Okay so we found this place at 10 pm on a Saturday night after many plates of Tapas. My fiance being as annoying as ever decided to not share a beer flight (of 4), so we ended up getting 2 separate flights. Totally worth it. I'm not a huge beer lover and usually only drink darker beers (porter, stout, bock, etc), but everything on the flights was good (well minus the lil' tart, a bit too sour for my taste). My favorite was the HOPITITIS C (yes it was so infectious I got myself a full glass afterward). Imagine a perfect beer to go with a thick and fatty piece of slow cooked pork belly! This place, just like other reviewers mentioned, is adventurous with their beers. This is a nano-brewery, so ... no take-out bottles. I even offered to buy my own growler for them to fill but I wasn't successful (oh well... chance for another visit). The atmosphere is very laid back (good for any group of age), and there are enough seating for small to medium groups. Take your date (if they like beer) to a nice nearby restaurant for a romantic dinner and then swing by this place to get happy! I met up with some friends here who recommended this as a great local brewpub. The location here is kinda odd, it's in a strip mall on a corridor between a couple of active areas in the western suburbs. It is immediately next to a well established mutli-use activity trail making it a good pit stop for a biking tour. The location itself is very spartan, simple and clean. Seating is limited and you're limited to a select number of high-top tables. Board games and cards are available for use. Some very creative things going on here. We had a Mexican inspired beer with agave, a exceptional bitter IPA and a very strong Belgian ale. All were very good. The Mexican wheat in particular should be a must-try for any craft beer enthusiast in the area. read more

Right off the greenbelt trail! I love to stop here during a bike ride! They really need to put in some outdoor seating along the trail and peanuts/pretzels/ or some unique snack food would be nice. They do have a cheese plate from the Cheese Shop but it is kind of expensive. The beer. I have had a few different beers here and have really enjoyed them. I love berliner weisse and anytime I see it I order it. Nice and tart with a refreshing finish. I look forward to trying more seasonal beers from these guys. This is truly a hidden gem in the area. If you love craft beer this is the place to go. They have a wide variety of styles of beer that are made in house along with some guest beers as well. The brew master Barb is truly amazing and puts out a consistent and amazing product. I would recommend getting a beer flight so you can try several different kinds of beer while your there. Great new offering to the central Iowa area. Loving the emphasis on local beer with four rotating house offerings and four other local options. The 515 options won't disappoint - I had the Hopititis B (Double IPA) and my wife ordered the Belgian Dubbel B. Both were fantastic. Thinking back on those as I type makes me want to jump in the car and make the 40 minute drive south just to pick up more. They were THAT good. Other touches at the location are nice. We experienced great, friendly service. Like other reviewers, I appreciated fresh seasoned pretzels in our own bowl. It's a good feeling to know that nobody else has "stink-palmed" your pretzels. Decor is pretty clean and minimal, but a nice tasteful hop icon on the wall reminds you what you are there for. Do yourself a favor and catch Hopititis while you can. read more

So I want to start off with a couple of constructive criticisms then onto the beer. I would like to try other beers and go a couple more times before I add stars. I noticed that the decor was fairly modern but kind of bland. I do like the giant hops grain thing on the wall. The shirts look pretty cool also. Too much lighting in my opinion. Also we thought they could use less of the huge tables and more of the high top smaller tables. I did dig the bike gears on the wall though. Pretty cool. One of the owners was very nice but no one really gave any info. It was basically look at the board and tell them what you want. One of the other owners seemed like he didn't want to deal with people. There were only a few of us in there. Kinda strange. I dunno, I guess in a new place like that when someone comes in you should be marketing the hell out of your new swanky business. Like give the people some info instead of just letting them figure it out. I'm the kind of person who appreciates some info. I went to Confluence and they were happy to tell us all about their beer without us even asking. So it's beer. Only beer. No food except for some really yummy seasoned pretzels. I tried the lil tart and it was right up my alley! Light, refreshing with a hint of tart. I asked the brew lady if they put lime or apple in there and she said it was just the kind of grain or something like that they use. Well it's prob my fave beer in DSM now so well done! My friend ordered the stout and I tasted it. It was like a syrup and I would not get it and my friend seemed displeased. I see this place getting good business from a lot of bicyclists on the trail since it's right there. I'll be one of the cyclists stopping in for sure. read more

The burger I got was the best $7 I have ever spent. It was relatively small, but oozing deliciousness. Other than the burger this place is a typical hip brewery. Good beer selection and a nice combination of cozy couch atmosphere with board games and art on one side of the place (which is basically a converted strip mall building) and tables and a bar on the other. read more

Visited a couple times -Friday and Saturday early afternoon and both times Whitney warmly welcomed us with immediate service. They have several very worthy beers and we settled on the Castaway coconut Porter. 6.6% which was absolutely delicious in every aspect. So hard to find exceptional coconut porters theses days and this was a real treat...like drinking Porter from a coconut shell on Gilligan's Island! Tons of bikers frequent this place as it's right on the trail so it can get a bit loud when they fill the place but hey, it's a brew pub full of people excited about great beer so all is good! They have free seasoned pretzels to nosh on, along with cheese baskets and other pub fare. read more

Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of 515's beers. I think they try too hard to do funky things, and they are also very heavy on the belgian styles, which are not my jam. If you're super open-minded and not picky about your beers, definitely worth a stop, but if you only have a small range in which you enjoy your hops and malts, 515 just isn't the best spot for you. Mediocre Pale Ale is just that: not sure why they would preemptively set themselves up for unexciting opinions. There really is not one beer that I could recommend, as they all seem to lack something to me, at least. Food trucks sometimes stop by, but don't count on eating much while drinking here. read more

The owners were there and were so down to earth and personable. They were super informative and they even gave us a tour! They explained everything to a T answered all of our questions; it's so interesting to really hear about the process and put a picture so to speak to each step, as well. We were served flights of 4 of their most popular brews. My favorite beer I tried was the tart. Super light, citrusy, and refreshing. My most favorite however was not in the flight; the peanut butter stout. A must try especially if you love peanut butter of course! A laid-back inviting environment so if you're looking to check out some breweries, definitely come here! They don't have food as to focus on their brews, but food trucks frequent here so you won't go hungry if you're needing a bite to eat. read more

My first experience at 515 was not great but due to a response from the business and positive reviews from friends, I decided to give them another shot...and I'm glad I did! The bar was busy, but the two bartenders were more than capable of ensuring the crowd got their beers quickly. I wasn't able to try the beer last time for comparison, but they had some really good choices. My wife and I had a flight and my favorite was the Hopititus C. My wife hates IPAs and even she liked it. She really enjoyed the Lil' Tart. We'll be sure to return when in the area and I'm glad to see the business has found their groove! read more

Located on a bike trail it is easy to get to. It is a large open area with a very small serving area. We always sit at the bar and we were offered a really good snack pretzel mix. Many local brews to choose from. They are improving as time goes by. Friendly staff and you can tell they appreciate your patronage. read more

The Hopititus-A is easily my favorite double IPA, the staff is friendly and knowledgeable and the atmosphere is just the right amount of laid back. They also give you your own bowl of pretzels so you know that guy that didn't wash his hands coming out of the bathroom isn't going to wreck up your snack. read more

I went to this nano brewery for the first time twice last weekend (Friday 5/31 and Saturday, 6/1). First, the beer. Very creative opportunities! They had a coconut vanilla porter, and agave lime wheat, a sour, and an IPA. Every one of them was very drinkable and I could see myself ordering each offering regularly. The IPA, called DART Dodger, was arguably one of the best IPA's I've had. Hopefully, they will be able to keep their supply up with demand as the brewery was well attended and folks seemed to be enjoying themselves. The staff was friendly and excited to talk about their beer. Overall, it was a comfortable place to enjoy beer with friends, kinda like a coffee house for beer. I'd go back and I'd bring friends with me, too. Nice startup! read more

A wonderful brewery! Beer is their only focus and 515 and it shows. It's up there with other top breweries in Des Moines (Confluence, Firetrucker) and is probably the best of the bunch. 515 always has new seasonals coming out and they're always willing to try new things and push the limit. OJ IPA is their flagship and always worth a try. Don't let the IPA title scare you - it's a lot more citrus wheat than hop bitter bomb. Great beer for summer or breakfast! 515 does nice little release parties for new beers and offers a limited number of $1 pours so look out for new beers on their Facebook page. Location is great - right off the bike trail in Clive. Taproom can get a bit crowded and noisy during the busy times and more outdoor space would be great. However, the lovely beer will make you forget all about that. They normally have at least 10 of their own beers on tap plus a couple guest taps. I've had some great beers here over the past couple years (a basil cucumber saison and a peanut butter porter come to mind) so stop in and see what's on tap today! read more

Their beer is solid and all I tried were good. The place is noisy and it is one where you have to go to the counter and order, so no waitstaff. This isn't all that bad just don't expect to be pampered. It looks dull from the outside at the end of a strip mall but it is right on the bike trail and easy to get to. The parking lot is full most of the time but there is parking around the building so that wasn't a problem. It's focus is right where it should be, on the beer. read more

My husband and I stayed overnight in Des Moines during a road trip from Texas to the upper peninsula of Michigan. After spending a significant amount of time in the car we both wanted to unwind with a beer. We checked Yelp and found the 515 Brewing Company pretty close to our hotel. As soon as we walked in we knew that this was our kind of place. The atmosphere was welcoming and had a very positive vibe! The employees took time to explain all of the different styles of beer to us. We ordered a couple flights so that we could try a little bit of everything. We were so impressed with 515 that my husband bought a baseball cap. Unfortunately, while we were on vacation the hat got lost, so we actually changed our route home so that we could go back to 515 and get another one! The same bartender was there when we returned and he remembered us! He gave us a discount on the new hat and even offered to give us a free beer (but we were driving on to Kansas City, so we had to pass). I cannot say enough positive things about 515 Brewing Company. I wish we lived closer to Iowa! read more
