There were three of them when we first slipped in, pleasantly welcoming in a low key pleasant way. Then, later, there was a fourth that slipped furtively about with a beret I think and what a lovely smile. One fellow had to depart for a break or the shift was over I can't remember which and he said goodbye after hypnotizing me with his skillful clothier ways. We were captive for better part of an hour on a day where plants and maybe a fun t-shirt were the only things on the agenda that couldn't be eaten. Plants in hand and t-shirt plan abandoned headed back to the vehicle on this side of Fillmore because the other side had already been traversed. And near Bush on that half block with old single-story SF historic shop buildings under small trees was 45R. Was it new? I hadn't noticed before or perhaps I wasn't paying attention because no, it had been there for almost a decade. And inside there weren't really the t-shirts I had originally thought I was interested in meeting but there were all these other tops and bottoms and quiet chill super helpful and engaging three then four shop people that wanted me to simply give them my wire transfer information so they could swap out all my savings for really cool clothing. I almost did! Though at the last minute elected to just procure a trousers and a t-shirt that wasn't even remotely what I had been considering but which also was actually perfect so there you go. Simply, you should just pop in. It doesn't matter your mood. If you're blue, your frown will turn upside down. If you're already having a good day, the rest will be better. If you've been cocktailing try really hard to not just volunteer access to all your accounts with an invitation to have at it. All their wares are high-quality, thoughtfully built, for everyday or special occasions, looks that maybe not everybody else is sporting. I popped into this beautiful store yesterday on a day date to the Fillmore with my husband. I found a cool pair of trousers in an interesting cut made of incredible fabric. I was escorted to the dressing room which was the size of a small apartment. The employee (or possibly the owner) brought me several pieces to style the pants with and surprised me with how well everything fit my body (which is a challenge). She had a wonderful eye and explained the story behind many of the items I tried on. I was embarrassed to try on so many nice things without purchasing anything. I can't stop thinking about the drape of all the fabrics and how beautiful everything was. Hope to return and actually invest in one of this store's beautiful items. read more

45r is a magical place. It smells of incense and indigo. A mini trip to Japan every time you enter. Their denim is what they are famous for. Real indigo, amazing quality and workmanship. If you are rich, you can buy some. I'm not rich, so I come for the shirts and bandannas. The staff is helpful and quietly attentive. They will recommend, special order and teach you about the products. Or they will give you peace to shop if you prefer. This is one of the few shops in the US. There are many more in Japan, each unique. Visit if you get a chance! read more

What an amazing place. I love love love Japanese clothes and designers. And I'm so glad that I stumbled into 45R today while on my way to Invision, my fave eye wear shop, which is next door. THIS store makes me love living in SF again. We are so lucky to have it here. The vibe is very cool, the layout and how they display their really unique and gorgeous clothes is beautiful and inviting. They used a lot of wood throughout the store to compliment the organic fibers that the clothes are made from - be sure to check out the cool way the dressing room doors open and close. So much attention to detail from the clothes to the shop. Inside you'll find hand made clothes using very old Japanese techniques of dying and weaving. If you are a fan of Tokyo Fashion Express on NHK World like I am you'll know exactly what i mean. The Japanese honor traditions while breaking the rules with design. Many of the pieces are very tactile, and I wanted to fondle all of them. If you know and love Japanese cotton they way I do this place will be touchy-feely heaven for you! Many items are one of a kind. They have a lot of various shades of indigo. Ryo the manager was a delight even though I could only afford one thing I was treated like gold. His staff were attentive and friendly They offered me either green tea or water - how generous and thoughtful. My sweater was so carefully and artfully wrapped that I don't want to unwrap it. Seriously! I was watching the fellow wrap it and I couldn't figure out how he was doing it. I know that even if I reverse engineer it I'll never be able to copy it! The clothes are expensive BUT like with anything, you get what you pay for and in the case of 45R you'll get so much more in terms of craft and history with a dose of really creative and beautiful. These are pieces to cherish forever. The designer will be in SF to make an appearance soon and i can't wait to meet her. I just bought a pair of Aihiko from them, it is unmatched at least with my experience. Recently I began to dig vintage jeans so I get to experience with different brands, Iron heart, Evisu, Rising sun, RRL, they are all good and different but I would say with Aihiko, the thought put into the cut and color and how they distress the pair is very unique. And yes, this is the first time I buy distressed jeans. I would never trust anyone other than my curvy body to distress my vintage jeans, not until now. I have never visited the store even though I come to Fillmore at least once per month. I was always just following my girlfriend and seats outside to chill. Mission was usually my play ground but I would definitely have more things to do the next time I go to fillmore.I called the store multiple times before I made the purchase, mainly because I was not knowledgable about the brand, the cut and also the website would have 2 items that is hard to tell the difference. The staff are warm, patient and honest. They went through lots of trouble and were doing everything they can to help me. All in all, highly recommended. the price is steep for everybody so I think it really depends on how much this kind of thing matters to you. I got to know 45RPM in NYC, and believe their clothes truly are the best made quality clothes you'll find anywhere. I've since visited their stores in Tokyo, Taipei and Kyoto - all very unique and hospitable. I have t-shirts (best value because they last forever and are so unique), sweaters, jackets, tops, scarves and jeans. The clothes are hand-made in Japan with organic cotton from Zimbabwe, and as you'll notice they don't carry many of the same items to ensure that what you wear is unique so you won't see others wearing the same clothes as you walking around! This is not GAP, nor is it Gucci, but could be as it is secretly adored by insiders in the NY Fashion World. But 45 RPM is very understated (can't easily see their logo) and is a well kept secret.
