get a table without a booking. There's outdoor seating which in part is wonderfully smoke free. At about $25 per pizza it's about average for a fancy pizza place. There is other food than pizza of course.

If you're looking for an award winning, mouth watering, jaw dropping traditional pizza, you have to try 400 Gradi. This little guy is call zingara and is complete with Johnny Di Francesco's famous base, San Marzaro tomatoes, Fior Di late and hot hot salami!! This spectacular combination is absolutely to die for, and i think I've fallen in love!

Here's what we noticed: - It was difficult to get a reservation at prime dinner hour, so we opted for a 3:30 PM late lunch/early dinner which worked out perfectly for our schedule. - The place overall has a great vibe, good music, and it is pretty small. - There were some really interesting drinks and good wines to choose from...we went with wine since we had other plans later that evening. - We decided to start with the salad with pear and honey, and then my wife and I split both the black squid ink pasta, and the special pasta that had Moreton Bay Bugs. The salad was incredible perfectly dressed... Having it first gave us away as Americans for sure, but it was perfect. The squid ink pasta was every bit as good as everyone said in reviews, and so was the special pasta. - Service was great, not overbearing. They even brought us some extra bread so we could sop up the sauce from our pasta. Bottom line: There are so many great restaurants in Melbourne and Tipo 00 is right up there and should be on your "to try list".

The good news is that during this period of closure, the owners go to Sicily to visit family and come back to Bar Idda with new, delicious recipes. Hooray! Not that Bar Idda's home-style Sicilian fare isn't delicious enough as it is. I would recommend every single dish on the menu but that's not terribly helpful. Instead, I'll pick one dish from each course - primi, secondi, contorni and dolce - that I simply cannot not order when I eat here. First things first, pan-fried ricotta gnocchi with mushrooms and greens...I'm starting to salivate. Then, the mulinciani - layered eggplant with tomato, basil and pecorino. Drool-worthy indeed. On the side, so simple yet so refined, the house salad of chicory, celery and sultanas. And the sweet surrender - soaked and spiced figs with vanilla bean gelato. Oh. My. Word. I also recommend doing it Italian-stylee with the drinks by starting off with a refreshing Campari and soda, a vino rosso to accompany the food, and finally, a herbal Averna to wash it all down. It's la dolce vita in a meal. Really.

Nothing was fancy, mind you, but everything was simple and delicious (except for the greens and meatballs). I had about 5 appetizers, 4 main, 3 sides, and a dessert plus ample alcohol, and all were excellent. Linguini with dried tuna was specially amazing - I had ones with dried/salted sardine in Sicilly which was better, but his version is probably as good as u can expect outside of the homeland. It's also one of the two pasta items on the menu, btw - Sicilians less reliant on pasta and tomato sauce, and more on herbs, fish, eggplant, lemon, cinnamon, etc. The main fish was also fantastic. Simply grilled with lemon, caper and olive oil. All the dishes were 8- 15 dollars each, and expect to share on table. Very family type restaurant where u drink inexpensive table wine and enjoy simple but delicious food with friends. Make sure to call in to reserve as tables are filled quickly by local patrons. There are two bar chairs where u can dine quickly. Olive oil- non spicy kind- is amazing. I'm jealous. If I lived here, I'd buy a couple bottles a week to use it at home. Not a place to impress, but a place to cherish. Definitely worth a visit or two or more. U lucky dawgs.
