I've been an on/off customer for a few years now. By far the best food delivery service in the NYC metro. Very clean, fresh, not frozen, tasty, and reliable. Many options to suit any taste. If weight loss is your goal, I dropped more than 10 stubborn pounds on a reduced calorie paleo diet in about 2.5 months. Other maintainance options available as well. The service is also outstanding. Everything almost always has gone as planned and in the small 1-2 times there has been a minor issue, Monica and her team have been quick to make it right without prodding. As other reviewers have mentioned, I just wish there was an option to ditch the plastic. That's the only reason I went with 4 rather than 5. I had heard about this food delivery service via a personal trainer I had used, as well as the book '5 Square Low-Carb Meals' written by Monica Lynn. I decided to try out a gluten, dairy and refined sugar-free diet (or something reasonably close to that!) and use Monica's book as a guide. I thought maybe a good way to acclimate myself and have a nice treat at the same time, would be to try out their food delivery service for two weeks. First off, you get to see a menu of what types of meals they typically provide, You then tell them of any particular food allergies or aversions you have so they can take that into account. You select whether you want meals delivered 3 days a week, or 5 days a week. Each day you are due to receive meals, it will be delivered to your home (or office if you so choose) the night before....usually anywhere between 9:00-11:00p. Your five dail meals consist of 4 meals that are packaged in plastic takeout type containers, and your 5th 'meal' is a nutritional type bar. All of this is put inside a zippered freezer bag along with a few ice packs. Each meal is labelled # 1-5 so you know the order in which they should be eaten. The next morning I would usually take meals 1-4 and bring them to the office with me. Meal # 5 would be eaten when I returned home from work. I have to say....I really looked forward to receiving my freezer bag with my meals from 5 Squares!!! While there were just a few particular meals that were just 'ok', for the most part they were all downright delicious. I also really liked the idea of 5 small meals throughout the day versus 3 heavier meals. 5 meals per day also helps to break up the monotony of the workday....it seemed no sooner had I finished one meal than I'd look at the clock and think .... '....whoops...time for my next meal! ;-) I feel like 5 Squares really wants to provide you with good quality, tasty, healthy food. It's not just about churning out food and marking up the prices to make a profit. If I had any 'complaints', it would be that 1) all their meals are packaged in either clear thin plastic containers (similar to the type that pre-washed salad greens would come in) or else they come in those high-quality black plastic takeout containers with clear covers. The idea is that these are all one-time use containers and since they can't be recycled in NYC, they must go in the garbage....something that really bothers me. Sure I could wash them and hold onto them for my own food storage needs, but I already have a stock of these...you can only keep so many! I had mentioned this to them....asking if I could just return one set of my four containers back to them washed, inside the freezer bag that had my name on it, and couldn't they just re-use those containers for my next delivery? They said they just didn't have the space or resources for that....not way to sanitize them. And while I understand this would entail an entire process...fear of litigation...they'd have to comply with local food and restaurant guidelines, etc....it seems to me that there should be a way they could manage this if they really wanted to, particularly for long-standing regular customers. My second tiny 'complaint' would be that...for a company that's about healthy living, that they don't automatically use organic and/or free-range etc. components for their meals. I did see in their pricing menu that organic menus are offered and that you can 'call for more information', which leads me to believe 1) they don't normally use organic, free-range, antibiotic-free etc. foods and 2) that if they were to do so, you'd have to pay even more money. Regardless, all in all this is a wonderful service that I'd highly recommend. If I had the money, I'd absolutely use them on an ongoing basis, utilizing their organic menu, 3 days per week. (I wouldn't want to do it more than that as I DO like to cook for myself now and then,or go out to eat with friends....) read more

I can't say enough good things about Monica and 5 Squares. I've had the pleasure of working with them 4 years ago for a 60 Day exercise program, and then again for the past 30 days as part of another exercise program. The meals were always on time and with enough variety to never become boring or repetitive. Very tasty as well. Thankfully there is a cookbook for when want to replicate some of the meals I've had. Portions can also be made adjusted based on needs, habits, etc. There's a full menu available to see what they provide. If you have any preferences, dislikes, or most importantly allergies, you work with them so they can account for that. The meals are in a discreet cooler bag and chilled, so you can reheat as you wish. The cooler bag has also been an excellent conversation starter for other people interested in the convenience of healthy meals. Monica, the president has reached out to me directly in the past just to check in, which is an amazing touch not seen in companies today. 5Squares is the only company I recommend when my friends or colleagues mention food delivery services. read more

Signed up for the 5-day trial. Most of the food is really good and extremely fresh. I love the convenience of the daily deliveries, and I can say that they catered to the few things I asked for them to negate in my meals (ie. chick peas, mushrooms). The protein bar that they give you tastes pretty gross though and sticks to the roof of your mouth - they should nix those. I can appreciate them giving me 5 small meals a day, but it's a bit frustrating that a lot of those meals are salad-based, although good variety. For the price of $50 a day, I'd prefer more hot foods like protein and veggies. Also, they don't give you anything to satisfy your sweet tooth, making me have to veer off and sneak a piece of candy or chocolate, and sometimes worse (think honey bun or chocoalte chip cookes **sigh**). If they would incorporate SOMETHING sweet, even fruit, I'd be ok. But geez! Unfortunately I don't think I'll be signing up now that my trial is done...Although the food is quite tasty, for the price their meals leave too much room to stray IMO :/ read more

I purchased a 5 day trial through Groupon. I am only in the middle of my trial but I am already extremely impressed. The meals are balanced, fresh and delicious. No sugar, dairy, preservatives, or gluten. I feel like they really focus on trying to make the food actually good for you rather than just low in calories like other plans. Unfortunately, there isn't an option for vegetarians, but it is marketed as a high-protein low-carb plan. I haven't been hungry and can feel sugar cravings starting to diminish. I think it normally costs about $43 a day which isn't even that expensive if you can afford it. I am not sure if it fits into my budget personally but if it did, I could see myself doing this long term. The customer service has been good. Monica, the founder, even called me to see how the trial was doing and took time to answer my questions. My only small complaint is that there are no reheating instructions on the food or the website. So I've just been using common sense and guessing and everything has come out fine. Also, if I remember correctly, the calorie counts aren't provided anywhere, which would be helpful to know. I haven't even tasted the food yet and I am already very impressed, excited even, to start this program. I am one of the luckiest women in the world: I got to stay home with my daughter for a whopping four years when she was a baby. During that time, I was so active. I was thinner and healthier than I have ever been in my life. Then I went back to work. While on maternity leave I had resolved to make a career change, never to sit behind a desk again. But circumstance and necessity forced me to break that resolution. Now, a few years and thousands of hours of inactivity later, I have a lower back issue, a mild but chronic crick in my neck and a solid 15-20 pounds of extra weight. With a no-minute-to spare schedule that starts each day a 5:45am and ends at 9:30pm, I have zero time during the week to exercise, and my workday is so crazy I often find myself skipping meals -- or getting to the point of such dire hunger that I make bad meal decisions, simply to cram food in my face. I'm seeing the effects of this dietary roller coaster in how I look and more importantly, how I feel, and something has to change. So this morning I decided to bite the bullet and sign up for a meal plan. I am so existentially tired of thinking about food: planning meals for the week that will satisfy both mine and my six-year-old's palate; picking from the limited set of vegetable choices that she will eat (asparagus was in; now it's out); relying a little too heavily on carbs, because oh my god who doesn't love mac n cheese; looking through recipes for something new to stave off the food boredom; writing the weekly grocery list; going to Stop n' Shop every weekend and linebacking through the self-checkout line (it's more of a science than an art)... I'm just so burned out on the whole thing. I find myself fantasizing about a pill that I could take that could simply satisfy both my nutritional needs as well as my appetite... and then I get so sad. Preparing food is an essential expression of my creativity. Baking muffins and cookies with my daughter is one of our most meaningful ways of spending time together (it's science! And fun!). But holy crap, am I ready for someone ELSE to cook for a change. I am running low on mental bandwidth, and I am just really freaking tired. So I did a little Googling, saw 5 Squares come up, and thought, "Hmmm." My first criteria was local -- I didn't want to be signing up for a meal plan that would be flown in from some industrial facility in Nebraska -- might as well call up American Airlines and ask if they do home delivery. I read a NY Times article that really touted the quality of the cuisine by Zone Manhattan, and I was pretty much set to go with that plan. When I went to the Zone Manhattan website, however, I was a little taken aback. I realize that this is no barometer of their abilities as a food provider, but finding more than one typo on more than one page of a website suggests a lack of credibility. That, coupled with the myriad negative reviews on that meal plan's customer service found here on Yelp, prompted me to think twice about signing up -- especially given its high price tag. It just seemed like a gamble. Enter Five Squares. Local? Based in New Rochelle. Food expertise? Check. Well-thought dietary agenda? Check. Well-written and user intuitive website? Check. Then the kicker -- I had a question about when the food would be delivered and called customer service. I can't be sure, but I suspect I got the owner of the company on the phone. She was awesome. She was smart and thoughtful, excited to have me as a customer. My delivery question was put to rest, and she encouraged me to be as specific as possible about my food likes and dislikes... I joked that I'm such an omnivore I felt a little guilty about not having any food restrictions and so clicked 'shellfish' out of obligation... she laughed and then told me I would regret missing out on their jumbo shrimp dish. I went back and unclicked the preference, now curious and excited to start trying the food. I can't wait till Monday for my food to arrive. It's the intersection of online convenience and personal care-taking that goes beyond mere dieting for me. Losing weight will always be a challenge, but now I feel like I've got a partner helping me through it. (I tried Weight Watchers last year and while I definitely got into all the data analysis, it became a second job, what with all the meal planning, points tracking, exercise monitoring, and logging. And I am really not interested in a support group -- I just need practical help.) I will report back once the meals arrive to comment on the quality and taste of the food. I'm optimistic and hopeful that this will be a total win-win. read more

14 months postpartum and I still couldn't lose the last 10-15 lbs. Running like a maniac all summer didn't help either. The scale didn't budge. Like Onima, I was nervous about joining a food delivery plan. Would the food be good? Would it work? YES- the food is good. YES - I am losing weight weight. The first week I lost 5 lbs... breaking my 1 year plateau. Now I am slowly losing each week. I have more energy, feel leaner, and love the food. It has good variety and takes good. Eating every 3 hours has kept sugar and caffeine cravings at bay. I could not be happier with the results. I have the occasional glass of wine, bag of popcorn, dessert but find it very easy to stick the plan.Now if only I could get the hubby to join (who gained that sympathy weight). My only recommendation would be to find a way to offer an incentive to recycle/resuse the packaging. I feel very guilty recycling 5 plastic containers each day. read more

I was recently diagnosed with several severe food allergies - I am allergic to milk/dairy, eggs/eggwhites, peanuts, wheat, soy and some other things as well. On top of that I was also found to be highly carbohydrate intolerant so I cannot have a lot of carbs and I can't have any sugar (other than stevia). With all those items being off limits, it's tough trying to find time to shop and prepare food that I can eat. It's a hassle, it's time consuming and it's frustrating. My nutritional doctor helped me find 5 Squares and they have helped me out tremendously. They were able to coordinate with my doctor and they prepare my meals for me within the guidelines of what I can and cannot have. They substitute things to ensure that I only eat the things I'm supposed to be eating. And yet they make sure that I get enough protein and enough of everything else I should be eating to give me a balanced and healthy nutritional program. The food is always prepared fresh. There's nothing canned or anything like that. (I have tried other delivery programs and they sent things like canned fruits, etc and that's just gross and not acceptable). But 5 Squares food is always fresh, healthy, tasty, and well-balanced. They do really great things with proteins. 5 Squares was like a godsend for me at a time when I had gained more than 40 pounds from a car accident the year before which had left me unable to continue my exercise routine and 40 pounds heavier. Once I started eating the meals which are healthy, of good quality, and delicious the weight just started melting off. Within 5 months I had lost 40 pounds. The first 2 weeks I lost 14 pounds. I ate five times a day so I was never hungry and always had energy. It was the easiest diet and way for me to loose weight. It taught me about portion control and how to manage food on my own. Getting back into my thinner clothes and being ready for warm weather and summer dresses was an absolute bonus. This is the new way to lose weight and I would definitely use them again in the future. I was a bit apprehensive about joining a weight loss food delivery service because (A) I am still nursing 20m post partum and need to keep up my milk supply. (B) I am pescetarian and hate tofu/cheese so that limits the meals that can be served to me. (C) I have the sweetest tooth known to man and cave to dessert easily. However, the scales tipped 150lb (officially overweight territory at 5'5) and with no willpower to go to the gym or stick to a diet plan where I had to prepare the food myself, I decided to go for it. My target weight is 137lb which I wanted to reach in 8 weeks. It is a nutritionally balanced protein based diet with low carbs, no dairy, wheat or refined sugar. You eat a meal every three hours (every other meal is more of a snack). It sounds really extreme, but it is not. Prior to starting, I communicated all my requirements to the 5 squares team and they came up with a customized plan to suit my lifestyle and goals. So far, 2.5 weeks in and I have lost 8lbs! I am so impressed. I feel much lighter and healthier and have more energy. I also sleep better at night. The food is fresh, wholesome and varied so I never feel hungry or bored with the options even though my pescetarian diet limits what can be sent. If I were a meat eater I think I would be been more satisfied with the meal plan. Most meals are good if not very good, some of the meals are actually delicious and there has only been one thing that I did not like so far. Every few days, a tasty sweet treat (a protein based chocolate bar) is included so I don't feel like I am completely missing out. Often I don't manage to eat all the food delivered as there is so much of it that I end up with left overs. I do still have two soy mocha lattes (minimal chocolate) outside the meal plan every day- one for breakfast and another at around 3pm. I stay home with the kids and really need my coffee as a pick me up, so I decided not to completely eliminate that. Only three delivery days notice needed to cancel which I think is fair. The diet has readjusted my palate so I do not crave sugar and junk anymore. I went to three birthday parties on the second weekend and did not feel deprived passing on offers of cake! I have also learned a lot about portion control doing this diet too and hope to keep it up once I am ready to take on responsibility myself. The only areas for improvement I would suggest is that more fruit be included as the diet leans heavily on salad/vegetable based snacks. We also had one blip where the wrong meals were delivered to me, but I was quickly credited back that day and also given guidelines on what I should eat to keep the diet going for that one day as they could not redeliver the correct food. They are a very responsive company and so full marks in this regard too. If you are in two minds about whether to do this diet or not, I highly recommend that you take the plunge! read more

5 squares wasn't for me. Though I think it would be for most people. I had been on a different meal delivery plan where the food was tasty and it made me lose weight.... However when I switched to 5 squares for some more variety, the weight loss stopped. The portions on 5 squares were 3 times the size of those on my previous plan... in fact it was difficult for me to finish some meals. I'm not sure if this is normal or if they just mixed my height and weight info with that of a man's or someone who is much taller than I. The food was very tasty, but it was a lot and there was zero sugar... not even fruit. On my last plan there was a little sugar now and then mostly in the form of VERY small portions of fruit. Though they were small they kept my sweet tooth in check. 5 squares has nothing sweet at all in the plan so I found myself craving sugar unlike I ever did before. I have the 5 squares cookbook and in there it has you take a test to see if you are addicted to sugar. It says if you answer yes to at least 3 of the questions then you are. I answered yes to three of them., so I guess I'm included. But on my previous plan the small amounts of fruit were enough and fruit is good for you. I'm not convinced needing a little bit of sweet every couple of days makes one an ADDICT, but that's just me. Besides I was losing weight on that plan and on this one... perhaps due to a mixture of large portions and sudden intense cravings for candy- it completely failed me. Another thing that kind of annoyed me but wasn't a deal breaker is how often the print out paper saying what meals I was getting had errors on it. By errors I mean, NOT the food I was getting. As much as 30% of the time the print out for the day would say I'd be getting a particular meal that day... say beef- only for me to open the container and see that it's tuna. No big deal, but I did find it annoying how often that happened. Since most americans are meat and potatoes type of people I think most people would absolutely love 5 squares. However I preferred the other plan I had tried because they incorporate plenty of Fish and a little bit of fruit- My two favorite foods. So it's just a preference thing I guess. Both companies supply yummy food. The only thing that made one tastier than the other is that my previous service is very involved with the local fish market so, they would get lots of super fresh fish almost daily. 5 squares- fish came up once or twice a week and it was less good, but the food was still tasty. As for weight loss I didn't lose a thing on 5 square and may have actually gained a pound or two.... again not sure if the dietician there just made a mistake in regards to who I was and my dietary needs or if this is a common thing on this program... So at this point I would recommend it to Men or taller people who need more calories. read more
