Found some really cool, high-quality clothing at very fair prices. They have a lot of brands I had never heard of - it's a well-curated, tasteful collection of very creative brands. I wrote the following about a week ago and have received no response - for privacy, libel, et al., all names have been monickered. I returned to the SF Bay area after being gone for almost 8 years in December 2023. The transition did mot go according to plan because life is often that way. It necessitated me shopping for a variety of clothes. Rolo has had a unique blend of clothes and quality/value for the discerning individual warrants perpetually shopping here as was the case for my friend's son Aaron exclusively. My needs are different for work attire and dinner/evening wear so Rolo didn't share in those categories. About a week ago, I was buying another swimsuit from the 50% off rack and a jock strap. In the middle of checking out, who I learned to be your employee #1, what I consider rudely interrupted the transaction between me and emplyee #3 to insistently question if I would vote for the existing mayor. After repeatedly asking for clarification, I explained I was a recent transplant having been gone for some time. What appears to be not satisfied with my answer, employee @1 went on to tell me there were no other candidate choices. The convo transitioned to the ills of the city being the fault of landlords of which I explained I fir in that category. Gabe, with what I consider false humility, corrected himself clarifying that the commercial property landlords are the issue, not residential. I interjected my close, more than 13 year relationship with the Marsten family, a prominent commercial property owner. (I have the express permission of a family member, Ursula, to use the family name - her response was that it appeared I was in the "right place at the right time."{ The mayoral representative interjected in the conversation that there were good and bad in all aspects of tenant/owner relationships, effectively ending the conversation. I returned days later to make employee #2 aware of a quality issue I had observed in my latest purchase. I followed in to ask who made what I consider a scene in the store. Howie replied that it was just employee #1, answering my follow on inquiry if he was an employee in the affirmative. The conversation also included how the recent show availed exclusive purchasing rights. Based on my 30+ years in and around supply chain, I know vendors provide exclusive purchasing arrangements i limited territories. The ideas above lead me to my present position. With the advent of online shopping and the advancements in motorized transportation, I will vote where I shop with my wallet. Rolo presently is not in the list of choices where I will procure what I want and need. Wow! I was honestly shocked to see ROLO still around! My first pair of really expensive boots came from ROLO... black leather with pirate buckle across. Kinda steampunk before steampunk was suburban mainstream. For we were young and sure to have our way. La la la la... Yup, being young and ridiculously stupid was I. I mean catching the bus & tossing in $1.50 (back then) to buy a $190 pair of boots?! Oh please. Well, actually ROLO is also known for their wicked sales too and so happen it was 75% off which made it after taxes around $50! Not too shabby for something I'd wear maybe twice! ROLO has been around for decades so it's funny when I hear the word "hipster" or "trendy" attached. Hey they've been "metrosexual-ing" since the days of Headlines... remember them? Haha! Yet, quite frankly I am shocked to know ROLO is still around. I think it's the quality denims they offer and those occasional slap yo daddy sales that has kept them from disappearing too. ROLO is locally owned and operated and they have two locations in San Francisco, this location in the Castro and the other in SOMA. I heard there's "R by ROLO" that just opened nearby too. I'm honestly not the biggest fan, but I admit was always a sucker for local business wherever I lived. Rolo is a locally-based San Francisco company with 2 locations in the city that sells quite a few different brands of American and European designers of men's clothing from affordable to pricey. Normally I'd never step foot into a place like this because I know they're ridiculously pricey like those little boutique stores you find in Europe, but this was Thanksgiving Day and not many stores were open. The store was well-organized and clean. They sold pretty much everything from head to toe. I was in the market for a jacket because the one I brought from home was literally falling apart due to lack of use and from sitting in a humid closet back home in Hawaii. Because I live in Hawaii and have no use for a jacket unless were traveling to somewhere cold, I didn't want to spend a fortune on it either. While their selection was broad, what ever caught my eye was a bit pricey, with the affordable ones being something that I'd never wear. So brrr... I didn't purchase anything and instead waited for Black Friday and found something elsewhere. OVERALL: Friendly service, good selection, not for me. read more

I'm giving 5 stars to all Rolo locations, (Not because I worked there many moons ago) but because they are on point when it comes to carrying the best of the best. The staff and owners are great people who are extremely knowledgeable of the lines they sell, along with giving you honest help when it comes to assisting you with what fits and looks right. Rolo is not about just trying to sell you a a shirt to make a sale, so take advantage of the great customer service they deliver! Contrary to some of the other reviews listed below, not everything is at a high price point. They have an assortment of different lines (and locations) that offer low-med. price points. So- If you enjoy clothing that is of excellent quality, EXCLUSIVE, and fits you the way it should, then Rolo is for you. Very good clothing store for men! This is one of the few places that sells G-Star pants. Really nice, friendly and helpful staff. Dominique I believe was the name of the clerk that helped me last time I visited. He was patient and attentive while my partner tried on some 15 pairs of jeans. It can get a little crowded on the weekend but I usually try to hit it early morning on a week day so that I can take my time. If you find yourself in the city and in need of some new threads you owe it to yourself to poke your head in this spot. read more

I have mixed feelings on Rolo. Before I moved to the City four years ago, it definitely was a great place to go shopping for men's clothing before places like The Archive and Barney's came to town. Since then, they have completely decimated half their men's collections to dedicate one wall to alternative apparel and another to g-star. it's rather laughable. Most of their clothing sells for well over $100 and you will definitely find a fine pieces in Acne's collection, yet with most pieces running over $200; BEWARE THEY AND MOST OF THE ITEMS IN THIS STORES ARE MADE IN CHINA!!!! In addition, be very very very very very careful when making a purchase here. their fred perry polos are disgustingly over priced, by $20. even the fred perry anniversary edition polos go for $86, yet their "Fred Perry Twin Tipped Polo" are priced at $95 were other stores (online and retail shops) price them at $75. They recently (about a month or so ago) stocked Raf Simons for Fred Perry polos. Let's see, they were available at the beginning of the year in New York, yet are about six months behind in stocking them here. What you will find on sale for said polos are already half-priced in more fashion-friendly cities. Don't even get me started on their SOMA location, where they will keep a shirt for a couple years before marking it down to $50 to finally get rid of it. And the one guy they have working there? Well, he looks as if he'd rather be cruising the pages of manhunt or dudesnude as he apparently is bored with his job. Lastly, the reason I am guessing this store is going to ruins is because they NEVER PAY THEIR VENDORS!! Five words: chic, edgy, specialized, appropriately priced. Regarding service: I would agree with some reviewers that the service isn't that fantastic for people who don't know what they are looking at. BUT if you do know what you're looking at - how it was made, what makes it special and different, etc. - and if you express it, then you will find what you are looked for. I started talking to the older woman who was helping me, and she knew her stuff about young urban sophisticate fashion. She helped me to brands with similar makes to what I was looking for, made sure that I knew what I was talking about (aka tried to help me understand the process behind the denims, the identity of the brands), and she explored what my taste was, seeing what I was comfortable with. She did a damn good job. Regarding clothes selection and $: This place has SPECIAL clothes that only other high end retail stores carry. I'm not a fashion-slave, but I know about denim brands, washes, fits, and what makes a style unique, and they have one-of-a-kind denim. Beyond denim, THEY HAVE SOME VERY UNIQUE CLOTHING THAT WILL MAKE YOU LOOK AND FEEL GREAT. Most of these clothes are comfortable and fashion forward. If you want to create a look that barely anyone else has, chic and edgy, this place is for you. The clothes here are, yes, for the fashion elite. If you don't know the brands, you will sure as hell think they are "overpriced". But be careful and be wary of others reviewers: THE CLOTHES are NOT OVERPRICED. They are priced for what they are - well made, UNIQUE (mostly imported) garments that are created by innovators of casual and urban sophisticate clothing. Exhibit A: G-STAR RAW and NUDIE JEANS. Nordstrom's now carries G-star, though limited selection, and the g-star store is more expensive than Rolo. Rolo carries a good selection, ranging from narrow to more of a straight leg or comfort fit, from solid washes with a wazy/resin finish to your distressed jeans. If you have a fit that you love, I guarantee you will find it here. If you know the brands they sell, and if the clothes do for you what no other brands can do, you know it's worth the price. If you don't, then of course it's going to be expensive! They have clothes that are being copied by H&M, (i.e. G-star) - but the store doesn't have too much of a say in what designs t are copied by H&M months later. If you go here, most of the designs you will not see in many other brands in the same price range. D&G sure makes some nice garments, but are you going to pay $3000 for a leather jacket? Maybe, if you know it's something else no one will have, and something you feel and look great in. I was in town for Folsom, and took one of my last days roaming Market Street & wasn't sure what I needed. I walked into Rolo at 6:48. I'm a quick shopper and knew they were about to close. I tried on a pair of Helsinki sweats and they were SO COMFORTABLE. I'm typically not one to splurge (as I work in retail and rarely shop without my discount, but I said screw it and treated myself to two new pair. I got home two days later and went to try them on again& the black pair was SIGNIFICANTLY smaller than the other I had tried on in the store. I called and rich answered. Without hesitation, from hearing how I got these tiny pants, he offered to send me a new pair with a HAND WRITTEN thank you card & complimentary (VERY PERFECT FITTED) new black gym T-shirt, and a credit for the shipping charge. I have been shopping at all Rolo's original location on and off again since I was 21 and seeing how the store has evolved over the years has been interesting. I am here to write a review on my experience with the service yesterday which was 03/04/2017. The type of shopper I am is that I like to be greeted the minute I walk in(which I was), I don't like people hovering me thinking I am going steal because it's unattractive and lastly being asked if I am looking for something in particular more than once. This is retail so that kinda can't be helped. I prefer looking at what catches my attention and not be shown something that is a possible comprimable version because that doesn't work for me 99% of the time. I bought some lovely boots and a sweater because it suited my more goth/alternative look. No one came off as arrogant, in my face or anything of the sort so I was pleased with my visit. One of the other owners of the business was there and he introduced himself when I asked if he was owner, he was very personable. read more

Update: Rolo has updated their collection and now carry new designers from Sweden. Bambi has an eye on 2 pea coats but is refusing to pay full price. So I will wait until the sale ...until then I will stick to my bath robe. So if you see me out and about town wearing a bath robe it's because am waiting for the sale and not because I am trying to start a new fashion trend... Rolo was great about 5 years ago when Gill and Robert worked together and the store was about the only place where you could find D-squared, G-star, Energy and other great brands. Now there are so many brand name stores and Department stores carrying the same goods that I don't make the trip to Rolo anymore. They still carry an excellent selection of Jeans. But don't be surprised if you find clothing from 2 seasons ago and not marked down. read more

I love their lip balm, shoe and underwear selection, and t-shirts. Everything else is rather pricey, but for the caliber of their merchandise, it's not too bad. Surprisingly, they have skincare, too..the Kiehls brand is one of my favorites. The staff is very helpful, which is nice, and they'll even let you use their bathroom if you ask nicely and really have to go! And Roberto's biceps, well, those are something to behold! read more

I've been to this store a couple of times and every time I go the staff is generally congenial and pleasant. And every time I go here I always long to see this hot sales associate...I'm sure you know who I'm talking about...heehhehe! Kidding aside their selection of clothing is pretty fabulous. Although I personally prefer the urban feel of the other Rolo store in SOMA. And I have to admit some of the stuff that they have here are pretty matronly as what Michael Kors would say) and very gay (who is going to wear a floral dress shirt of any pastel colored shirt). I am also disappointed with their sizes. I was going to get a pair of dry Nudie's a couple of months ago from this store but unfortunately the smallest they carry is a size 30. When getting raw denims it is always advised to go down 2-3 sizes from the usual size that you wear. But I have to admit they have a pretty cool selection of men's clothing-g-star, j.lindeberg, c.p. company, nice collective, stone island, comme des garcons, belstaff to name a few...For great deals always wait for their seasonal price reduction... outrageously over-priced clothing!!!! a "manpri" (by nice collective) was being eyed with such fondness that he actually bought it for $ 210. he was out of his mind! this place have an interesting, unconventional selections of t-shirts, pants, belts, sweaters, jackets & shoes that are attractive to look!...just to look, for i can't afford to buy anything in a whim at this store. the fitting rooms are small, that has a "pleather" curtain to have your privacy. also they have kiehl's products, g-star, fred perry & etc... such a great store for big spenders! read more

Came in here a few weeks ago looking for skin care products. Being a lady, I was initially a bit confused when Kiehl's directed me to a men's clothing store to find their products, but I ended up having a really great experience. The man working the front desk helped me pick out a couple of products, then recommended some new ones. Since skincare can get pretty pricy, I was hesitant on the new product so he gave me a few days worth of samples to see if I liked it. Of course, I did. I'm impressed by the selection and by the service. I can't speak to their fashion, but I will say- from the products they sell, they certainly have a taste for quality. read more

I once purchased a pair of pants at Saks, on sale at 50% off. I, then, saw them at Rolo 3 months later at full price and that price was higher than Saks' original price. Why?
